Hmmm Waller said she had a boss, I wonder if that person will come into play? Indeed. Why hello General Matthew Shrieve! I forgot you were coming. How are Kodo and Podo? XD
I loved Merlyn setting Slade free! Wow! Oliver needs to train and maybe learn from Ra's al Ghul's student, but damn! That is one hell (or Purgatory) of a lesson! XD
Starling City flashbacks were a lot of fun. Thea copping from some dirtbag... ex-dirtbag! XD Tommy! Tommy! Tommy! Diggle and little bro!
I really hate the "no kill" policy that Arrow has these days, but I guess there is one "good" thing about not killing the villains - They can be brought back to throw everything into chaos at any time! I think I would prefer Ollie just kill them personally, but some returns can be fun!
Speaking of... The return of Paul Blackthorne's I mean Quentin's hair! XD Not as spikey as I recall though.
So Felicity already had a crush on Ollie when he was a dead man? I wanna say "Eww" not "Ooh" I think....
Ollie - "I pulled the hoodie down to cover my face." Maseo - "That disguise wouldn't work even if you smeared grease paint all over your face!" Oh how wrong he was! XD
More truths came out yikes! Thea finds out just how twisted Malcolm can be and that she killed Sara!
I was almost coming to Laurel's side this episode and then she made it all about her once again. Ugh! Well she brought this mess with her dad on herself. No sympathy from me.
This was the first clearly awesome episode in far too long! I'm glad the show is getting back on its feet
* Not sure I am as excited as some others to see Ray's ATOM suit next week. It just looks too much like Tron meets Thunderball to me I guess.
It was a very good episode, but for the first time I felt the flashbacks bogged down what should've been the focal point. I wanted to see more of Oliver and Thea in how they interacted with each other now that the secrets are gone and they're rebuilding their sibling relationship. More time spent on their training sessions and battle against Slade would've been nice also.
I agree with the no kill policy I liked it in season 1 where if there was a bad guy Oliver would just finish them off and be done with it. I also can not stand Laurel, I used to could tolerate her but that is getting harder to do with every episode, she is so irritating.
I'm sure you know which ones are my favorite fan service moments though: The Felicity and Diggle scenes. I also really loved seeing the bond between Oliver and Thea. They've always had a fractured relationship, it'll be interesting to see them take things on as a family with no secrets :)
And you're right. Slade was underwhelming. how sad.
Yeah I loved the Oliver and Thea scenes the most in the episode. I really liked Thea's last scene with Malcolm. I thought the Felicity moment was cute. I liked seeing Diggle's brother. Seeing Tommy again was nice.
Can we all take a moment to discuss the horrendous photo of Oliver that was used? And Felicity still thought he was cute? Yeah, Oliver, put a ring on that finger because even when you look like a psycho, she still digs you. If that isn't love, I don't know what is :p
It's the only photo they had of old Ollie Jajaja since i saw it in the pilot thought it looked weird like if he could challenge Palmer into a stalker eyes conquest... She must really like him if she thought he was cute xD
While the present timeline with Ollie and Thea fighting it out with Slade on Lian Yu was insanely great, the flashbacks were above and beyond the highlight of the episode for me. The flashbacks on this show have never really engaged me but in this episode, they definitely did. Just seeing Tommy again and schoolgirl Thea made me kinda miss when everything was a lot simpler back in the day haha. And oh god when we saw Diggle's little brother Andy for the first time and their relationship for a split second made me tear up a little. Also loved seeing how much of a brother figure Tommy was towards Thea while Ollie was "dead".
I'm really glad Ollie told Thea that she was the one that killed Sara afterall. Thank god they didn't drag it out any longer because she needed to be told that ASAP. It seems like everything is out in the open and now they're finally no more secrets between the Queen siblings. And loved all the bonding between them before all hell broke loose with Slade XD Also, Ollie watching a video of his father telling him to save Starling City from the corrupt people was a really touching scene. "You can save this city" He's already doing it, Robert!
Quentin now feeling betrayed by Laurel for not telling him about Sara sooner is a little sad to watch but it's so understandable. I really think that this has strained their relationship greatly and things won't ever be the same between these two for a while. At least Laurel didn't start drinking again there! That's a plus.
Thea basically telling Malcolm to f*ck off was such a badass moment from her. "I will be your student. I'll be your partner. Even if I have to, I will be your soldier. But never again will I be your daughter" HELL YEAH, SPEEDY!
Overall, I had a feeling that it was going to be one of the more memorable episodes that Arrow has ever done and oh man it definitely was. I'm curious to see what other people felt about it. Looking forward to seeing Malcolm in Nanda Parbat next week!
I even liked/tolerated Laurel until she sort of until she mocked Quentin and his alcoholism. that was low. And it was disgusting because Laurel KNOWS what it's like to be a former alcoholic
I honestly have been able to not be annoyed by Laurel off and on this season, but every time I think the woe-is-me melodrama is over she brings it back.
Now this episode I enjoyed. I mean it wasn't mindblowing or anything, but it was refreshing. Very refreshing. And it was the first episode I've truly enjoyed since The Climb. I smiled for a few things.
I'd say the flashbacks made it for me. I absolutely loved seeing Tommy again, and trying to watch over Thea, still being his bubbly self trying to get through the pain of losing his best friend. Quentin's alcoholism, that was great to see, but also broke my heart b/c I hate seeing him in pain. Seeing Felicity in QC looking at Oliver's picture, and Diggle talking/joking with his brother, was sooo cute! I would've gotten upset if we didn't see Felicity or Diggle through this entire episode, but their scene, even though it was just one, put a big smile on my face. I was pleasantly surprised.
