The juggernaut on Fox called “Empire” scored its seventh consecutive week of overnight household growth, topping the night at a 9.2 rating/14 share from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 28 percent above the second half of “American Idol” on the year-ago evening (7.2/11 on 2/26/14), and it built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “Idol” (7.4/11) by 24 percent. Had Fox had a crystal ball, it would have ordered more than 12 episodes of “Empire” initially. Eight-week overnight track for “Empire”: 6.8/10 – 7.3/11 – 7.6/12 – 7.9/12 – 8.0/12 – 8.2/13 – 8.8/13 – 9.2/14. Worth repeating: unprecedented!
Aforementioned lead-in “American Idol,” meanwhile, scored a dominant 7.1/11 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was on par from one year earlier.
In season-premiere news was the 90-minute “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” openers on CBS. “Survivor,” themed “World’s Apart,” scored a second-place 5.6/ 9 from 8-9:30 p.m., which fluctuated by only one-tenth of a rating point in the three half hours and was consistent from the two-hour (two episodes) season opener on the year-ago evening (5.7/ 9 on 2/26/14, themed “Brawn vs. Brains”). Expect a performance for the this welcome return of “Survivor” at an estimated 9.5 million viewers and a low-2 rating in adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data.
“The Amazing Race,” however, lost considerable steam with a 3.8/ 6 in the overnights from 9:30-11 p.m. (which only fluctuated by two-tenths of a rating point in the three half-hours). Comparably, this was down by 28 percent from the year-ago season-premiere (5.3/ 8 on Sunday 2/23/14). Retention out of “Survivor” was 68 percent (or, in other words, down by 32 percent). And the 10-11 p.m. portion of “The Amazing Race” trailed competing “Chicago PD” on NBC (4.8/ 8) by 23 percent. In other words, consider this very disappointing.
“The Amazing Race” returns to its regularly scheduled Friday 8 p.m. hour tomorrow (into “Hawaii Five-O” and “Blue Bloods” from 9-11 p.m.).
On NBC, freshman “The Mysteries of Laura,” featuring a guest appearance by Debra Messing’s former “Will & Grace” co-star Eric McCormack, rose to its best household overnights (#3: 5.2/ 8 from 8-9 p.m.) since Dec. 10, 2014. Keep in mind that similar appeal “The Mentalist” on CBS concluded its series-run last week. And it led into the top-rated “Law & Order: SVU” (#4: 5.4/ 8 at 9 p.m.) since the Nov. 12, 2014 triple crossover (6.7/10) with “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago PD.”
Elsewhere, ABC had nothing unusual to report with its line-up of “The Middle” (#3t, 5.2/ 8), “The Goldbergs” (#4: 4.8/ 7), “Modern Family” (#2: 6.1/ 9), “black-ish” (#3: 4.5/ 7) and aforementioned “Nashville” (#3: 3.6/ 6). And sophomore “The 100” on The CW (#5: 1.1/ 2 at 9 p.m.) dipped by a typical 45 percent out of “Arrow” (#5: 2.0/ 3 at 8 p.m.). Needless to say, the network could do better in the Wednesday 9 p.m. hour.
While nothing has been announced for next season yet, ABC pairing ‘black-ish” with “Fresh off the Boat” on Tuesday and freeing up the Wednesday 9:30 p.m. half-hour (out of “Modern Family”) for a new sitcom could be a possibility. Stay tuned.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteI really hope CBS doesn't cancel TAR. Another cycle is guaranteed since they already did the casting for it, but I am worried about its future after that. It is the only reality show I watch.
I saw the pilot and tbh, I didn't enjoy it at all.

ReplyDeleteThe Mysteries Of Laura did really well. Nice rebound for the reunion. SVU and Chicago PD also benefited. After scripted disappointments on Monday and Tuesday this week, finally NBC got something going on Wednesday.
No, Empire is not So good.... It's VERY GOOD!!! Last Nights Episode was on another Level. Simply AMAZING!

It was a little down on Sundays last year, but still doing respectably. I think it's the kind of show people watch as a family on Sunday, as opposed to weekdays.

ReplyDeleteEvery week I fee that it's already incredible what Empire is doing and that it has to stop. Yet, every week I am proven wrong when yet another frontier is broken in crazy fashion. I don't even know what to say about the show anymore!
ReplyDeleteElsewhere, I was expecting ABC to spike due to the "eventful" episodes of The Goldbergs and Modern Family but the overnights suggest it was NBC that surprisingly spiked instead. We shall see what the demo says. Also, CBS really should have kicked TAR to the summers already, it is the worst performer on their entire schedule.
They need to place Elementary on Sundays since it is too toxic to remain on a weekday and it would derail Blue Bloods on Fridays if placed there. Also, it makes more sense to give the good Sundays 8pm slot to Madam Secretary, a freshman show they want to nurture than to a 25 season reality show in its last legs.

