Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy overnight victory for Fox, which experienced the sixth week in a row of growth for new serialized drama “Empire.” “Empire” topped the night at an 8.8 rating/13 share in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m., building from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “American Idol” (8.0/12) by 10 percent. Seven-week overnight track for “Empire”: 6.8/10 – 7.3/11 – 7.6/12 – 7.9/12 – 8.0/12 – 8.2/13 – 8.8/13. One word: unprecedented!

“American Idol,” which still has life left in it, averaged a dominant 7.5/12 from 8-9 p.m., which was 12 percent above the 6.7/10 for the two-hour version on the year-ago evening (when it faced the Winter Olympics on NBC).

In series-finale news, older-skewing CBS drama “The Mentalist” concluded its seven-season run in the 9 p.m. hour with a second-place 6.4/10 in the household overnights. The regularly scheduled 8-9 p.m. telecast scored a 6.3/10, which also finished second, and it bested similar appeal “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC (3.9/ 6) by a hefty 64 percent. On the fence “Stalker,” which is heading on hiatus, capped off the night for the Eye net with a second-place 4.5/ 8 at 10 p.m., which trailed competing “Chicago PD” on NBC (4.6/ 8) by one-tenth of a rating point. “Chicago PD” will, no doubt, hold a greater advantage in the key demographics.

Next Wednesday, CBS will feature the 90-minute midseason opening episodes of reality/competitions “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.”

On ABC, “Modern Family” was the Wednesday standout, of course, with a third-place 6.0/ 9 in the overnights in the 9 p.m. half-hour. Comparably, that outdelivered demo friendly lead-in “The Goldbergs” (#3: 4.4/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.) by a considerable 36 percent, but “Modern Family” is no longer the dominant show in the time period in the key demos opposite “Empire.”

Next on ABC was freshman “black-ish (#4” 4.2/ 6 at 9:30 p.m.), which like “Modern Family” has also lost steam opposite “Empire.” And “black-ish” led into a typically 3.5/ 6 for three-year old “Nashville” at 10 p.m.

Earlier in the evening on ABC was “The Middle,” which is worthy of a seventh season renewal, at a typically comfortable 5.2/ 8 (#3) in the 8 p.m. half-hour.

Elsewhere, veteran “Law & Order: SVU” scored a typical 4.2/ 6 from 9-10 p.m. (#4), leading into aforementioned “Chicago PD” at a 4.6/ 8 (#1) from 10-11 p.m. And The CW was below average care of dramas “Arrow” (#5: 1.9/ 3) and “The 100” (#5: 1.0/ 2), which dipped by 44 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of “Arrow” (1.8/ 3).

  1. Empire just broke into that 5. Damn!!!

    ReplyDelete
  2. Insane numbers for Empire.
So we directly get Top25. I hope The100 and Arrow won't fall.
    Hoping for Stalker to raise.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Go empire! love that show

    ReplyDelete
  4. yeah i´d say so last top25 we saw from feb 5 had empire top25 at 4.8 that translated into 18-49 4.6 so i´m gonna go with 5.2

    ReplyDelete
  5. That's amazing. I'm so happy or the show.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Looks like the next goal of Empire is 6's! Insane.

Anybody knows the real episode count of Empire? 12 or 11?

    ReplyDelete
  7. The Mentalist looks crappy low for a series finale. Elsewhere, it's business as usual with Empire still growing and The 100 at another 0.5.

    ReplyDelete
  8. 5.6. Wow. Great for Empire.

Nice rebound for SVU if it holds and great for Chicago PD. Chicago PD's advantage is what I thought we would have seen sooner, but at least it is finally breaking out against Nashville and Stalker. Great episode for Chicago PD also.

    ReplyDelete
  9. EMPIRE!!!!!!!![I'm gonna type this every WED. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. It's fine. Probably will get a 0.9 (MAYBE a 1.0) I knew the ratings would drop a bit since it was a flashback episode.

    ReplyDelete
  11. it wont go below 1.0 so thats a full season so far +1.0 so compared to other cw show its a rating star

    ReplyDelete
  12. Its down one tenth vs the top 25 2 weeks ago which held the 1.2

    ReplyDelete
  13. No Criminal Minds benefitted Empire and SVU.