Oliver flashback: Then there were Thea and Oliver. He did ALL that, stayed for ALL that, and he still couldn't tell his family that he was alive. That pained me to see that for him. When he went into the mansion and watched the video with Robert, I smiled for him. That was a nice scene. I cracked up when he had to return from the crime scene and he said, "I put my hood farther down to cover my face." And Maseo goes, "That disguise wouldn't work even if you smeared grease paint all over your eyes." LOL!!! Oh man that was great! And seeing Thea going down, spiraling once more...well made me relieved we've gotten over that. But god, she's still bothering me. (But she didn't in the past) I'll get to that in a bit.
Slade Wilson-Seeing Slade was ok, I probably would've enjoyed his whole appearance if he didn't REPEATEDLY say Shado's name. Ughhh! As soon as he said it, it automatically turned me off. And he didn't stop there, he just kept on going. Yeahhh, did love when he said "KID" I always love when he says Kid. And how he asked about Felicity. I literally said, "Don't..don't go there. He'll kick your ass again." ....I really want to know who the other cellmate is? I feel like I know? Do I know? Do we know? Should we know? Did I miss something? Maybe I'm forgetting something? Someone's in there, and I want to know who. Hmmm. (Scratches head)
Oliver and Thea- I'm glad Oliver told Thea about Sara. I was even glad for her reaction, and when she said, "I'm so stupid." And Oliver replies, "No you're not." I said "Yes she is." Then Thea goes, "Yes I am." Hahaha I laughed. Great Thea, we're on the same page, we both agree that you're/were an idiot for trusting Malcolm Merlyn. And let's talk about that word for a minute. B/c this girl passes that word around like a joint at a party. That's all I've been hearing out her nagging, whining, voice this whole season. I mean What. The. F*ck. Was. That???
The last scene- Now the crap she said tonight, didn't I just say all that last week??? I mean I seriously did. She trusted him enough to live with him, train with him, use his money to buy a loft, etc etc. Now here she comes saying the same exact thing. (I trusted you, i let you into my life) I swear this girl gives me a headache when it's about Merlyn. This is her..."I trusted you." "I will never trust you." "I never trusted you." "I trust you." "You're the only one I trust." "You're the only family I have." "Don't make me choose between my brother and my father". "Stay away from my father." "I will never be your daughter." AHHHHHH!!! SSSSSTTTTTTFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU!!!!! Her mind changes every two seconds. I'm literally over it.
Quentin Lance- I love you. And I want to give you a hug. A BIG ONE!!
Idk about the rest of you but I kinda felt the "Love letter" in this episode and it didn't suck. Could've been better, but I liked it, b/c it was...what's the word... simple. Yeah that's it. It was simple. = )
I was surprised and excited to see him loose at first, but in the end his appearance was a bit underwhelming for me.
The fight scenes were great, but there just was no gravitas to the outcome. Even if it was fun to see Arrow and Speedy fighting together, in the end it was not very different from every other fight where Ollie and Team Arrow stopped a baddie.
Righhtttt!!! He might just be! But then again if he were, Idt Oliver would've been so nonchalant about it. Hmm, maybe he just wasn't thinking, since they wanted to get out so badly.
Yes, I expected more Slade, I wanted more Slade! At least he's alive, and will be back to cause more trouble. And was it just me or it sounded like he didn't like Malcolm using his daughter like that?
I noticed that too. But I wouldn't take it as Slade felt "sympathy" towards Thea about it. He just recognized it as, wow...that guys really crazy. Sorta thing. That's pretty much it.
Oh no, I didn't take it as sympathy, more like Slade wouldn't do that to his own children (does he have a son?) and like you say, recognizing that Malcolm is nuts.
I didn't feel/ hear sympathy or disgust really. Something more like appreciation or simple recognition of the lengths Merlyn will go to trying to achieve his goals..
That Olicity moment was so stretched tho. And I'm going to be real here and understand that it was for Olicity shippers, but for the rest it made no goddamn sense. Why didn't he remembered this?? You can't frame something as this as being memorable if he didn't remembered it.
I could even get mad at them erasing Ollie's feelings for Laurel to keep in on the emotional vibe we are on present time, becasue it WAS pretty shitty, but I will not because the Merlance was giving me life, and DEAR GOD I hope it was pandering and it actually means something for the future.
But seriously, for people who are not Olicity shippers, it's getting harder and harder to connect to that relationship if the writers aren't going the extra mile to reel them in. Writing Olicity as this thing that's destined to be retroactively is just cheap, and will not make people -people who do not already ship them- buy them as the romantic leads.
Otherwise, incredible episode, Slade was pretty much a plot device, but hey, if it were not for Manu's awesomeness, the character itself is just kinda silly, so it's for the best.
Thea was definitely the MVP of the episode and that is just awesome!
Not my favorite episode. It wasn't bad, but I felt the Slade/Oliver rematch was severely underwhelming. But I get it, time constraints and all. Also, do we know who the other prisoner is and I'm blanking?
He just realized that Merlyn's really psycho. I didn't take it any way other than that. Probably a recognition of "wow. SOB. Huh." LOL that's as deep as it goes.
