Ratings Breakdown:
Fox remains the network to beat in the household overnights (and the key demos) on Wednesday care of “American Idol” (#1: 7.9 rating/12 share at 8 p.m.) and recent drama entry “Empire” (#1 for the night: 8.0/12 at 9 p.m.), which posted its fourth consecutive week of growth. As I was reminded by a number of readers last week, the last new series to grow in the ratings week after week was the inaugural season of “Survivor” on CBS, which debuted on May 31, 2000 (and did not face all original competition at the time). The 7.9 overnight household rating for “Empire” last week translated into 11.35 million viewers and a 4.3 rating/13 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data. Five-week overnight track for “Empire”: 6.8/10 – 7.3/11 – 7.6/12 – 7.9/12 – 8.0/12.
“American Idol,” meanwhile, dipped by 11 percent in the household overnights compared to the 8.9/14 for the two-hour telecast on the year-ago evening.
In series-premiere news, ABC sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” was clearly sampled with a 5.5/ 8 in the overnights at 8:30 p.m. (#3), which was equal (in rating) to the 5.5/ 9 (#3) for lead-in “The Middle” at 8 p.m. And it was 20 percent above the most recent original telecast of regularly scheduled time period occupant “The Goldbergs” (4.6/ 7 on Jan. 14), which translated into 7.22 million viewers and a 2.3 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data.
A second episode of “Fresh Off the Boat” performed similarly at a 5.0/ 8 at 9:30 p.m. (#3), but that 5.0 overnight rating was 26 percent below lead-in “Modern Family” (#1: 6.8/10 at 9 p.m.). Comparably, however, this was 19 percent above the 4.2/ 7 in the overnights for the most recent original telecast of regularly scheduled “black-ish” (on Jan. 14). And the positive news for ABC was initial sampling for both episodes of “Fresh Off the Boat.” But opening Tuesday at 8 p.m. effective next week minus any lead-in support will be no easy feat.
Three-year old drama “Nashville” closed the night for ABC with a typical third-place 3.6/ 6 in the overnights from 10-11 p.m., which was equal to the year-ago evening. Considering the need for more episodes in off-network, chances of a fourth season for moderately rated “Nashville” seems likely.
Elsewhere, freshman drama “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC (#4: 4.0/ 6 from 8-9 p.m.) continues to trail equally older-skewing “The Mentalist” on CBS (#2: 5.8/ 9), which both do not resonate among adults 18-49. And “Laura” led into veteran “Law & Order: SVU” at a fourth-place 4.3/ 7 from 9-10 p.m. (equal to the year-ago evening), followed by sophomore “Chicago PD” at a first-place 5.1/ 8 at 10 p.m. Comparably, “Chicago PD” bested competing “Stalker” on CBS (#2: 4.8/ 8) by six percent in the overnights, and it built from the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Law & Order: SVU” (4.4/ 7) by 16 percent.
“Stalker,” meanwhile, dipped from veteran lead-in “Criminal Minds” at 9 p.m. (6.4/10) by 25 percent, which may not bode well for a second season renewal.
Over at The CW, sophomore drama “The 100” did not earn its third season renewal with a 1.1/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. (#5), and retention out of lead-in “Arrow” (#5: 2.1/ 3) of just 52 percent. To the masses accusing me of purposely negating “The 100,” I have nothing against the show. Labeling it a “loser” is strictly from a ratings perspective. And, yes…this does warrant a “loser” label.

Wow Empire,just amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Fresh off The Boat got a decent enough sampling.
ReplyDeleteHappy for it,hoping it will be decent on Tuesday.
ReplyDelete"recent drama entry “Empire” (#1 for the night: 8.0/12 at 9 p.m.), which posted its fourth consecutive week of growth."
ReplyDelete"Five-week overnight track for “Empire”: 6.8/10 – 7.3/11 – 7.6/12 – 7.9/12 – 8.0/12"
So do we just average it out and consider it 4.5 weeks of growth? This is where proofreading can help.
And wow at Chicago PD. #1 in its timeslot. Even more reason to keep the crossovers coming, it's working. Chicago Med is a huge lock on schedule. It's happening.
Hahahha Marc seems to be visiting us more often than we think!
ReplyDeleteI agree unfortunately its losing a lot of its lead-in.It should be moved to another night.
ReplyDeleteHere comes the real test: does FOTB skew more like The Goldbergs or The Middle?
ReplyDeleteIn the HH's ratings (and viewers), Empire has been growing for the fifth consecutive week. Don't know why we should average it for 4.5 weeks...
