-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Tuesday 2/11/14:
Note: NBC aired the XXII Winter Olympics from Sochi on the year-ago evening.
CW: +250, CBS: +78, ABC: +55, Fox: +18, NBC: -82
———-
Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. These overnights are your first look at the ratings and a precursor to what could lie ahead. And we take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.
-Winners:
“NCIS” (CBS), “The Flash” (CW), “NCIS: New Orleans” (CBS)
-Honorable Mention:
“Chicago Fire” (NBC)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
“Parks and Recreation” (NBC), “Marry Me” (NBC), “New Girl” (Fox), “About a Boy” (NBC), “The Mindy Project” (Fox)
———-
Ratings Breakdown:
Typically dominant CBS was well above the competition care of its combination of “NCIS” (#1 for the night: 11.4 rating/18 share), spin-off “NCIS: New Orleans” (9.6/15) and “Person of Interest” (6.2/11). All three led their time periods in the household overnights, but “Person of Interest” at 10 p.m. could ultimately trail NBC’s competing “Chicago Fire” (#2: 4.3/ 7) in adults 18-49 (and the other key demos). Stay tuned.
In week two news, episodes three and four of ABC sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” lost steam from its time period protected two-episode debut last Wednesday (out of “The Middle” at 8:30 p.m. and “Modern Family” at 9:30 p.m.). That was expected. But both half-hours placed a respectable second in their time periods last night, with the regularly scheduled half-hour at a 4.5/ 7 at 8 p.m. (down by 18 percent from the 5.5/ 8 for the Wednesday 8:30 p.m. debut on Feb. 4) and a 4.1/ 6 at 8:30 p.m. (also down by 18 percent from the 9:30 p.m. telecast last Wednesday – 5.0/ 8). The two half-hours, on average, bested two episodes of competing “Parks and Recreation” on NBC (8 p.m. #5: 2.2/ 3; 8:30 p.m.: #5: 1.7/ 3) by an average of 121 percent. And they were only 14 percent, on average, below the 5.0/ 8 for a week-ago telecast of “Shark Tank” in the Tuesday 8 p.m. hour (5.0/ 8 on Feb. 3).
“Fresh Off the Boat,” additionally, was 25 percent, on average, above the series premieres of former failed time period occupants “Selfie” (3.7/ 6) and “Manhattan Love Story” (3.2/ 5) on 9/30/14. While certainly not spectacular last night, the best word to describe the Tuesday opening for “Fresh Off the Boat” is promising. Next Tuesday, comical reality half hour “Repeat After Me,” hosted by “The Goldbergs” star Wendi McLendon-Covey, debuts out of “Fresh Off the Boat” at 8:30 p.m.
Next on ABC was Tuesday 9-10 p.m. time period filler “Marvel’s Agent Carter” at a disappointing 2.8/ 4 (#2), which was on par from one week earlier. And freshman drama “Forever” capped off the night for the alphabet net with a third-place 3.3/ 6 at 10 p.m., which was 43 percent above failed year-ago time period occupant “Killer Women” (2.3/ 4 on 2/11/14).
Over at NBC, failing sitcom “Marry Me” is likely to get divorced with a series-low 1.7/ 3 in the household overnights in the 9 p.m. half-hour. And that led into a 1.9/ 3 (#3t) for equally disappointing – and also hiatus bound – “About a Boy” at 9:30 p.m. As a reminder, NBC sitcom “Undateable” will begin its second season on Tuesday, March 17 at 9 p.m. ET following “The Voice” and into new comedy “One Big Happy” at 9:30 p.m. ET from writer Liz Feldman and executive producer Ellen DeGeneres. And “Parks and Recreation” officially concludes with a one-hour episode on Feb. 24.
Worth positively noting for NBC’s aforementioned “Chicago Fire” at 10 p.m., meanwhile, was overnight growth of a hefty 126 percent out of “About a Boy” (4.3/ 7 vs. 1.9/ 3).
