Led by freshman blockbuster “Empire,” Fox got over the Wednesday “hump” in typically winning fashion, besting No. 2 CBS by 2.1 household rating points. Amazingly, “Empire” posted its fifth consecutive week of overnight growth, topping the night at an 8.2 rating/13 share in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this built from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “American Idol” (7.7/12) by six percent, and the 8.0 overnight rating last week translated into 11.47 million viewers and a 4.6 rating/14 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data). Six-week overnight track for “Empire”: 6.8/10 – 7.3/11 – 7.6/12 – 7.9/12 – 8.0/12 – 8.2/13.
Overall, “American Idol” scored a dominant 7.4/12 in the overnights from 8-9 p.m., which was right on par with the year-ago evening (opposite the Winter Olympics on NBC).
On CBS, soon-to-conclude drama “The Mentalist” finished second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.0/10, which outdelivered competing (and similar appeal) “The Mysteries of Laura” on NBC (#4: 3.9/ 6) by a healthy 54 percent. Chances of a second season renewal for “The Mysteries of Laura” continue to diminish each week.
Next on NBC was veteran “Law & Order: SVU” at a fourth-place 4.1/ 6, which was two-tenths of a rating point (or five percent) below the 4.3/ 7 one week earlier. And it led into sophomore “Chicago PD” at a 4.3/ 7 (#2) at 10 p.m., which dipped by 16 percent from the 5.1/ 9 one week earlier. On ABC, always reliable sitcom “The Middle” remained just that at a third-place 5.4/ 9 in the overnights at 8 p.m. And that led into a typical 4.6/ 7 (#3) for sophomore “The Goldbergs,” which should be enough to hold a minor advantage over “The Middle” among key adults 18-49. Next was “Modern Family,” which is no longer the top draw in the time period (or the night) in the demo, at a diluted (but still healthy) 6.2/10 (#3) at 9 p.m. And it led into freshman ‘black-ish” at a 4.4/ 7 (#3) at 9:30 p.m., which dropped by 29 percent.
“Nashville” capped off the night for the alphabet net with a typically modest 3.6/ 6 at 10 p.m., which was equal to one week earlier.
Elsewhere, CBS was consistent with its combination of aforementioned “The Mentalist” (#2: 6.0/10), “Criminal Minds” (#3: 6.3/10) and on-the-fence “Stalker” (#1: 4.9/ 8). Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteLaw and Order: SVU keeps going lower and lower against Empire. It's a shame because the episodes itself are doing very well. Didn't expect Chicago PD to fall 16% though. That's a rough drop for that show.

ReplyDeleteAnd agreed. I love Arrow, but this season is sort of all over the place, and The 100 is having a fantastic run. It's crazy that Arrow has gotten better ratings this year, and The 100 is struggling.
I mean it had a better rating than Arrow the week it premiered. The numbers being so low is a fault of the show.
ReplyDeleteWith Chicago Fire, you can blame terrible comedy lead ins. It'll right itself eventually if NBC figures out 9 PM. With Chicago PD, no clue. It has shown signs that it is independent from SVU. Is it really 16% dependent still on Chicago Fire? I thought that it got beyond that point.
ReplyDeleteRegardless, obvious scheduling says put Chicago Fire and Chicago PD back to back. If fans watch the casts together, they will watch them back to back. That will help sustain both shows. We'll have to see if Greenblatt actually sees the obvious scheduling play.
Only Nashville is steady in HH versus last week,Stalker rose 0.1,The Mentalist rose 0.2 and Empire rose 0.2.Everything else dropped especially Modern Family,American Idol and Chicago PD.

And I hate it when he kkeps saying The 100 didn't deserve to be renewed and JtV did because it was nominated for a GG.
Shows always drop post-premiere. The pilot might not have been the show's best episode, but the show is at an incredibe quality level right now. It deserves so much higher ratings, especially when comparing it to Arrow which has been very uneven this season.

ReplyDeleteBerman has a lot of dislike for certain shows and, except for JTB, for most of the shows on the CW. He can't deny the Flash ratings are good, but he can downgrade the other shows. I'm sure he's also frustrated that he can't say thus and so CW show should be canceled because they have all been renewed. So he's reduced to telling us that whatever show is on the CW SHOULD be canceled to make himself feel better. I will say the renewal of all the CW shows made me happy just because I knew it would drive him nuts.