ReplyDeletePredictions for ABC?
ReplyDeleteMaybe but what night? Friday? It's where shows go to die.
ReplyDeleteLook like same results for Arrow and The 100 from last week
ReplyDeleteI have no idea since I have no idea how Fresh off the Boat will skew.
ReplyDeleteI doubt it. They only have 4 episodes left. I think Reign and The 100 are going to air in the Spring/Summer next season. I love The 100 but I'm trying to be realistic.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Boat got higher HH ratings at 8:30, I guess Empire is the real death star after all.
ReplyDeleteNo idea about the skew, time to drop to 1-5 at the question.
I think that for next season, not this.
ReplyDeleteSurprised Marc going on record about not having anything against The 100. At least he offered some explenation, though I would remark its stability, even if it is not taking advantage of its lead in.
ReplyDeleteEmpire keeps surprising. Just, wow... probably will be steady on the demos, but still, what a beast!
I hope Fresh off the Boat can do well on Tuesdays, so here's for a big sampling!
Does anyone know what was HH rating for last TMOL episode?
ReplyDelete"Over at The CW, sophomore drama “The 100” did not earn its third season renewal with a 1.1/ 2 in the overnights at 9 p.m. (#5), and retention out of lead-in “Arrow” (#5: 2.1/ 3) of just 52 percent. To the masses accusing me of purposely negating “The 100,” I have nothing against the show. Labeling it a “loser” is strictly from a ratings perspective. And, yes…this does warrant a “loser” label." WOW
ReplyDeleteCorrect. that's exactly my point. It's five, but TVMediaInsights wrote only four. And then five later in the article. Someone needs to proofread better.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Fresh off the Boat! Now continue this on Tuesdays!
ReplyDeletePeople shouldn't take Marc's comment seriously. This is the guy who has been hating Supernatural for years and tried his best to put it always on the loser list even when it didn't make any sense. I just laugh at this stupid comments lol.
ReplyDeleteCan't grow from week zero to week one, so there have been four weeks of growth (eps 1–2, 2–3, 3–4, 4–5).
ReplyDeleteBut that doesn't negate your point that they need a proofreader (see: CSI/NCIS franchise confusion).
Wow, Marc replying to one of his many criticisms is the first thing I took out of the ratings analysis!
ReplyDeleteMaybe Thursdays; move Reign out of there - to Fridays or summer airings- and if The 100 keps is 0.5s there it will be a improvement over Reign's performance
ReplyDeleteFresh off the Boat was good. Hope for 2.5-2.8 for premiere!
ReplyDeleteReign needs to move,I think it could be a great pairing with new Julie Plecs show.
ReplyDeleteGood point, but do we consider Empire growing out of American Idol week 1 growth? In my calculation, I did to get five. Maybe I'm interpreting what he meant to say wrong. It happens in print.
ReplyDeleteI really hope so! I want to do it well on Tuesdays! And hopefully it will boost Agent Carter too.
ReplyDeleteThat's being overly optimistic, but I can dream
Well he laways puts show with a 1.1 HH ratings in the loser category, especially when they lose so much of the lead in. And this season he already put VD in the loser category also.
ReplyDeleteI just posted that they would be a great pairing like you read my mind.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this week he did so, so at least he is being less biased now that the season has progressed. I haven't seen the "wothy of a larger audience" label this winter
ReplyDeleteThe 100 has it's own core audience and stability but being a passive aggressive retentionista, Marc is blinded by his own inflated self worth. I'll take The 100 in the loser category over having to agree with him on anything, any day.
ReplyDeleteEmpire is building an empire!
ReplyDeleteAs I've said before, he can label The 100 a loser all he wants because the day I agree with anything he says, I will stop watching TV.
ReplyDeleteAh! Gotcha. I interpreted it as growing from its own HH rating week to week. I can see what you mean though.
ReplyDeleteGlad people checked out Fresh off the Boat. I thought it was funny, especially Eddie and his Mom, they cracked me up.
ReplyDeleteYou only have to stop watching broadcast TV. ;) He hasn't poisoned cable shows yet.
ReplyDeleteReally don't know how CW is planing to do it next season with already 8 old reentries. Could see them try move The100 to Fridays with Cordon maybe and try to build up a solid Friday night.
ReplyDeleteThere are couple of shows that work better as a summer show. If they are serious about a summer lineup, The 100, Reign, BatB, iZombie and The Messengers, could establish a very nice lineup.
ReplyDeleteEmpire is building empire!
