Poll I'd like to see: WTF is up with the shipping obsession, and why are monsters, rapists, abusers, murderers or would-be murderers (e.g. Rumpelstiltskin, Chuck Bass, Spike, Damon Salvatore, Klaus Mikaelson, Daniel Grayson) suddenly romantic heroes and often "shipped" with the women they've abused or tried to kill?
OF course I am. I just... can't understand why Horowitz and Kitsis didn't make them as a OTP. They had such big chemistry in s02e12 and this would bring back Meghan Ory to the show. Everyone would be happy.
What I like the most is that to the question about the ONE + ALL TIME most people gave a list. I hope they are a little more definitive when they pick their couple. ("You are my only one. Oh, and these ones too...")

There are other couples I ship but these are my OTPs.
Jane and Lisbon from The Mentalist. I cried when Jane finally confessed his love and kissed Lisbon in last season finale, I'd been waiting for that moment for years ;______;
I'm not watching any of these shows at the moment but I am CURRENTLY watching X-Files and Twin Peaks, so my answers are Mulder/Scully and me/Agent Dale Cooper
Have you considered stopping the polls for a while. I understand they are randomly picked but they really are getting to be redundant and yes, I understand I can ignore them and frequently do so now. The only reason I clicked on this one was because I wanted to see if I was the only one who didn't know what "OTP" meant. Not going to bother to vote.
No, why would we stop posting polls? Just because you don't like them? 1000's of people every day enjoy the User Submitted Daily polls and gives a great way for people to have their polls posted on the site.
I don't understand why you would want to stop that?
I've already seen a lot of poll submissions from the above Alex Forrest. so "the stop-complaining-and-submit a poll yourself argument" really doesn't apply here. Many of us submit polls, but it doesn't mean they'll get randomly selected because so many polls are submitted every day. And with the sudden surge in new shipping groups this year, I think that the non-couples (or anti-couples) polls are just getting diluted more and more. Maybe they need to just eliminate some of the redundant polls or break up questions into several groups based on some common trait and then make the random selection from a different group each day.
Tons of people submit non-shipping polls everyday. They just don't get selected because there are so many poll submissions. So does it really matter if this one person specifically submitted one or not?
I know all that. It matters because if this one person doesn't like ships polls then they should submit their own poll. If you don't like something try to change it! And for the record non-shipping polls get selected but not as much because people submit shipping polls more frequently so their chances of being selected are higher; And that's the point of my question. I'm not attacking anyone in particular but there are a lot of people feeling annoyed by shipping polls; so instead of complaining they need to submit their own polls to lower the shipping polls chances. "Be the change you want to see in the world"
My point is that a lot of people who are complaining do actually submit polls, because I recognize their names as people who have submitted polls, so to make the baseline assumption that they don't submit any is not really fair. .

