Chicago PD - What Puts You On That Ledge - Review

28 Feb 2015

“You know what puts you on that ledge? You start to forget who’s who.”

Let’s set the scene, shall we? A brooding (more than usual) Voight leans casually against his office door. Halstead walks out of the break room, and Voight asks, “Hey, how’s it going?”

He knows.

Atwater and Ruzek are the absolute worst tech guys, and request they find someone else to handle those duties. Halstead volunteers his friend Mouse, asking Voight if he remembers the case Mouse assisted on previously.

“I remember everything, Jay.”

He knows.

As the case comes together for the search of the missing cop, Voight tells everyone to, “Listen…I don’t like saying things twice,” as he looks at Erin and Jay.

He knows.

“Al, I want you partnered up with Erin on this one.”

HE KNOWS! And Jay knows that he knows…his faces throughout the episode say that much, and it’s hilarious. His facial expressions win as comedic relief of the night.

Well, this will make the case a bit more interesting…

The Narcotics unit needs assitance on an eighteen-month long case in which one of their undercovers, Rick Manning, may have been compromised. As luck would have it, Antonio has a connection from way back with one of the crew members, and takes on an undercover assignment with him and the crew.

At Manning’s house, O and Lindsay find a bag of cash hidden in the fireplace – sketchy for a cop undercover with a narcotics crew. Also in the bag? An apartment key, credit cards, and other very suspicious items. It brings into question Manning’s true loyalty. Regardless, the team has to find Manning, as it seems the crew knows he’s a cop.

Meanwhile Antonio and the crew plan on hitting up Fulton Labs, where Oxycodone abounds. Intelligence sets up the heist (as Antonio is wired) and Halstead and Olinsky pose as security guards. Thanks to some quick and smart thinking by Antonio, Olinsky escapes with a nasty cut on his head, as opposed to leaving in a body bag.

Way out in God knows where, the crew takes Antonio to where they are holding Manning. They task Antonio with killing him and Rick begs and pleads for his life, saying he’s with CPD. Intelligence gets there just in time (surprise) and everyone makes it out alive. Well, all the good guys make it out alive.

Even though he makes it out alive, things aren’t looking so great for Manning. He’s definitely sketchy, and when they bring up the hidden money, it’s pretty clear he’s got something else going on. When Erin breaks the news to Manning’s wife, she says, “Can I give you some advice? Marry a dentist.” No, lady. You shut your mouth!

Alas, the dreaded moment we all knew was coming. Erin is alone in the lockeroom and Jay walks in and says, “Voight knows.”

Halstead still has every intention of keeping the relationship going, telling Erin that he’s on his way to talk to Voight. But unfortunately, Erin stops him, and the scene that unfolds is a lot more emotional than I thought it would be. It’s clear these two have some serious feelings for each other, something I didn’t expect, at least on Erin’s end. I know I should be disappointed that they are done (for now), but I’m okay with it. If anything, it reaffirmed my hope for them – these two clearly are not done for good. In fact, I think we’ve only just begun!

Bro moment! I did enjoy the scene between Mouse and Halstead, even though Jay was bummed because of Erin. Mouse asks Jay if he’s seeing anyone, and seeing Jay say, “I guess I was,” was depressing.

Moment slightly ruined – Erin has a drink at Molly’s with Chicago Fire’s Gabriella Dawson. For those of you who watch Fire, you know (or should know) that Gabby is the LAST person who should be giving relationship advice. “Can you date someone you work with?” Erin asks Gabby. Big mistake, Erin! Don’t listen to her! She walked out on Matt Casey, so clearly she’s not right in the head.

I have to commend the writers (I know I praise them a lot, but they deserve it!), they go with chemistry, where the story takes them, what makes sense, etc. instead of forcing what might have been an original plan. While I love Antonio and would never pass up on an opportunity to see him in the spotlight, Halstead has really taken over that lead position this season. Now with the introduction of Mouse, I think it’s fair to say we’ll be seeing even more of Halstead in that position. No complaints on my end! At least for the time being, Halstead is a more interesting, more compelling character.

With all the talent on this show, it’s easy to forget it began with Voight and Antonio, no one else. It was nice to see Antonio back in the spotlight for an episode. The episode’s final scene took as back to where it all began; Voight and Antonio. This show was founded on their good cop vs. bad cop relationship, and this scene made me realize how far we’ve come. These two did not see eye to eye when the show began but now, they have a bond that strengthens and solidifies this unit together.

Elsewhere…

I love Mouse! I know it’s only been an episode, but I want him on board full time. Mouse is an ex-Ranger, which is how he knows Jay. He’s an expert hacker, as he proves within less than a few seconds, he can hack Voight’s phone. Mouse would be an excellent window into Jay’s military past, one that I’ve been dying to see. And with the way the episode ended, Jay could really use a friend right now.