ReplyDeleteCan it beat TBBT this week? Hope so....
I agree; The 100 will perform the same with or without Arrow, and that makes it a valuable asset to The CW. It may be underperforming in terms of retention, but it is doing a remarkable job at keeping its demo
ReplyDeleteAt this point, it wouldn't surprise me. It would take TBBT getting its mojo back to make a real difference in their ratings. The race will be close
ReplyDeleteI doubt he would comprehend the greatness of the cable shows we watch :) Ok, I'm done picking on Marc. He is not worthy of continued insults if my 100 is not worthy of its renewal.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy about Chicago PD's progress this season. Yeah, it had the crossover this week but it has been maintaining its own audience and has built off of SVU's demos for a number of weeks.
ReplyDeleteI agree except that The Messengers seems DOA. I think the concept and the cast are very interesting so I don't understand why the CW has so little faith in it.
ReplyDeleteI am still stunned with that move.Still hoping(delusional fan I am)
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how The 100 said the show it's lead in dependent when it gets the same ratings with Arrow repeats. The 100 has its own independent audience.
ReplyDeleteBut ending The100 in march this year and not air it for 15 months would be a too big of a gap. So as written under they could air a short run of eps in fall-winter and than transition to summer.
ReplyDeleteI AGREE! And looking at the competition that the show is facing these days it still holds very well. MF and Empire and it barely dipped.
ReplyDeleteBut what will be the schedule for Tuesday? FOTB is just half hour, will they air two episodes in a row? I don't think that's a good idea. Then what will they air on the other half hour?
ReplyDeleteThought it was going to premiere this week. Thanks for the notice!
ReplyDeleteAgree, glad NBC gave chance to Chicago Fire when it started bad in season 1
ReplyDeleteI agree, The 100 can really stand on its own in the summer. I actually think that Arrow airing before The 100 doesn't do it any favors. Both shows are heavy dramas, it can be overwhelming watching them in the same night.
ReplyDeleteI think it will, probably for the season finale
ReplyDeleteThey will air Repeat After Me at 8h30.
ReplyDeleteIs it that good, for me pilot was just ok?
ReplyDeleteIt has gotten so much better since the pilot. You should really watch the episodes after the pilot.
ReplyDeletePilot was by far the worst episode of the show
ReplyDeletei remember that i was so disappointed, because it was just bunch of stupid kids running around and doing stupid things
Now it really is much better
He replied to a bunch of comments here last week, too.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they could do a midseason and then a summer transition, air season 3 in the winter/spring, and then spring/summer for the following season.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if that's the issue, I think The 100 is heavy serialized by now and someone jumping in a random episode from Arrow may be like "huh?". So that's why it may not benefitting, but overwhelming is not a factor, if it was TGIT wouldn't work
ReplyDeleteYes, last week it got a 5.3 if I remember right.
ReplyDeleteI think the big exception is Scandal, which was becoming heavily serialized in season 2, but it grew due to the buzz.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that's what the show needs, a Scandal like buzz to pick up the extra tenths it needs to be a hit
Amazing that Empire is still growing!! I want a 5.0 before the season ends!! Very good for Fresh Off The Boat for maybe having a decent premiere, Chicago PD growing from its lead in at 10 PM and even Nashville for staying steady after a two month hiatus.
ReplyDeleteLast nights episode proveed The 100 to be a teen show - it wouldn't survive on CBS, Kane and Abby looked so weak. They survived for so long on the Arc and now they run out of ideas.
ReplyDeleteAnybody ready for the Scandal/Blacklist and Allegiance/Murder battles tonight? It would've been even juicier if ABC premiered their shows tonight instead of last week cause we all know they'll go down.
ReplyDeleteMany here can't believe The 100 isn't doing better. It is by far one of the best TV shows on the air right now, so it is really disappointing to see it doing the same rating and not growing. That being said, the audience has proved to be very loyal, it hasn't drop below 0.5 and highly doubt it will. Even without Arrow it scores that rating, so a loyal audience is something the show has going for it
ReplyDeleteSo he addressed out comments about The 100, lol
ReplyDeleteI honestly can't wait to see those ratings! I'm really curious to see how they will fare
ReplyDeletePredictions ?
ReplyDeleteScandal 3.3
TBL 3.0
Didn't notice that. Would love to exchange thoughts with him ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'd have been more excited if the Blacklist had done better after the Super Bowl. Considering it underperformed after the Super Bowl, I'll imagine it will do 2.8-3.0 tonight. x
ReplyDelete
