  1. Looking forward to hearing all your thoughts on the episode, it's one that I enjoyed. I think that Catherine is a bit of an interesting character. My gut feeling is that she didn't like being passed over to Thomas - she wanted the title and nobility that came with marriage to the Comte himself - so her bitterness had something to do with what transpired between Thomas and Milady. Her being there to see what happened was far to convenient otherwise I think.

Loved all the interaction between the lads this episode, the pairing off of Aramis/Porthos and d'Artagnan/Athos is always awesome ;) And the brotherhood as a whole came across more in this episode than in the others so far imo. Also liked the Treville/Porthos stuff this week, it's building nicely. I like that it included that Porthos still had his back in combat, even though they are having their difficulties, that was a nice touch :)

Paul Englishby's music once again completely rocked!!

  2. Not the most exciting or interesting of premises but that was off-set by all the lovely character moments, whether between Aramis & Porthos, d'Artagnan & Athos, Athos's flashbacks of Milady, the Musketeers teaching the villiagers to fight and the moments of tension between Treville and Porthos..

I didn't warm to Catherine that much but I found her interesting in the end and I wonder if she's going after Milady?

  3. Wow. Absolutely frikkin' brilliant! Loved it. :D

I'll have to watch it again (starting in about 2 minutes) to gather all my thoughts but.....

I have to call it. Our newest official couple D'Arthos are just too adorable together. ;)

The music, I agree Sandi, was wonderful. The sound overall was fantastic, especially the echoes of the house when Athos goes inside was so atmospheric. Also the music over the Athos/Milady scene in the field was almost heartbreaking.

Tom Burke is just superb. I think the Burketeers will be fanning themselves and running for a cold shower after all that. ;) This was definitely his best episode so far, and he really does deserve every accolade for this performance.

Treville and Porthos are a worry, and I'm concerned about Treville's apparent plans to leave in next week's trailer.

Could Catherine be a part of the finale? She's clearly off to cause panic at the Palace but even with her wicked gun skills she's out of her league facing Milady and Rochefort. Rochefort is just, well, nuts, and she's no idea what skills Milady's picked up since they last met, not to mention her obvious protector in Louis. An interesting direction. Girl fight!

Brilliant fight scenes, great banter and first class writing. Add to that my beautiful Gascon farmboy being, well, him, and I can't recommend this ep enough.:D

Oh, and lovely to hear them say 'IT'S ON NEXT WEEK!'

  4. Very intrigued by this Catherine character - I fear we may not have seen the last of her. It looks like she is going to take her revenge on Milady. I just hope that she doesn't succeed. However, I agree that it was all too convenient that she was there when Thomas was killed and I now truly believe that it was self-defence and not murder. Also, wonder what involvement she had. Not a very likeable character at all!

  5. I loved the D'Arthos moments - as well as Aramis & Porthos working together, finally - and I still wonder if that growing friendship will play a role towards the series final?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yeah, I'm begining to wonder if Milady was innocent after all? If she is, I think Adrian Hodges WILL give her that redemption but I wonder if it will come at the cost of her life or some other penalty.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Totally with you on that one - I think Milady is innocent. However, I have a nasty feeling that Athos will find this out when it's too late. It does look like redemption is coming her way!

    ReplyDelete
  8. How I loved this episode, let me count the ways! I'd no idea how much I'd missed seeing the boys fighting together and the prominent addition of the wonderful Treville, just made it perfection. The writing was great and the performances were some of the best of either series. Once again, a guest star stole the honours. Marianne Oldham was simply brilliant. It seems that Milady may have met with a kindred spirit in her. So intriguing. Clearly we're destined to see her again and Milady should probably star worrying now. Some beautiful character moment, particularly between D'Artagnan and Athos and between Porthos and Treville. He wouldn't take his hand, it's bad people, it's VERY bad. The whole western feel, whilst perhaps a little over played, worked beautifully and so was easily forgiven. I didn't have high hopes for this one but it's up there now as one of my favourites of the series. As for the trailer for episode six, OMG! I don't think I'll look forward to a Friday more this year. I have a feeling that when I get my series two DVD, episodes five and six will be watched to death. Well worth the wait.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If it's true, I can't see her surviving past this series. Either she's guilty and the merry-go-round of pain between her and Athos will just go on and on, and if she's innocent and Athos finds out, then what? They can't get back together, not after everything she's done, so where would the go from there? There has to be a resolution to their story, once and for all, and the end of S2, and I agree it could well be a redemption and death ending.

    ReplyDelete
  10. That trailer for next week was awesome! Those creepy plague masks are going to give me nightmares! So, looking forward to next Friday - bring it on! :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. Interesting to have Porthos and Rochefort having to work together. They're not a pairing that have had to encounter each other much, as yet.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ..and Helen, she's taking his arm. I mean seriously could he look more happy. Gorgeousness.

    ReplyDelete
  13. That's very true - yes, I was surprised when he said the quote to Rochefort.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I know, I couldn't believe it!!! I am going to be watching that promo over and over again just to see that! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Clearly Rochefort hasn't invited his favourite suit-maker to the eclipse. :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. I wasn't expecting that Constagnan moment in the trailer. :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. It was a delicious little treat wasn't it.:)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh yes how adorable did he look with her beside him. The next episode looks incredible I really cant wait to watch it!

    ReplyDelete
  19. D'Arthos - Love that name! ;) They were superb together!

    ReplyDelete
  20. We really need a side-room in here so we can happysigh over Constagnan without everyone else wanting to smack us. LOL :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Seriously brightened my week! I'll be walking with a spring in my step knowing we'll have a few scenes with the two together :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'm with you on this. I've long wondered if it might just be possible that Milady was telling the truth about what happened with her brother-in-law. If nothing else, I love that we're now being forced to question this and to see Milady as the much more complex character she is, rather than a straightforward, clichéd villian.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think they deserved a name after tonight! I hate the word 'bromance' but in this case it really is. Their friendship is developing so wonderfully and I'm really glad because Porthos and Aramis (what's their couple name?!) are really close and Athos has needed a similar partnership for a long time, while D'Artagnan has found someone he desperately needed after the void left by his father. Who knows where he'd have ended up had he not met the Musketeers and gone his own way after his father's death. Would he have returned to Gascony or found work as a hired sword in Paris? Either way that closeness with Athos has really helped keep him on a steady path he could easily have missed.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We know that Marianne Oldham was back for a few days towards the very end of the filming process, I can't wait to see what happens there! Her character is so bitter, and she's very quick to temper, so I can well believe that she beguiled Thomas into believing Milady would be up for it perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Porthamis I guess? Lol. Yeah, I do love the two pairing offs that they have in the foursome, it works well with both the characters and actors chemistry imo. It's what I have been missing this season so far, even though I have enjoyed the court stuff too. If it wasn't for the breaks between episodes I think it might have been a little less frustrating getting to this point for the fans, it just feels like it's taken FOREVER for this episode to air....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Omigoodness where to begin? That episode was amazing!! The brotherhood is back thank god! The moments between athos and dartagnan were so lovely I had to stop myself squealing quite a few times! The fight scenes, camera work, acting it was all incredible. Those flashback scenes were so beautiful and heartbreaking and raw (not to mention maimie looked gorgeous too!) Sassy dartagnan! I kept looking at him throughout the episode and his facial expressions the whole way through are absolutely hilarious especially when catherine asked if he was a musketeer...priceless. His face when athos said he didnt know him really got to me though because you could tell how fond he's grown of him. Another powerful scene was the near assault of that girl they had kidnapped (sorry ive forgotten her name already!) The rallying and chanting beforehand was chilling and I have to say I cheered when porthos and aramis came to the rescue. This has been a really long rant but I just cant not mention that next time promo...how exciting!!?? It looks incredible and I know this will probably cause a few eye rolls but can we just discuss the constagnan moment?! Linking arms??? So cute im am so excited for that! :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Treville/Porthos stuff really moved on well in this episode I feel, I liked that Porthos had his back when needed and still sees him as the Captain, but wants those answers from him!

