Nah, they've been pretty good with keeping the characters close to the legends. Ragnar's death is a very specific event well documented in the sagas. It will happen but not for awhile yet, his boys need to grow up a bit more first.
As far as I know, Vikings is in absolutely no danger of being canceled. It's a huge hit for History Channel that's gotten early renewal within a couple of episodes each season.
There's a couple of key events that need to happen before Ragnar goes to Valhalla. Once Bjorn fullfills his part of the Seer's prophecy regarding Ragnar's sons and journeys to the "sea that has no tide" then it's time to prepare for Ragnar's demise.
