Chicago PD - What Do You Do? - Review

Feb 21, 2015

At this point, I think you all know I’m pretty open and honest with my opinions about this show. So I have to say, I didn’t care for this episode – the only good moments for me were the very brief scenes with the Intelligence Unit. So for those of you that enjoyed the episode and genuinely like Burgess, I'm sorry; you may not enjoy the review. We'll have to agree to disagree.

So apparently Burgess is super predictable with her life, and it all starts with breakfast. When some guy creepily knows everything she ordered and how much it cost (to the cent!), she sets off for the day, clearly determined to break out of the monotony – which can only mean bad things.

Sidenote – Burgess is supposed to only be about 26 and Roman 25?!? False. I can’t accept that.

While Burgess throws a pity party for herself and her montonous life, Roman says, “You really want my honest answer? Who cares!” Thank you, Roman. For saying what I’m thinking. I knew I loved you.

After the pity party, Roman and Burgess stop at a convenient store. Burgess sees something shady go down across the street, so naturally, she breaks protocol. AGAIN. Roman even gives her a chance to call for back-up, you know, do their job, but no. Burgess is determined to break that dang monotony and continues dancing on protocol’s grave.

Burgess’ actions get Roman injured badly and both of them in a sticky situation with not the greatest of guys. Sure, her actions inside are heroic – and I’ll give her this, she’s a quick thinker and great in a sticky situation. My problem with her is that she is continually the cause of the sticky situations.

I don’t have many complaints when it comes to this show, but Burgess is definitely one them (actually, she’s one of only two complaints. The other? Atwater). I’m tired of her bad behavior being rewarded! I’m sorry, she’s applauded by the District and Platt? I’m cringing. Again, yes, her actions kept both her and Roman alive, but it’s her fault they were in there! Oh but don’t worry, Burgess orders a different breakfast the next day so yipee! Whatever.

I realize that Burgess and Roman were the spotlight of the show and that I should have more to say about it, but honestly, I don’t. For the first time watching this show, I was BORED. If it weren’t for this review, I would have fast forwarded through the majority of the episode. So instead, let’s focus on everyone’s favorite Intelligence Unit.

The briefs scenes dedicated to the Intelligence Unit were amazing. I would have enjoyed an entire episode devoted to the a slow day with the Unit hanging around the District over what we got any day. Always.

The team has to go through mandatory taser certification. They aren’t excited about it, but I certainly am! When the trainer tells Voight it’s mandatory for him too, Voight continues to walk away saying, “I’ll just continue tickling perps to death.” Best line of the night, hands down.

Ruzek is preoccupied to the point of annoyance with his lunch date. So of course, he’s volunteered first for tasering! SPAG, guys. SPAG. (Shoulders, Pelvis, Abdomen, Groin). They get Ruzek in the Abs, and he goes down. When Halstead laughs, he ends up volunteering himself next. Lindsay volunteers to do it (yay!) and asks him where he wants it. At this point, I think we all know he’s getting it in the groin.

As predicted, Antonio and the team start chanting for Halstead to get it in the groin, and the look on his face is fantastic. We don’t see it happen, but judging by the ice pack on his groin area for the remainder of the episode, I think it’s safe to say he and Erin might be taking a night off from…Scrabble.

This is great stuff, friends. But the best? That’s got to be Voight and Olinsky talking in Voight’s office, over curly fries, while the rest of the team gets juiced out in the hall.

I am impressed with Halstead and Lindsay. And, kudos to the writers – they are doing a wonderful job handling this relationship. We haven’t gotten a lot, but it seems we get just enough each week to keep everyone excited. This week was no exception.

When you date someone you’re already close friends with, the dynamic is completely different. It’s like skipping the bunch of dates and diving right into the deep end of seriousness. Halstead and Lindsay? Well, they seem kind of serious! Halstead tells Lindsay about a log cabin his grandfather owns in Wisconsin, and how he really wants to retire there, to which Lindsay says, “I’m not living in Northern Wisconsin!” Wow. For a girl with commitment issues, she sure does have some plans in place! Halstead of course jokes back, “I don’t remember asking you…” Guys, these two are going to grow old and retire in Nortern Wisconsin and I want a reunion show to see that happen.

Later, after the tasing, Halstead and Lindsay revisit the Wisconsin topic. He’s still trying to convince her it’s “a nice thought” and with those beautiful eyes, looks at her and says, “And yeah, I meant you and me.” Is it hot in here? Because I’ve melted. Completely. It’s a bold statement, and I couldn’t be happier about it.

I think I’ve decided that Halstead and Lindsay are my favorite couple currently on TV. I dare you to name a better one (just kidding, I’m sure you all have your favorites too. And “favorite” doesn’t equal “best”, so keep that in mind).

