Today's Early Overnight Ratings

This table shows the early overnight ratings. These ratings are normally adjusted later in the day when all the ratings have been consolidated to take into account any local preemptions and/or overruns. You can find all the final adjusted numbers in our Ratings Database. (See the About section below for details about ratings)

Early Ratings Analysis

The analysis below is based on the early household numbers and are NOT the same as the numbers that will be posted in the above table later. (See the About section below)

For more information on the Nielsen Ratings see this Wikipedia Entry.

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence. Keep in mind, as always, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

-Winners:
“The 57th Annual Grammy Awards” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Mulaney” (Fox), “”The Simpsons” (Fox), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (Fox), “Family Guy” (Fox), “Bob’s Burgers” (Fox). Movie: “The Hunger Games” (ABC)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
It was all about “The Grammy Awards” on the broadcast networks, with the 57th annual festivities on CBS at a 16.7 rating/26 share in household overnights from 8-11:45 p.m. ET. Comparably, this was just six percent below the 17.7/28 for the year-ago telecast (on Sunday 1/26/14 from 8 p.m.-12 a.m. ET), and that translated into 28.51 million viewers and a 9.9 rating/25 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data. The peak half hour was an 18.6/27 at 8:30 p.m. For a complete listing of the winners, click on the following: http://tinyurl.com/na2juoa

Earlier in the evening on CBS was granddaddy “60 Minutes” at a dominant 7.7/12 from 8-9 p.m.

Keep in mind that “The Walking Dead” returned on AMC at 9 p.m. into the series premiere/preview of “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul” at 10 p.m. last night.

Elsewhere, the results were minimal. Distant No. 2 ABC populated the evening with veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (#2: 3.9/ 6 from 7-8 p.m.) into 2012 theatrical “The Hunger Games” (2.2/ 3 from 8-11 p.m.). NBC traveled the repeat route with “Dateline” (#3: 3.7/ 6 from 7-8 p.m.) and three hours of “American Ninja Warrior” (1.5/ 2 from 8-11 p.m.). And the next-to-last episode of inane Fox sitcom “Mulaney” (#4: 0.8/ 1 at 7 p.m.) led into an encore telecast of “The Simpsons” (#4: 1.1/ 2 at 7:30 p.m.) and original telecasts of “The Simpsons” (#3: 1.9/ 3), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#3: 1.7/ 3), “Family Guy” (#3: 2.0/ 3) and “”Bob’s Burgers” (#3: 1.5/ 2) from 8-10 p.m. Why Fox wasted original programming opposite “The Grammy Awards” is a mystery.

About the Daily Ratings

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.

The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).

Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.

Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).

Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). 1. Nothing really exiting here.
Waiting for the adjusted ones with The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul.

  2. FOX is certainly trying to compete with ABC in the "Who can program Sundays in the dumbest possible way" category. I actually think they are winning. Between random hiatuses, not taking full advantage of football lead-ins, airing stuff against major events and airing originals surrounded by repeats they are being morons!

    ReplyDelete
  3. I'm just relieved B99 and Bob's Burgers are already renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  4. FOX usually has erratic scheduling on Sunday, but I don't ever recall it being this scattered. Considering the very long production cycle for these comedies, it should be pretty easy to plan it out.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I agree, it is pretty ridiculous what they are doing this year.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Boring night.

  7. Fabiana de Marca9 February 2015 at 14:40

    i expected that :/

    ReplyDelete
  8. I only wanna know how "Better Call Saul" and "The Walking Dead" did. Expect at least 2.5 for BCS and hope a new series high for TWD :)

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yup.

All eyes are on the Walking Dead and Better Call Saul.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Fox is winning that competition

    ReplyDelete
  11. Except for Walking Dead and Better Call Saul

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yep, their entire scheduling sucks, not for just one night.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Except for EMPIRE! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  14. True, but I was talking more about their scripted shows.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Gotham and Sleepy Hollow are also well scheduled, apart from the random break in week 2 of January but that made sense to avoid the major sports competition. And I don't see anything wrong with the schedule of Mindy and New Girl.

Backstorm and The Following are poorly scheduled, yes, and Bones is debatable, but I think Sundays are still worse.

  16. All eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a circus. When I crack that whip, everybody gonna trip just like a circus.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I had FOX on before the Grammys aired. And I notice Mulaney was on. So, I tried to give it another try to see if it improved since the beginning of the season. Mulaney is still horrible. It is the worse sitcom I've seen in years. It is way worse than Dads, which I felt FOX should have retooled and kept. At least on Dads there was great chemistry amongst the leads. And although the writing was weak, they were able to make me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  18. There was a reason NBC passed on Mulaney. Same with Backstrom, which CBS passed on.

