Am I the only one that hates the Prinsess Ragnar is helping? I hope something bad happends to her soon. I hope they don´t set Ragnar up with her. Besides that, great episode!!
Oh so sad about Torsten. But why kill him off, he was a good 'bodyguard' for Ragner. He was the only one who had unfailing loyalty to Ragner. Everybody else talks back to Ragner. Its sad.
i agree it seems the Wessex princess has her eyes set on Ragner. We will see how that plays out since she is insatiable.
What I can't believe is that this group of experienced fighting men and women don't bring along dedicated healers who don't fight. I had the same issue when last year they waited until they got back home to see to Rollo's serious injuries.
I think it has to do with the the Vikings way of thinking, if the highest accomplishment you could hope to achive in this world is a death in battle, would you really bring along healers to prevent your warriors from reaching that glorious afterlife in Valhalla.
Another excellent episode, things took a turn for the darker and more mystical tonight. I love that they're keeping the language barrier and having the Vikings actually speak in Old Norse while the Saxons speak Old English when they talk to each other. (kudos to the actors for learning those lines)
This seems really bad but I didn't believe what Princess Kwenthrift said. It just sounded so dramatic. And why did she want to save her brother wasn't he also part of the abuse? She didn't mention that this brother was the only one who didn't rape her. We know that she had already killed her other brother for this reason. I would have preferred a different reason for her wanting to gain power. The sexual abuse card seems trite and the scene where she stabbed the severed head just made her seem mad. FYI I am female.
Don't you think that it is unbelievable that Lagertha can't speak Old English? Athelstan lived with her family for several years before she left. Are you telling me that Ragnar was the only one who learnt the language.
Yes, Ragnar was the only one with the foresight to know that learning Old Engish would be usefull. That was the reason he asked to keep Athelstan from Earl Haraldson, he wanted to know about the culture and the language.
And Lagertha left Ragnar before the time jumps of 4 years, it had at most been a year since Ragnar brought Athelstan to live with them. Most of the time Lagertha was pregnant or busy with actually ruling the village, she had no time or interest to learn Old English.
Your response makes me think less of Lagertha. As I think of her to be as intelligent as Ragnar. And this situation didn't seem as bad when they didn't show this language barrier last year. Hadn't they been preparing for a year to go to England? Wouldn't it be one of the basic things that you would do as well as collecting supplies and people to learn the language of the people you are going to live amongst?
You're thinking with modern sensibilities and view of the world. I don't think the Spanish or the English settlers bothered to learn the language of the Native American at first before going to America?
Also I know it's not very noticable unless you look up the actual history bits. But Lagertha and Ragnar's territories are quite a bit of distance from each other. Hedeby (Lagertha's territory) was a settlement in what is today northern Germany, while Kategat is the name for the body of water between the northern part of Denmark and the coasts of Norway and Sweden. Athelstan is with Ragnar and Lagertha might not have 24 hour access to him as a teacher even if she wanted to learn.
That seems to be a theme of our conversation this evening. I have to think that it is also just for the purpose of the script. Thanks for the geography lesson. I just assumed Lagertha was a ruler of another area in the same country.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

I did not get the end. Awesome episode though.

ReplyDeleteI figured she was trying to decive him, had he belived her and stayed he would have been slaughterd by Ragnar and his men just like the uncle was.

ReplyDeleteI suppose. I am just disappointed that she didn't have a good reason to want power for herself.

Yes if it involves waiting for several days in agony to die from infections and the best you can do for them is feed them magic mushrooms.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't know what infection was, if you died it was something that had been decided by the gods.

I refuse to believe this. They knew enough to heat the axe before they used it.
ReplyDeleteThat wasn't to sterilize, that was to cauterize. to burn the wound to stop the blood flow.
ReplyDeleteMmmm I begrudgingly accept that point. But I am not satisfied.

That is so true. Its like they don't even the basics of keeping a wound clean, etc
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure they depicted the language barrier in both season 1 and 2.
