This was a pretty routine week for “NCIS: Los Angeles,” except for the fact that Sam and Callen were kidnapped by ISIS. That is definitely not routine. But the episode itself didn’t showcase as many great scenes as we’ve come to enjoy in the series. The action and plot took center stage over the characters this week. As good a job as “NCIS:LA” does with the plots, these are never my favorite episodes. For me, they just don’t compare to the character-driven episodes.
“Forest for the Trees” begins with Sam and Callen meeting up with an anonymous tipster who claimed to have information on a missing NSA agent. Of course the meeting takes place on a secluded dirt road. But it turns out to be a set-up. The bad guys set off a smoke grenade and shoot the NCIS agents with tranquilizer darts. Sam and Callen wake up on the floor of a machinery room somewhere in a forested area. But it doesn’t take long for Kensi and Deeks to notice they are missing. As the team tries to track down their whereabouts, Sam and Callen attempt to escape. In the process they come upon another man who claims to be the NSA agent. But we soon learn he is not the real agent. Just when you want to yell at your TV screen to let them know, it seems Sam and Callen knew the truth about his identity almost all along. That means they are one step ahead of the man. Not only do they save themselves and the real NSA agent, they also keep an ISIS informant safe and take down the real ISIS insurgents in L.A.
Sam and Callen
Sam and Callen make the best of their situation as they work to get out of the machinery room. Finding a trap door in the floor, they use a convenient tool kit found in a hole in the wall to pry open the panel. (I’m assuming the tool bag was left there on purpose to help them escape so they could run into the fake analyst??) The trap door then leads them to a tunnel underground. Sam isn’t too happy about being in the tunnel. He doesn’t want to be reminded of movies where people die in tunnels, and he can’t disguise his annoyance with Callen when they get to the end and need the screwdriver but Callen left it behind. Fortunately Callen can just go back and get it. Sam’s annoyance was entertaining, though. And so was Callen’s amusement at it. Callen was the ‘glass half full’ guy while Sam was his ‘glass half empty’ counterpart.
Once they are out of the tunnel, they find themselves surrounded by trees – and a man who shows them his NSA identification. He helps Callen escape a trip wire, so the men trust him. I liked how the show’s writers accomplished this entire plot reveal. They kept throwing us off. I liked that you didn’t trust the guy until they found his badge. And then I liked how the audience was let in on the secret of his identity when the NCIS team looks at his real picture back in Ops – and you realize that’s not the same man with Sam and Callen. While the audience is in on the secret, Sam and Callen are clearly in danger but they don’t seem to know it. But these two are smarter than that. After they head back to the main building and Sam finds the real NSA agent, you still don’t suspect that Callen knows anything is amiss until the man goes for a gun – and Callen is suddenly holding a gun on him. That was a great moment because Callen’s knowledge was a surprise to the audience.
After that, you still thought ISIS had the location of Granger’s meeting with the ISIS informant. But Callen comes to the rescue there, too. Callen gave their fake NSA guy bad information on the meet-up to pass along, so ISIS went to the wrong location where the Feds showed up to arrest them. Later we learn all the details of how Sam and Callen figured out the truth. Sam’s knowledge of the NSA building didn’t jive with something the man said, and Callen then found their own guns and phones and got a message to NCIS about the wrong location so the Feds could step in. The way everything unfolded was fun. I was first surprised they let the audience in on something the team didn’t know, but it turned out that the team knew much more than us after all! I enjoyed the fake-out.
Deeks and Kensi
This week Deeks was on a “clean food” kick, eating healthy food from a food truck he loved. But Kensi (or “Negative Nelly” as Deeks calls her) tears him down by letting him know the food is frozen. Beyond that, she also knows that the wonderful Italian meal Deeks painstakingly cooked for her recently was not homemade. She knows he didn’t slave away in the kitchen – she found the fast food wrappers in the trash. Deeks tries to squelch this interrogation, but it doesn’t work. Kensi knows his interrogation tactics. There is no way out - he is caught. Nice try, Deeks.
Later Kensi and Deeks go find a man who had sold the explosives and weapons to the terrorists. Kensi uses the food incident from earlier to make Deeks go after the man while she stays in the car. As the man runs into a creek, Deeks at first doesn’t want to jump in because the water looks cold. But he can’t avoid it and jumps on the man in the water. I loved how that wasn’t the end as the man keeps going and Deeks decides to tackle him again.