Yeah, Billy Wintergreen aka the guy with the original deathstroke mask that tortured Oliver was the godfather to his son. I wonder what happened to his son though?
Who is buried there that we already know of? Shado, Yao Fei and Robert? So you think there's one more person that dies between Oliver leaving the island the first time and Oliver coming back to Starling for good? Interesting. Totally didn't pick up on the fact that there were 4 graves but only 3 significant people died (that oliver would've felt the need to bury)
I missed the first 10 minutes of the episode because they changed the time on us Canadians without fair warning :(
When I started watching Oliver was just running to tell Thea that Slade was loose on the island. Did anything important happen before that? Did they show how they got to the island? I'm picturing Malcolm flying them in and dropping them off haha but that's probably not the case if Malcolm's trying to stay under the radar. Anyways, any info would be great, I'm thinking the episode won't be up online for a day or two
LOL Nah, I was thinking more about the young Wilsons going to Starling searching for dad, causing trouble to Oliver, or maybe a Slade Wilson spinoff, but don't mind me, those are just my crazy ideas :P
Robert was buried first, then Yao Fei to Robert's left and Shado to Robert's right. The fourth grave shown tonight is the one that Oliver pulled the pistol from. The "tombstone" remained in shadow so it was impossible to read.
In what is turning out to be a disappointing Season 3, this episode is a rare standout. The storylines advanced nicely, the interaction between Ollie and Thea worked real well--and the return of Slade gave the show its much-needed "external" villain. Which is a major relief after week after week after week after week of soul-searching and internal conflict episodes this season.
Indeed, for me the reason The Return was the best of the season so far is because it felt like the far, far superior Season 2. The Island, that some viewers had found annoying in Season 2, showed that it continues to be the symbolic touchstone for Oliver-the-Hero...the Arrow. Bringing Thea to the Island was a fitting place for her to find out a life changing truth about herself (she killed Sara) as well as her own heroic quality--she let Slade live.
Finally, this episode excelled because the writers contained themselves and focused on Ollie and Thea on the Island; giving little time to Laurel's story--and almost no screen time to Diggle and Felicity. Fact of the matter is the Arrow writers can't handle the multiple storylines & characters, and this episode shows how good they can be when not biting off too much.
Bottom line: I'm hoping the writers learn from this episode, and "go small" from now on...and I'll be a much, much happier viewer.
Positives 1. SLADE!!!. He was wonderful. I miss him terribly. That last scene in the cell between him and Oliver after Thea walks away. Slade knows how to hurt Oliver the most
2. Thea knowing the truth. Poor Thea. I felt sorry for her 3. Thea confrontation with Malcolm. You go girl. Loved JB's face when Thea said I will never be your daughter. Awesome. 4. For the first time I felt really sorry for Oliver in the flashbacks. His signature neck breaking kill came to protect Thea. Poor poor Oliver. That military guy looks really shady. Amanda looked remorseful about not letting Oliver leave. 5. Squintern Edison is Andy Diggle. I expected some one more taller. 6. Quentin graveyard scene. Poor guy. Come here let me give you a hug. 7. Oliver getting the message from his father. Poor Oliver. He is such an honorable guy. It felt like one of the first steps towards being Emrald Archer.
Negatives 1. This is my major negative this episode. Laurel in the grave yard scene with Quentin. She had no remorse for lying to her father. She sounded arrogant and condescending when she spoke to him. She tried to treat him like a child. This attitude is why I can never be on Laurel Lance's side. Such self righteousness.
2. I love my Felicity. But that scene at the office was so not necessary. I was hoping Oliver overhearing her or passing by her while she was babbling to some one else. I didn't like this scene at all.
Over all a great episode. Looking forward to next episode with Nanda Parbat and ATOM.
It was like a 1 minute scene. I think you're sort of over exaggerating about it being overstretched lmao. And why is it wrong that it sets the couple up as a sort of destiny? At least it wasn't a retcon and the moment didn't change anything between their dynamic. Felicity made Oliver smile, just like she made him smile in season 1. That's it. No retcon, nothing different... So idk why people are having a problem with it. But I respect your opinion like you respect mine with Laurel :)
But yeah it was weird that the writers just shoved off Laurel/Oliver when he was still supposed to be into her... Regardless it's just another nail in the lauriver coffin and I actually don't mind it because that couple is so unpalatable.
Regardless, as mentioned before, this entire episode was fanservice. Diggle's part was fanservice, the olicity was fanservice, bringing Tommy back was fanservice, Merlance was fanservice, bringing back Slade was fanservice...
I honestly don't get why people think the Diggle scene was necessary but the Felicity scene wasn't... I think both scenes where Oliver sort of bumped into them were nice. Diggle talking to Andy was really sweet. Felicity babbling like her season 1 self was a nice callback.
I loved because Oliver was wearing what seemed to be a resemblance of a smile. And i am always here for those scene. And we know next episode all will go to shit again.
Okie Dokie...my ponderances settled. Malcolm is a nutcase who believes half the stuff he says....especially about Thea. He looked so hurt when Thea read him the riot act and then that look he gave Oliver. Sorry, but sometimes we have to face the consequences of our actions.
Liked the Starling City flashbacks - though I didn't realize until I saw the Det. Lance present day that his first bar scene was one of the flashbacks. I thought he'd fallen off the wagon because of the news about Sara. I'm really glad that they didn't let Laurel's hiding Sara's death pass without consequences.
For sure. I fully support any scene where Oliver smiles. I miss his smile.