Now that we are are roughly two-thirds of the way through this season…

Here’s what I don’t want to see:
  • More episodes where Burgess is in the spotlight. Seriously, one was one too many.
  • Antonio with women who are not his wife. Exception to this, Nadia.
  • Atwater.

I guess it’s hard to think about what you don’t want to see until you see it. Now what I would like to see is easy:
  • The Intelligence Unit. This is a big cast, and taking an entire episode to focus the attention elsewhere is a mistake (at least it was in this case, in my opinion). Even though we are in the second season, we are still getting to know these characters.
  • Cases that span more than one episode, no more neatly wrapped up cases.
  • More personal life backgrounds of our Intelligence team (minus Atwater of course).
  • Justin, Teddy, Olive, Baby Voight (seriously, how has he not been born yet?!), Platt, and Nadia.
  • Halstead and Lindsay. No explanation needed.
What did you think of the episode? Can Burgess in the spotlight successfully carry an episode? What don’t you want to see, and what do you want to see? Remebering SPAG, where would you choose to be tasered?

  1. I agree with every line you wrote. I do love LINSTEAD but I can't watch an entire episode about Ruzek and Burgges. Boring!

  2. I am not a fan of focusing on Burgess either. I really don't know why she gets so much screen time when the show's about the officers in the intel unit. She's gone through more than any of them and it's getting old.

  3. As usual GREAT review as always!! While I too cannot STAND that Burgess got her own episode over someone like Halstead, Voight, Lindsay (although these 3 did get their own episodes this year already....however, the more the merrier!) I have to give mad props to Marina cause that ending scene with her and Patrick was great!
OMG CAN WE JUST ALL AGREE ALREADY THAT LINSTEAD JUST NEEDS TO STAY TOGETHER FOREVER!!?? Their scenes had me dying on the floor in laughter for ages!! Well the taser scene at least. The other was just absolutely adorable. I love how the writers have given us a little bit each week to keep indicating that they're still together (cause honestly, we just would've thought that was the "sexual tension" banter that they've always had haha). I have to say, I'm worried about this next episode because of the so called "cooling off" period that they're supposed to have (again, I don't care that you created the show, Matt Olmstead stay out of the FRICKIN writing for CPD!! It's NOT like Fire, Linstead is NOT Dawesy so GET OVER IT!!). Ahem....anyways, #TeamLinstead !!

  4. LOL thank you someone else gets confused by their ages to! I actually enjoyed the episode to be honest and I don't watch the show religiously or anything. But when they revealed the ages of Roman and Burgess I was like "seriously!? They are in the mid to early twenties. Those two?". Burgess maybe I could see because she has a slim, young face but no offence to the actor who plays Roman he does not look that young. I was guessing at least 30ish or mid 30's. Sorry dude but 25 you aren't at least not to me anyway.

  5. I'm with you on the ages thing - utterly unbelievable. The actor who plays Roman was born in 1975!!! 25 my arse!!!

  6. Actors often play characters younger than themselves. Troian Bellisario is 28 and plays a teenager on PLL.

  7. I liked the episode, Marina and Brian acted fantastically, but..., we've already had a Burgess episode, (and recently too), couldn't this have been more focused on Roman? I knew there would be a time she regretted not accepting Voight's offer to be in intelligence, but so soon?

And yes, Linstead were 110% adorable! That little hand hold in the break room; Talking of living together; That moment when Erin had her tongue between her teeth as she tased Halstead. Swoon!!
There's something special when two friends finally get together, and like you said, the writers have done an amazing job on that front with Linstead.
I'm looking forward to Voight finding out, but I'm also really nervous!!

  8. Aye, I know they do but they're at least meant to look younger and closer to the age they play. Roman looks miles off. Best example of it working for me is Octavia on The 100; the actress is almost 30 but she plays a teenager and looks about 16-18.

  9. I agree... Burgess was reckless and put them in danger. This way, she will never get to retirement. The end DOESN'T justify the means. No one should be rewarded for that. She should at least have called reinforcements after Roman was taken inside.

  10. I agree that Burgess should have called for backup. The age thing drove me crazy, too. And I thought the guy in the diner was super creepy. Does he watch Burgess every morning?

I did like this episode, though. I thought Marina and Brian were amazing, and the writing was great. I thought it was incredibly sad listening to Aubrey (or was it Audrey?). I felt like he wanted to do the right thing and wasn't necessarily a bad guy, but just got caught up with bad people and bad situations. Unfortunately that is very realistic. I give the writers props for telling a story like this.

  11. I'm sorry to disagree a bit, but I actually really liked the episode. Majority one location shoot episodes are very hard to pull off and it takes a lot of phenomenal acting to pull it off. I thought both Burgess and Roman pulled it off.