ReplyDeleteIt's not my typical style of show but I've been slowly pulled in and now I'm totally hooked. The cast is great, the stories are fun, there's tons of twists.. it's pure entertainment at it's absolute best. Certainly it's no "Mad Men" or "Breaking Bad", but it doesn't try to be and it embraces it's over-the-top fun side and blends that well with genuine character moments. It's easy to see why it's becoming a culture phenomenon. I was laughing my ass off during the show last night.
ReplyDeleteNBC promoted the Will and Grace reunion for weeks. I had a feeling if people saw it, there would be a spike. It also leads into what I've written previously that NBC needs to get their 8 PM lead ins figured out. A lot of their 9 PM shows are being hampered by bad lead ins, funneling into 10 PM.

ReplyDeleteI saw the first 2 episodes last week (it premiered in my country) and tbh didn´t like it that much, maybe because I was never a fan of the musical genre...however I think it has the potential to be addictive:)
ReplyDeleteWell the Voice airs twice a day at 8pm and those days still manage to be problematic so I wouldn't focus entirely on that. But I agree that they've done some pretty stupid things with the late portion of the week. Removing Dateline from the lead-off role at 8pm when it was doing solid business there to place the struggling Constantine in there was a horrible idea. And obviously thinking that the slap had any chance to produce good numbers in that Thursday slot was also ridiculous. Grimm and The Blacklist would likely be doing better if their lead-ins were better, so you have a point in there.

ReplyDeleteI think we have to see if the rise holds in the demo as it could just be the older viewers from CBS tuning in due to the absence of the CBS procedurals which weren't on even in repeats.

Empire is breaking broadcast network and rating gravity all the same
ReplyDeleteIt's not a show I would normally watch, as I dislike shows that have a music element to them, but I've found Empire to be very entertaining. Taraji P.Henson is one of the main reasons I enjoy it so much, she's phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteEmpire is getting great ratings. However, Fox has a problem because the viewership is almost 80% African American. That is not a demographic that sells well with advertisers. They would prefer to have a more balanced distribution of viewers.

ReplyDeleteAnd since Chicago PD pulled a 1.7 with a HH of 4.6/8, it's probably sitting at a 1.8 or 1.9. Depending on how young SVU skewed this episode.

ReplyDeleteYeah I realized, I was just saying. I've sort of given up on the 100 ratings wise. It is sad but people refuse to acknowledge how amazing this show is and if it hasn't happened this year, I don't think it's ever going to happen. Which is very very sad.

ReplyDeleteYou're more optimistic than I am then ;) I really don't think it will happen because it missed its chance this year. Next year, I expect the CW (and rightfully so, I am afraid) to deprioritize the show and send it to a lower viewed portion of the calendar or of the week with no lead-in and less promotion. So I think it missed the boat already. But I would love to be wrong, I just don't think it will happen. I focus on Arrow's ratings now on Thursday, at least I get joy from there!
ReplyDeleteWell, last year Beauty and the Beast was the most consistent show and that has been renewed for a fourth season so I guess that's positive.
ReplyDeleteI think there is a chance The 100 moves to Thursdays after TVD; the show constantly battles against Empire and Modern Family, so I think confronting Scandal and The Blacklist would be no problem for it. And the show has been able to muster 0.5s on its own, without Arrow airing. So the move may be able to fix to an extent their Thursdays lineup while freeing Arrow to launch something else, and moving Reign to Fridays or summer.

ReplyDelete"Entertaining in a VH1/BET way"... really? Because the cast is black? The acting and writing is a lot better than most dramas on network TV right now. It's fun and flashy, yea, but the cast is phenomenal and the writers and director's are fantastic. It was stated from the get-go that Daniels wanted to make a Black version of "Dynasty" and that's what he did. It's gotten better each week and I think it's unfair to associate it with those networks just because the color of the actors. Danny Strong and Lee Daniels are some of the best minds in entertainment now and it shows on Empire.