Voight gives Mouse his approval, but sends him to Platt for hers. Through their quick interview, we learn that Mouse did two tours in Afghanistan, and was medically discharged. When Platt presses the issue, Mouse mentions something about a convoy and being in the lead Humvee with Jay, before he’s unable to continue. Seriously writers, I want to know!

Roman and Burgess handle the case of a squatter who won’t leave a couple’s house. I do not understand how a squatter could in any capacity have rights to someone else’s home, it’s unbelievably messed up.

While the full-on crossovers with Chicago Fire haven’t been stellar, I do love the minor character crossovers we get every now and then. This week, Mouch paid a visit (as he is dating Platt) and asked if she wanted to go with him to a Zumba class. Now, if you don’t watch Fire (or even if you do) and you need a little laughter in your life, do a search for Cruz teaching Zumba. I promise, you won’t regret it. I love that they worked that bit into PD, with Platt responding, “Why? Do you think I’m fat?” being the cherry on top.

With Mouch’s assistance, Roman and Burgess are able to get into the couple’s apartment. Mouch does some looking around, and tugs on a suspicious piece of wiring, only to break the wall to reveal the squatter’s dead wife. Now that’s interesting! Very disturbing, but interesting, unlike the main case of the week.

What did you think of the episode? Do you want Mouse to stick around? What happens next with Jay and Erin?

I want Linstead back ASCP :)

  3. The start of this review had me in fits of laughter!!! I also agree, while I'm sad to see Linstead end for now (I called that this would happened in this episode way back at the end of January), I agree that this is only the start of them. I have a feeling that may work themselves back together by the season finale. Or something will happen in the season finale to one of them and it'll lead into the premiere of season 3.

I really liked Mouse when he appeared last season, so I was really happy to have him in this episode, and of course future episodes. He's definitely a window into Halstead's past, and with Halstead's brother coming into the picture in one of the next episode's, it'll be good to get some more background.

The Mouth/Platt/Zumba scene definitely brought some light to the episode, and it was hilarious. Platt's one-liners are gold!! I also really like anytime Platt and Roman are in a scene together. Also, that dead body in the wall, creepy.

  4. Well guess what? Antonio doesn't get too many moments to be LEAD!!!!!! Antonio gets few episodes about him. So don't bash antonio but to bring halstead up!!!

    ReplyDelete
  5. I do like Halstead, but I agree with what you're saying. I feel like whenever Antonio or Burgess or anyone besides Linstead gets an episode about them, people complain. I get that everyone has their favorites, but the show isn't all about Linstead.

  6. Erin hops into bed with just about anybody as does Burgess. Just waiting for Mauch (Chicago Fire) and Sarge to do the bunny hop.

  7. Another great episode of Chicago PD.

This season each episode has felt like a mini-movie. The drama and cases gave been immersing and the quality has been too notch all season.

  8. As always, LOVE your reviews! I totally agree, Jays facial expressions throughout the episode over Voight knowing we're HILARIOUS! Loved Antonio in this one as well, and the squatter situation with Burgess & Roman turned out to be both morbid and hilarious at the same time!! I actually really enjoy those two as partners. I like that the writers have been trying to incorporate each character as the "central" character of the episodes.

Now onto my least favorite part. I know I knew it was coming but SERIOUSLY!!!?? Ugh, I wanted to cry with Erin at the moment, and drink with Jay afterwards, that was so sad!! I love the writers for PD, but I hate it when Matt Olstead gets involved with it (he helped pen the episodes on Fire that totally killed Dawson & Casey). Ugh he just needs to stay away from PD writing lol. This little Linstead hiatus better last for only a little while, and when they do get back together, the writers better make it EPIC (like "Jay taking a major bullet for Voight" epic). Then keep them together, and have them live happily ever after haha). And yes, Dawson is the LAST person that should be giving realtionship advice!!)

On a side note, totally excited for Mouse to be on the show more!! He rocks!! And I'm totally pumped to find out more about this Humvee accident!! *sigh* well at least we have until March 25th to get over this Linstead heartache. Although to be honest I still won't be over it haha.

  9. Erin has been only with Jay several times and she genuinely cares for him. And that one time the writers were pushing for the crossover romance with severide. And burgess has only been with Ruzek.