When CM returns, Empire will probably have its first ratings, week-to-week dip. What a run though.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm elated. Congrats are in order for the cast of Empire. It is beyond amazing what this show is achieving. This brings back high expectations for broadcast TV shows. Empire is groundbreaking. This is fantastic!.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Because CM sub 2 ratings are so strong...

    ReplyDelete
  16. a) Empire already had a week-to-week dip.
    b) I really doubt CM is, in any way, affecting CM.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It doesnt need to fall. 3x10 kept the top 25 markets. So it might not drop at all.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like your second statement lol ;)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I expected more for Arrow. Still 1.1 is not bad.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Criminal Minds affects SVU but definitely doesn't affect Empire. It's the other way around as Empire has been affecting Criminal Minds. Plus Minds won't be on next week as Survivor and Amazing Race will have their premieres.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "b) I really doubt CM is, in any way, affecting CM."

    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I really hope The Middle holds that 2.2 or stays stead vs last week at a 2.1. That was such a good episode. Both funny and sad.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Where is the analysis???? I want to know the HH ratings lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. Marc's HH Analysis has just been added

    ReplyDelete
  25. Criminal Minds has always had a strong AA audience. As does SVU. These shows have always impacted each other. It's not a stretch to propose Empire jump of a full demo point might have somewhat influenced by decreased competition.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ugh why couldn't The Middle be higher :(

    ReplyDelete
  27. Empire!!!! This show just keeps on growing!!! Also good for the ABC comedies and Empire is bringing Idol back up there. Terrible for Nashville, Laura, Stalker and Mentalist if those numbers hold. SVU rebounds and CPD doing good at least until CSI Cyber comes in.

    ReplyDelete
  28. How good is Empire???!!! What is this show about?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Following your logic, if Empire has been taking viewers away from CM, then it means there's audience overlap. That's why CM's absence benefits Empire. I'm surprised this is such a shocking concept. I'm not saying Empire's full increase is due to CM. But some of it is.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have heard that the only true bright spot on Empire is Taraji's Cookie.

Can't comment further since i've never watched.

    ReplyDelete
  31. And I'm really concerned about Nashville once CSI: Cyber comes in. With Patricia's new exposure from Oscars, I feel CSI: Cyber will do better than Stalker. Nashville is doing horribly behind the comedies while facing very little competition.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Has Empire improved at all? I really don't understand why so many people are watching, I think the same thing though for TWD, GOT & several other popular shows so maybe it's just a case of it's just not a show for me.

    ReplyDelete
  33. SVU and CM impact each other because they are geared toward the same crime watching audience. Empire does not fit into that at all.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Terrance Howard is also brilliant in his role as patriarch of the family.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Empire is a beast from another time. Growing week to week?

    ReplyDelete
  36. It should be clarified so not to confuse it with something else, Cookie is her characters name. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  37. its fun soapy dramedy, its about family empire and who should run it

    ReplyDelete
  38. "-Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “Empire” (Fox), “Modern Family” (ABC)
    -Honorable Mention:
“The Middle” (ABC), “The Goldbergs” (ABC), “The Mentalist” (CBS)
    -Losers (excluding repeats):
“The Mysteries of Laura” (NBC), “The 100” (CW)"

What does this man have against Arrow? He never mentions it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's probably more like a 2.0 :(. I really don't understand why it seemingly went down.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The 100 is getting boring...they should pick up "Constantine" and put it after Arrow...

    ReplyDelete
  41. It's incredible the growth of this show!!! Really impressive...that's why I'm so curious about it!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. He actually labels it a winner quite often...

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nashville is a loser too

    ReplyDelete
  44. The Mentalist last week: 6.0/10, this week: 6.4/10-6.3/10

    ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤v

    ReplyDelete
  45. He does? I don't remember seeing it in the winners circle!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Both CM and SVU have very strong African American audiences. That's a fact.

    ReplyDelete
  47. He selectively chooses the shows.

    ReplyDelete
  48. What's your source? Last night in the preview of next episode, the voice over said "last four night".