Elsewhere, “The Flash” on The CW remains the real deal at a fourth-place 2.7/ 4 from 8-9 p.m., which in the CW’s universe is a solid overnight performance. But veteran “Supernatural” dipped to a 1.4/ 2 from 9-10 p.m. (#5), which was a loss of a too significant 48 percent.
Fox capped off the night with always young adult demo friendly “MasterChef Junior” at a 3.3/ 5 from 8-9 p.m., which was eight percent below the 3.6/ 6 one week earlier. And it led into the tired combination of comedies “New Girl” (#3: 2.1/ 3), which dipped by 36 percent, and “The Mindy Project” (#3t, 1.9/ 3), which is likely to be picked-up for a fourth season because of the need for more episodes in off-network.

Oh wow SPN . Then again not too terribly surprised.
ReplyDeleteAgent Carter is steady.I dont understand how Forever can have much lower demo but bigger HH?
ReplyDeletePoI went up. I'm hopeful for a 1.6.
ReplyDeleteFOTB will be probably about 1.6-1.8.Not bad for it.
ReplyDeleteWhat did Flash get last week?
ReplyDelete2.6/
ReplyDeleteI hope if the writers ever get their arses in gear that the ratings can recover.
ReplyDeletek thanks. So it went up a little
ReplyDeleteForever has more viewers.
ReplyDeleteABC needs to switch Forever and Agent Carter until the return of AOS.
ReplyDeleteGlad for FOTB. I think it should be seeing Goodbergs S1-like numbers.
ReplyDeletePlease no. I don't want it to fall to 1.2 near the season finale.
ReplyDeleteWhy won't people watch Agent Carter? It breaks my heart ,really!
ReplyDeleteIts great considering its 3rd and 4th episode beat Selfie and MLS premieres.
ReplyDeleteLast week Arrow went down in HH and ended up at a non-crossover season high. The overnights are horrible indicators especially for the young skewing CW shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm talking its typical 1.4-1.7
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that Selfie and MLS, while both clear failures, were up against the voice, by then still in its very high rated blind auditions phase, which is very formidable competition for any comedy.
ReplyDeleteFOTB will certainly feel the impact of the voice when it arrives in two weeks so it really needs to settle at a level now that gives it enough of a buffer to fall by then.
That's not too much to ask for. Shoukd be in the mid 1s today. I believe Selfie premiered to a 1.4 and MLS a 1.1
ReplyDeleteWinners:NCIS,NCIS NO,Chicago Fire,FOTB,MasterChef Junior,The Flash
ReplyDeleteMeh:Supernatural,POI,New Girl
Losers:Marry Me,About a Boy,Agent Carter,Forever
*IF* being the word. I get we need filler EPS and everyone loves the bro love ~Weee~ but even for me that EP fell way below standard. And I'm one of the fans that defended the friggin' dog EP (s9 not s8 not going near that one with a 10 ft. Pole)
ReplyDeleteOf course the detractors will attribute to the back to basics approach :)
ReplyDeleteSince you are here, I thought I'd let you know that CBS says that season 1 of Scorpion only has 22 episodes.
ReplyDeleteGlad The Flash rose a bit. It's an important time of the year and it should keep going strong.
ReplyDeleteSeems like it is a good thing SPN will move to Wednesday.
Glad Fresh of the boat and Carter did solid. Carter deserved much better cause it was another great episode.
You're basing this purely on the HH ratings? I'd wait till the demos come out to define the winners and losers.
ReplyDelete1.4 for Carter this week please! Even if s little I need this show to rise!
ReplyDeleteI wish it was doing much better :(
Ouch SPN!!!
ReplyDeleteWhoa, I didn't expect that! The show will be airing episode 17 at the end of February, so they will only have 5 episodes for 2 1/2 months? Also, Scorpion is doing great so it would be foolish not to order any additional episodes.
ReplyDeleteLast week, people were asking me why I expected PoI to go up this week. People like to ignore hard evidence to support their opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think from now on I need to post a pic/copy and paste saying this:
PoI below 1.5 demo -> first episode back from preemption
Week after first episode -> goes up
It would be so much easier.