  10. Good review! Episode overall was good. I'm glad Antonio centric this episode and it was good for him to see his children. I like Mouse, will give good backstory on Halstead past. I'm a Linstead fan and was sad that they cooled it down but I think something will happen in this last 7 eps that will bring them back together. Olmstead did say they might not be successful in cooling it down. I
Don't feel at all they overshadow the show at all and that the
Sh ow is all about Linstead.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Erin irritates me more with every episode. I'm no fan of Linstead. I'd like shows to show a bit of the reality that men and women are capable of having professional relationships without falling in love. That said, they went there, but now I'm not sure why. Lindsey is all for it if they can keep it a secret. As soon as she realizes Voight knows, she cuts it off. WTF? Is she in high school and only in it to get under Dad's skin? Come on!
I really do like the Voight/Antonio relationship. Antonio has come to realize how far Voight will go for the members of his team. He's come from being very wary of Voight to the point where he told Ruzek at one point that he's learned not to judge other cops. Now it seems there's even some trust growing.

    ReplyDelete
  12. You're right, the writers (or maybe's it's Sophia's acting) are making Erin look like a haughty little bitch. Her smirks and attitude towards her Mom, Nadia, the taser last week and the whole Voight situation make her appear like she thinks she's above it all. They try to show her softer side by having her comfort grieving or distressed relatives but unfortunately that's not enough to balance it out.
Real shame as her relationship[ with Voight is by far my fave part of the show and for me to enjoy that I really need to like both characters.
I wonder if the writers thought we the viewers would see Erin's termination of the relationship so she didn't upset Voight as endearing because it shows she values him and her job over Halstead (when in reality it makes her look like a fickle teenager).

    ReplyDelete
  13. Because the opportunity was there, per Olmstead 99.9% in reality would have gone there if the opportunity came across! And he saw the chemistry between Jesse and Sophia. and Antonio didn't tell Ruzek that he learned not to judge other cops. He told Halstead that when they were at the gym, when Halstead asked him about Voight. Between Erin and Jay, they were going back and forth in telling Voight.

    ReplyDelete
  14. It´s true.. It's been a long time since we got a Voight episode, and Antonio before this last one.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Thank you!

The thing about Linstead is that it's always going to be there. I really like Platt and Roman's scenes too! They are very similar, and I'd love to see them together more.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Don't get me wrong, I love Antonio! And I love his moments in the spotlight. He is a cornerstone this show was founded on. My point was that Halstead has taken over his role this season - not saying it's good or bad, just different. I love Antonio, and I love Halstead.

Voight is the lead, that much has always been true. Atwater doesn't deserve more of the spotlight, because he's boring. Burgess has had several spotlight episode recently.

I'm not bashing Antonio, the only characters I dislike are Burgess and Atwater. But I can even agree that while I don't like Burgess, she's a very compelling character.

I praise the writers because they go with the flow, they go with chemistry, and right now, yes, that's Lindsay and Halstead. Not a darn thing I can do about it, except enjoy it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Antonio is a phenomenal character. I love his feature episodes, my complaint is that I hoped the case would be more interesting. Antonio deserves the best, and I don't feel that he was given that this week.

That being said, as I mentioned in the review, I absolutely loved the Voight/Antonio moments in this episode. It brought us back to where it all started.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Agreed! I watch a lot of shows, and this cast is by far one of my favorites (if not my favorite). They are wonderful. And while I don't always care for the cases, the way they unfold and the way the team works together is always stellar.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thank you!

I'm so happy with the Burgess/Roman pairing. Roman brings something new to the group, and I've really enjoyed his character. I think he challenges Burgess, and while I don't care for her, it's made her a bit more interesting.

It was sad, but I'm not worried about them. They will be just fine!

LOVE Mouse! I'm so excited for him. He's a fantastic character and I hope he becomes a more permanent fixture with the team.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I love Antonio's moments, but I wish we knew more about what exactly is going on with his wife. Are they separated? Divorced?

Erin definitely cares, but I also think she might have commitment issues. I guess we will see! Some people think they overshadow the rest of the cast and right now, yes, they do. Because these writers are wonderful and go where the story is. There was a good portion of last season that had very little Halstead/Lindsay moments, because the story wasn't there at the time. With a cast this large, people need to understand that the focus is going to shift, and it might not shift as quickly as you want.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm going to give Erin a little grace. Yes, she has her moments, but think about her past. If she hadn't been tough as nails, she wouldn't have made it. It can't be easy to tear down those walls you spent so long building up. Voight saved her, so yes, what he says goes.