I also like that Chicago PD gave a supporting character the chance to shine. It is an ensemble cast and it's nice to see everyone get their moment in the spotlight. I find Burgess to be very layered in her character development, so I was engaged as she went from panic, to concern, to caution, to action, to achievement. I'd like to see Roman developed further n future episodes.

It was a great review and I liked reading it. Hopefully, those who are looking forward to Linstead and the Intellignece Unit will be treated to a great episode focused on those characters and aspects of the show to make up for this episode.

  12. Thank you!!

I love Ruzek, and his story apart from Burgess is fantastic. They had great chemistry last season, but I just haven't seen it this year.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I completely agree. I don't want to know more about her, I want to know more about the detectives in the unit!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Thank you!!

And I agree. Nothing against Marina, she's a great actress. I just hate the character she plays.

    Linstead FOREVER. Agreed.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Right? There's just no way! I would guess late 20s for Burgess and early 30s for Roman

    ReplyDelete
  16. We did have a Burgess episode recently, and even worse, it was essentially the same story; she breaks protocol and is rewarded. If they are going to devote so much time to such a mediocre character, at least change up the story.

They are perfect!! I know it can't last forever (at least not right now) and that things will cool off for a while, but I'm enjoying every second of it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Roman. It's just Burgess I have issues with. I'd like to see him in the spotlight on his own.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Don't be sorry! That's what's great about these conversations. I knew writing the review that there would be people reading who love Burgess and loved the episode.

They are great actors, I just have a problem with the continual attention Burgess is getting as a background character on the show. I don't care about her, especially not over the characters of the Intelligence Unit.

Maybe I'll like Burgess in the future. We've all watched shows where we hate a character and end up loving him/her. But she's not there for me yet. Not even close.

  19. Burgess is the worst! I can't stand her since the first episode. I was hoping that she's not gonna survive midseason finale but of course there she is putting Roman's life in danger.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Please no more burgess, her getting shot was more then enough screen time for me,. They can give some screen time to Nadia for a change

    ReplyDelete
  21. I always love reading your reviews. For the most part I usually agree with you. This time I agreed completely: 100% bored during Burgess scenes. How can no one mention the fact that probably nothing would have happened if she hadn't broken protocol AGAIN?! Marina did a great job but the storyline was just uninteresting...
Anyway, I loved the scenes in Intelligence, literally couldn't stop laughing (shouldn't that be an area that Erin would be invested on protecting?! :P) The Linstead scenes were just perfect and yeah, they are my favourite couple on TV right now!

  22. Omg I am glad I started watching this show before going around online to see what it is about. I just started watching in January and if I came here before watching it I would not have even bothered. As a reviewer, that isn't a compliment. I have tried to read this recap but it is hard. Who cares if you don't like Burgess? There is nothing wrong with her. This may be an opinion-based review but isn't good none-the-less at highlighting this show, which is what it should be about. Why should she have to call for backup if she wasn't sure anything was wrong. Taking police away to take care of a potentially non-existent issue is negligent in my opinion. And last I heard you don't need a cop holding your hand when you knock on someone's door. Are any of you cops and truly understand cop rules? And it's not that you have an opinion that upsets me, it's the fact your opinion ruins a potentially good episode review because all you care about is the stupid relationship between Lindsey and halstead. I like this show, I have no issue with anyone, although I believe from the few episodes I've seen so far, it's all about Lindsey. I don't think a show with this amazing of a cast should be too focused on any one character like I've witnessed. Yes maybe burgess could have handled the situations differently but I know she isn't the first or last in a fictional and real life situation to do what she did. Damn. Like I said if I had read this before watching the show I'd be tuning in elsewhere. Just like I will be reading recaps elsewhere (which yes I realize won't bother you any). All I can say is get the hell over the constant constant constant Burgess bashing and the reviews won't be that bad. (It could literally be any character and I'd feel the same, for all you Burgess haters.)

  23. Antonio's son was kidnapped, he was shot twice, he almost lost his sister, he almost lost his job, he and his wife are getting a divorce.

I don't think Kim had been through more than anyone, actually.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Great review! I agree-- I felt the writers really missed with Burgess' actions this week. I didn't understand why she wouldn't run to the gas station to call for help-- before going after Roman. The station was like a half a block away. It also seemed odd that they would give up their guns when it was 2 on 1. I would like to see more scenes that give the character's backstory. I think it would be cool if the team went on a stakeout and the majority of the episode was them waiting around and interacting with each other.

  25. I would hate to make it about race but I found the message of this episode quite moving. Living in Chicago and and what was said about changing Chicago is a message I believe the show needed to tell and needed to be heard. And I like that kim was the one to tell it. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode and it's lesson to the high crime communities regardless of color.