ReplyDeleteI am almost certain the CW will keep Mondays and Thursdays as the female skewing nights and Tuesdays and Wednesdays as the male skewing nights. Arrow, The Flash and The 100 are huge male skewing shows (even if the DC shows are even more than the 100) while TVD, TO, Reign and Virgin are big female skewing shows. The CW knows this and has been playing with it for a while ever since Arrow launched (they started only with male Wednesdays and gradually expanded it to Tuesday as well). Pedowtiz is on the record as saying they want to keep diversity so I expect these balance of two nights not to change. The only wildcard is Supernatural since it is essentially a 50-50 show which means it can go literally anywhere. Because of this, I highly The 100 goes to Thursdays to pair with TVD. I think the CW is easy to figure out in theoretical terms:

- Female skewing nights (in some combination): The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Jane the Virgin, one newbie. I am less sure about the configuration here but right now my guess would be Newbie | Virgin on Mondays and The Vampire Diaries | The Originas on Thursdays.
If the 100 is kept on a weekday like you were proposing they can only launch one new drama on the fall, which I highly doubt they do.

ReplyDeleteWhen was the last time a show with WHITE PEOPLE got a 6.0 in the Top 25? Name me a white show that goes up every work? So don't tell me that African American shows don't sell well. There are shows with a mainly white cast that gets lower ratings than empire.
ReplyDelete6.0 for Empire is insane! Modern Family and Goldbergs had amazing episodes yesterday so I'm not surprised they did good and I hope they can keep up these numbers even after DST. I didn't watch Nashville and Blackish yet.

Are you the head network? It's rare for a show to get a 5+ demo now of these days. Think of it this way, The Bernie Mac Show & My Wife & Kids all targeted black audiences and they lasted 5 seasons. I don't know what you have against Empire but it's not welcome here.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if The CW can launch a show on Monday just like that. The Originals is already holding the fort there, and moving it to Thursdays, while fixing that night, may risk an entire collapse on Mondays. Sure, maybe JtV can do well on its own, but I don't know if they could actually launch something on Mondays. JtV was kind of a lucky shot, and it got more viewers as it went on due to its acclaim - it did hit 0.4s early on the season.

I think The 100 may come in a weekday during midseason, sharing its timeslot with something else, another limited series. The plus on the fact that the show is a limited series is that it can share its timeslot with another show
It would be terribe if we had to wait a year for The 100's third season, but that's looking more and more likely.

ReplyDeleteABC Wednesdays seem to be holding up nicely. ABC has a brilliant Wednesday line-up this season and they better not mess with it next year. They made a great decision in moving the Goldbergs to Wednesdays. Very compatible with the Middle and good lead-in for Modern Family. And Black-ish is working really well after MF and is holding up really well and hasn't crashed in the ratings like most other MF shows. And Nashville is doing really well this year stable in the 1.3 to 1.5 region. ABC made a good decision in renewing it.
Doesn't The 100 almost always go up form Top 25? I usually see it get 0.4 in top 25.
ReplyDeleteLaura's been tracking a 0.3 increase. So if it is a 1.2, then a 1.5 looks possible. Probably will see another 1.7 for Chicago PD, since a 1.5 translated into that last week.
ReplyDeleteWell, if it goes to Fridays and does about the same as it does on Wednesday, that would be a big win. So I'd be bitting my nails, but who knows? Maybe it's for the best. Sometimes that happens, after trying it out everywhere NBC learnt that Grimm just fits on Fridays and does well there. Maybe that's the natural timeslot for The 100. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking, but here's hoping

ReplyDeleteWould you explain why Fox has a dilemma because viewership is almost 80% African American? Do you say the same when numbers come out for Modern Family or The Big Bang Theory when the majority of the audience is Caucasian. Companies are here to make MONEY no matter where the it is coming from. Although you may not like the show, there are more than AA's watching it.

ReplyDeleteJane the Virgin is nowadays a stronger show in W18-34 than The Originals is and isn't that far off from TVD in that demo either. And I wasn't suggesting using Jane to launch anything new, I was suggesting using local programming, so keeping Jane put and launching the new thing (the Marc Cherry show most likely) at 8pm. Sure it has to go up against the voice, but I think it is a better alternative than Thursdays when it is forced to face TGIT heads on (either at 8 or 9), not to mention the much higher viewing levels on Monday than Thursday. If you accept that the CW will launch a new female show, which I can't not see happening, and considering the possible places for them to do that are Monday and Thursday, I think you will understand why I say that Mondays at 8 is the best slot for the new show. It also has the advantage of potentially stopping the bleeding of TO and of using whatever strength TVD has left in the best possible way: strengthening the spin off that should likely stick around for a couple more years after the parent show is gone.
ReplyDeleteAs for The 100, I think it will either go to Fridays in the fall, go to midseason like you are suggesting or move to summer entirely (this one I doubt a bit due to the extremely long hiatus it would require).
If Laura delivers that kind of rating I'll be surprised. And if it does anywhere near that the following week, I'll expect NBC switching The Night Shift and Laura

ReplyDeleteWhile you make a valid point, typing "white people" in all caps and hinting at racism in programming is not the way to achieve a great dialogue. I'd hope we would get beyond this immaturity in talking about race and how it is perceived in the media. Sadly, this post shows that we haven't.