    ReplyDelete
  28. It doesn't quite fit right that scene with Milady, Thomas and Catherine. Why was Catherine there? I'm definitely thinking that she set Milady (and Thomas) up, so that Milady killed Thomas and Catherine would then be free to marry Athos.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Porthamis it is. :P I didn't miss the court scenes at all, to be honest, and this ep really reminded me how much I love just having the boys working together without all the politics in Paris.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It kinda feels that way to me too, so glad I can finally talk to someone about my suspicions here tbh, been dying to for ages, lol! The way she reacted to thinking that Athos was giving the land to just her rather than everyone in the present day also kind of backs up the theory I think. As was her dress - she mentioned it being what people were wearing in Paris, the height of fashion. She is dying to be a noble and lord it over others imo.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The way she called him to say Milady had killed Thomas seemed a bit...I dunno...scripted. It didn't sound to me like the words or voice of someone in shock or fear. For a woman who's intended has just been stabbed to death by her sister in law her behaviour was a little unbothered

Just throwin' it out there, but might her and Milady have been working together or had some other interaction we've not had hinted at yet?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Athos is so naive that I wouldn't be at all surprised if Milady was telling more or less the truth. He wouldn't even listen to her side of the tale by the looks of it in the flashback we saw tonight, just took Catherine's word for it I think?

    ReplyDelete
  33. It was lovely to see the return of the four boys just being together without any court characters getting in the way.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Fortunately I live on my own, so I could squeal to my little heart's content. :P

    ReplyDelete
  35. That's true about her outfit and the dress - it was interesting when Bertrand's daughter said something like she had been lording over them. She wanted the land and would do anything for it!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Exactly, she'd been betrothed to Athos since they were children, so it had become something she grew up expecting her whole life. To have Milady come swanning in and take it all away must have been too much for her I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  37. At first, I was thinking that perhaps it was Catherine who murdered Thomas and that Milady just covered up for her by saying he forced her. However, I'm thinking now that perhaps you're right and that they were working together.

    ReplyDelete
  38. It's going to hit Athos hard if he finds out that Milady has been innocent all along. As Milady said, they won't have any peace until they are both dead.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Portamis, everywhere that I've seen. Not that I, *ahem*, have any inclinations that way. 0;-)

    ReplyDelete
  40. LMAO Someone on twitter has just referred to the boys' exchanges as #Muskebanter. We have to steal that one!

    ReplyDelete
  41. in kinda like milady and athos. He truly love her.

    ReplyDelete
  42. That really is going to be an interesting combination. This Marmion certainly seems to have a thing about tethering people together. Maybe he's just hoping to have a giant three legged race. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. The biggest problem is all she has done to survive since, even if she was totally innocent back then (which I don't believe, even if she was forced to kill Thomas I think she was probably only trying to turn over a new leaf with Athos, like she was with the king) she has done some terrible things since. I don't think that full redemption is ever possible for her. I also think that if what we are suspecting here is true, and Athos finds out about it, it will only cause him even more emotional baggage tbh.

He should have listened to her back then and he'll never forgive himself for not having done so. If she now dies too, I fear that he will only sink lower. That could be the way they want to go of course, lol. I'd like to see him get over it in some small way though.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm always pretty fixated with Luke Pasqualino's face to be honest. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Enjoyed it immensely - best one of the series so far because: all the main characters had time to shine, the Porthos/Treville story has made more of an impact on the viewer this episode than the previous rather too subtle attempts, Athos/D'artagnan - a true closeness the way the books portrayed their relationship and ho, ho, ho....more to come from the rather vindictive Catherine. I am sure she knew more about Thomas/Milady and it is clear she wanted Athos as she made plain when he put the necklace around her neck. We will be seeing her again i am sure.

I loved the way she was not killed off and not given Athos' land outright. Her and Milady...bring it on!

Tom Burke is just brilliant, even in an episode based around his character it is as much about what he doesn't say as what he does - everything acts: his body movement, facial expressions and his eyes.

Liked being away from the palace and even though the storyline has been done many times before it was the perfect vehicle to bring the guys together minus their Paris distractions.

    Great.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ha, I'm sure ;) Sounds good to me :))

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well isn't Athos a rose between two thorns...

    ReplyDelete
  48. Yeah, I'm sensing that we may have to build our own little barricade to fend off those smacks next week! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think he has been well and truly burned since Thomas died because of it, and won't allow himself to acknowledge his true feelings, or those who feel for him - hence his you don't really know me to d'Artagnan, when really he's like an open book to read and understand, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Tom is fab, a wonderful actor in the perfect role for him I feel :)

I like how the Treville/Porthos story has been building, I think it shows the frustration that Porthos feels about it is growing and the reluctance/guilt that Treville has about the situation well.

    ReplyDelete
  51. We'll definitely need that side-room after next week's episode - this is the result of them just linking arms! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Lol yes, if only he understood women, and their motivations, a little better...

    ReplyDelete
  53. I wonder whether there is any logic from Marmion in who he has tethered together or if it is just fate/chance!

    ReplyDelete
  54. No comment. #WeNeedThatSideRoomNOW

    :P

    ReplyDelete
  55. I would also like Athos to find some peace because i cannot believe the writers will continue this storyline into a 3rd series, which could mean the end for Milady, because it won't be Athos who dies.

When she called that she loved him before she was taken away i felt that was genuine from her. No doubting she had a past to hide but it is clear she truly believed the past could be forgotten and she could start a fresh with him.

He certainly wishes he had at least listened to her before hanging her that is now becoming clear. My one wish from the episode is that they showed a scene whereby the two of them thrashed out the incident before he made his decision - i can't believe, a man who so obviously loved her, would just have her draggged off without some kind of verbal confrontation.

    ReplyDelete
  56. The flashbacks when they were in the field were absolutely gorgeous. Totally loved Englishby's music during those flashback scenes - they were perfection!

    ReplyDelete
  57. if we start building it now we might just be ready in time for Friday...

