ABC led this second Thursday in the household overnights, beating No. 2 CBS by 12 percent. But the more interesting story was the series-debut of limited NBC drama “The Slap,” which finished a distant fourth in the 8 p.m. hour with a 3.9 rating/6 share in the household overnights. Since most new series drop in the vicinity of 10 to 20 percent in week two, this is by no means a solid start for “The Slap.” But, in a time period that has kept NBC out of the competitive loop for years, that 3.9 overnight rating – excluding NFL Football and “Peter Pan Live!” (on 12/04/14) – was actually a season high for NBC. Comparably, “The Slap” was 11 percent above the 3.5/ 6 for the two-hour season-ending overnights for former time period occupant “The Biggest Loser” (on Jan. 29). And it did not lose any steam in the second half-hour.
Keep in mind that “The Slap” faced an encore telecast of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS (#1: 6.9/11), which will not bode well for it once Sheldon and Leonard and company are back in originals next week (into the debut of the new version of sitcom “The Odd Couple”). Now lets wait and see what the demos look like, which is likely to skew older.
Considerably better news for NBC was week two of “The Blacklist” in the Thursday 9 p.m. hour at a second-place 5.9/ 7 in the overnights, which was 17 percent below competing “Scandal” on ABC (#1: 7.1/11). Comparably, this was a hefty 46 percent above lead-in “The Slap.” But “The Blacklist” was also 16 percent below the 6.8/11 for its time period debut one week earlier (which translated into 10.11 million viewers and a 2.4 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). As predicted, “The Blacklist” on Thursday has clearly given NBC a lift, but it is not as strong as it was in its familiar Monday 10 p.m. hour.
Leading out of “The Blacklist” was week two of drama “Allegiance,” which sunk to a distant third-place 2.6/ 4 in the household overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, this was 24 percent below the already minimal 3.4/ 6 debut one week earlier (which translated into 4.98 million viewers and a 1.1/ 4 among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). And the overnight retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “The Blacklist” (5.7/ 9) was a mere 46 percent. Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.
In what should be considered the best retooling of any evening for any network this season, veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC opened with a 6.0 rating/10 share in the overnights from 8-9 p.m. Comparably, this finished third behind a repeat of aforementioned “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS (#1: 6.9/ 11) and an original installment of sophomore “Mom” (#2: 6.3/10 at 8:30 p.m.), and “American Idol” on Fox (#1 overall: 6.8/11). And it led into aforementioned “Scandal” (#1: 7.1/11) at 9 p.m., followed by freshman hit “How To Get Away With Murder” (#1: 6.1/11 at 10 p.m.). Comparably, “How To Get Away With Murder” beat the competition in the overnights — “Elementary” on CBS (5.2/ 9) and “Allegiance” on NBC (#3: 2.6/ 4) — by 17 percent and 135 percent, respectively.
Also on CBS was the next-to-last episode of “Two and a Half Men” (#2: 5.7/ 9) at 9 p.m. into another encore telecast of “The Big Bang Theory” (#3: 5.0/ 8 at 9:30 p.m.).
Elsewhere, episode four of detective drama “Backstrom” on Fox (#4: 2.8/ 4 at 9 p.m.) got a minor lift, increasing by eight percent from the 2.6/ 4 one week earlier. But the overnight retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “American Idol” (7.0/11) was only 40 percent. And this was still 46 percent below its debut just three weeks earlier. Four-week overnight track for “Backstrom”: 5.2/ 8 – 3.4/ 6 – 2.6/ 4 – 2.8/ 4.
The CW capped off the night with fading “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.3/ 2) and sophomore “Reign” (#5: 0.8/ 1), which dropped by 38 percent.

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

I think it depends if they pull Backstorm or not. The show will be cancelled but if it actually increases in the demo today it probably has a shot of airing its entire order in here which means FOX will go through with its idea of doing Bones-Backstorm on Thursdays and keeping Idol only on Wednesdays. But if Backstorm has to be pulled, I suspect they will do Bones-American Idol on Thursdays for the entire spring.

Really depends how old it skews. My guess is that it would appear to skew quite old which would bring the demo numbers down a fair bit.
ReplyDeleteI think Reign is doing good, but no one sees it that way. It's still going ''strong'' against huge competition. I'm a big Reign fan, but I have to say, that Reign is the CW with the biggest competition and in the toughest time slot. Last weeks rating was a 0.36, so it could be a 0.3, but again HH doesn't mean anything, like you said.

They're focusing on totally boring characters, giving no meaty stories to the one's people who've stuck with the show since the start care about. Rehashing the same old stories and creating uninteresting new ones. And the promos have focused ONLY on Jackson and April for weeks now, which is ridiculous. I couldn't care less about Jackson + April / Katherine + Richard / Amelia + Owen.
ReplyDeleteGive Alex a real story! Push Meredith back to the center of the show. Give us the Bailey we used to love. Explore the fact that Richard has a DAUGHTER now... I dunno, last night's episode was directed so overly-soapy and it just felt so dull. Caterina Scorsone and Sara Drew are both over-the-top in their emotional scenes, it's actually off-putting (to me). Bottom line, the show is boring me.
I wouldn't be surprised if Reign drops. The showrunner has become a wannabe Julie Plec with all the love triangles and the forced romantic "connections" despite the fact the fans have said multiple times they have no interest in seeing the main couple in a love triangle.

ReplyDeleteI liked him initially when he 1st came on the show but now he's taking up way too much screen-time for my comfort and also dragging the show down creatively in the process!
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, I find this season extremely good. The Japril drama was a bit too much even for me, but hey, they barely got screen time in the first 5 episodes or so. I even found last week's filler a brilliant episode. I was so happy to see that TBBT didn't have any impact on Grey's and now it'll most likely fall to a new low against a repeat :(