Deeks also had my favorite quote of the episode as he posed as a cook at the informant meeting (and Kensi posed as a waitress). His cook cover was perfect for what they had been talking about earlier in the episode. So after Granger reports that “the cook sucks,” Kensi is more than happy to let him know. But Deeks gets the last word when he tells Kensi, “You know what I’m gonna do? I’m gonna make you some homemade alphabet soup so you can eat your words when you taste my real cooking.”
However, it turns out his real cooking isn’t too good after all. Earlier Hetty told Granger that Deeks’ Swedish nachos were a hit at the holiday party. But we learn the truth in the last scene when Deeks whips them out again and no one wants to eat them. They’d all told him they were good, but they were lying. They didn’t want him to feel bad but the truth is out now. Deeks can’t cook. But Granger has heard great things about the dish and excitedly wants to try the nachos and be a part of the group since he wasn’t invited to the holiday party. The joke was on Granger – except somehow he likes these gluten-free snacks. I guess he and Deeks are on the same page.
Other Thoughts
- I liked how Eric revealed that Sam had gone home the night before to watch a documentary on Afghanistan’s sport of choice: Buzkashi. Nice tidbit about Sam. I could totally see him doing that!
- It is a good thing for us that Sam is into pumping iron! That exchange made me smile.
- I enjoyed how Kensi and Deeks wanted to go after Sam and Callen, but listened to Granger when he said he needed their help. They had to put the safety of the country first. For once, Granger was right.
- Sam was pretty smart when he turned on the electric fence again to catch the fake agent. You knew that was coming, but it was still entertaining.
- I liked how Sam enjoyed the “Laurel and Hardy” references because in the films, “The big guy is smart.”
What did you think of "Forest for the Trees?" Did you enjoy the plot twists? Did you want more character scenes? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Just wrote a 2 page paragraph with my opinion and my spamware took it away.Yikes
ReplyDeleteFound the plot kind of boring. Like most episodes this season I am going to have to rewatch them in a few years to remember what happened.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another great review, Tonya.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the plot twists and the fake-out. I was wondering why they were being so trusting. lol They definitely sucked me in too.
The exchange about pumping iron made me laugh out loud. It was a perfect come back for Sam.
Those two were like an old married couple with their bickering this week. lol Sam hates to show any weakness so his annoyance over the tunnel was understandable, and ,of course, Callen was milking it.
I also found the "found" tool belt a bit too convenient. It's discovery made me believe that it was planted for some nefarious reason by ISIS and I waited the whole episode for the to come to light. I was surprised that Sam and Callen didn't make some remark about finding the tool belt being too easy.
ReplyDeleteI thought this episode was dull, and the plot "twists" rather obvious. This is supposed to be sweeps season, and this is the best they could do?
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this episode. I like the glimpses of personal moments of Densi, and how they know their other partners when Sam & Callen were late. I did think this was a balanced episode of character and plot - S&C, went into action mode- creating a way out. Densi, the backup, analyzing the situation, ready to recuse.
ReplyDeleteI did see the twist. Sam asking the impostor about how they got to him was telling, and when he said "a fine mess you've gotten me into", Callen's subtle Aha revealed the fact they knew the trap was on going.
Granger's need to be a part of the team was surprising, sweet and weird.
I'd have to put this episode in the "liked it, didn't love it category". I prefer the character driven episodes myself. While I always enjoy the Callen/Sam banter, I didn't really care for the forgotten screwdriver bit. It just seemed out of character that Callen wouldn't have thought to hold onto it. He's a much better agent than that. What can I say, Callen has always been my favorite character and it stands out to me when the writers do something that doesn't fit what we usually see from the character. I did enjoy the "Great Escape" references and banter though. I liked how Sam and Callen played the imposter NSA guy. I agree with the person who said this was a strange choice of an episode for a sweeps period. Most of the show's episodes have been excellent this season, but this one was just ok.
ReplyDeleteI must say I saw the plot twist coming a mile away; I probably watch way too much TV. ;) That said, this was still pretty fun to watch. Lots of fun banter all around. I loved Sam and Callen's classic film references.
ReplyDeleteTonya...I hope you don't mind if I borrow your opening line of your fine review and change a few words....but to me..this was a pretty routine & weak episode for “NCIS: Los Angeles!
ReplyDeleteJaybird mentioned in his post....that this was a sweeps month...and asked if this was the best they could do..and the same thought crossed my mind while watching it.