    ReplyDelete
  58. He does tend to see things in black and white does our Athos, people are either good or bad, right or wrong. There's his brother's dead body on the floor while she has a knife in her hand, and his widow, who is also his life long friend, saying she saw the whole thing. I guess Catherine also found out some of Milady's background and used that against her too. I have a feeling we may see more of the scene when Catherine returns in the finale, or at least I hope that we do.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I can't even begin to wrap my head around that image....

    ReplyDelete
  60. It's that boyish, playful side that she brings out in him that I love. It also looks as though Constance's perception of danger is spot on once again. They really should take her on all there missions. With her instincts, she'd be like a Sat Nav for disaster. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. You're right, if Milady was innocent over killing Thomas, then Athos will never find peace if she dies. We will then be left with a drunk and miserable Athos for all of season 3 - back where he started at the beginning of series 1. I'm still hoping that the writers will find some way to keep Milady around for season 3 whilst resolving this story, although it's not looking good at the moment!

    ReplyDelete
  62. A bit of a whodunnit!!

i dont go along with the two women in it together - what would Milady have gained by killing his brother and then having Catherine on the loose after her husband!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'd see Louis as more of an egg and spoon man. :)

    ReplyDelete
  64. Yes he was happy but later he lost Milady and Thomas . Will we get milady side flashback about Thomas death

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yep totally agree - if we only return to the palace in small segments that would be great for me.

    ReplyDelete
  66. She doesn't look best pleased when there sitting around that table waiting for the eclipse to happen. She's sitting next to Marguerite who looks escatic but Constance has this really worried look on her face.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I suspect Catherine hated Milady as soon as she was brought back to the house. I can't imagine her working together with Milady on anything, she seems far too bitter towards her for stealing what she saw as rightfully hers imo. My guess is she probably found out some dirt on her past, beguiled Thomas into making a move - possibly not even realising that Milady would kill him, just that she would call Athos and show him they were cheating on him perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  68. She was probably hoping when she saw that big table that they be paying Spin the Bottle...:)

    ReplyDelete
  69. Maybe not a full redemption, but perhaps taking heroic actions that can't be misinterpreted by Athos or the others as self-serving, where she's genuinely doing something at her own risk to save him or another innocent. If the whole truth was told at the end like, as she's dying in his arms, maybe - and they made peace with each other for what they've done, even if it's less about forgiveness than understanding, I think her dying may not be a total back-slide for Athos. To know the truth and for them to have the chance to say what needs to be said, could bring closure of a kind.

    ReplyDelete
  70. That scene may yet be coming. If he didn't listen to her protestations then, he may have to soon, and that could be the big 'moment' between them when things come to a head.

    ReplyDelete
  71. As was said in another thread, when a strange man who travels with hooded, beak-faced associates invites you to see his 'impressive observatory', any sensible person would say 'uh, maybe not, ta'. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  72. I would definitely like them to put their problems aside and have it out properly, there's a lot of bullheadedness in both of them though. I think it could take someone like d'Artagnan to get them to sort it out with each other perhaps if he were to find out the truth. I really wouldn't like her to die though. I'd rather Rochefort did of the baddies and we kept her as a morally grey character so we don't start completely afresh in S3. We'll be having an even longer set up of baddies otherwise, after seeing how they went about it this year :s lol

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yeah, admittedly that was never going to end well was it?....:)

    ReplyDelete
  74. It would be a cool way to go, if D'Artagnan were put in the middle and had to sit them around a table for some much needed marriage guidance counselling! He's ironically the one who's been closest to both, and with his capacity for forgiveness I think if he learned more about what transpired in Pinon he may be willing to mediate, even with Milady and what she's done (especially regarding Constance).

    ReplyDelete
  75. What could possibly go wrong?!

    ReplyDelete
  76. What if she got Louis though? "Sure, you threatened to hang me, but fancy a snog?" Perhaps not. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  77. Who'd win the sack race?

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yes the dying in his arms bit could be the finale for them. I just have one request before that possibly occurs: could they get together, so to speak, just one more time, without soft focus in realtime on screen because although this series was supposed to contain more sex etc. it hasn't and i think they might as well go for it just once....for old times sake!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Her hatred probably did start as soon as Athos brought Catherine home. I imagine that even then she was thinking of a way to get both Thomas and Milady out of the picture. You could be right - possibly she didn't realise that Milady would kill Thomas and that Athos would see them and think they were having an affair. Milady then totally spoilt the plan, as it resulted in Thomas dead and Athos leaving the estate. I've got so many crazy speculations going round my head with this! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  80. "There's nothing to be scared of."
"You're right. We're in a strange, isolated fort awaiting a solar eclipse with a coin tossing weirdo and a bunch of dodgy blokes in black cloaks wearing bird masks. On the plus side, all this freakiness is making me frisky. You look seriously hot gorgeous. Wanna play friends with benefits?"

    ReplyDelete
  81. We'll based on whose had the most experience in the sack, I'd say Aramis but if we're going on endurance and stamina, D'Artagnan's sure to perform well on the day.;) :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. *splutters* SIDEROOM! SIDEROOM! :P

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'm actually starting to think the cheating line is more probable now, I doubt she planed for Thomas to get killed at all, it just went further than she imagined probably. I'm glad I'm not the only person who suspects this, I was wondering if I was seeing stuff that wasn't there lol. I wasn't Milady's greatest fan in S1 I must admit, and even though I have warmed to her this year I didn't for one moment think she had been telling the complete truth until this episode.

    ReplyDelete
  84. If they do a little lip lockin, there'll be a collective thud as we all pass out.:)

    ReplyDelete
  85. That's an interesting question. I'd wondered that myself. I suppose it will depend on how perceptive he is. If this is about people making difficult/impossible choices, there may well be some method in his madness. There has to be jeopardy and a sense of heads you win and tails you lose, big.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I've just rewatched the 'Thomas is dead' scene. I'm not sure what to make of it in light of the discussion further down about whether it was self-defence or murder. There's a moment when Milady turns and walks away from his body, and the look on her face seems to be the usual calculating Milady, just for a second. Anyone else see that, as she steps through the shaft of light? It's really quick so you'd have to pause, but I'm not sure if I'm just imagining it.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Loved it, my favorite episode of the season and I completely agree about Catherine. I think she might have had a lot to do with what transpired between Thomas and Anne and in the end she ruined every ones life

    ReplyDelete
  88. Not sure it will be her life, but I do not think her and Athos will ever get back what they lost.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Maybe it is just my wishful thinking because I love Mamie as Milady but do not think the only route they have with her is death. I agree she is not totally innocent even if she was in that one instant with Thomas. There is to much that has happened on both of their ends for them to ever get back together even if Athos found out the truth. I think there is a lot of story, at least for one more season even if she is not killed off. They can always have them ride off into the sunset in the final season if that is next year. It is not like they are following the book.....I mean Athos gives up his title , something that never happens in Dumas's version.

    ReplyDelete
  90. He was nobility, the minute he found out who she was, he was done listening to her no matter how much he loved her. He has changed now but back then, I am not surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I agree, I go back to Mamie saying that we are all going to feel sorry for her by the time the season is over.