It's also a great reminder of how Felicity has hardened and become more jaded yet more confident over the seasons. Season 1 Felicity is definitely not season 3 Felicity.
Diggle scene was not necessary either. For me the important point is Oliver did not see or hear Diggle where as Oliver saw (maybe just a silhouette) and heard Felicity. I would have taken a random pass by like Diggle scene over this photo scene. Looked a bit forced for me. I am sure I will change my opinion during my second watch. I usually write my comments immediately after finishing watching the episode. On second watch it always changes.
I hope you share your thoughts if your opinion does change! But yeah, both scenes were unnecessary. I just liked the olicity one because idk it just shows how important Felicity is to his journey now, that is, Felicity is linked to Oliver's humanity. Plus I doubt Oliver remembered Felicity after that moment, he had a lot going on in his life so it wasn't really a retcon, I think. Also Oliver's smile is just so adorable and I can never say no to that :')
ANYWAYS, I totally agree with you about the Laurel scene with Quentin. It made me really hate her. I mean, Laurel messed up BAD. But she doesn't own up to it. She doesn't admit her mistake. She just acts like such a pompous ass that during that moment I felt sorry for Quentin for having a crappy daughter like Laurel. And if the Quentin flashbacks were shown to soften the blow of Laurel's betrayal and actions, it didn't work on me. I hated that Quentin was a bad father when he was a drunkard. I won't justify his actions. But the least Laurel could've done was sound apologetic. It just goes to show that if she were given a second chance, she wouldn't have done anything differently. Smh.
OH if you want a sort of different perspective on the whole Felcity scene... I sort of saw it like... Hmm how to explain this. I just really like the idea that Oliver doesn't actually remember that moment. Like when he met her in season 1, he still had no clue who she was. But it's a nice scene anyways because Felicity sort of gave him a reason to smile during his years in hell. Which sort of mirrors what she did for him in season 1 and season 2 as well as episode 1 of season 3. Felicity --when her and Oliver are in a good place-- is one of the people that gives Oliver a reason to smile. :) Happy rewatching!
I really liked it. Especially the scene with Felicity talking to Oliver's photo (flashback). Gives me hope that Olicity will happen after all. It was great to see Slade again and I'm glad he's still alive. I hope that he's going to return again.
I think it was more because of the flashbacks and that most of the episode revolves around things that happened in seasons 1 & 2. Doesn't matter what the reason is, I was just happy to see it again.
I think this whole episode was his first step in becoming The Emerald Archer. Robert telling him again to right his wrongs and be a better man, going back to help Maseo, the hood and the grease.
That's what I felt in that scene. Till then he was in the survive mode. Yes he had put himself at risk for other people before like saving Yao Fei, trying to save Sara etc. but this was the episode where Oliver made his first heroic decision to not be selfish and to do the right thing.
I saw the scene again. It is a really cute scene and Oliver's smile is adorable. But I wish the dialogue was not about how cute Oliver was and also she was talking to someone else instead of a photo of a dead dude. I don't know somehow that scene is not sitting well with me. LOL.
Whatever debriefing is it going to stop Oliver from coming back to his life. I think the military guy is going to make him a part of task force X. The question is will Oliver accept the mission on his own or will he be coerced.
I agree. He helped others before because he cares but his main goal was always to find a way home. He decided to sacrifice his happiness to save people. He wanted to go home so badly but he chose to help Maseo capture China White.
Quentin was a horrible father to her while he was drunk. But that does not negate the fact that Laurel kept Sara's death from him for months and robbed the opportunity of burying his daughter from him. His previous actions does not give her moral superiority in this case. She was wrong and the worse part is she has no remorse. She made the whole discussion about her and her masked crusade instead of Quentin and Sara's death. I was starting to like her a lot these past episodes. But this one reminded me why I hate her as a character in the first place.
Her line about how she was always heading to this point just rang so untrue to me. NO Laurel wasn't always on the path to wear a mask. What led her to this path was Sara's final death. Before that, she didn't even care. Now THAT line was a blatant retcon and disregards what Laurel went through this season in order to finally put that mask on. Her in that mask now seems so damn unearned.
Lauriver is trash, another thing we agree on! but IDK, the Olicity scene felt forced, and was the cheapest way of pandering. I do believe that scene could have been better written.
I really dislike the "destiny" approach to Olicity tho, it's like, the opposite of why Olicity works -worked for me- it was all about finding someone else you never thought before, who makes you smile and happy. Overall "destined to be together" is a cheap plot, specially for a couple that happened like Olicity in the fly. Couple that with the lack of continuity of the scene, it's just so very cheap. And I get we let a lot pass by if it's working for you -pandering- but for the rest is just nonsense.
And sadly for the non-Olicitiers, Olicity is starting to be too much nonsense.
I'm seriously starting to wonder if Arrow *ever* made any sense. Nothing in the Malcolm drugs Thea to kill Sara to get the league off his back but it doesn't work so Oliver teams up with him plotline makes sense. None of it. The more they expand on it, the worse it gets.