    ReplyDelete
  49. Empire has grown week to week in the total audience numbers. That's what I was referring to. You're right on the demos.

    ReplyDelete
  50. he rarely does it. He needs to be reminded.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Like I said, can't comment further.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 1) Are you even watching The 100? It seems to me you don't otherwise you would know it is far and far from boring.
    2) Constantine is from NBC so the CW wouldn't pick that up.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Isn't Constantine from WB, though?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I there a reason or does he generally hate the show?

    ReplyDelete
  55. You are about to get a lot of hate...

    ReplyDelete
  56. If you were referring to viewership levels, you should've made that clear.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Guesses:
    - The Middle: 2.1
    - The Goldbergs: 2.0 (it would be the first time it wouldn't have built on the middle though so take this with an extra grain of sat)
    - Modern Family: 2.9
    - Blakish: 1.9
    - Nashville: 1.0-1.1 (seems too low though)

    - SVU: 1.4-1.5
    - Chicago PD: 1.4-1.5

    - Amerian Idol:
    - Empire: 5.1 (Holy crap!)

    - Arrow: 0.9-1.0 ( sadly... I hope this is wrong!)
    - The 100: 0.6 (but I might as well guess 0.5 sadly)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Stvplus.com and search Empire unless the 12th episode is for next season.

    ReplyDelete
  59. It also shows how the music industry operates. So it is interesting to see this family's dysfunction as they struggle to work with each other to keep this business empire afloat.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Just got back from shopping and found this out!!!! Go Empire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5+ demo is in store!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. It depends on what failsFebruary 19, 2015 at 2:45 PM

    8.8, Empire is unbelievable.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I don't think it will be able to keep the 1.1 in finals. But I pray to be wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  63. If Blackish gets a 1.9 then something needs to be done...

    ReplyDelete
  64. That's possibe, but since it was airing on NBC I don't think the CW would pick it up.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Pray that you are right.

    ReplyDelete
  66. well imdb has them at 12 and but i pretty sure they said 12 at the TCA this year and that only do another 12 for season 2

    ReplyDelete
  67. I find those top 25 ratings for Laura and the mentalist puzzling as they would suggest Laura had a huge spike against the mentalist finale which is kind of absurd.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think it broke a 5.0 last night judging by those top 25 ratings. Insane!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm thinking empire hits 5.2 :)

    ReplyDelete
  70. I want at least a 1.0... I want the show to stay above 1.0 for the remainder of the season. I'll be very happy if that happens!

    ReplyDelete
  71. I would be over the moon if that happens. But it will be so hard for that to happen once DST hits!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Though the HH look down :(

    ReplyDelete
  73. You just said "viewership levels". Which viewership? Why weren't you clear that you meant total viewership? You should have made that more clear, Andrew.

Or I could just take your comment at face value rather than looking for ways to correct you.

    ReplyDelete
  74. is Richmond a big market? since the 100 were preempted in that market?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Nah. If it gets 1.9 or so against a 5+ Empire, it is fine. It couldn't have a better excuse than that. The shows are going directly to the same audience, it is normal. In any case, Empire will be over relatively soon and I bet FOX puts it at 8 next season.

    ReplyDelete
  76. At this point, I am not even sure it matters. I just automatically assume that the 100 will adjust down like always.

    ReplyDelete
  77. The Futon Critic which is normally very reliable have it at 13 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I was under the impression that FOX had confirmed it was 12 at the TCAs.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I only know it was preempted because CW Richmond tweeted about it and it was RT on my TL. And they wont air it till Saturday.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Same old, same old, Marc Berman. And of course Arrow doesn't even get an Honorable Mention. It's not like it's a winner for its network.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Explains why he's not so fond of The 100 either.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Think GoT, but instead of a Midevil setting, it's a Music Business Empire setting and instead of Swords and Magic it has microphones and guns.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I asked the writers last night and they said 12

    ReplyDelete
  84. I really think it broke a 5.0 last night judging by those top 25 markets.

    ReplyDelete
  85. but he´s not doing a best of CW reports

    ReplyDelete
  86. I am just wondering if this spring will be similar to last year. Where we had preemptions almost every week.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I don't even read his analysis anymore I just wait for top 25 or go straight to comments.