    ReplyDelete
  92. That is exactly what I think...it has sort of been my head cannon since end of last season...not the Catherine part but it is pretty much turning out like I thought......I have watched to many serial Dramas in my many years on this earth......:)

    ReplyDelete
  93. I was conflicted on if she was telling the truth but she has been making me believe her more and more since viewing episode 10 again and then this season.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I think they can resolve the story without having to get them together....I have seen it done multiple times on multiple shows...if it is what TPTB want.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think if she dies it would be the worst thing for Athos. If they do not want to use her in season 3 then Anne and Athos clear the air and she goes off never to be seen again, but alive. He will never get over her dying if he realized what happened IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I completely agree.

    ReplyDelete
  97. He was an idiot and just for that alone deserves to not have a wife:)

    ReplyDelete
  98. I did not know that, I am very interested to see where they go with this story. Maybe Milady finally figures out what happened ...she has it out with Catherine, ends up killing her and Athos once again believes her to be the guilty one coming in the tale end and finding Catherine dead. This keeps Mamie around as Milady, but keeps her and Athos apart but is heart breaking for Anne because she realizes why her life was ruined all those years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I do not think they were working together, I think that Catherine was of noble birth and Milady of low birth but Catherine was they one who should not have been trusted but because of her noble birth she got away with everything. Even at the end of the episode tonight, nobody went after her...if it has been Anne she would have been arrested.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Now that could be interesting if Catherine joined Rochfort in the season finally as the black hats

    ReplyDelete
  101. If being an idiot means a man deserves to not have a wife, there would be a vanishingly small number of men getting married...

    ReplyDelete
  102. I'm not convinced as others are that Milady dying would destroy Athos. I really don't think it would, as long as she died with both of them having had the chance to finally be honest about their actions that day and since. Understanding something goes a long way towards someone's emotional recovery, and if Athos finally knew the truth, about both her actions and how is own got him where he is now, it would give him the beginnings of space in his mind to reconcile the past. If she died - or just left - without that conversation, THEN I agree his inner turmoil over her would continue,

    ReplyDelete
  103. I don't think his actions towards her were anything to do with her not being nobility. Even then, I don't think that was a motivating factor in his behaviour towards people. He may have changed in many ways since those times, but I wouldn't have thought something as shallow as that would be in his make-up in the first place.

  104. I watched it twice and did not see it but I am sure TPTB want to make it at least a little ambiguous

    ReplyDelete
  105. He can barely understand the other Musketeers:)

  106. this was a great episode for Athos and I love Tom doing angst on screen

    ReplyDelete
  107. That is why he has not been able to get over her all these years.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I guess not for me.
I would hate to see Milady go and I can not see the Athos I have seen on screen just get over it
But then again the world is made of different opinions.
To tell you the truth this episode and the banter at this site is just what I needed after a sad work week.

    ReplyDelete
  109. It is just a show do not take me seriously

    ReplyDelete
  110. I definitely noticed the music a lot in the episode - probably the most of any episode of the season. It is fabulous - I love that there are specific recurring themes, reminds me of Lord of the Rings.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I LOVED how the d'Artagnan/Athos interactions in this episode reflected the ones from Commodities and showed how much their relationship has grown. I hope it was deliberate on the storytellers' part.
In Commodities d'Artagnan is clearly concerned about Athos but is pretty much rebuffed when he tries to talk to Athos - Athos walks away several times, with the portraits and again at the tree. He tells d'Artagnan to leave him alone, which d'Artagnan does, though he does come back for him later when the house is burning. It shows their relationship at this point - d'Artagnan clearly cares about Athos and looks up to him, but Athos has a lot of walls that he is keeping up and is reluctant to talk or accept his concern or comfort . There is clearly a foundation of trust there but it is still fairly new.
Contrast that with episode (and the scene in the tavern from the last one). At the tavern Athos essentially asks d'Artagnan to stay with him. In this episode d'Artagnan is more willing to push Athos in regards to his duties and protests much more strongly when Athos leaves. Athos takes him to his house and volunteers information about his family. When d'Artagnan is concerned and offers comfort in the vault Athos allows and accepts it. You can see how close they have gotten and how d'Artagnan seems to know when and how to talk and to offer support and have Athos accept it and appreciate it.
I think it was a great way to show the two characters' relationship in a way that felt organic to the series - it showed you so much about them without having to tell you a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Agreed. They've both learned how to be around one another, they way real brothers normally would, knowing how far to push and when to back off. It's been great to see the development of that. It's how Aramis and Porthos are with each other.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I really did enjoy both Athos and D'Art in this episode and the return
of the Aramis I loved in season 1.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Amazing.... simply wonderful. Took me to all the action, humor and Bromance we got so used to in season 1. I loved the interaction between the boys and the captain (ohhh God sexy Hugo !!!) . No baby mooning, no King Louis bitchiness, no Rochefort. Just plain and pure action packed episode.
The humor is back..."centuries of inbreeding made Aristocracy ..clap clap Stupid"... Dartagnag kicking the table and the fight... OMG the fight!!!! All the boys kicking ass everywere.... and Treville shouting orders (he was sooo sexy being so bosy)
    Great great episode.
And the advance!!!! My baby Aramis falling from a window (a word to the producers: by no means you are to harm Santiago Cabrera or else) I cannot wait to see it

  115. I think that this episode was my favourite episode of The Musketeers to date. I love that it was back to what the show should be about: The Musketeers. Although I have enjoyed this season thoroughly, the side characters seem to be the main focus this year, with little attention being paid to the four main men and the relationship between them. That is why I personally found this episode so refreshing. The main focus was on Athos' background, his emotional state and the side story (whilst interesting) remained that - the side story.

My favourite scene was the moment of bonding between Athos and d'Artagnan in the weapons cache. I think that was the first genuine smile that we have seen from Athos, and to then openly express the pain and sorrow that he was enduring as a result of being back at La Fere as well as allowing d'Artagnan to comfort him was truly heart-warming and excellent character development.

As well as Athos and d'Artagnan, Porthos and Aramis bonded more in this episode than they have all season. I believe this is because instead of keeping their troubles secret (like Aramis and the dauphin), Porthos was completely honest with Aramis about his concerns over (former) Captain Treville and his past. It was a nice change to see them being honest to one another for once.

I believe that is one of the reasons for Aramis' change in mood for this episode. At last he almost seemed back to his old self, joking with d'Artagnan and being attentive to Porthos' emotional state, instead of brooding over the queen and the dauphin.

It will be interesting to see how their current emotional states change from this episode to the next. It is possible that all they will revert to their usual brooding selves with Athos being forced to accompany Milady de Winter, Aramis will be in the company of the queen and the dauphin, d'Artagnan will be concerned for the safety of Constance and Porthos will be stuck with Rochefort as well as still trying to get information from Treville.

I think this is why this episode was needed, a happier episode before the oncoming onslaught of angst. Having said that, I am looking forward to the upcoming episodes and hopefully the resolving of some of the more troubling storylines (like Aramis keeping secrets from Porthos).