Malcolm is dumb. He hasn't brought anything to the table. Thea can now defeat Slade (poor de-balled Slade). Thea as a character does whatever they decide she is going to do right then and says things that make no sense. Oliver: "We're in danger Slade Wilson is here." Thea: "Ollie that's crazy." Really? Why is that crazy? Why would you disagree with him about this? Shut up and do what he tells you to do. If Oliver is yelling at you not to go some way on Lian Yu, don't go that way. We had to sit through an episode where the main plot was basically "previously on Arrow season 2." I almost turned the channel when he started talking about Shado and that Oliver should have just told him what happened. I missed Slade and was just sad what they did to him. Because honestly he was a more menacing villain than Malcolm. Why wasn't Laurel GROVELLING to Lance? Where is this crazy attitude come from? I like Tommy, but why is he taking up so much of my screen time? Why is China White obsessed with the Yamashiros, why not ARGUS.
They eventually kinda got the themes back under control: Robert joined forces with bad people because he wanted to save his city and protect his family. Oliver is repeating that mistake. But why is that lesson from Robert here now? Robert was season 1? It felt so anachronistic. To be a killer or not to be a killer is season 2. I felt like we didn't even get to present day until the end with Slade asking Oliver about how many people can he lose and still be Oliver Queen. Finally, something about this season's character arc. It was a waste of an episode with too many logic holes to even write down, but at least it wasn't as frustrating as the last 4.
If only you could see Olicity through my eyes and if only I could see Laurel through yours because your final sentence is exactly how I feel about Laurel.
But high five on the partial agreement thing we have going on ;)
I made a few posts down below with what I think about that scene and the whole 'destiny' thing that you should check out! I don't think that scene was forcing the "Olicity is destined to be together" thing... If I look at the episode as a whole, I think the writers were pointing out that Team Arrow was destined to find each other at some point.
What I liked about Oliver's run in with Felicity is that it accentuated what Felicity does/did for him in the first two seasons. She always managed to make him smile. I thought it was a nice throwback. She always brought about that lightness in him regardless of the tenseness of the situation. I look at that scene and see that Felicity wasn't 'destined' to be with Oliver. I think that she was destined bring about that humanity in Oliver, destined to be the one who could make him smile even in the most terrible conditions. It sounds similar, but it's different in my head :p because the latter indicates that Oliver/Felicity could've easily gone the platonic route. Lord I hope this makes sense.
Was the scene necessary? No. But I appreciated the scene for what it meant.
If I were to look at that scene at face value, sure, I would agree with you. It's cheap pandering. But if you dig deeper, I think you could appreciate what the writers were getting at. if not then I have nothing left to say than let's agree to disagree :D
It opens with them already on the island. They're stick fighting and Oliver is impressed with Thea's skill. She says that Malcolm is a good teacher. In a flashback we see Lance drunk in a bar mourning Sara's first death. Back at the island Ollie realizes Malcolm freed Slade. In a flashback we see Tommy scolding Thea for buying drugs. That's it. Episode should be up on CW.com
Hmm, <100 comments an it's about 12 hours since it aired. Guess nothing much happend.
I'll give this one a "Good", it was somewhat underwhelming.
Liked the Oliver/Thea stuff. Nice to see her final throwing away the glass of Kool-Aid she's been sipping on.
Slade felt underused and rather squandered (wanted to use "wasted", but that epitath belongs to Quentin)
Flashbacks were ho-hum, would have been more effective if Oliver had told Thea in the present how he was back before his official "return". Fun to see Diggle's brother though (If you didn't know, Andy Diggle is the writer who did Green Arrow: Year One).
And ugh, the scene with Felicity was completly artificial unneccesary forced crap.
Exactly... I thought (hoped) Laurel had moved beyond her melodrama and self-centered attitude, but I was so wrong. Here Quentin is dealing with losing his daughter (again) and having his living daughter lie to him for weeks - Not only lie to him, but create elaborate cover-up schemes as well. How does Laurel react to his grief? She attacks him and makes it about her. Seriously?
The show has really been slipping this season! Terrible plotholes, weak character developement,no sense of direction for the storyline their all there. Unfortunately this episode is no exception, in fact its one of the weakest if not worst this season. Starting off; did Oliver Queen really lose his mind after supposedly being killed!? I mean when did Malcom Merlin become the 'voice of reason'' for him? 'Sure go back to the worst place on earth to once again become the very thing you set out not to be, and to top it off take the only family you have left with you'' It truely makes no sense at all if you think about it.And to make matters worse they decided that Slade Wilson should take a backseat? I mean this might not be the most intelligent villain in the DC universe but come on this is pushing it even for him.
Tron! Thanks! That's what I was trying to place. Odd attempt to make the comic book spandex look like a suit of armor. And in the quick clip didn't look like it frames actor's face too well.
Loved the facing consequence aspect for Laurel and for Malcolm. ('You shouldn't have told her.' Really? Cause on one person comes out on top with that strategy. lol)
I kinda wish they'd left Felicity out of the episode. The only purpose that scene served was to meet the episode quota on the actresses contract.
I LOVED seeing Diggle's little brother. And given Eugene Byrd's casting (as opposed to an extra) I hope this means we'll be seeing more of that story soon.
It was not just you. There was definitely a judgemental tone in there (and Malcolm wasn't getting any approval) but then he seemed to realize that an upside to Malcolm's heinous action was that Oliver might lose yet someone else he loved and that seem to please Slade a lot.
I couldn't give it an awesome. I needed more Andy & John Diggle. And I wanted more Felicity. Otherwise, this was such a refreshing episode and felt very familiar to the things I loved about Arrow for two seasons.
I think you're right. And it looks like Felicity is his next target. Could he team up with Malcolm? That'd be interesting. All I know is I'm looking forward to seeing Manu Bennett again.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
It was awesome!!