Overnights mean nothing for CW. 2 weeks go with 0.7 SPN was at 2.03 mil and 1.6 overnights. Last week with 1.5 overnights it was at 2.3 mil and 0.8. It was never indication of anything, at least for SPN.
ReplyDeleteSeems about right they. I wouldn't expect anything different.
ReplyDeleteThe Flash - 1.4
ReplyDeleteSupernatural - 0.8
_______________
Carter - 1.3
Forever - 1.0
_______________
New Girl - 1.3
TMP - 1.1
_______________
CF - 1.7
I'm surprised, too. They ordered an extra episode for NCIS: NO, so why not Scorpion?
ReplyDeleteI really didn't expect that. They are crazy. At the end of February Sweeps they will have aired 18 episodes, which means they will only have 4 episodes to air in the remaining 3 months of the season!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the clarification in any case Babar!
ReplyDeleteI think they will air 18 actually this month, no?
ReplyDelete17.
ReplyDelete2 episodes would be set aside for May sweeps, right? So that would mean 2 episodes in 8-9 weeks between March-April.
ReplyDeleteIt will be back up for the Dean/Cain episode next week no doubt, spoilers are indicating the next 3/4 nepisodes are getting back to be all about Dean.
ReplyDeleteAre they airing another repeat during Sweeps? I know they did it last week but I assumed it was because of the special post football episode. CBS schedule is a mess.
ReplyDeleteAs Andrew said Forever has more (older)viewers but not in the right age group!
ReplyDeleteI hope The Flash rose. Such a good episode.
ReplyDeleteThey aired too many episodes in the fall. They should have capped out at 10.
ReplyDeleteI agree, but Agent Carter is meh not loser.
ReplyDeleteI kind of understand why they did it. The show was gathering momentum and they want to cut it short. I think it was somehow justified (maybe except for the very late December episode which was even after the Christmas episode so was probably meant for January). The stupidity is not having a 25 episode season.
ReplyDeleteWhy there's so many detractors for PoI out of the blue? I never watched the show (well I don't watch any CBS show) but lately I have seen this show getting so much hate. Did it take another's show time slot or something?
ReplyDeleteOnly one? Seems right though, I believe there will be one NCIS episode leading into miniseries The Dovekeepers so otherwise there will be a NOLA episode airing without an NCIS lead-in.
ReplyDeleteI assume Madam Secretary is at 22, no extra episodes ordered?
Next week supernatural will rise
ReplyDeleteYes, I think the Dovekepers is the reason why they have one less New Orleans episode.
ReplyDeleteI think it might me something budgetary in the CBS studios.
ReplyDeletehello.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't know why they are even airing currently. They had a bunch of eps in January.
ReplyDeleteThey should've spared the next 3 eps for march.
CBS doesn't seem to regard Sweeps that highly anymore. Last week they were content in ending Mom and Intelligence earlier. Even 2 Broke Girls didn't last until the end of May Sweeps I believe, neither did the Tuesday dramas.
ReplyDeleteIts too late now, they probably have all their scripts written by now. I am surprised people think they just can re-write something on a fly because viewers didn't fall in love with previous episode.
ReplyDeleteBut of course they can work harder next year.
NCIS has 24.
ReplyDelete22 for MS, yes.
Probably but it is strange why they are able to do it for some shows but not the others .The show is a repeats machine so you would think they would want to put as many episodes in that syndication package as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteDo you know the comedies?
ReplyDeletePls SPN, don't fall below 0.8. Hello, new lower expectations :(
ReplyDeleteNot confirmed, but I think They all should be same as previous seasons.
ReplyDeleteThey been skewing older this year. So I guess they will head into the 0.7 maybe. Hope im wrong though.
ReplyDeleteCause the show's actually building a strong mythology arc, which they claim makes it hard to follow. Not to mention that this world building takes away time from the precious "save the number" stories from before, and is "not as intriguing as those". AND... a potential lack of screentime for the male leads, when there was a tally done which indicated otherwise.