  116. Just got through reading all of your comments I don't get to watch this episode until tonight but I can't wait! You all have me very excited to see it!! Can I just say I love this place. Such interesting and intelligent conversation about the show with just the right amount of squealing and gushing over hot musketeers lol! It was a very trying day and I thoroughly enjoyed coming here getting spoiled and reading your comments...you made me smile. 😊

    ReplyDelete
  117. Yeah, mum mentioned again last night how handsome d'Artagnan is and called Athos an idiot for still not getting over Milady yet - he remains her favourite Musketeer though and she really enjoyed seeing him pull himself together during the final 15-20 minutes.
I got the impression that she enjoyed episode 5 more than episodes 3 and 4 because of how much she talked about it, probably because the Musketeers themselves were having more meaningful time together. It looks like she's another viewer who's been missing the banter since the series started.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I just hope the remaining 5 episodes don't slip back into too much baby, too much king, too much Rochefort and little 4 some together.

I have to say that i like the fact that Treville has a bigger part this year, of all the growth in screen time of other characters, Treville is the one and only i approve of. Find the wordy scenes in the palace boring.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I loved the episode very much, although I (often) question the walk-ons. Why do the all look like idiots and behave likewise? Duh! That said, I'm about to slap Athos in the face and tell him to stop feeling so damn sorry for himself! If I could, I'd go up there, rattle him till his teeth hurt and then tell him to wake up. Wallowing in self-pity holds its charm for only so long.
Nah... I'll take Porthos, Aramis and young d'A any time if he's like that. They're fiesty, they're up and ready! Yippeee. I loved the bromance that was back - finally -! and I didn't miss the royal affairs one bit. d'A trying to comfort Athos was wonderful, Aramis being his usual witty and funny self (part about the inbreed, whahahaha lol) and Porthos just being Porthos: straight and to the point.
So, what's going to happen with Catherine? Going after Milady? How will that work out? Is that the dramatic consequence that was spoken off earlier?
Yup, great episode. Eagerly awaiting next week. What? My lovely Aramis smashing backwards through a window? O boy...

    ReplyDelete
  120. The entire episode was so very good that I am afraid to find out what scenes the BBCA cuts out....That said you will enjoy it. It has to be one of my all time favorite episodes on both seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  121. I love that D'Artagnan can get a smile out of him. It's so hard to do, it really shows how close they've become.

    ReplyDelete
  122. i bet milady is not fan of Catherine. If milady and Catherine meet will be very interesting. I felt sorry for milady when athos not help her. She felt betrayed by athos, like athos felt betrayed by her.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Best episode of Season 2 so far! Action packed and the humour is back! Epic performance from Tom - what a versatile actor!! Really believed his angst but a wry smile too to lighten the moment. Starting to see the close relationship between him and D'artagnan really evolve now. Can't wait for the next episode, watch out Milady! And Treville - his finest moment to date!

    ReplyDelete
  124. Catherine can expose Milady's past in a way nobody but Athos, until now, has been able to. She'll be a massive threat to Milady's whole existence at the palace because she probably knows the complete truth about what happened to Thomas, where Athos might not. I don't think we know enough of Catherine yet to tell whether marching into the palace and just killing her is the plan, or if she's got a more subtle plan in mind, exposing her (along with Athos) to the King and destroying her in that way and THEN killing her. Could go either way.

    ReplyDelete
  125. I certainly lied to Athos about her history, and I don't think she didn't kill Thomas, but more more I'm starting to think she may have been set up and trapped with blackmail...

    ReplyDelete
  126. I'm really pleased Treville is getting more attention this year too, and judging by the fan reaction it's been a much appreciated move to finally give him a storyline. Hugo's a great actor and was sadly wasted in S1.

    ReplyDelete
  127. i really like to see milady in season 3. I think Catherine can go visit Athos.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Again the show fell into the "I liked it but didn't love it" category for me...

I appreciated that we stepped away from Paris. I was starting to get tired of Louie's fits and Rochefort's creepyness. So the break from those two was rather welcome.

And I have to say the guest stars to fill those abesences were more than adequate. Jean and her father, and Catherine in particular were excellent additions.

I'm here for the Athos angst. Tom plays it exceptionally well.
And it makes me enjoy the D'Artangan/Athos bromance all the more, because those just balance each other out wonderfully.
Also nice to see some flashbacks. Now I do think Milady lied to Athos about her past, and I do think she did kill his brother, but I've always thought her to be a victim of those circumstances (what she's done since then though, I can't defend her over any of that). After seeing those flashbacks though, I'm starting to think that maybe her being a victim of circumstances wasn't accidental. I get a feeling Catherine may have actually set her up... we'll see...

Again, I'm sad to say, I'm zero invested in the Porthos storyline... That he was acting like a little bitch to Treville over it didn't win me over. That Treville was acting a bit of a jerk about it too, didn't help...

Not enough Aramis IMO, but he was awesome none the less!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Slightly left field, but does anybody know why the BBC chose to pretty much hang the programme out to dry this series? Considering their total lack of interest in advertising it and their bizarre decision to put it out on a Friday night, Series 3 seems strange.

Or is it because BBC worldwide has found great success with the programme abroad and therefore they have asked for a further installment.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Firs of all sorry for being a terrible spy, there was just so much going on, second of all, love the second series so far! I have to say I miss the lighter atmosphere from the series one so I was glad that this episode was actually lighter, more bromancy and god, I missed witty Aramis! Tom was amazing as always and the scene with Athos and d'Art collecting the weapons was my favourite - Athos should smile more often, it suits him. Glad to see Treville having some action with the boys (not glad he's not a captain anymore) but seriously, he's the worst lier ever!

    ReplyDelete
  131. The BBC's decision to green-light S3 has undoubtedly come about because BBC America and BBC Worldwide are helping out with the financial side, along with the fact that filming in Prague apparently has tax benefits etc, making the show cheaper to make than people think.

I also think Adrian Hodges needed at least three series to get d'Artagnan from 'boy Musketeer to legendry Musketeer' and without that third series, that particular storyline would have been left incomplete.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Will Athos warn Milady about Catherine? (probably not) I don't think he wants Catherine to kill her, but she made a clear threat in this episode. I'm guessing we'll find out in episode 10

    ReplyDelete
  133. Now that we´ve met Catherine it got me thinking that there is a possibility that the one that killed Thomas was her and not Milady , and she was just framed to make Athos think she was the murderer of his brother IDK... Though she said..."he was trying to force me" Not shure. But I am pretty sure we are going to have an scene between Milady and Catherine in the Upcoming episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  134. That's what I keep thinking but it definitely looks like milady has just killed Thomas. However, perhaps Catherine killed him and blackmailed Milady into making it look like she did it. I'm not sure about Milady saying Thomas tried to force her - why would he try that on if Catherine and Athos were nearby. It doesn't make sense to me. I wonder if Milady just said that at the spur of the moment in the hope that Athos would protect and believe her.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I've been looking at the dates when Marianne went back and it doesn't look like she was filming The Musketeers on 9th Oct when Jess made that comment about that they were filming something sad! However, that's not to say something else sad happens after this date!