    ReplyDelete
  19. FOX scheduling is horrible but last night I didn't expect them to compete very well with Grammys and Walking Dead. At least they have Empire. Hope for the best for Gotham and Sleepy Hollow tonight

    ReplyDelete
  20. Also ABC on Super Fun Night which CBS had passed. Is there a successful story of a show passed by a network that lived on to become a hit in other network? Or at least not a mega flop?

    ReplyDelete
  21. B99 fully retaining the simpsons is very impressive. But the simpsons did terribly itself!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Fox:

    mulaney: 0.5
    R Simpsons: 0.7
    Simpsons: 1.2
    B99: 1.2
    FG: 1.4
    BB: 1.0

    ReplyDelete
  23. Winners: The Grammy Awards, The Hunger Games, America's Funniest Home Videos

Honorable Mention for not being terrible: Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy

    Losers: The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers

    ReplyDelete
  24. Forgot about SFN.
Not that I can remember in recent history. Networks really should learn from this.

    ReplyDelete
  25. ABC really should resort to his type of lineup the entire January-February period. This and some bachelor specials. Anything else makes zero sense. This actually performed pretty well given the competition and cost.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I was going to say the exact same thing ! They did better than their scripted

    ReplyDelete
  27. Boring day for ratings

    ReplyDelete
  28. So I guess The Hungers Games getting low numbers and having been beaten by The Grammys is reason enough to believe that a renewal for it is not deserving?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Revenge and OUAT9 February 2015 at 16:14

I cannot wait until March when revenge and OUAT are back on! That is all I can say! OUAT will be so fresh qnd New and i hope revenge returns with a bang. I rewatched the last three episodes of season 3 and realized: that is what we need!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Not sure I understand? You don't renew movies.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Some of the most well-known network transfers:
    1. JAG from NBC to CBS and eventually spawned the NCIS franchise.
    2. Buffy from The WB to UPN
    3. Sabrina the Teenage Witch from ABC to The WB
    4. Grounded for Life from Fox to the WB.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Considering it stood mighty against it, I'd give it 3 seasons, with the 3rd one being a split season

    ReplyDelete
  33. Shocked that ABC didn't try to schedule their shows against the Grammys!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Sundays are so boring for me without OUAT!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Revenge and OUAT9 February 2015 at 16:17

For me as well without revenge and OUAT

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm hoping The Walking Dead beats the Grammy's

    ReplyDelete
  37. The proportionately good treatment ABC gave that show disgusted me. How they thought it would do well is beyond me.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Fox is doing a terrible job with their Suday line up. Football leading into repeats? Seriously? And now this? It is beyond stupid

    ReplyDelete
  39. Glad TWD is back, but that episode dragged badly.

    ReplyDelete
  40. And those split season will air exactly a year apart. But it depends if ratings expectations are met or else, a renewal will never be justified. AT. ALL.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm so excited for it! I can't wait to see all the girl power, Zelena back, dark Snow, dark Charming & dark Emma,! I have really high expectations :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Can't wait for OUAT it's been like forever since it has been gone! But good thing February is a short month

    ReplyDelete
  43. Excited for ouat, season 4b looks exciting! As for revenge, I'm hoping that they will put on a better promo and come back with an exciting episide.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It would be. That was some episode last night. I was shocked and saddened. Ugh! It is only going to get worse.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Revenge and OUAT9 February 2015 at 16:28

Agreed abour OUAT. The promo Made me excited right away! And revenge definitely needs a good episode!!!! after last year i am sure the last few episodes of the season will be pretty good

    ReplyDelete
  46. Revenge and OUAT9 February 2015 at 16:29

IKR it will be so good!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Rare night where everyone is waiting for the cable numbers rather than the broadcast shows.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Considering that how low revenges ratings were in January and left of with a weak episodes. It really needs to not only have a good episode but a strong episode. I think it still has a chance to win back some viewers with a new lead in. I'm pretty sure secrets and lies will be higher then resurrections second season. Even if it got like a 1.7 that will still be a good enough lead in for revenge

    ReplyDelete
  49. Revenge and OUAT9 February 2015 at 16:35

I have my doubts about secreSecrets&Lies

    ReplyDelete
  50. I feel that way every Sunday the Walking Dead is on! Lol

    ReplyDelete
  51. It still has a better timeslot and ouat as a lead in. so i think that it should be around a 1.6-1.7

    ReplyDelete
  52. Is this a series low for The Simpsons?

    ReplyDelete
  53. I only feel like that during Summer, my favourite cable shows are on then.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Is PBS considered cable for rating news? I'd like to know how Downton Abbey did last night.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks for the list, quite useful! And yes I was ore referring to the second group but thanks anyway, some very good examples there!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Losers: The Hunger Games

I know I'm alone on that but reading that filled my heart with joy