    ReplyDelete
  88. I hope not. I hated when that happened.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Not really. I do think it's odd to consistently seek out ways to correct other posters. Whatever floats your boat.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Richmond is not a big market. It is only number 58.

    ReplyDelete
  91. he always labels Flash as a winner though. I guess tat's becuase it's the highest rated show on the network tough.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I mean just a few weeks ago he was putting Laura as honorable mention. Arrow is not that far off.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Yeah, there is no way to avoid that one. Even he knows that.

    ReplyDelete
  94. i think its because the HH are still on a high lvl.

    ReplyDelete
  95. He's a journalist, so he should be impartial. I think Arrow is a winner for The CW.
Based on ithe results it gets, I believe he should recognize that, instead of only bashing Supernatural and The 100.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Wasn´t Arrow in the honourable mentions last week? then people complaint that it wasn´t winner! This week it´s down in HH thats what he reported about nothing else

    ReplyDelete
  97. So if it loses 0.1 it isn't worthy anymore? don't you see how biased he is?

    ReplyDelete
  98. He reports the numbers and if they are up he mentioned it if they are constantly down he writes about that..... but whatever let him annoy you every single week

    ReplyDelete
  99. Maybe they were wrong but I heard that the vast majority of Blackish's audience is in fact white.

    ReplyDelete
  100. And you go on defending him, It's not like he "casually" has good words for the show he loves (Jane the Virgin, Mom...).

    ReplyDelete
  101. As predicted, no CM definitely helped Empire, which is great. LoveMeSomeCookie! I just hope it doesn't turn into The OC where it was too much too soon. Great show even if it is following the Dynasty template in so many ways.

    ReplyDelete
  102. This week its down from last week other shows did better, it has nothing to do with whats worthy or not its about the numbers people take his comments way to serious they matter nothing when you look at the finale ratings although most time they are spot on when looking at ratings not the quality of the shows.

    ReplyDelete
  103. He put it after Arrow got a 1.2 in the demo and some commenters said Arrow at least should be honorable mention if he puts Laura into category. He said he will think about it for next week. And that is what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  104. he has JTV always as a looser and this season mom has been doing well in the ratings, and i don´t think i´m defending him rather just pointing out that he´s reporting the freaking actual numbers its not like hes making them up and spinning some horrid tales about your favorite show.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I read an article stating the opposite. I don't have the link though so you will have to take my word for it, for whatever it is worth.

    ReplyDelete
  106. or maybe because the flash has good ratings just a crazy thought

    ReplyDelete
  107. So will Empire hit a 5? Leave your predictions below

    ReplyDelete
  108. Going to go with a 5.0

    ReplyDelete
  109. i think only having 12 episode is gonna help the show stay great, in fact i think more show should do fewer episode per season i´d rather have 12 quality episode rather than 22 where half of them feel like fillers

    ReplyDelete
  110. According to Nielsen, before EMPIRE started, only 24% of black-ish's audience was black.

    ReplyDelete
  111. http://money.cnn.com/2015/01/28/media/empire-blackish-murder/

That's the link with the African-American ratings as of the end of January 2015.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Then why say that he thinks Jane the Virgin is the newcomer series most worthy of a larger audience? I understand if he says that on his personal twitter or facebook account, but that's a journalism piece.

Mom is doing well, but we can see The Big Bang Theory rises its results , when it's on. Mom still does better than The Millers and it got awards. I recognize that.

Why doesn't he report the numbers and comment them like an actual journalist, not a fan?

    ReplyDelete
  113. 5.1 but more would be even more awesome

    ReplyDelete
  114. CM got series low a few weeks a go against Empire.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Because he´s likes the show, its not like he´s the only journalist that does and why shouldn´t he say that he thinks JTV deserves better in his own column that is posted on his own website he´s not writing it for spoilertv. I get wanting to see praise for your favorite show but if its a CW other than the Flash the numbers don´t usually warrant a honourable mention and in most cases the HH indicates they belong in the looser section (HH ratings wise) when looking at the ratings results for the night.