ReplyDeleteThe 100 is getting 0.5-0.6 ratings (mostly 0.5s) since the third episode of the first season. I remember two 0.6 out of Arrow's repeats during the first season. The 100 has its own fanbase (unfortunately it isn't huge in the US). Does he really expect it to get 0.9 because Arrow got 1.1? anyway, I wish it was only him. But of course not, every single week some fans of Hart of Dixie talk about the bad retention two serialized series like The 100 and Reign have. I mean, congrats to Hart of Dixie for the two incredible 0.5s it got on fridays, during the last three weeks, but it's not like it would suddenly rise to 0.8-0.9 if it had a compatible and strong lead-in. I like all the series I'm talking about, but If these "wars" could be stopped, that'd be great. I hope The CW renews Hart of Dixie, so maybe those Hart of Dixie fans will not bash Beauty and the Beast because of the renewal it seems it got.

And under this logic The Flash should be only a honorable mention every Tuesday, but Marc always list it as a winner, even when The Voice was on and getting high 3s, and The Flash was pulling mid 1s, so why not Arrow?

ReplyDeleteSo another night The 100 gets 0.6 and gets adjusted down to 0.5? It really is a great show just like others said before. It is one of the few shows that just makes me sit there and not let me leave my seat. I really hope that it gets more viewers when it is airing season 3!

ReplyDeleteSo I guess once BATB ratings come trickling in, the author would all be go like: "Beauty and the Beast is not worthy of an advanced fourth season renewal (if already confirmed via press release)" every week.

No, I really don't think race is too much of an issue. One is a half-hour comedy, the other a drama. One has music featured prominently, the other focuses more on the culture. Blackish had dipped before Empire came on, and it's taking everything in its path, not just Blackish.

ReplyDeleteI know! The complaints about Marc bother me more than what Marc says. I'm getting so tired of them. Hey, don't like what he says? Just pay attention to the HH numbers he's putting out there and let his words walk on by. Not hard to do. What he has to say about various shows harms those shows in no way, and nobody should take offense on behalf of their show. And if his words are just too much, ignore his column and wait for the Nielsen numbers. Gee! Thanks Amber for saying the obvious in a lot less words than I did!
ReplyDeleteCW never promoted it and the pilot wasn't good. Some people dont' give it a chance past pilots. Also, it's heavy serialized. People can't miss any episdoes. Lots of people are turned off by heavily serialized shows.

I actually think that the pilot by itself wasn't that bad. It's the string of weak episodes that followed that was a problem. Of course, the show recovered quickly after that (and surpassed everyone's expectations while at it), but not everyone had patience to see that.

ReplyDeleteArrow had some really poor episodes during 3A but I fairly enjoyed its comeback, till last week and Oliver's decision to train with Malcolm. Just awful decision and as you said they bent them to fit the story.

ReplyDeleteI do love that The 100 fans stay tuning every week and the ratings keep staying steady. Shows the writers are doing a great job keeping the viewers interested.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why people expect something different with the ratings every week. It's not going to suddenly start getting 0.7 or higher. It's a heavily serialzied show and this is it's fanbase. I agree though that more people should be watcing since it's one of the best shows on TV. I'm just happy we have a season 3!
I don't understand why the demo goes down for so many 1 hour shows in the 2nd hour. Do people just watch half of an episode each week? lol.

ReplyDeleteIs still Laurel hate? I thought people are actually lking her new direction. Some were mad at the way the writers make Felicity encourage Laurel, for example, but not at the character... au contraire, they were pretty excited of having the two females bond.

ReplyDeleteI think there always will be a small portion of audience who can't get over season 1 and season 2 Laurel. They might skip Laurel heavy episodes. Even then how many of them will be Neilson households for it to make a difference. This dip might be due to several reasons. Last episode had such varied reactions among fans. Half the audience reacted badly to Oliver working with Malcolm. Some might have been put off by that.
ReplyDeleteI read a few posts of people who watched The 100 S1 after seeing how many of us on spoilertv liked it, but said it was not their cup of tea....some still had an issue for beeing to teenie (because of casting)......
