MOVIES: Captain Marvel - Rumor - Marvel Wants Angelina Jolie To Direct

Feb 8, 2015

Captain Marvel, centering on super-heroine Carol Danvers, is set to become the First Female-centric film from the comic studio, so it makes sense that execs want a woman behind the camera too: Angelina Jolie! An insider reveals that bosses at Disney-owned Marvel were so impressed with Unbroken that they’re offering Angie $20 million for the gig. “Having a female director is a priority for them,” explains the source, adding that Angie is thrilled by the offer. “She never thought she’d be in such huge demand as a director, and to be courted by Marvel after the Sony fiasco is a huge pat on the back.”

  2. This truly surprises me since Broken was such a mess!

She is very hit or miss as a director based on what I've seen of her work...
Land of Milk and Honey was a good job by her, but Broken was just bad. Maybe it was more editing than directing? Maybe?

  3. OK! Magazine is your source? That's a gossip magazine that makes shit up just to get people to read it.

  4. I hope this is true.

  5. Unbroken was met with mostly positive reviews from people.

  6. I thought it was one of the most overrated films of the year along with Gone Girl.

  7. Please no...

Let's just get Michelle McLaren again ;)

  8. Um there's a mistake in this article... "Electra" was the first female-centric from the studio, not this.

  9. Electra was done by Fox, this is Marvel production. Apparently there are differences. Not sure which ones :-P ;-)

  10. THIS IS A JOKE RIGHT?

  11. Though I applaud the decision to want a female director for this, I can't say I'm happy with the choice...

  12. Not sure I trust OK magazine as a source for superhero news. Though I really do hope Marvel get a female director and writer for the project, Carol Danvers deserves to be done right.

  13. I don't... I feel it's more of a popularity based decision and not talent or skill based at all...

  14. Unbroken got some positive buzz, so I guess Marvel is banking on that

  15. Agree.
Maybe she's right for it, but 20M$ just to get her is a marketing campaign.

  16. She doesn't... pre-production will take that long. And prep is a full time job. She won't really be able to work on anything else in meantime. It's why they've started looking for a director now...

  17. Someone gonna make more then her hubby lol

  18. Yeah, i figured that and Idc! I wouldn't want her to be anywhere nearrrr a Marvel movie, let alone direct one. F**K no! Next!!

  19. Well, she's a solid actress, haven't seen any directorial entry of hers yet. So I'll remain as unbiased as i can.

    Why so opposed?

  20. She is. But I don't want her in one. Nope. Not for her. Just like I feel Jada is out of place with Gotham. (And I love both actresses).

  21. I'm all for a female director. But I hope they aren't offering the gig to Angelina Jolie, purely because she's Angelina Jolie. I haven't seen either of her films yet, so I can't judge. But from what I hear, although the films are good, the directing isn't exactly spectacular. But if that's wrong, I'm all for this. Hopefully she has the skill and talent to pull it off.

  22. I haven't seen either of her films yet so I can't weigh in on whether she's the right person for the job or not.

That being said - IF this is true, both DC and Marvel are going for female directors in their first films about female superheroes. Which is cool, except, why don't they ever pick women to direct action movies in general and comic book ones in particular, *unless* they have a female lead?

  23. I cant judge jolie as i havent seen any of her directorial movies yet but i do trust in marvel and kevin feige. They have yet to make a bad director choice for their movies, if anything their choices recently have been inspired. The russos, james gunn?? If they go with jolie ill trust they know what their doing

  24. I just find it odd that the out of left field directorial choices (which were amazing BTW don't get me wrong) are considered "inspired".

But when they are out to pick a female director they go with Angelina Jolie... who is mostly known as an actress... and Jon Void's daughter... and Brad PItt's wife... and is considered a humanitarian.... who recently had a buzzy movie out.

Because clearly there aren't other female directors out there, with more experience than her but less recognisability...

Who knows... She might turn out to do good job. But It's a populist choice, that goes without saying.

  25. And that's fine. But most other people liked it. You have to play the odds. If most people like a movie, and that movie made a profit, then that movie was a success.

  26. I hope this is true. Go for it AJP!!!