I think it would be a Dixie-esque performer on Fridays (if it gets the 8pm slot, I don't think it could keep the 0.5s on the 9pm slot though unless something crazy happens like Supernatural going to 8pm as its lead-in) which would be quite okay.

Probably. Someone over TVBTN was telling me yesterday that it was supposed to be a big episode with a lot of special things much like MF and that ABC had been promoting the two a lot.

ReplyDeleteEven with stunt casting I am finding this number too high for Laura. It hasn't done this since week 2 and you have to go back to very early November to find a 1.4. I think it will be lower than this in the nationals. But in any case, I agree with you that it is likely to give back the gains in the next episode. I do wonder though if the end of the mentalist helped a bit too.

ReplyDeleteI think you overstate the gap there is between the ratings of the 100 and reign. There is usually a 0.1 difference, which isn't that much and could likely be gone if the show is forced to move. In any case, I really don't see it hapenning. The CW has no room for the 100 on a weekday, especially on a female night.

ReplyDeleteWell, out of the two midseason dramas it has definitely had the most promotion. However, CSI is a dying branch, Stalker didn't do that good in the time slot and Criminal Minds isn't so strong these days anymore. I think it will hit a 2.0 at best.
ReplyDeleteWhat about moving Izombie to Mondays and freeing up Flash to launch something? If Izombie does well it may be the a safe move.
ReplyDeleteI understand your point, TO after TVD may be the way to ensure that TO doesn't bleed further and that it can inherit its parent show timeslot, but launching something new on Mondays still seems a bit like a risk; local programming doesn't rate bad for The CW, but it is still a bit risky to my eyes. That's why I propose the Izombie move there.
And hell, I hope The 100 doesn't go to summer, at least not right away: if it goes to midseason on season 3 and then gets renewed for season 4, it can go to summer for season 4 as the hiatus wouldn't be as long, but a hiatus of over a year would certainly kill The 100 for good. The Friday option is even better than summer, just so it can avoid the hiatus

where did you get this 80% figure? I doubt a show would get a 5.5 demo rating if 80% of it viewers were African American.

It says 62% of it's 18-49 viewers are AA. and that was for the pilot. The viewership had obviously grown since then. The OP should try again.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think the time I saw that 0.3 made me think really low about Reign. In The CW world a 0.1 makes a great deal of difference, so sometimes one can overstate or just accurately state something.

I do agree that younger viewers are more valued, which is what Empire does have. However, what do you know about the advertising industry about AA? That is so stupid.

ReplyDeleteAnd some of the acting is hilarious. Let's just enjoy the show with its limitations since it is more of a comedy than a drama.
He's exaggerating (and probably has a hidden agenda), but it is true Empire has unprecented high percentage of African American viewers.

So the picture will be much clearer in April once we can tell wherever Izombie is a breakout hit or not. If it does 0.8 or above during the whole season I think that demands a veteran slot, 0.5-0.8 calls for a midseason renewal or Friday slot, maybe. Any lower is cancellation

ReplyDeleteI was expecting it a bit to be honest considering everything else has been repeats this week. I think it is only on to support the 100 this week before the two part finale begins. In any case, if it keeps a 1.0 I will still be happy, although I would obviously prefer a 1.1. Just please not a 0.9!

They have basically renewed everything and they still have to order new shows, so figuring out how the hell they are going to fit everything in is a bit chaotic. There are only so much certainty -Flash, Arrow and TVD will remain where they are -, and so much possibilities!
ReplyDeleteI've only watched the first two episodes of Nashville so I can't really comment from experience but that is a comment I've heard a lot about the show.
ReplyDeleteThe 100 was renewed last year with a super late premiere though (and it wasn't just the olympics, the tomorrow people aired episodes on Wednesday even post olympics). And I don't think they would bother moving Supernatural if it was DOA, they could just air it after Arrow which is still a very good lead-in anyway.
