Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man.
Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.
Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.
The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel's world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.
Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company said: "Spider-Man is one of Marvel's great characters, beloved around the world. We're thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building."
"We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man," said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. "This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans."
"Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker's story into the future," added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.
"I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie," said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. "Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel's involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years."
Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

Update #1
a source with knowledge of the situation has confirmed to BuzzFeed News that Andrew Garfield will not play the character moving forward and a new actor will be cast.
Sony Pictures is also moving forward with plans for spin-off movies for Spider-Man villains the Sinister Six and Venom — but the release dates for those films will likely be pushed back to accommodate the new plans for Spider-Man to join the MCU.

Update #2

ReplyDeleteSo this unfortunately means Andrew Garfield is out, right?
ReplyDeleteWoohoo!! I'm legit about to tear up right now you guys. After those terrible reboot movies, now Spider-Man will finally get the justice he deserves again. Welcome to the MCU, Spidey! And this basically confirms that he WILL appear in Civil War! This is basically the most amazing news I have heard all day.
ReplyDeleteYup, just confirmed that Andrew will not be reprising his role and will be recast. http://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/spider-man-joining-marvel-studios-in-deal-with-sony-pictures#.gb9G1ojDP
ReplyDeleteMarvel should go after Fox for Fantastic Four rights.....
ReplyDeleteOMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOMG OMG OMG.
AM I DREAMING?!
AM I?!?!?!?!?!
I THINK I'M DREAMING. OH. MY. GOD.
I cannot stop fanboying right now. Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
YYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS GAGA YOU LOOK SO BEAUTIFUL OH MY GOD YYYAAAAASSSSS
Oh, all the YES to this. That's another property that Marvel needs to bring in the MCU.
ReplyDeleteHuh so if I'm reading the buzzfeed article correctly...not only are we getting a Spider-Man movie...but we're getting Sinister Six and Venom too?
ReplyDeleteHot damn!
Indeed!
ReplyDeletePlus theirs rumors that Marvel is going to reveal various mutants as Inhumans to allow themselves the use of the characters.
Come on Deadpool/Spider-Man movie!
THWIP!!
ReplyDeleteHoooollllllyyyyy shit!!!! I don't believe!! GAH!!!! Hell has officially froze over!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe MCU movie he'll be introduced in has gotta be Civil War right?? And a full Spider-Man movie the year after, awesome!
ReplyDeleteAnd for once reason prevails!!!! OH MY GOD. I must be asleep because this is a dream come true. Best news of the new year so far. And a new Spidey (didn't care for Garfield at all)! In a world first, 2 corporations come together in reason and logic.
ReplyDeleteI think it'll be a post credits sequence personally.
ReplyDeleteI could see a post credit sequence showing Peter getting bitten by the spider with the Spider-Man filming picking up months later (to effectively skip the origin story and get right into the story).
Garfield being released cast is the one and only sad thing about this news, but who cares? Spidey is joining the MCU!!
ReplyDeleteThat would be really smart. I do NOT want ANOTHER origin story.
ReplyDeleteSo I'm kinda hoping this leads to more collaborations between Marvel and Sony (provided Marvel keeps the rights and we don't get another Spider-Man situation).
ReplyDeleteStarting in 2018 we're getting 3 Marvel films a year...what if Sony did the 4th? One Marvel film per season, every 3 months.
Eg say...3 hero films from Marvel and a Villain film from Sony.
Indeed. Nothing matters now, Spidey is where he belongs at last!
ReplyDeleteSad to see Andrew Garfield go, I thought he was a great Spider-Man. But this news is fucking fantastic. So excited to finally have the crossover potential and bring Spider-Man into the Avengers. I guess it depends on whether they have him teenaged or go for a slightly older more experienced Spider-Man. I'm not that keen on another origin story, but if they do keep him teenaged, I'd love to see Logan Lerman in the role. He's been a dream cast of mine for quite some time. As for the TASM cast, I wonder if they'd be willing to cast Andrew Garfield in a different role in the MCU, and perhaps even Sally Field, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, etcetera. TASM1&2 had a great cast, and it would be great to see them continue in the MCU in new roles. Unless they would prefer not to confuse things. Either way, this is great news.