    ReplyDelete
  136. I've noticed that the two episodes that I've enjoyed most this series and the two that I felt were the most complete for me, "An Ordinary Man" and "The Return" both had one writer, Peter McKenna and Simon Ashford respectively. "Emilie" was enjoyable but for me "The Good Traitor" was structurally a mess, with some genuinely dreadful dialogue, some of the worst I've heard on The Musketeers. I know that the show is very much Adrian's baby but I do think there's a lot to be said for allowing one writer to have their voice and vision in an episode. Even if it doesn't work out, at least it's consistent. The joke is that a camel is a horse designed by committee. Maybe for series three the Producers should decide whom they feel best represents the style of writing they're going for, Peter McKenna is certainly one, I would also say that judging by last night, Simon Ashford is another. Place their trust in these writers and let them construct strong, well written episodes next year.

  137. I enjoyed the "difference" of this episode. It was good to be away from Rochefort and co and focus just on the Musketeers. One thing that struck me is that I don't usually notice the music much but this time I was very much aware of the music and I loved it. I also loved little instances ... Athos smiling when D'Artagnan passed a comment in the armoury/crypt, Porthos and Aramis working together, Aramis flipping of the hat :). Catherine was a nasty character and if she and Milady are to have a showdown I hope Milady wins. I don't think Milady is an innocent at all for she has been shown to be a murderer but I do think that her love for Athos was real.

A mix of thoughts on the episode which probably do not make much sense sorry :)

    ReplyDelete
  138. It depends whether Athos realises she's gone to confront Milady in Paris, or if he just think she's gone off to sulk somewhere near Pinon.

    ReplyDelete
  139. I do wonder if we have been shown Milady's desire to turn over a new leaf once she was installed at the palace because it mirrored how she felt when she met and married Athos in the past. But then whatever happened with Thomas put pay to that and she had to go back to that life again. I really would love to know more about her past.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Good point, like Knitty says I suppose it depends of if he has worked out her true intentions, which knowing him he probably hasn't. I don't think he fully understands her bitterness at the whole situation even now, he barely understood the villagers plight until the other Musketeers rallied round after all.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Hey there Maki, hope you're well? :) I hope that S3 will not take so long to set up the bad guys, I think everyone has missed the interaction between the Musketeers at the start of this year.

I think Treville's problem is one of guilt, but yeah, he should let that go and be more honest about the situation really :(

    ReplyDelete
  142. It's a puzzler isn't it, they did the same with Ripper Street two years ago, which didn't get brilliant viewing figures but was doing ok in its slot. Then they moved it and stopped promoting it for some unknown reason and cancelled it...then it immediately won the Radio Times poll for Best TV show and Amazon snapped it up. The same thing has happened last year with In the Flesh - the last season was critically acclaimed, great viewing figures, but it's been cancelled and then won the same poll, smashing every other show out of the water! I do wonder what the hell goes on at the BBC sometimes....

    ReplyDelete
  143. Completely agree with you, love Hugo too.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Horrible looking stunt there for Aramis isn't it!

    ReplyDelete
  145. I took a look at it, I think she's looking fairly neutral there myself. I can imagine several different kinds of emotions going through her head at that point from shock to wanting to escape to calculating. I guess that could be why they've filmed it like that though, a neutralish expression and the bright light, so you can impose whatever you are thinking there on to her.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I have a horrible, horrible feeling I know what the sad thing could be after this evening. I don't know for sure mind, but it does look like any speculation about it is over for me unfortunately :(

    ReplyDelete
  147. It's a possibility, but I lean towards Milady doing the killing as I think it's the simpler explanation. I'm not sure why she would take the blame and come up with an excuse if she didn't do it, without making it an over complicated plot. I think it's possible that Catherine didn't imagine that Milady would kill him even, and she just wanted to expose an affair between them to Athos perhaps. She seems to be someone who is bitter at life experiences rather than born evil, per se.

    ReplyDelete
  148. We have seen multiple flashbacks from Athos's POV but would also love to see some from Anne's

    ReplyDelete
  149. I love Athos but I do not think he will understand Catherine's intentions until after she has attempted to or succeeded at hurting/killing Milady.

    ReplyDelete
  150. I think it has less to do with Adrian Hodges vision of d'Artagnan and more to do with BBCA and BBC worldwide and how popular it is in other markets and money. It is sad that it always comes down to money.

    ReplyDelete
  151. This was a great episode, my favorite so far. Finally! Our boys were all together like old times. And as an added bonus we got to have the Captain with them. I was smiling from start to finish.

Athos (Tom Burke).. what can you say? He was amazing. I wanted to slap him up side the head and hug him at the same time. The scene in the hidden vault with him and D'Artagnan was just wonderful.

Speaking of D'Artagnan, yes you can see him growing up and maturing in each episode. He still has that 'little brother' quality that I love but he also shows the signs of greatness that Athos saw in season one.

Now to Treville. He was fabulous in this one. Perhaps it is a blessing to us 'fans' that he was demoted. We get to see him out there on the line fighting. That said he's still their Captain, could he be anything else?

Porthos and Aramis had smaller roles but they still had me smiling. And there was a bit of the banter that I love so much from them.

So.. Katherine.. going after Milady I would assume. That should be interesting. She could do us all a favor and succeed. I still wonder if perhaps she and Athos might get together down the road....

Sorry if this was a bit gushy but I tend to post with my heart and not so much my head. :)

  154. Finally got to watch the episode and loved it!! Can't help but wonder what the BBCA cut out? I hate that they do that! What a great way to spend my Valentines Day with The Musketeers and a Pinot Grigio.

Tom Burke is brilliant as Athos. Out of all the versions I've seen of The Musketeers his portrayal of Athos is the closest to what I picture in my mind when I read the book. I still feel there is a major reckoning coming between Athos and my lady. What happened at the end of series two was more of a I can't kill you but still can't face you so this isn't over yet kind of thing. Also I can't help but feel we still don't have the full story. That there is something we are missing. Catherine being thrown into the mix will make things interesting. I don't think Athos had any idea the extent if her anger, hurt, resentment and hatred.

I love Treville and I love Hugo. When they showed the scene from next week where he is telling Athos that he has made his home there for too long and maybe it's time to move on I wanted to cry. Treville is a good man who in the name if duty, King and Country has done things and made choices he might have otherwise not done or made. The King is a fool and I want to slap the heck out of him. Treville has been there through it all and no matter what has been a loyal, devoted, trusted and even loving subject to the King. I really hope Treville remains through into series 3 because I love the character, adore the actor and feel there is so much more story to tell.

Porthos is definitely wanting and looking for answers and who can blame him. As I have said before I think when all is said and done Porthos will be more lost then found. Finding out about his family and parentage, confirming that Treville has been keeping things from him and potentially the reasons why. Even finding out that Aramis has been keeping secrets and that Athos and Constance are aware of them but Aramis has not shared with him no matter how understandable based on the secrets that may be....this will all affect Porthos profoundly. He will look at these people that he thought of as family and realize that they have lied to him when he has been open and honest with them. More lost then found.

