Ratings Breakdown:
After much speculation, Charlie Sheen was a no-show at the “Two and a Half Men” series-finale on CBS. The entire one-hour episode revolved around Sheen’s character, Charlie Harper, who was still alive and was held captive for four years by his kooky bride Rose (Melanie Lynskey). But Angus T. Jones as the half in the title was back, at least for one scene, as were the revolving door of supporting characters over the years. It was a satisfying conclusion for a sitcom known for not exactly sugarcoating things.
As expected, ratings for the finale were nowhere near the epic numbers for that now classic ninth-season opener (18.7 rating/26 share on 9/19/11) when Ashton Kutcher joined the cast. But “Two and a Half Men,” the longest running comedy in the history of CBS (and second longest running live action sitcom historically – tied with “My Three Sons”) scored a dominant 8.6 rating/13 share in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was a season high, and it built from the regularly scheduled 9 p.m. half-hour one week earlier (5.9/ 9) by a significant 46 percent. “Two and a Half Men” also increased by six percent from the series-premiere of “The Odd Couple,” with Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon, which opened with a time period winning 8.1/13 at 8:30 p.m.
Comparably, “The Odd Couple” debut was 29 percent stronger than former time period occupant “Mom” one week earlier (6.3/10 on Feb. 12). It was also 16 percent above the time period debut of “Mom” on 10/30/14 (7.0/11). And the overnight household retention out of “The Big Bang Theory” (#1 for the evening: 10.7/17 at 8 p.m.) was acceptable at 76 percent. Let’s see what happens next week…and beyond with “The Odd Couple” (which, based on the TVMI forum, is getting a mixed reaction critically).
Sadly, “The Big Bang Theory” addressed the passing of Carol Ann Susi in November when Howard (Simon Helberg) learns that his mother, Mrs. Wolowitz, has died.
Despite the improved lead-in support, CBS drama “Elementary” only managed to finish second in the 10 p.m. hour with a 5.4/ 9, which was 17 percent below competing “How To Get Away With Murder” on ABC (#1: 6.5/11). Comparably, retention for “Elementary” out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Two and a Half Men” (8.7/14) was lacking at 62 percent.
Earlier in the evening on ABC was the consistent 8-10 p.m. combination of “Grey’s Anatomy” (#3: 6.0/ 9) and “Scandal” (#2: 7.2/11), which did not lose steam despite the added competition from CBS.
In week two news, limited NBC drama “The Slap” lost considerable steam from its already lackluster debut with a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, this was down by 26 percent from the 3.9/ 6 one week earlier, and that 3.9 overnight rating translated into just 5.13 million viewers and a 1.1 rating/4 share in adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data).
Opposite the “Two and a Half Men” series-ender, week three of NBC’s relocated “The Blacklist” slipped to a 5.1/ 8 in the overnights from 9-10 p.m., which was 11 percent below the 5.7/ 9 one week earlier. And that 5.7 overnight rating resulted in 8.19 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 in adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data), which was a marked decline from its former Monday 10 p.m. levels.
Also on NBC was week three of drama “Allegiance,” which dipped to a mere 2.3/ 4 at 10 p.m. Three-week overnight track for “Allegiance”: 3.4/ 6 – 2.6/ 4 – 2.3/ 4. Tick. Tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.
Elsewhere, episode five of Fox detective drama “Backstrom” slipped to a series-low 2.5/ 4 (#4) at 9 p.m., which held only 38 percent of its “American Idol” lead-in (#2: 6.5/10 from 8-9 p.m.). And both diluted “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.2/ 2) and sophomore “Reign” (#5: 0.7/ 1) on The CW dropped by one-tenth of a rating point from one week earlier.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteThe Blacklist needs a better lead in. As I've written numerous times, lead ins matter. The Slap will be under a 1 and this is going to push The Blacklist to under a 1.5. Not every show can pull a Chicago Fire and double the demos of a 0.7 lead in. NBC got spoiled there thinking The Blacklist could duplicate.
Also... I wonder if Chicago PD will be the #1 scripted program on NBC this week.

ReplyDeleteMaybe Grey's. Or as I wrote before, they've seen Chicago Fire jump from terrible lead ins and thought, The Blacklist does better in DVRs, so it'll jump more. It didn't happen. I'm not sure how much Greenblatt actually factors in other networks. He seems to make all of his comparisons within his own.