Did this person not say "Here's a poll I'd like to see"? This person could easily submit a poll that poses a variety of possible reasons why us dumb ol crazy fangirls like ships they find problematic. For example:
1. We're all 14-yo girls and ridiculous. 2. We're all thirsty old ladies and ridiculous. 3. Daddy didn't love us enough. 4. Daddy loved us too much in the wrong way. 5. We're fat lol 6.
However, if someone sincerely wants to reduce the # of shipper polls picked, the "submit your own poll" comment just becomes "submit many many more of your own polls" and "tell your likeminded friends to also submit many many non shipper polls."
But if the vast majority of polls submitted are shipper polls that means that the vast majority of interest is in those polls, so the market is voting.
I have a feeling that if the selection algorithm weights anything, it weights polls that are like polls that have gotten heavy responses in the past. If so, that would indicate shipper polls get more responses. Again, the market is voting.
I love the daily polls. When I see ones like this, I just scroll the posts and don't vote. I don't like whatever this OTP mess is or couple/shipping wars but those fans probably don't like my love of action and dystopian shows either.
So totally Jane and Lisbon (The Mentalist) But it was a hard pick between those two and Castle and Beckett... :-( I also ship thousands of other ships that are probably not exactly canon but who cares?
Not to the same level as Regina but Hook also wasn't innocent yet people ship for him and Emma, People seem to ship for the Anti Hero characters and relationships.
I agree Hook isn't innocent but compared to all the other villains and what they've done it's miniscule. To my knowledge, I don't think Hook's ever killed anyone. He's a pirate. Pillage, plunder, steal other men's women sure...the only person he's ever tried to kill is Rumple and quite honestly do you blame him? I like Hook and Emma (yes I ship them) however, when looking at any character I do try to look at both sides so to anyone who reads this please don't respond with something like (oh you're just defending him cuz he's part of your ship) because that's not the case. Every character has their plus and minuses...but yet when it comes to love they try and make themselves better for the other person which could lead to good outcomes like Regina giving up evil for Henry and Robin, Hook giving up his ship (and semi-pirate-ness) for Emma, or bad outcomes like Rumple wanting to get power to give Belle the life he thought she deserved.
My all time favourite tv couple is Delena, they are the best, they are the mother dragon of all ships and win awards of any kind. So proud of my ship :)
With Hook he didnt devastate an entire population and randomly kill ppl left right and center. And also there is an ACTUAL build up in narrative for Emma and Hook which general viewers and ppl who watch and ship like and have been invested in. And just how Emma and Hook connect, most ppl i assume LIKE and INVEST in what they follow and understand in a show. Not just crack ship (which is nothing wrong with that, BUT its when it goes OTT and overlooking canon couple and canon facts and build up thats when it gets abit too much when ppl do that) :)
OUAT is a show and esp their MAIN FOUR COUPLE are designed for each other. They arent randomly put together... but actually designed to fit each other. Snow/Charming. Rumple/Belle, Robin/Regina and Emma/Hook (Emma's romance was always going to be someone who FITS her and designed for her... written exactly how he should be to FIT her, her needs, wants and the things she has lacked in her life esp in heartbreak and someone who loves her to put her first, choose her, come back to her, believes in her, fights for her and by her side, and heals her and someone she lets in, comfortable with - thats how Emma's aspect is looked up as she has been so walled up and guarded and then there is a man who loves her unconditionally and waits for her until she is ready... and her choice.
Delena. It's always going to be Delena. They've had some amazing moments. Olicity by a very very close second. (Sorry but I've been with Delena longest) but Delena and Olicity are my absolute OTPS!!!
My other ships on this poll.....B&B though I will forever be pissed about how they got together and we never saw it!! That was just wrong on so many levels.

And lastly on this poll, Jesnick. They were adorable and funny but I'm not gonna lie, I'm loving Jess with Ryan.
I have no problem with shipping in and of itself. I've got my favorite pairings on the shows I watch, too (though most of the ones I watch tend to never show up in these polls :p, and I have no opinion on CW ships because I don't watch the CW). It's a regular, popular part of fandom, so it's going to be discussed and debated every now and again, and if one doesn't like shipping polls, well, they don't have to read them. But I won't argue that the demanding attitude some shippers have can be very obnoxious, especially when it gets to the point where they're yelling at the showrunners and writers and being all, "Why aren't you making this canon yet?!", as though they broke some promise to them or something, like their pairings becoming canon is something they're entitled to. And from what I've heard about the more problematic ships out there, I too am a little curious as to why they hold such appeal. My favorite pairings involve guys who are gentlemen, and respectful towards women. I much prefer the good guys. *Shrugs*
New spoilers for the Super Bowl episode say that there are going to be "great answers" regarding Liz parents, the fire and how Liz is connected to Red. I think that pretty much squashes any remaining theories that he is the father.
While I do ship some pretty bad guys/girls with others the majority of people I ship are good people and I prefer the good people. So I don't understand the draw to evil/bad guy/girl character ships either. It does happen, but it's not a rule.
I'm also tired of hearing people say the "good guys" are boring. What is it about a person murdering people that makes fans drool over them exactly? I don't find murder, etc. sexy.