The maturity and growth we have seen with D'Art is amazing and the comment that Aramis made to him about to risk everything, put it all online...how else does he feel truly alive. A little foreshadowing perhaps?

    ReplyDelete
  155. 100% agreed about Treville.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I think there's little chance of her and Athos getting together. He didn't seem to have much interest in her. I'd hope not. He's already got enough problems with one murderous woman from his past, he doesn't need a second!

    ReplyDelete
  157. Always the trouble with Milady, you can never tell!

    ReplyDelete
  158. Athos heart belongs to milady, at first he need to heal his broken heart and move on from past, start live.

    ReplyDelete
  159. it would be great to have some from her, but I wonder if they'll talk about the past again or have some other flashback (perhaps later if Catherine comes back) . It'll be so interesting to know what really happened back then if it's really catherine who set up Milady & Thomas .

    ReplyDelete
  160. Oh no! That's got me really worried now. :(

  161. How have I never seen Redscharlach's Musketeers reviews before?! This week's is hysterical! Not recommended reading while you're drinking tea, though. My keyboard is now soggy...

    ReplyDelete
  162. I agree there but Adrian would have been disappointed to not be able to 'finish' his vision for the show. I know he once said that he would like to go on "for as long as viewers want us" but unfortunately, that was before viewing figures in the UK were shown to be poor for primetime BBC 1.
Maimie McCoy did imply that the cast were on a 3 year contract at the Apple store last month, meaning that 3 series was the minimum Adrian wanted to get his vision on screen.

    ReplyDelete
  163. I think it's a real shame that reality shows tend to get amongst the highest viewing figures these days, The X Factor doesn't really have anything new to offer viewers ten years down the line but people still lap it up.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Late as hell, but here i am.
I'd like to start talking about the episode with some good phrases, but the only thing that come in to my mind is: "Good Lord Catherine, throw yourself into a well".
I read some comments above and totally agree with Sandi when she said that Catherine had plans for get rid of Milady. Not Thomas murder, but things get out of hands and well... everything falls apart. She's really the prototype of a woman scorned, Marguerite could learn something from her. Well, better not.
At the same time, though i don't like her, i like this hole new built up for Milady and Athos backstory. Thing are less shady and we can see the biggest picture, maybe Athos will join the team some day... This man, i never saw a male character so oblivious of what womens around him want or are up to. You just want grab his hand, put him on a chair and start giving him some lessons on the matter.

One of the character i enjoyed the most was Jeanne, Bertrand's daughter. She really stood up for the village, like other peasants, but when she confronted Catherine and slapped her in return after less then a second i was so proud! She was so "I'm not taking sh*t from you, Lady". Preach. I also liked her way to talk to Athos. She's already one of my favourite guests.

So, in the end, i liked the episode a lot. Having the guys together again was good, but i have to admit that i didn't miss court stuff because i know we will get it back soon and judging by the picture for the next episodes it seems that there will be a more balanced scenario between court stuff and the boys. Well, like in the first episode... all those pauses influenced the perseption of things.

    ReplyDelete
  165. I'm really surprised about Catherine being thrown into the mix as far as Athos and Milady go and I wonder if Catherine will be responsible for Milady's death after Milady has essentially redeemed herself in Athos's eyes. Milady is still a killer, so she can't have 'happily ever after' with Athos, she can only get redemption really.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I agree about reality shows, I'm afraid that is the staple diet in 21st century TV viewing. I too liked Ripper St but they changed the night it was on (similar to Musketeers) and the viewing figures plummeted. Then it was dropped by the BBC.

The viewing figures this season have been irrelevant really, as they have been poor due to outside factors: night of the week (who on earth thought Friday was a good idea) and the general interruptions of its run.

To be honest i wonder if the BBC wanted to kill it off like the others but because of its popularity elsewhere and the money it must make from this, they agreed to a third series. If i was one of the actors/crew involved i'd have a pretty low opinion of my paymaster.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Death being her redepmption so to speak. Maybe she saves Athos from Catherine somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Everything's fine here, thanks :) I was so happy when they announced S3, hopefully I'll make appaerance on the set this time, but no promises.
I'm really looking forward to how the situation with Porthos and Treville and everything around it plays out....also wondering who's currently captain of the Musketeers, even though it isn't probably important at all :D

    ReplyDelete
  169. I find it quite amusing that all four of them have, on more than one occasion, shown themselves to be spectacularly THICK when it comes to women.

    Athos
Married a thief/assassin, apparently missed a whole load of subtext when she allegedly 'murdered' his brother while his bitter and twisted wasoncemeantomarrybutdidn't former betrothed has now toddled off to Paris to kill her, leaving a massively foreshadowing 'she should be dead and I'm a bloody good shot with a bunny gun' threat ringing in Athos's evidently deaf ears. He then took his next girlfriend to a morgue on their first date, for heaven's sake.

Aramis...well, where do we even start. Falling for the Cardinal's mistress wasn't a good idea for starters, nor was that night in the convent with the QUEEN, under the same roof as the girl he knocked up as a teenager who was so traumatised by the whole thing she ran off to be a nun. Only now does he realise it wasn't 'twoo wuv' it was all in his over-romantic imagination. Awkward? Never. He's got blinkers on with Marguerite and is imminently about to learn a woman scorned by a man who slept with her to get close to the baby he fathered with the QUEEN (deep breath) will probably be very, very angry.

D'Artagnan - rather cleverly but also unbelievably stupidly spent his first night in Paris with his future best friend's murderous assassin ex. Genius. Then at the same time moves onto his landlord's wife, before getting p*ssy when she quite sensibly and maturely explains why leaving hubby and her entire life for him isn't as easy as pie...

Porthos - Not as much of a serial idiot as the other three, but frequenting memorial services in search of rich women to con out of a bag of money (or a silver candle snuffer) isn't particularly respectful, is it? Nor is NOT telling her to stay away from the LaBarge death fight in case she found out her new boyf and his mates actually kill people.

I love them all but they do give us a lot of 'what the heck are re you DOING?!! moments when it comes to lady friends!!

  170. Treville had a chance to really shine in this episode. I just pray it isn't a build up to him being gone... There was a quote in the upcoming episode where he says "This place has been my home too long, it's time for a change of scenery." That worries me...

  171. Very true.. I can't see him with anyone else... except Ninon maybe..

  172. maybe she back on series 3

  173. Why would d'Artagnan sleeping with a sexy woman to take his drunk mind off his dead father for a few hours make him thick? Trusting Milady after she framed him for murder, absolutely, but not here.

