Ratings Breakdown:
ABC topped this first Thursday in February, besting No. 2 CBS by four-tenths of a household rating point (or six percent). But the more interesting observation was NBC, which had mixed results care of its revamped Thursday.
The immediate positive for NBC was just renewed “The Blacklist,” which moved into the Thursday 9 p.m. hour with a rock-solid (and second-place) 6.8 rating/11 share in households. Comparably, this was the best metered market rating for “The Blacklist” since week two of this season (also a 6.8/11 on 9/29/14), and it trailed competing “Scandal” on ABC (#1: 7.5/12) by only nine percent.
The debut of NBC lead-out drama “Allegiance,” however, took a tumble with a third-place 3.4/ 6 at 10 p.m. While this was (excluding the 3.8/ 7 for the series-finale of “Parenthood” one week earlier) NBC’s best rating in the Thursday 10 p.m. hour since “Peter Pan Live!” on Dec. 4, 2014, overnight retention for “Allegiance” out of “The Blacklist” was only 50 percent. And it trailed competing “How To Get Away With Murder” on ABC (season low 6.2/11) and older-skewing “Elementary” on CBS (4.9/ 8) by 45 percent and 31 percent, respectively. Since most new series drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two (the recent exception, no doubt, is “Empire” on Fox), consider this a very disappointing start for “Allegiance.” But two thumbs up to “The Blacklist.”
Earlier in the evening on NBC was an encore airing of the post-“Super Bowl” telecast of “The Blacklist” at a fourth-place 3.7/ 6 from 8-9 p.m.
Top-rated for the evening, once again, was “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS at a 10.2/16 in the 8 p.m. half-hour. And it led into sophomore “Mom” at a 6.8/11 (#2) at 8:30 p.m., which held a respectable 67 percent of the lead-in. Next on the Eye net was “Two and a Half Men,” which concludes in two weeks, at a third-place 5.6/ 9 at 9 p.m., followed by a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” (in place of failed former time period occupant “The McCarthys”) at a 4.9/ 8 at 9:30 p.m. (#3). One week earlier, the final episode of “The McCarthys” scored a 4.2/ 7.
As a reminder, “Two and a Half Men” will conclude with a one-hour episode on Thursday, Feb. 19 from 9-10 p.m. ET. Leading into the finale at 8:30 p.m. will be the series debut of “The Odd Couple” reboot, featuring Matthew Perry as sloppy Oscar Madison and Thomas Lennon as neat freak Felix. One week later on Feb. 26, current Thursday 8:30 p.m. time period occupant “Mom” moves to 9:30 p.m. ET out of encore telecasts of “The Big Bang Theory” at 9 p.m.
In week three news, Fox dramedy “Backstrom” took a hit opposite the increased competition with a distant fourth-place 2.6/ 4 in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 24 percent below the 3.4/ 5 one week earlier, with retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “American Idol” (7.0/11) of just 37 percent. Three-week overnight track for “Backstrom”: 5.2/ 8 – 3.4/ 6 – 2.6/ 4.
Overall, “American Idol” scored a second-place 6.7/11 from 8-9 p.m., which was two-tenths of a rating point (or three percent) above the 6.5/10 in the time period one week earlier. Third in the 8 p.m. hour was veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC at a 6.2/10, which bested the first hour of year-ago time period occupant “The Taste” (2.5/ 4) by a hefty 148 percent.
The CW capped off the evening with tired “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.4/ 2), which was equal to one week earlier, and sophomore “Reign,” which sunk to a series-low 0.8/ 1 from 9-10 p.m. Maybe The CW should rethink that third season renewal for “Reign.”