ReplyDeleteSPIDEY COMING HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLiked Andrew Garfield (I loved Emma Stone, but what's that worth now), but I really don't understand why we need to keep rebooting, recasting, re-everythinging. Plus, unless Michael Chabon is going to write the whole thing without the studio being stupid, I'm not interested in anything remotely similar to the Toby McGuire Spiderman years.
ReplyDeleteI really wish that Marvel would finally do the Miles Morales origin but it looks like that's not happening anytime soon :/ In Marvel's defense, they need to do Peter right before moving on.
ReplyDeleteHoly shit, a year ago this would never have happened. Amazing what one badly received Spidey film and one mess of a studio can do.
ReplyDeleteI actually really like Andrew as Spidey so I will miss him in the role.
What I really want is for MCU to tackle Miles Morales now oh and this means they can definitely have Jessica Drew, its always been unclear who owned her rights but I hope this means she turns up in Captain Marvel as Carols BFF.
Same I would much prefer Miles over Peter but I hope this means like come Phase 6 we will get a Kamala Khan, Miles Morales, Young Avengers team up!
ReplyDeleteA dream become reality :D
ReplyDeleteSo there will be no Amazing Spiderman 3, then? Pity, I kinda liked the first two.
ReplyDeleteso are they going to reboot his origin again.........are they going to introduce him as a experience hero or a young hero learning his powers.....prefer a experience hero who retire after 8 years protecting NY......maybe before the events of Iron Man started.......so say 2000-2001 he would 20-21 and now 34 or a young hero who just happen to protect NY when the avengers aren't around
ReplyDeleteOh jesus you just made me smile so much, Lou! That would be so awesome if that happens I can't even. I haven't read the Kamala Khan origin yet (will do soon) but I hear many great things from my friends.
ReplyDeleteSo this now makes me wonder, who should Marvel use as Peters love interest? MJ or Gwen again? Someone different like Betty or Felicia?
ReplyDeleteI'd personally like to see Felicia/Black Cat as his love interest. Someone that can handle themselves out in the field while also having their own stories to tell. While I don't think Black Cat could carry her own film, she could easily show up in multiple titles in a supporting role both in films and on the TV/Netflix shows.
Man in 13 years since the first spiderman came out, they have rebooted it 3 times with a different actor.
ReplyDeleteI agree they have recasted spiderman a few times in only 13 years.
ReplyDeleteA new reboot seem to come out in 4-5 year gaps after the last one.
NOOOO!!!!!
ReplyDeletedoes he really fit though? what do we call him, he's not Gifted or an Inhuman
ReplyDeleteThey do it because of the deal they have to the right to use Spiderman. Sony has to use Spiderman in film or television every 4-5 years (can't remember which, but its one of the two). If they don't, then part of the original contract signed with Marvel states that if the property is not used in 4-5 years, the rights automatically revert back to Marvel. Thus why we keep getting crappy spiderman movies, it's just their way of holding onto the rights.
ReplyDeleteI can kind of see it happening sometime in the future, and if not movies then maybe TV shows aimed more towards the kid/teen market.
ReplyDeleteI mean i will probably be so damn old when it does happen but it would be great. The Ms Marvel comic is so good and I am delighted at how well it has been selling so I can imagine seeing Kamala on the big screen sooner rather than later especially as the Inhumans are now in the MCU.
ReplyDeleteSo not only do we get Spider-Man back, but we're getting him back QUICK!
ReplyDeleteCaptain America Civil War begins filming April 4th, so we'll probably hear casting as soon as the end of the month!
Doesn't Andrew Garfiel reprise the role? (I hope not, MCU could cast better!)