I agree! Antonio and Voight were at odds at first but I think they make such a great pair. These two are close, and I love it. I want more of it.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think they are divorced, in episode 8 I believe. I think before Asher and the wife came out of the club. He was fighting with Laura on the phone and he said yes I have to accept its over. And I think he told that to Olinsky as well. And well Derek asked on twitter if Laura and Antonio would get back together. He said don't hold your breath. Well yes she does have commitment issues but I can't really blame her. I think maybe them being apart. Erin will see what she could have and maybe want it more. Well that's what I get from derek QnA

    ReplyDelete
  23. I guess I felt you were bragging about halstead being more of a lead this season. Antonio has been given so little this season and I'm annoyed that people are bragging about it cause their fave is getting the lead role. It's not fair.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you! I often wonder if it's the actress, the direction she's getting on the set or the writing that makes her come off as so entitled. It bugs me because I think the male characters have such great qualities, but Lindsey has this "I'm special" vibe. There are so many fantastic female characters on cop shows. I really wish she was one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. She doesn't come off to me as tough. She comes off as entitled and self absorbed. A character with her background could be incredible in terms of the way she relates to others. Lindsey has shown some sympathy for kids and victims, but her attitude toward the people she works with could use some polish and humility.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I personally think maybe it's the actress as the few times I saw her on One Tree Hill she gave off a similar vibe. I think she should channel a slight vulnerability given her background, like the actress who plays Nadia does. I find Nadia so much more likeable.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The show has a happy problem - it's got more than a few characters who excel in the spotlight. Am I happy Halstead is getting his chance? Absolutely. He excels in the spotlight and has an excellent story. But I also enjoy when Antonio and the others get their chance too. Antonio has always been one of my favorites, all the way back before PD began (when he would guest star on Fire).

It's awesome that we all have our favorites, and it's easy with this show, because we have great characters to choose from!

    ReplyDelete
  28. That makes me sad. I really hoped he would work it out with his wife!

We did see a bit of a spark a while back between Antonio and Nadia, I don't think I would mind seeing that play out a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. As a die hard One Tree Hill fan, I have to disagree. She had more than her fair share of vulnerability there.

I think it's the character here. Erin has had to build up walls to survive, and sometimes I think it's easier for her to shut people out and push them away. I hope that part of her character development is that softening a bit. And I think it has...I didn't expect to see as much emotion from her as we did with the breakup.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Could that also be the fact that she's the only woman in the unit? I'm not saying I disagree with you, I'm just trying to figure out what factors could be contributing to her being the way she is.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love Antonio centric episodes and he's had more than his share of leading episodes through season 1 and he's had an episode this season as well. I too like that Halstead is stepping up into a lead character as well. And as we continue through S2, I would like to know more about Halstead past and present.

I didn't see where Antonio would've crossed the line or went over the ledge in this episode.

I'm highly disappointed with Linstead break up. Just brings back way to many memories for me. Similar dialogue/same scene.... I'm not to certain about the for now. How long is for now? I would hate to see them with anyone else, that's for sure. And why on earth would anyone go to GABBY DAWSON for relationship advice? Any advice?

Lol @ your HE KNOWS comments...

Not much to say about this episode

    ReplyDelete
  32. It wasn't a stellar episode. No complaints about Halstead in the spotlight, but when Antonio gets his chance (which is rare this season), he deserves a better story line.

I'm not too disappointed...the breakup won't last. We all know these two will be together again, their story is just getting started. But yeah, she should not be going to Gabby for advice. LAST person.

    ReplyDelete
  33. OMG I just thought that nadia and mouse would make a cute couple!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Agreed! What a great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I think when Antonio killed the one guy with the knife that might have been considered crossing the line because it was kind of cold blooded. That is why the other guy who watched Antonio doing this did not want to talk to Antonio later in the interrogation room. That is what I thought, but I might be wrong.

I so agree about Gaby, she was the last person I thought Lindsay should talk to... I also think the Lindstead break up was too soon, they carved at the slightest suspicion. I was expecting more ....

Mouse character seems to be a nice addition, they needed a tech guy since Sheldons death.

    ReplyDelete
  36. True. I just like the shows and the crossovers and just think there is too much sex for these story lines. Didn't Erin have a fling with a criminal back in the day? I remember an episode where some guy came to the station looking for her. I could be wrong(Which I usually am :))!

I appreciate the help. I'll have to pay closer attention! :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Great review. The locker room scene was definitely emotionally charged! I really liked it, in all its sad glory. But OMG yeah! When I saw Erin with Dawson I was like nooooooooooo!!! Dawson doesn't know a good thing when she sees it...BUt it seemed Erin didn't take what she said too much to heart... hopefully.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thank you!! It was emotional, but I didn't come out of that scene feeling sad. It made me even more hopeful! We are only just beginning with these two.

Dawson needs some help. I hope she turns it around soon.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh yeah, they have so much potential. I think they're definitely my fave pairing on TV these days.

    ReplyDelete
  40. That was like when Erin was in her teen years. She was messed up. Her mom was on drugs, her dad was in jail. She thought she owed Charlie her life because he took care of her but ended up getting her hooked on drugs and that is when Voight saved her. Charlie did return to get Erin to help him with some robbery heist by blackmailing her that she helped her friend cover a murder but she didn't sleep with him during that time. As for the show all she's been with Severide that one time and only with Jay.