People have had casual sex for thousands of years, that makes him horny, not stupid.. :)

  174. Missing the point, but never mind.

  175. I know in hindsight it wasn't a good idea :)

  176. I love the way you put it out! xD
I remember Aramis saying too Porthos "one day i will explain you women"... Oh Aramis, don't. The situation is already as critical as possible now.
And after all, there they are, smiling and joking like a bunch of puppies.
Athos is the most shocking though, because the other boys think they have understood the situation, while Athos is completely unaware that the situation even exist! How!? Explain yourself, comte!
While Aramis... well, we lost him. He's so galvanized by the situation. His affair with the Queen is like a lethal combo of things that he desperate wanted. Love, danger, passion, a son... all in one. I love them together, but after this episode in which he was like his old self, happy and content, i'm ready for the fall down. (Ready and worried, and terrified, and a bit sad, and intrigued.) Aka, Rochefort.
The only one who seems to be on the good path, in terms of behaviour, is D'Artagnan. Porthos is currently missing on that front, but we have all the next season.

  177. Maybe a bit harsh. If i am honest i have no interest really in the Porthos storyline, but i could also admit to the fact that i see far too much Aramis in each episode - he hogs the screen and the barmey storyline involving him, Anne and the baby far too much, but putting that aside, i wouldnt want to miss any of the episodes.

I was going to say because there was something for everyone, but this series, some episodes have involved some of the main characters too little.

  178. I know she's a genius!😄 I recommended her reviews on the Emilie thread. Check that one out. Fantastic.

  179. It was great, I enjoyed it :)
Since I had a rather great jump from S1E7 to this episode, I was a little surprised for the turn of events: Why Treville was demoted and who is now in charge? How, oh how Milady is now King's mistress? I didn't even know King needs mistress! But more importantly, shouldn't they run an exhaustive background research for such a position? She's a criminal and they can prove it!
Well, I guess I'll get back to these issues later.

I liked the idea and plot here. As Porthos said, Athos never ceases to surprise us and as Athos told D'Artagnan, we may think we know him but in fact we don't. Athos and Tom Burke were both amazing. The chemistry between all the musketeers were lovely, the caring, teasing, joking and the tension.

The character Catherine seemed to be an interesting character. She was full of bitterness but she had no intention to leave the persons who caused her suffering to have it easy. I'm looking forward to see her showdown with Milady, I really hope to see Milady's demise this season.

I couldn't understand the purpose of that hostile encounter between the girls, we knew Catherine took herself higher than peasants and we knew Jeanne was brave and blunt. That scene was jarring IMO and meaningless, unless we're about to see more of them together!
Another thing, I think they could use more extra for the peasants. They had a village and they were less than the villain's soldiers, and they were all old!

Anyway, it was a great episode, I'm glad I watched it ;)

  180. :o Oh no, I don't mean to worry anyone. It's no more ominous than Jess's tweet at the time tbh. Just kicking myself that I'm now out of that discussion too now, lol.

  181. Well I hope it can go on longer than the three years but I am happy for the three for now

  182. I'm glad you enjoyed it :) I thought the Treville and Milady bits might be confusing, but didn't know if you had picked those hints up already from the preview thread or not, lol.

I think the purpose of that scene between Jeanne and Catherine was that Catherine had just completely misunderstood Athos, so the two of them were coming from an opposing view of what the future held. Catherine thought that Athos had just made her the Comtess by handing all of the land over to her, rather than just giving her a share in it, the same as he had done to Jeanne. Also, I think it showed Catherine's quick temper and bitterness, especially towards women, which is another reason why I think she had a hand in setting up Milady in the past.

  183. "the only thing that come in to my mind is: "Good Lord Catherine, throw yourself into a well"."

Haha, that made giggle! XD She really does come across as a woman scorned doesn't she. Not very likeable at all, but a complex and interesting character who Marianne has played wonderfully imo.

Yeah, I liked Jeanne a lot too, very plucky and obviously had a hard life by the looks of it. Not one to give up because it either! I reckon her father is a bit henpecked though, lol.

  184. Haha, she is brilliant. If you're a Merlin fan have a look back at those too, she is very witty :)

  185. I adored Treville in this one. If anything his demotion has been a bit of a blessing in some ways for the fans as we now get to see him a bit more as he's the 5th Musketeer. I loved seeing what a great soldier he is, and how he can inspire anyone as a leader.

  186. Yay, it's great that BBC America have caught up :)

It does look like Catherine is going after Milady, I kind of hope that one of them will end her in the finale, possibly d'Artagnan since he's Athos' closest friend. She's a very bitter woman, and the last thing Athos needs in his life is another toxic female who's even worse than Milady, lol.

    ReplyDelete
  187. I'm trying not to get too hopeful, so I'm not disappointed, lol. But yes, I would love some scenes between Catherine & Milady now showing the other side of that flashback, to see if our speculation comes to anything!

    ReplyDelete
  188. I agree, she and Athos will never be together, far too much has happened in the years since Thomas died and they will never be able to get over that. If anything, Athos will only feel more responsible for anything she's done since then if she was set up. Which could be a plot point for S3 for him to work through I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  189. It was OK, I could handle that little confusion for the sake of this episode. lol!

I'm sure you have a much better grasp at the show and characters. From what I saw, Catherine was arrogant and haughty toward commoners, whether she was wealthy or not and Jeanne could be bold and insolent whether she was a peasant or landowner. Throughout all her scenes, Catherine was dripping with bitterness! That scene and their confrontation added nothing, and it had no conclusion, for me.
I'm feeling a wave of compassion for Milady here in this thread, like she's redeeming herself! And maybe people are looking for reasons to justify her situation back then. I don't know what had happened, so I really can't argue about it! ;)

  190. Well, after the second break and then no advertising that it was on last night it dropped to a series low of 2.92m with an audience share of 13.9% I've spoken to two people off line about the show today, neither knew it was on on Friday and are a bit peeved about missing it. They are going to be catching it on iPlayer later on today. It seems that the fans advertise the show better than the bloody TV station O_o

  191. I know I'm an idiot for saying this but Milady is growing on me. Well I mean I know as Athos so eloquently points out in the next episode she's a liar and a murderer but part of me wants to believe she really does love Athos and wants to change.....Naw... that will never happen. :) You are right though, the last thing Athos needs is another bitter vengeful woman in his life. If Milady does die I hope it's not Athos that kills her... I think that might break him.

    ReplyDelete
  192. I think it was mainly just to drive home the point that Catherine had misunderstood Athos, and she had a problem with other women. Neither were particularly needed I think if you had paid attention, but sometimes things are over stated, lol.

When you get to episode 1.10 you will hear Milady's side of what happened in the flashback you saw in this episode. That might help make it a little clearer. I have to say that I didn't believe her story at the time, it wasn't until we met Catherine saw her scorned woman act that I have started to wonder what really happened.

  193. I don't really get reality shows if I'm honest....well except Bake Off, I do enjoy that as long as that Paul Hollywood isn't on the screen for too long! and I can get into Strictly if I mute it between the dancing :p But X-Factor/BGT type stuff I have never seen the appeal in.

  194. The Friday night slot really did feel like it was a move to kill off the show. It was a head scratcher because it's so darn popular worldwide, with some of the most popular stars in it. It's unexplainable!

    ReplyDelete
  195. I'd be pretty upset at a number of storylines that could potentially be coming up...trying to word this super carefully, lol...it's been a fairly dark season overall really. Anything could happen tbh.