He probably dosen´t even watch spn,arrow,the100 so he reports their numbers i just fail to see some giant conspiracy against certain shows.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Empire has 13 episodes this season and 22 for Season 2.

    ReplyDelete
  117. The 100 >>>> Constantine

    ReplyDelete
  118. Empire is a beast!

    ReplyDelete
  119. are you sure about that? because the show runner clearly stated at this years TCA that they wouldn´t do more than 12 episodes per season, and someone here just confirmed its only 12 for season 1 got it straight from the shows writers.

    ReplyDelete
  120. It depends on what failsFebruary 19, 2015 at 3:30 PM

It's 12 according to the writers and Taraji herself.

    ReplyDelete
  121. WTF Empire!!!!!!!! And good for the 100! Ouch for mentalist finale

    ReplyDelete
  122. Ouch nashville, in revenge territory now

    ReplyDelete
  123. He's"not fond of The 109" cause it usually looses half or more of Arrows audience and isn't improving on what TTP did in that slot this time last year

    ReplyDelete
  124. It's really good to know that outstanding ratings like this can still be achieved by newcomers, as long as the right story, characters, and drama (or comedy, depends on the show) are aligned perfectly in one vehicle. I hope Empire continues this pattern of growth as long as it possibly can!

    ReplyDelete
  125. Nashvilles up against Empire

    ReplyDelete
  126. Based on last nights preview and mathematics 4 more nights plus 7 episodes aired means 11 episodes, unless finale is gonna be 2 hours then maybe 12

    ReplyDelete
  127. New definition of insanity - Empire ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  128. EMPIRE had its best episode last night and it really deserves these ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  129. the writers and cast are confirming 12 for season 1

    ReplyDelete
  130. I don't know how much you follow the ratings, but Arrow is among the highest rated series of The Cw (it's the second). I think that to ignore Arrow's good results is like ignoring Once Upon a Time (which is not the highest rated series of Abc, but on its fourth season, it's the third highest drama of its network).

    ReplyDelete
  131. Where? IMDb is listing 13 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  132. So then finale has to be two hours which could make sense because then idol would get a break and then cut done to one episode a week

    ReplyDelete
  133. I follow ratings just fine and i´m not saying arrow has bad ratings or that it isn´t great that its maintaining most of its season 2 ratings what i´m just saying is that MB isn´t basing is columns on what is a success for the CW its about the HH for all networks.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Will Empire continue this trend for the rest of the season?
Also, while were are talking about that, the promo after last night episode said 4 more nights, so I assume that the finale will be a double-episode and Idol will be taking a break that night?

    ReplyDelete
  135. but only 12 for season 1, and the 13th one is listed for season 2

    ReplyDelete
  136. Ah interesting, my mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  137. It depends on what failsFebruary 19, 2015 at 3:40 PM

    I could see that happening.

  138. Yea, it's a 12 episode season. I could definitely see FOX trying to push for more next season but I hope they stick to their guns and stay at 12, maybe 13 - 15 tops. But I'd refer they keep quality in mind over rushing out more because of great ratings. FOX can really market it as an event every year in January when it returns... I have no doubt a nice long break and lots of hype can make season 2 even bigger than season 1.

  139. When I heard that, I figured a two hour finale, yeah. With only four more "nights" to go, growing at least a tenth each night is a definite possibility given its pattern so far. I hope it does continue this trend.

  140. I have had just about ENOUGH with these The100 ratings. Anyone not watching this show (which is clearly a lot) is missing out on something special. AXE & kitchen knife murder from a bunch of delinquent teens??!!! Yes.. this has happened.. yes you are missing out.

  141. I heard Tatraj,Terrance or the showrunners only want short seasons

  142. Fox is smart to make Empire an event with only 4 episodes left. Viewership will probably continue to grow since people know that the series is about to come to a conclusion.

  143. It seems odd that they would do a two-hour Empire - especially with DST starting soon. Empire seems to have helped AI stablize or at least tamp down the erosion, but maybe this was the plan from beginning as FOX did say they were reducing the number of AI hours. I am surprised that they didn't add a couple of episodes since they were filming in late January well after the ratings hit and it had already been renewed.