ReplyDeleteNo Buzzfeed mentioned that Andrew Garfield is out
ReplyDeletehttp://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/spider-man-joining-marvel-studios-in-deal-with-sony-pictures#.wrPWqX10R
Or they skip the origin stuff completly and just establish that Spider-Man is around.
ReplyDeleteSpider-Man's unmasking scene from the comic version of Civil War was significant, if they're clever they could use that to introduce the new actor.
well i think dylano'brein should be peter parker
ReplyDeleteI think they'll go for someone older (or at least, older looking).
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit disappointed that Andrew Garfield is out, they could've easily worked his Spider-Man into it and had The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2 as the first phase for the character before introducing him to the MCU.
ReplyDeleteThank god :D
ReplyDeleteMarvel doesn't got the Spiderman rights back, they are still at Sonys. They have a partnership to use him in the MCU and Sony can use the MCU characters in future Spidey moviews.
ReplyDeletethey will likely skip the origin story. Feige mentioned last year that Marvel Studios is done with origin stories and Ant-Man will be the last MCU movie to follow that formular.
ReplyDeleteI knew this was coming ever since the last Spiderman movie got beat by Big Hero 6 at the domestic box office.
ReplyDeleteI expect a morphology gag joke on AOS regarding Coulson's time undercover as a high school principal to help a 'gifted' with spider powers as soon as they can work it in. There's so much potential here. It will be fun.
I just hope to god they don't cast Dylan O' Brien, otherwise I'm interested to see how this plays out.
ReplyDeleteThis will probably all work out well but I'm a little cautious.
ReplyDelete* Marvel Studios since 2008 has turned itself into a fine tuned production company. They know what works and what works well. Kevin Feige is used to being in charge; and he's done a good job. Now with this deal however Sony will still retain creative control over Spider-man. How he looks, what he says and does. Hopefully Sony's unseen executives don't mess around in Feige's kitchen too much.
* Regarding Andrew Garfield or other actors from the Amazing Spider-man movies I'm fairly neutral about. I don't have too many opinions for or against them. I do however hope that having yet another Spider-man in the movies doesn't turn off or confuse the general movie going public.
that is great news...Marvel is the only Studio which could continue this franchise.
ReplyDeleteNot exactly...Marvel is a partnership and is part of the creative team to overhaul Spidey's character. So they are helping Sony but producing the films at Sony not Marvel Studios.
ReplyDeleteSony will still ruin the character by forcing spin-offs with the Sinister Six and Venom. They really need to take some advice from Marvel Studios on how to move forward creatively.
ReplyDeleteFantastic news.
ReplyDeleteNot too happy about this...I'm not a big spiderman fan.
ReplyDeleteI would rather see Miles as well. It would be something very different than what we've seen before. But another part of me wants to see one good Peter Parker movie where he gets to interact with all the other toys in the large Marvel toy box before the Miles Morales years began.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how will they combine Chitauri invasion with Spider-Man. Kinda a plot hole that he wouldn't be involved.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Peter can die in the Infinity Wars? And then Miles takes over. I really don't think it will happen because no way Marvel spent all that money to get Spidey back and then not use Peter for many many movies, but one can dream.
ReplyDeleteI'd actually argue for Sony/Marvel to integrate the Raimi movies into the MCU continuity. Would fit rather splendid to the style and tone. Also Maguire/Franco/Dunst are not teen snoozeys and would fit better to the current line-up
ReplyDeletehopefully
ReplyDeleteActually, this is only the second time he's been recast.
ReplyDeleteActually, this is only the second reboot.
ReplyDeleteI figure after the Fox reboot bombs this year, something will be pulled together for the Fantastic Four to enter the MCU post-Infinity War.
ReplyDeleteI was watching the first one and it just made me sadder that Emma Stone won't be in an Avengers movie. Can you imagine how much fun that would have been?
ReplyDelete
