Ratings Breakdown:
“The Voice” returned on NBC in winning fashion, with a healthy 8.7 rating/13 share in the household overnights from 8-10 p.m. (peaking in the 9 p.m. half-hour at an 8.9/13). Comparably, this was only five percent below the 9.2/14 for the year-ago midseason opener (and that translated into 15.86 million viewers and a 4.7 rating/13 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). And “The Voice” beat competing “The Bachelor” on ABC (6.5/10) by a noticeable 34 percent.
Leading out of “The Voice” was the sophomore season-premiere of NBC medical drama “The Night Shift,” which dipped to a distant third-place 3.4/ 6 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, this trailed competing “NCIS: Los Angeles” on CBS (#1: 6.3/10) and “”Castle” on ABC (#2: 4.7/ 8) by 46 percent and 28 percent, respectively. Retention for “The Night Shift” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “The Voice” (8.8/13) was only 39 percent. And “The Blacklist” on the year-ago evening was double the overnight rating at a 6.7/11. NBC would have been wiser to save season two of “The Night Shift” for the summer.
Over at CBS, 8-9 p.m. sitcoms “2 Broke Girls” (featuring a guest spot by beloved Valerie Harper) and “Mike & Molly” scored a matching 5.5/ 8 in their time periods (#3 each), which was right on par with the year-ago pairing of “How I Met Your Mother” and “2 Broke Girls.” Next was freshman hit “Scorpion” (#2: 6.7/10 from 9-10 p.m.), which built from the comedies by 22 percent. And that led into aforementioned “NCIS: Los Angeles” at a dominant 6.3/10 at 10 p.m., which increased from failed year-ago occupant “Intelligence” (3.9/ 6 on 2/24/14) by a hefty 62 percent. While “NCIS: Los Angeles” is no longer the force it once was airing out of parent “NCIS” on Tuesday, it has put the Eye net back on the Monday 10 p.m. map.
Elsewhere, demo friendly “Gotham” on Fox was consistent at a fourth-place 4.3/ 7 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which will translate at about a 1.8 rating in key adults 18-49. But sophomore lead-out “Sleepy Hollow” closed the season (or series) at a depressed 2.8/ 4 from 9-10 p.m., which was 22 percent below year-ago occupant “The Following” (3.6/ 5 on 2/24/15). And that should translate into about a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49, which is not sufficient out of “Gotham.” Season three of “The Following” opens in the Monday 9 p.m. hour next week.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteNBC should have known better with Night Shift and I don't even care that I'm saying I told you so. The minute they announced this, a lot of us knew it was a huge mistake.
Good job NBC, you screwed over The Night Shift, which was doing fine in the summer, and The Blacklist, which has the best retention from The Voice in the last 2 to 3 years.
ReplyDeleteNBC made a mistake giving The Night Shift The Voice lead in. Originally, I thought it was a good idea but as I wrote yesterday, it was tracking horribly. No one was anticipating this show. A 39% retention is Ready For Love territory. I can't see it staying here at this level.

ReplyDeleteI like that he took a risk in moving The Blacklist feeling that the network would be more competitive on Thursday night. But he shouldn't have surrounded it by two new, unproven dramas. If anything Law & Order:SVU should have also been moved to Thursday as a lead in. They need at least 2 shows that they could depend on to attract viewers. And they still have not figured out The Voice's target audience and what other program most of its viewers would be attracted too. I know they wanted Constantine and Grimm together on Friday but I feel Constantine would have worked better after The Voice than State of Affairs.

Scorpion dropped quite a bit but understandable with the return of The Voice, which looks like it did well! Hope it stays in the 2s though. Surely The Bachelor should be a winner too rather than just an honourable mention?!

ReplyDeleteNBC would have shows reach 2.0 if they maximized The Voice potential. Marry Me, State Of Affairs, The Night Shift were not those shows. They are making terrible post The Voice choices. When that's your top lead in, a network can't do that.
NBC cannot and should not move the backlist back to Mondays. I don't know why people want NBC to keep a show that allegedly cannot stand by itself (which would be the case if they were forced to move it back to Mondays) in their best slot for a new drama while throwing new shows to Thursdays.

SofA premiered with a 2.2 after a much lower rated episode of The Voice.