This episode felt like it was just mailed in..and they were making things up..as they went along.
Ratings wise....it had 10.35 million viewers..which I think might have been the most this season...but I wonder how many of those millions were 1st time viewers of the show and if they will bother to tune back in.....after such a pedestrian effort.
The show is easily winning it's time slot on Monday nights...thanks to the fact Castle seems to have lost steam & viewers this season...and State of Affairs on NBC....is pretty well...D.O.A...
But the show runners can't assume...that will always be the case..because next season.,..they might get stronger competition.opposite them..and then so so episodes like Monday's...just won't cut it
I have heard ECO & DR ruminate in recent interviews that they hope the show goes 10 seasons..
Maybe that will happen! .My guess is...it won't....if they have too many dull & paint by numbers episodes like this one..against much stronger competition
NCIS..is into their 12th season..,,but.I do not see NCIS:LA..coming close to that number..because their writers already seemed stuck for plot ideas this season...as this was the 4 th time in S6...either Sam .....G.. pr both of them..were trapped .. held hostage.
One of the things that struck me ...was why would Sam & G agree to meet some guy they never met ...in the middle of nowhere ...with no back up?.
Were Deeks & Kensi too busy having breakfast ...to serve as back up and overwatch..case things went south?
As you mentioned..we could see Sam turning on the electric fence again to catch the fake agent. ..but what I found "funny"...is how often Sam & G..seem to.kill bad guys who could give them valuable info on the cases their investigated...IF that is.....they were ever taken in alive...which sadly for the bad guys wifes and or gf's.....doesn't happen often with the Bromance Brothers!
I wish I could say that I at least loved the Densi scenes and dialogue....alas....it just felt flat and worse...not very funny,,which unfortunately.,..has happened more times than I cared for this season.
In past seasons..you could always count on the Densi stuff to be highly entertaining and one of the highlights of any given episode....,,but for whatever reason....it's more miss than hit with Densi in S6.
I deleted the episode right after I saw it...but I remember there was one scene...when Deeks said "Touche" to something Kensi said to him..
I can't exactly recall what Kensi told Deeks.before he blurted out Touche". but that line from Deeks sounded forced...like.the director of the episode told the writer.."This is what Deeks says to Kensi... a lot...so..make sure to throw one "Touche" moment in there ok?!?!"..
It seems this season...more than any other...that some of the writers don't really have a firm handle or understanding of Deeks & Kensi characters and how they banter back & forth.
All they know for sure is... in previous seasons ..one of the things they say to each other is "Touche!"..so..they put it in episodes...but it feels more like their just throwing a bone to the characters and Densi fans...but they really have no feel for the characters
ECO & DR are very good actors and terrific together..but even they... can't turn plain old mud into diamonds.....
Dave Kalstein is the writer of the next episode and Dave has shown in the past...he knows how to write for Densi...so I have high hopes for that one and looking forward to seeing it.
So sorry that happened. Bummer!
ReplyDeleteHaha - you'll have to rewatch in a few years, huh? Lol. I thought the episode was not as exciting as others this season. So I understand where you're coming from.
ReplyDeleteThanks, bj! Glad I wasn't the only one sucked in to the fake-out & plot twists. I enjoyed that. That pumping iron exchange made me laugh, too. Those two really were like an old married couple this week! I love it!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that tool belt made me think "Really? It just happens to be left there?" So I figured it must have been planted as well. They never addressed it, but I still think it was. :) Thanks for your comments.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't my favorite episode, either. I fell for the plot twists and enjoyed that aspect. But overall I thought the episode wasn't nearly as good as many others we've seen recently. Good point about sweeps season.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you enjoyed the episode and the character moments! The Densi personal moments are always fun - I liked those, too. And it is nice that Densi knows Sam and Callen well enough to know something is wrong when they are late. Fun that you saw the twist coming. I didn't. Good eyes that you caught it ahead! Very astute. :) I also thought Granger's need to be a part of the team was a little strange but sweet. Thanks for your comments.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! Liked it but didn't love it. When so many episodes this season have been fantastic, this one didn't compare to the others. Interesting about the screwdriver - I can see what you mean! Yes, usually Callen would bring that, wouldn't he? The "Great Escape" banter was fun, though. Thanks for your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteI am impressed. Gosh, several people saw the plot twist coming. Good for you! I didn't. Haha. I also liked the banter, though, and Sam and Callen's film references. Thanks for your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteHey Big O! I don't mind if you borrow & change my lines. Yes, this wasn't my favorite episode, either. Many people thought it was a weaker episode (although some others liked it). I didn't realize it had 10.35 million viewers. That's interesting - but good point about making sure those viewers stick around! Yes, Castle has somehow been losing steam this season & NCIS:LA is lucky Blacklist moved to Thursdays. But like you say, you never know when stronger competition may come in. So stepping up the game is always good!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even think about why Sam and G would meet up with the anonymous tipster in the middle of nowhere on their own. Guess that's not too safe! And I never thought about how often they kill the bad guys. (I like your "Bromance Brothers" reference, by the way.)