ReplyDeleteAMAZING! Best episode of the season!!!
ReplyDeleteLove it Thea telling Merlyn off was epic Laurel should've told Lance the truth sooner I understand her reasoning but I think Lance could've handle it
ReplyDeleteHmmm Waller said she had a boss, I wonder if that person will come into play?
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
Thea copping from some dirtbag... ex-dirtbag! XD
Tommy! Tommy!
XD
Not as spikey as I recall though.
So Felicity already had a crush on Ollie when he was a dead man?
I wanna say "Eww" not "Ooh" I think....
Ollie - "I pulled the hoodie down to cover my face."
Maseo - "That disguise wouldn't work even if you smeared grease paint all over your face!"
Oh how wrong he was!
I found Slade`s return really underwhelming but I loved Thea in this episode. Good episode overall.
ReplyDeleteIt was a very good episode, but for the first time I felt the flashbacks bogged down what should've been the focal point. I wanted to see more of Oliver and Thea in how they interacted with each other now that the secrets are gone and they're rebuilding their sibling relationship. More time spent on their training sessions and battle against Slade would've been nice also.
ReplyDeleteWell, MG did call it a love-letter. Love letter episodes are usually rife with fan service :p
ReplyDelete"a love letter to the fans" The whole concept of him returning to Starling City set the stage for tons of fan-service haha.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the no kill policy I liked it in season 1 where if there was a bad guy Oliver would just finish them off and be done with it. I also can not stand Laurel, I used to could tolerate her but that is getting harder to do with every episode, she is so irritating.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you know which ones are my favorite fan service moments though: The Felicity and Diggle scenes. I also really loved seeing the bond between Oliver and Thea. They've always had a fractured relationship, it'll be interesting to see them take things on as a family with no secrets :)
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right.
ReplyDeleteCan we all take a moment to discuss the horrendous photo of Oliver that was used? And Felicity still thought he was cute? Yeah, Oliver, put a ring on that finger because even when you look like a psycho, she still digs you. If that isn't love, I don't know what is :p
ReplyDeletethey used way too much makeup for season 1 pre-island oliver.
ReplyDeleteIt's the only photo they had of old Ollie Jajaja since i saw it in the pilot thought it looked weird like if he could challenge Palmer into a stalker eyes conquest... She must really like him if she thought he was cute xD
ReplyDeleteI thought it was pretty damn awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhile the present timeline with Ollie and Thea fighting it out with Slade on Lian Yu was insanely great, the flashbacks were above and beyond the highlight of the episode for me.
ReplyDeleteI honestly have been able to not be annoyed by Laurel off and on this season, but every time I think the woe-is-me melodrama is over she brings it back.
ReplyDeleteSo that was awesome.
ReplyDeleteNow this episode I enjoyed. I mean it wasn't mindblowing or anything, but it was refreshing. Very refreshing. And it was the first episode I've truly enjoyed since The Climb. I smiled for a few things.
ReplyDeleteI'd say the flashbacks made it for me.
ReplyDeleteThe fight scenes were great, but there just was no gravitas to the outcome. Even if it was fun to see Arrow and Speedy fighting together, in the end it was not very different from every other fight where Ollie and Team Arrow stopped a baddie.
I think Captain Boomerang is in the ARGUS prison as well...
ReplyDeleteRighhtttt!!! He might just be! But then again if he were, Idt Oliver would've been so nonchalant about it. Hmm, maybe he just wasn't thinking, since they wanted to get out so badly.
ReplyDeleteYes, I expected more Slade, I wanted more Slade! At least he's alive, and will be back to cause more trouble.
ReplyDeleteAnd was it just me or it sounded like he didn't like Malcolm using his daughter like that?
I noticed that too. But I wouldn't take it as Slade felt "sympathy" towards Thea about it. He just recognized it as, wow...that guys really crazy. Sorta thing. That's pretty much it.
ReplyDeleteOh no, I didn't take it as sympathy, more like Slade wouldn't do that to his own children (does he have a son?) and like you say, recognizing that Malcolm is nuts.
ReplyDeleteYes he has a son.
ReplyDeleteInteresting...
ReplyDeleteFour graves on the island cemetery. So someone else will be buried there in flashbacks sometime during the next two seasons.
ReplyDeleteI didn't feel/ hear sympathy or disgust really.
ReplyDeleteSomething more like appreciation or simple recognition of the lengths Merlyn will go to trying to achieve his goals..
Haha, you think that's interesting? Well he has one of each. Lol Let that sink in. LOL
ReplyDeleteThat Olicity moment was so stretched tho. And I'm going to be real here and understand that it was for Olicity shippers, but for the rest it made no goddamn sense. Why didn't he remembered this?? You can't frame something as this as being memorable if he didn't remembered it.
ReplyDeleteI could even get mad at them erasing Ollie's feelings for Laurel to keep in on the emotional vibe we are on present time, becasue it WAS pretty shitty, but I will not because the Merlance was giving me life, and DEAR GOD I hope it was pandering and it actually means something for the future.
AND BRING TOMMY BACK
Not my favorite episode. It wasn't bad, but I felt the Slade/Oliver rematch was severely underwhelming. But I get it, time constraints and all. Also, do we know who the other prisoner is and I'm blanking?