ReplyDeleteI think it would have been worse/ the same. I think two things went terribly wrong with all of this:
ReplyDelete- The Blacklist became a weaker show this year than it was last season and this happened back in the fall when it was still on Mondays falling the voice. I believe it would have done a better job on Thursdays if it was still as strong as last year. Not sure what NBC could have done to change this.
- NBC made the wrong choices for the Thrursday shows to surround the blacklist with. I can sort of forget them on Allegiance since it is uncommong for a show to be such a huge bomb even with a decent and seemingly compatible lead-in, but The Slap should never have aired at 8pm. They should have gone out of their way to surround the show with a known quantity or something that at least had potential. SVU, The Apprentice, The Biggest Looser, something like that should have gone there. This thing I blame NBC on.
So I don't think the move to Thursday per se was the problem.
After the Voice, it will probably skew a little younger, but I can't see it any higher than a 1.5

I think we both would have predicted those two shows to go the other way. I didn't suggest I knew back then what was going to happen, I am just speaking now with the information that we currently have.

You had a more conservative option that would leave Thursdays on fire for another year, sure, but it wouldn't have blown up on their face like this either.

ReplyDeleteBecause NBC now has no good scheduling solutions for the rest of this season, nor for the next season. Just bad solutions and even more bad solutions. They went all-in and with no Plan B... and lost badly.

ReplyDeleteMaybe you're right, but I disagree. I think Thursday 9 PM is absolutely the worst timeslot NBC could give to the show.
Well, the good news is that you will get your wish at the end. The guy will certainly be fired unless he pulls a miracle next year, if he even lasts the summer (I am not sure when his contract is up, you know those things better than I do).
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that, as it is, Thursdays at 9pm is the worst timeslot for the show. But by definition, part of what makes a timeslot good or bad are the shows airing near it (especially the lead-in). So if you fix or at least improve the adjacent timeslots, you improve the timeslot. I think that with the configuration of The Slap-9pm-Allegiance, that 9pm timeslot is the worst for The Blacklist. Different shows surrounding it would change the dynamics of the timeslot and make it better for The Blacklist. So at the end we are not disagreeing on that, it's just semantics.

ReplyDeleteBut if the next season would be disastrous as this one is (all rookies flopping, and all veterans weakened by unreasonable scheduling), he'll be fired after 2015-16.
Unfortunately, not after this season already, because previous season was NBC had pretty good ratings (save for the comedies). Lucky punch.

ReplyDeleteNo. Again, the problem is not in Blacklist, and it's not Thursday. The problem is Greenblatt's awful schedule as a whole. After one year of moderate success, he boldly went for all of nothing. Which was extremely stupid (successes first needs to be solidified), and his plan predictably failed. Completely failed, with "completely" part not being so predictable.
ReplyDeleteYes, we can blame them because it did perfectly fine in the summer, so it didn't need an upgrade, especially to arguably one of the most difficult timeslots of the week. Granted, that's all JMO, though.

ReplyDeleteAiring after the third highest rated show on broadcast television on the second most viewed day of the week against two aging procedurals is not one of the most difficult slots of the week, it is one of the easiest ones.
ReplyDeleteAnother option is to move Odyssey to air after The Voice and shift TNS (pun intended) from Mondays to Sundays.
ReplyDeleteA lot is also going to ride on A.D. If it premieres well, then he's going to use it to hide a lot of his disappointments. So he has an out this year.
ReplyDeleteHousehold ratings do not count for advertisers, it is the demo that matters. Sleepy Hollow needed a big pickup there and they didn't get it. However FOX still has too many holes to fill and they probably will renew it. I am not surprised about their or Gotham's numbers. Even with the Voice as a terrific lead in The Night Shift was going to have problems going up against Castle and NCIS LA. if NBC didn't have some of their special programming they might be in last place and that is saying something considering how bad FOX is(Empire notwithstanding). NBC definitely needs to fix things, especially Mon at 10. CBS keeps on rolling and people keep watching the Bachelor
ReplyDeleteIt did drop from a 7.7 to a 6.7 from last week, but I guess understandable given the return of The Voice big. It's had strong competition all year so it's definitely done well! I really enjoy the show, but the recent cycle of repeats, original, repeats, original is annoying :(

ReplyDeleteIt's an ongoing problem for NBC. They take shows that work in some way, like Grimm, off the air for months on end. I get there are issues with how many times a show can be rerun do to syndication contracts, but I'm not suggesting running it 50 times.

I think CBS scheduled these breaks really badly, I thought they'd order extra episodes but when they didn't I think the better thing to do would be 2 originals, 2 repeats instead of random breaks.

True, but it can't be helping either. I don't know if it's best to do what cbs are doing which is aring 1 original after 1 or 2 weeks of repeats for the rest of the season, or maybe they should have had a month or so break so they could air more originals in a row?

I never expected that, because not being compatible viewers watching T.B. just leave ABC after it, either turning of the tv or just going watch something else (for example, Better call Saul in cable is a big competition)...