I also thought some of the Densi stuff wasn't that exciting. I liked all the food stuff but I remember that "touche" moment and it didn't make an impact at all - it was just thrown in. (I also don't remember what the touche was about.) They didn't have that much great, funny banter in this episode like usual, which was a bummer. I also liked your mud into diamonds, reference. Touche! Lol. I'm looking forward to Dave Kalstein's episode next week, too, since he does seem to have a good handle on Densi! Thanks for your comments!
ugh...I just wrote a long reply to your message..and...it just disappeared....anyhoo..Ill try again laters! ..
ReplyDeleteHi Tonya...here is take two of my original rant ..but an edited version.. cus at my age... Its hard to sustain that amount of rabble rousing and ranting..without it taking a toll!! lol
ReplyDeleteIm going to go out on a limb and guess that since this Monday's episode looks to include some great Densi scenes ( he typed ever so hopefully).....that there will be more than 10.35 million viewers.
Unless of course....a lot of folks who watched the show last time...decide to watch something else... ...because the last episode was the TV equivalent of a virtual Sominex pill!..
lol Glad you like my use of the Bromance Brothers to describe Sam & G!
Seems the powers that be this season have rolled the dice and decided to put the show's focus mostly on Sam & G;s characters in S6.....to the exclusion of every other member of the team.
Deeks & Kensi ,,along with their storyline...have been pushed to the sidelines..and reduced to playing 2nd fiddle to the Bromance Brothers.
As for poor Nell & Eric' s characters...Renee & Barrett probably anxiously check the credits every episode... to make sure their still on the show!!
As a Densi fan...their has not been a whole lot to cheer or be happy about in S6
( Sure..we had the fun events in Humbug..but...thats been pretty well about it for Densi.)
Apart from their reduced roles to make any Densi fan feel blue... ...there's been this palpable sense expressed in some corners... that something is definitely off & amiss this year in regards to their usually entertaining banter.
The little Densi we have gotten this season...sounds & looks like...a pale imitation compared to the great stuff we saw from the characters in past.seasons
I just hope...it's not because ECO & DR are getting bored ..because they're not thrilled with their scripts ..and even as good as actors as they are..they are unable to hide their disappointment ...with the way they & their characters have been treated so far in S6.
As for Sam & G..I wonder how long the show runners can keep the episodes centered on them being shot at..kidnapped..trapped...etc..before even their loyal & vocal fans...start to tire of the monotony of their escapades & constant bickering
Sam & G..are like a modern & more muscular version of Laurel & Hardy! It's cute and kinda funny.....in small does..but it becomes ..same ol same ol...to fans like myself..who like other characters more....when they do it..EVERY episode..even in the face of life threatening situations.
If Sam & G... are seen joking around & not looking or sounding at least a little scared or worried about being held hostage or whatever..why should the fans tuning in every week.... worry or care either?
I've read comments from their fans...saying that Sam & G..are the stars and heart of the show....but..even when they are front & center of any given episode...they hardly generate any buzz or excitement...vis a vis comments on boards like this one & others I frequent.
But the two characters that always help to create buzz & a ratings bump more often than not... ..are Deeks & Kensi!
So to tune in this season..and see how the show runners are treating them & their love story....almost like they & it are little more than an after thought to the success & future of the show
,,,,..or worse... as a hindrance...to what they really want to do..which is show more of Sam & G..doing their stick...while blowing stuff up.....is a sad case in my humble opinion...of cutting off one's nose... to spite one's face,
Oh well..Ill be keeping my fingers crossed that Monday's episode pleases loads of Densi fans...and almost as importantly...brings in some big ratings..in hopes..that will help convince the powers that be..that if they want to continue to ignore Densi's storylines & their legion of fans..they do so..at their own peril & folly!
.