ReplyDeleteCaptain Boomerang
ReplyDeleteHe just realized that Merlyn's really psycho. I didn't take it any way other than that. Probably a recognition of "wow. SOB. Huh." LOL that's as deep as it goes.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Billy Wintergreen aka the guy with the original deathstroke mask that tortured Oliver was the godfather to his son. I wonder what happened to his son though?
ReplyDeleteWho is buried there that we already know of? Shado, Yao Fei and Robert? So you think there's one more person that dies between Oliver leaving the island the first time and Oliver coming back to Starling for good? Interesting. Totally didn't pick up on the fact that there were 4 graves but only 3 significant people died (that oliver would've felt the need to bury)
ReplyDeleteI missed the first 10 minutes of the episode because they changed the time on us Canadians without fair warning :(
ReplyDeleteWhen I started watching Oliver was just running to tell Thea that Slade was loose on the island. Did anything important happen before that? Did they show how they got to the island? I'm picturing Malcolm flying them in and dropping them off haha but that's probably not the case if Malcolm's trying to stay under the radar. Anyways, any info would be great, I'm thinking the episode won't be up online for a day or two
I so loved tonight's Episode of Arrow "The Return" loved the bonding between Ollie and Thea.
ReplyDeleteLOL Nah, I was thinking more about the young Wilsons going to Starling searching for dad, causing trouble to Oliver, or maybe a Slade Wilson spinoff, but don't mind me, those are just my crazy ideas :P
ReplyDeleteNo I didn't but i read on Stephen Amell's Facebook page that is the 60th Episode of Arrow its why i guess they went back to the old Arrow head intro.
ReplyDeleteRobert was buried first, then Yao Fei to Robert's left and Shado to Robert's right. The fourth grave shown tonight is the one that Oliver pulled the pistol from. The "tombstone" remained in shadow so it was impossible to read.
ReplyDeleteI think the 4th grave might say "Oliver" and he just hid weapons there.
ReplyDeleteIn what is turning out to be a disappointing Season 3, this episode is a rare standout. The storylines advanced nicely, the interaction between Ollie and Thea worked real well--and the return of Slade gave the show its much-needed "external" villain. Which is a major relief after week after week after week after week of soul-searching and internal conflict episodes this season.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, for me the reason The Return was the best of the season so far is because it felt like the far, far superior Season 2.
Bottom line: I'm hoping the writers learn from this episode, and "go small" from now on...and I'll be a much, much happier viewer.
yeah that was Andy
ReplyDeleteCLARK EDISON IS ANDY DIGGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!! i loved all the Oliver and Thea scenes them bonding was amazing
ReplyDeleteI really liked the return of GossipSlade. xD
ReplyDeleteOh my god....My. Exact. Thoughts. Seriously! I couldn't help but laugh out loud, because jesus Felicity, were you seeing what we were all seeing??
ReplyDeletelmaooo no worries.
ReplyDeleteHe hasn't been introduced.
ReplyDeletePositives
ReplyDelete1. SLADE!!!. He was wonderful. I miss him terribly. That last scene in the cell between him and Oliver after Thea walks away. Slade knows how to hurt Oliver the most
2. Thea knowing the truth. Poor Thea. I felt sorry for her
Negatives
ReplyDeleteBut yeah it was weird that the writers just shoved off Laurel/Oliver when he was still supposed to be into her...
ReplyDeleteI loved because Oliver was wearing what seemed to be a resemblance of a smile. And i am always here for those scene.
ReplyDeleteAnd we know next episode all will go to shit again.
Okie Dokie...my ponderances settled. Malcolm is a nutcase who believes half the stuff he says....especially about Thea. He looked so hurt when Thea read him the riot act and then that look he gave Oliver. Sorry, but sometimes we have to face the consequences of our actions.
ReplyDeleteLiked the Starling City flashbacks - though I didn't realize until I saw the Det. Lance present day that his first bar scene was one of the flashbacks. I thought he'd fallen off the wagon because of the news about Sara. I'm really glad that they didn't let Laurel's hiding Sara's death pass without consequences.
I really like this Thea.
Really enjoyed the episode.
For sure. I fully support any scene where Oliver smiles. I miss his smile.
ReplyDeleteIt's also a great reminder of how Felicity has hardened and become more jaded yet more confident over the seasons. Season 1 Felicity is definitely not season 3 Felicity.
Completely missed the Arrowhead switch off. Huzah, an excuse to watch again.
ReplyDeleteDiggle scene was not necessary either.
ReplyDeleteI hope you share your thoughts if your opinion does change!
ReplyDeleteANYWAYS, I totally agree with you about the Laurel scene with Quentin. Smh.
I am very afraid what debriefing means, it does not boad well imo. I wonder if that debriefing still has a "hold" on Oliver.
ReplyDeleteOH if you want a sort of different perspective on the whole Felcity scene...
ReplyDeleteI noticed the old arrowhead immediately because I really missed it.
ReplyDeleteWho needs an excuse? lol
Thanks :)
Remember S1E2? Just a happy coincidence but they can spin it as if he was looking for blonde girl in a ponytail with glasses.
ReplyDeleteI really liked it. Especially the scene with Felicity talking to Oliver's photo (flashback). Gives me hope that Olicity will happen after all. It was great to see Slade again and I'm glad he's still alive. I hope that he's going to return again.
ReplyDeleteGreat. I love that actor. Hopefully we'll get to see more of him and know more about HIVE.