Lead ins matter because it takes only 5 minutes of viewership for Nielsen to capture your viewership (assuming you have one of their boxes) in their system. Commercial breaks are timed exactly so that they last past the five minute mark. So if you turn after the first commercial break (and studies have shown the majority of viewers do that), then you count as a viewer.

ReplyDeleteIf NBC is really serious about keeping TB on Thursdays, it needs to consider moving TV there in the fall to support it and/or double pumping it on Thursdays in the summer with new programming every week so it can try to gain back viewers.

ReplyDeleteIt's approaching worst case scenario with their Thursdays. I don't think they are going to do anything drastic and move The Blacklist to a different day (as there would be no point), but if The Night Shift doesn't hit big next Monday, they are going to be some second guessing and analyzing what went wrong. They ended up showing only marginal improvement on Thursdays and lost traction on Mondays.

ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that when The 100 was at 0.5-0.6 level everyone was saying it would be cancelled, now nearly their entire lineup is at or below that level.
You won't be able to tell until the night shift premieres. To judge the move, you need the average of the night shift on Monday and Blacklist on Thursday. Then you need to compare it with what the blacklist would still be doing on monday and what the night shift would be doing if placed on Thursday. ReplyDeleteIn addition, if the move didn't happen now, it would have to happen next fall for sure since a new drama would need to go to Mondays or else the alternative would be to send it to Thursday wolves by itself (as opposed to the blacklist which had 1.5 season post voice plus super bowl, to gain exposure).
I'm not trying to defend Marc, because it is mean of him to spoil the episode so carelessly on the day after its original airing, but once an episode has aired in its country of origin, generally it can't be considered a spoiler anymore. The world doesn't revolve around what people have on their DVRs. I do understand your frustration when things get spoiled for you, but it's just my honest opinion that if you don't want things spoiled, then don't go online before you've watched.

ReplyDeleteTo judge the move, you need the average of the night shift on Monday and Blacklist on Thursday. Then you need to compare it with what the blacklist would still be doing on monday and what the night shift would be doing if placed on Thursday. ReplyDeleteI'm not sure sure. If Chicago PD can pull a 1.7 without The Voice assistance, The Night Shift should settle in the 1.9 to 2.1 range. If it dips below that, it would be a huge bust for NBC. They are expecting it to sustain in low to mid 2s with this move. When The Night Shift moves (and it will next fall), it's going to decline about 30%, so a 2.0 means that it's likely starting at a 1.4 when it returns. That isn't great for a show that recently received The Voice lead in.

ReplyDeleteI agree. I think they should definitely put Grimm here for the time being. And probably Game Night at 8pm. If they really desperate, and although I don't advocate it, then Ninja Warrior, but I would rather see Game Night since Ninja Warrior does so well in the summer.

But I really don't like to suggest this too much since it would solve the issue on the short term but they would have a big gap on the summer schedule and would risk harming the show (many summer shows have collapsed when asked to be regular season players).

I don't think CPD and TNS have anything to do with each other. They both have their separate fan bases and it's hard to guess TNS's ratings from CPD's.

ReplyDeleteI think CBS won wither way unless Odd Couple flopped badly or TGIT had surges. TGIT averaged 2.70 for the past two weeks. If you assume TBBT at 4.6, TOC at 3, Men at 3.3, then a 1.1 from Elementary would be enough, they would win with 2.73. And I think Elementary can do a 1.4 or so which would make this less dependent on the results from couple and men. We shall see.

I think CBS will win. It would require a combination of TGIT spiking and TOC flopping/ Elementary below average for ABC to take it. Not impossible but I have a hard time seeing it.

Backstorm i think will do all 13 episodes and then be done but the jury's still out on that one.

Well, both NBC and FOX have been very patient and haven't pulled their ill-rated freshmen in the fall, so I can't say if they will do that in the spring.

ReplyDeleteYup, her first real Shondaland appearance. It was actually only an episode or two but it was fairly significant and played a major part in Izzie and Alex's story. I think the over-sharing of so many actors would make any crossover very strange.

Two and a Half Men, being on its twelth season, became very expensive, but good luck finding a new sitcom that gets 2,0s without The Big Bang Theory as lead-in.