ReplyDelete1.4- Flash
ReplyDelete0.7- Supernatural
It's because it is Sweeps. Besides, I kind of think it is better to air more now than against the voice later on if that is the choice they have to make.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right about that. CBS seems to be moving away from playing the 18-49 demo game. They look at 25-54 as their niche, but I think, more importantly, they're prepping for the subscription side of things where people buy live streaming, on demand, etc. so it's about the number of subscribers, not their ages.
ReplyDeleteThis might be a strange question.. but would NBC be better off not doing comedies at all any more and just do Dramas. Their comedies rate so low. Am I missing something here?
ReplyDeleteWell, their fans aren't getting any younger; they're growing older with the show. So if younger new viewers aren't arriving as fast, the show will skew a little older. I think the show is doing great for its age.
ReplyDelete*opens mouth* *realizes where I am* *shuts mouth* well at least it will pick up. The 17th EP since like what s7 for some reason has some sort of giant plot-twist to it. Along with pain. A lot of pain. So much pain. *starts building a fort of protection*
ReplyDeleteNever said they had to rewrite anything anywhere wasn't even the point????
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of number of episodes, is there any way for you to find out how many episodes of Shark Tank will there be? (Cause they already aired 18). Thanks
ReplyDeleteEvery day someone has a problem with Marc's reporting. Yes, doesn't always tell the truth about Virgins or 100 people, but he never actually lies when telling us the straight up numbers. Nevertheless, America is making our journalist be accountable for their credibility. So sorry Marc, we gotta suspend you for 6 months with no pay.
ReplyDeleteNo idea, sorry. I don't really follow reality shows, but I'll try to look it up.
ReplyDeleteugh, my poor Supernatural
ReplyDeleteMaybe the move with Arrow might help?
ReplyDeleteThe writers are indicating some huge Dean related plot twist coming up and Jensen has been filming scenes with Rowena. Rumours are the episode 'Inside Man' will be about Dean trying to dupe Rowena or something? The only spoiler I've heard aboutany other character not named Dean is that Sam will leave Dean towards the end of the season and go off on his own to save Dean. I guess by then he wont have a choice either Dean will have gone 'dark' or Sam cant trust Dean to have his back and actually do something to get rid of the MOC which after last nights defeatest attitude I see that being a possibility. I hope to see Sam start to go off on his own more as the season draws to a close and more next season as it would allow both brothers to have a storyline and allow for the actors to have time off.
ReplyDeletehow would it help it?
ReplyDeleteI dont know you never know if SPN/Arrow share more audience then Flash/SPN.
ReplyDeleteprobably why they've been trying to give the show a more teen feel, with more teen actors, TeenDean, pop music, Dean behaving more like a teenager at times. They're trying to appeal to a younger audience.
ReplyDeleteBTW I have noticed that Dean fans while many seem t be esither really young or really old, the heavy Dean centric episodes (though nearly all the episodes under Carver have been Dean centric)/the ones that look like they're going to be all about Dean go up in viewers but not in demo. Cas episodes seem to bring back more of the demo though.
I don't have a problem with Marc's reporting facts. I have a problem with his passive aggressive insults towards shows HE deems unworthy. He's an alleged journalist/editor who writes more like a fanboy with numbers. He can either be a critic or he can be an editor. He shouldn't try to combine the two when it only makes his petty behavior more obvious.
ReplyDeleteAlso, comparing Berman's childish commentary to Williams lying about an act of terror? Not really cool.
i think the min poi got a little more serialised show.ppl started disliking it. but imo this season is the best so far.
ReplyDeleteReally hope SPN is low and that it stays low even next week, the writers need a good kick up the arse. This season has been worse than season 7 which is highly regarded as the worst of the series. The Carver years are getting progressively worse.
ReplyDeletespn is filler...filler and filler
ReplyDelete..and SPN VS empire
ReplyDeleteGiven that they cant have 23 episodes of mytharc basically because Jensen Ackles doesnt want to work that much, filler is about their only option unless they agree wot shorten the season. I would love for them to announce next season as either the last of that they're going to cut the seasons to 12 episodes. We may get tighter writing then and every episode could be Dean/Cas/Crowley.
ReplyDeleteThe Flash - 1.4
ReplyDeleteSPN- .8
FOREVER 1.1