ReplyDeleteI think it was more because of the flashbacks and that most of the episode revolves around things that happened in seasons 1 & 2. Doesn't matter what the reason is, I was just happy to see it again.
ReplyDeleteI think this whole episode was his first step in becoming The Emerald Archer. Robert telling him again to right his wrongs and be a better man, going back to help Maseo, the hood and the grease.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I felt in that scene. Till then he was in the survive mode. Yes he had put himself at risk for other people before like saving Yao Fei, trying to save Sara etc. but this was the episode where Oliver made his first heroic decision to not be selfish and to do the right thing.
ReplyDeleteI saw the scene again. It is a really cute scene and Oliver's smile is adorable. But I wish the dialogue was not about how cute Oliver was and also she was talking to someone else instead of a photo of a dead dude. I don't know somehow that scene is not sitting well with me. LOL.
ReplyDeleteWhat a flirt he was. Season 1 fake Oliver was fun.
ReplyDeleteAnd now we have the depressing S3. *sobs*
ReplyDeleteEh, ya win some, you lose some :)
ReplyDeleteWhatever debriefing is it going to stop Oliver from coming back to his life. I think the military guy is going to make him a part of task force X. The question is will Oliver accept the mission on his own or will he be coerced.
ReplyDeleteI agree. He helped others before because he cares but his main goal was always to find a way home. He decided to sacrifice his happiness to save people. He wanted to go home so badly but he chose to help Maseo capture China White.
ReplyDeleteQuentin was a horrible father to her while he was drunk.
ReplyDeleteHer line about how she was always heading to this point just rang so untrue to me.
ReplyDeletePlot twist: Felicity was actually talking about Robert.
ReplyDeleteLauriver is trash, another thing we agree on! but IDK, the Olicity scene felt forced, and was the cheapest way of pandering. I do believe that scene could have been better written.
ReplyDeleteI really dislike the "destiny" approach to Olicity tho, it's like, the opposite of why Olicity works -worked for me- it was all about finding someone else you never thought before, who makes you smile and happy.
ReplyDeleteMalcolm is dumb.
ReplyDeleteBut high five on the partial agreement thing we have going on ;)
I made a few posts down below with what I think about that scene and the whole 'destiny' thing that you should check out!
But if you dig deeper, I think you could appreciate what the writers were getting at. if not then I have nothing left to say than let's agree to disagree :D
i thought he was a creeper in the photo. Looked like Dexter when he is about to kill. Love is blind :P
ReplyDeleteIt opens with them already on the island. They're stick fighting and Oliver is impressed with Thea's skill. She says that Malcolm is a good teacher. In a flashback we see Lance drunk in a bar mourning Sara's first death.
ReplyDeleteBack at the island Ollie realizes Malcolm freed Slade.
In a flashback we see Tommy scolding Thea for buying drugs. That's it. Episode should be up on CW.com
Hmm, <100 comments an it's about 12 hours since it aired. Guess nothing much happend.
ReplyDeleteI'll give this one a "Good", it was somewhat underwhelming.
Oh well, maybe next week is more exciting.
I totally agree. LAurel is so boring and annoying..
ReplyDeleteExactly...
ReplyDeleteI thought (hoped) Laurel had moved beyond her melodrama and self-centered attitude, but I was so wrong. Here Quentin is dealing with losing his daughter (again) and having his living daughter lie to him for weeks - Not only lie to him, but create elaborate cover-up schemes as well. How does Laurel react to his grief? She attacks him and makes it about her. Seriously?
But at least she has a light inside her!
Ack!
ReplyDeleteTron! Thanks! That's what I was trying to place. Odd attempt to make the comic book spandex look like a suit of armor. And in the quick clip didn't look like it frames actor's face too well.
ReplyDeleteLoved the facing consequence aspect for Laurel and for Malcolm.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't give it an awesome. I needed more Andy & John Diggle. And I wanted more Felicity. Otherwise, this was such a refreshing episode and felt very familiar to the things I loved about Arrow for two seasons.
ReplyDeleteI think you're right. And it looks like Felicity is his next target.
ReplyDeleteCould he team up with Malcolm? That'd be interesting. All I know is I'm looking forward to seeing Manu Bennett again.
I did not have a real issue with the Felicity scene, but if they left it out I would not have missed it! It just felt superfluous to me.
ReplyDeleteAgreed on Malcolm saying Ollie should not have told Thea. It's a lose-lose argument for whoever enters the conversation!
Thea who has been on an honesty crusade this season is now forced to keep secrets from her pseudo-big-sister. Oh joy! XD
I love him, too. As soon as I saw him I was like "Clark!" LOL
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing Digg's little brother and I always love seeing Eugene Byrd, but, to be honest, he wasn't who I was picturing for the character.
ReplyDeleteExactly. lol
ReplyDeleteI know! As soon as I saw him I was like "Clark!" LOL
ReplyDelete"5. Squintern Edison is Andy Diggle. I expected some one more taller."
ReplyDeleteMe too. But it was still great seeing him. :)
I don't get it either because I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteit's so awesome right?! and sad too because he's dead in present
ReplyDeleteDefinitely, but so true. :(
ReplyDeleteYes, it's him. That's why Oliver told Thea he didn't think the other prisoner woudl be helping t hem.
ReplyDeleteI left that ep with the impression that Captain Boomerang was on the recruitment path for the Suicide Squad.
ReplyDeleteWith you there. I was expecting someone, at least, as big as Digg. But I supposed little guys and kick backside too. :-)
