FX's 'Bastard Executioner' Cast Includes Kurt Sutter, Katey Sagal, Stephen Moyer
Kurt Sutter and FX have set a cast of familiar faces and newcomers for its period drama pilot The Bastard Executioner

The Bastard Executioner centers on a warrior knight in King Edward II's charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when the violence finds him again, he's forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.

Newcomer Lee Jones, an Australian theater actor, will star as Wilkin Brattle, the imposing and emotionally deep yet spiritually tortured former knight in charge of King Edward I. He now lives a simple agrarian life.

True Blood alum Stephen Moyer will co-star as Milus Corbett, a street-smart and noble savvy who was one of Ventris' marshals in the army. He now serves as his chamberlain, chancellor and justiciar — and friend and drinking mate.

Katey Sagal, who was Sutter's leading lady in Sons of Anarchy, will star as Annora of the Alders, a woman described as prescient, mystical and beautiful who offers predictions, cures and potions.

Flora Spencer-Longhurst is set as Baroness Lowry "Love" Aberffraw Ventris. As cunning as she is kind and beautiful, the character hails from a wealthy Welsh family and married Ventris at 17 to protect her family's land. Her noble duties always in conflict with her Welsh pride.

Sutter, as he did with Sons of Anarchy, will also have an on-screen role and play a The Dark Mute, the mate and guardian of Annora (Sagal). The character rarely speaks and no one's ever seen his face.

Sam Spruell (Snow White and the Huntsman, The Hurt Locker) is set as Toran Prichard, an archer under Madog Llywelyn in the last major Welsh rebellion. He put down the bow and picked up the hoe and is Wilkin's best mate.

Darren Evans (Galavant) will star as Ash y Goedwig, a trapper and orphan "of the woods" who is a friend to Wilkin.

Danny Sapani (Trance, Penny Dreadful) will portray Berber the Moor: A large, educated man who is a converted Muslim and farmer as well as a friend to Wilkin.

Timothy V. Murphy (Sons of Anarchy) will play Father Ruskin, a brawny yet gentle man with a bottled fury who is a former soldier that Left the military for the seminary. He's a priest, rector and teacher of the court.

Sarah White will play as Isabel Kiffin, Lady Love's handmaiden and trusted confidant.

Sarah Sweeny rounds out the cast as Jessamy Maddox, described as pretty but hardened by abuse, she's the executioner’s wife.

Additionally, Matthew Rhys (The Americans) has booked a guest starring role as Gruffudd y Blaidd, the leader of the Welsh rebels, Byth Encil. The role is not expected to impact his co-starring role on FX's The Americans.

  1. OMG Wesley Snipes.Endgame is going to be amazing.

  2. The Bastard Executioner has such a good cast, really hope it gets picked up.

  3. Surprised about Calista being cast in Supergirl, but looking forward to see her in this different role.

It was so obvious JP was catching Mr Adorable Woods for her new show. And I'm glad cause this means 2 things, Kai will be a gone by season end and hopefully CW picks up Cordon. These 4 seem like a good combination, I think this pilot could work, for me at least. Take The100 place next winter/spring.

I hope CW announced all their casts in this kind of bunches, not 1 by 1.

    ReplyDelete
  4. So CW is already casting, they usually do not order more pilots after they started announcing cast, right?

I was hoping for 1-2 more pilots, but at least Cheerleader Death Squad has better chances

    ReplyDelete
  5. The CW is acting really odd though. 4 pilots really is very little. I think all 4 stand a very good chance of being picked up as it is. Cordon is probably a sure thing at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yes, i agree that 4 is very little. I also think Cordon is the one with best chances of being picked. I still think The Atom could be picked since they already have a lead and they are introducing Emily Kinney as Atom character too (God, i wish, i miss her as Beth)

    ReplyDelete
  7. I got a feeling that ATOM will maybe get a backdoor pilot during Arrow season 4A and produce a show for summer 2016.
It is unbelievably odd CW announced just 4 pilots but who knows what is going down in Mark P's head. But Cordon seems like a sure pick for fall. Probably as a midseason entrance after The100 ends.

  8. I think Cordon/Cheerleader will get fall spot. One of Dead People/Tales will get midseason spot , the other summer spot. Or one of them won't be picked

    ReplyDelete
  9. I already see Cheerleader get The Orginals 8pm spot and live happily ever after with Jane.
Tales doesn't work for me at all and I don't see how it'll work at all, but I assume CW is trying to bring back half hour scripted programme with this 2 story in an ep approach.
Dead people seems like something low budget and could work for CW but who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I can imagine Tales work in summer

Dead People sounds weird to me because it looks just like iZombie so it is weird they chose this pilot

    ReplyDelete
  11. I assume there is more mystery behind all those pilots especially Tales and DP. But who knows.
Back to the primer topic I so thrown off by CW ordering just 4 pilots I expected more considering they intend to air more programme during summer 2016 @nd thought they would produce something for summer as well.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Who knows, maybe they can still order a few more in the upcoming days

I really hope so, at least. I think all 4 pilots have potential to be amazing, but i can still imagine something better than Tales+Dead People. Cordon and Cheerleader sound really amazing and i hope they will get picked

  13. Wow - some great casting news! I was originally rather meh about Endgame but the addition of Snipes has changed that. Never been a fan of Flockhart but if the show gets picked up (likely), I'll still give it a shot. I've been looking forward to the Chicago Med show since I first heard rumors about it and now that Platt is involved, I am really excited and rooting for a pick up!

**sigh** I love pilot season :-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree, I think all four will be picked up -two in fall, two in Midseason.Flash,Arrow,SPN,TO,VD( probably ,unless contracts are an issue and Ian/Nina/Paul agree to only a short season) all get full season.Reign could either get a full season or a short one idk,we' ll have to see.I am a little suprised in a way that only four ate picked up since TCAs Mr P said he planned to pick up 5-6 but on the hand, the schedules pretty full even if a couple of the already renewed shows go to summer or Midseason.

    ReplyDelete
  15. "Bastards executioner" have a great acst. That's a must see.
Isnt it weird when the companies has to put in their press reslease that it's the first time using people of colour as their lead D: is that supposed to help?.

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's because they renewed many shows.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Really hoping that we'll still get to see Laurie Holden on Major Crimes.

Also, Katey Sagal is going to have an English accent. Can't. Wait.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wesley doing TV? Oh my... Well I do like him, so yeah now Endgame is on my radar for sure. (though I'm still not 100% sure it might not be a mess... also he would have been great on Empire, but oh well...)

Callista in a superhero show? Whoa! I'm pleasantly surprised...

Of course Dick Wolf would kill it with his casting! I love me some Oliver Platt, but I'm not following that franchise. So I dunno if I'll bother with this show.

Cool for the CW to be aiming for diversity with it's first African-American leads for Gordon. Still it's Julie Plec, and the only draw still is that David Nutter is directing it.

That FX pilot does sound intriguing... might have to keep an eye out on that one...

Sneaky Pete already had me at Bryan Cranston-David Shore. Adding Margo Martindale in the mix only sweetens the pot really.

Not gonna lie, I think 48 hours till Monday could be fun. The concept offers itself for super broad comedy, yes, but I think it's gathering a cast that can make it work. We'll see.

I feel Cuckoo will just be offensive...

Love Lisa Lapira & BAG... and I can usually really enjoy Jenna Elfman sit coms, so this has things working for it. But I don't have high hopes, because there's not one person on that cast besides Elfman who's worked on something long term in a while...

Don't care much about the rest. Either the casting leaves me "meh" or the I like the actors but the show's premise hasn't grabbed my attention or it's a combo of those two...