Someone who fights for family, friends, love, and humanity though, now that I find sexy. Amen to this. And yeah, bad boys may be "exciting", but there IS a reason they're called bad boys. I know the redemption factor can play a role, too, the whole, "Oh, I can change them!" mindset...and in fiction, that can work, 'cause it's fiction and the rules can change. But at the same time, so often fans want to take away what makes the villain a villain in the process and then it warps things even more. Add to that that going into a relationship hoping to change the person you're with rarely ever works in the best of circumstances, when it comes to a bad guy, it's going to be next to impossible. Not to mention the fact that changing someone completely invalidates what made you like them in the first place. And, like you said, murder isn't sexy. Rape isn't sexy. Obviously, I know it's fiction, of course, and I know that what people like in fiction doesn't always reflect their own real life tastes and viewpoints (I'd certainly HOPE it wouldn't, anyway!). But still, it is strange that good guys are considered "boring" while murderers, rapists, and abusers are considered "hot".
Oliver/Felicity followed by Castle/Beckett and Will/Mac. Everyone else I don't know or don't like (especially Sheldon/Amy, what a horrible couple). Kind of uncommon for me, usually I'm a huge shipper and find in any show someone I can ship.
What was the point of this comment? ignorant? some ppl like and because as far as I am seeing they are a ROMANTIC COUPLE on the show! and the other 3 couples on the show with them.
I love Emma and Hook :) just letting you know its not big mystery to what i am seeing and following on-screen, scenes wise and narrative and romantic scenes and such, peace out! :)
My favorites right now are Burgess/Rusek, Kensi/Deeks, and Felicity/Oliver. There are ton of other couples I like or have liked, but those are who I'm loving right now.
Am I not allowed to have an opinion? Guess not, according to Hook/CS fans. But hey, what else is new. No surprise, given the reputation some of you guys have in fandom.
I'm a long time OUAT fan & I've never really seen the appeal these two have. Maybe it's cause Emma had a new 'potential' bf every bloody half season for the first 3 seasons. And how convenient of you to forget how everybody was raving about Emma & the Sheriff just a short while ago, how they were their OTP & how much they wish he was back to romance up Emma!
He was only in about 7 episodes of season 1 like 4 years ago. Who was just meant to be in for that amount of episodes even before the show started. Also Graham was a hope, a hope that she felt with him, and then felt with Hook. Which has been said so many times. Emma's ONLY love interest came in season 2 which was build upon, as we know Hook was ALWAYS wanted. :)
Lindsay and Halstead (Chicago PD). Tied with Oliver and Felicity (Arrow) but I had to get Linstead in there because it wasn't on the list. I've noticed tons of fans are both Olicity and Linstead shippers and I wonder why. Maybe it's that they both pair a hot badass hero with a relatable smart kickass woman.
To see all this votes for Jane and Lisbon make me truly happy as not only we fans love them so much as a couple. And on Wednesday we will get our Happy End, even if I will be very sad, to see the best series ever, go :(

Rumple/Belle, Robin/Regina and Emma/Hook (Emma's romance was always going to be someone who FITS her and designed for her... written exactly how he should be to FIT her, her needs, wants and the things she has lacked in her life esp in heartbreak and someone who loves her to put her first, choose her, come back to her, believes in her, fights for her and by her side, and heals her and someone she lets in, comfortable with - thats how Emma's aspect is looked up as she has been so walled up and guarded and then there is a man who loves her unconditionally and waits for her until she is ready... and her choice.

I have no problem with shipping in and of itself. I've got my favorite pairings on the shows I watch, too (though most of the ones I watch tend to never show up in these polls :p, and I have no opinion on CW ships because I don't watch the CW). It's a regular, popular part of fandom, so it's going to be discussed and debated every now and again, and if one doesn't like shipping polls, well, they don't have to read them.
ReplyDeleteBut I won't argue that the demanding attitude some shippers have can be very obnoxious, especially when it gets to the point where they're yelling at the showrunners and writers and being all, "Why aren't you making this canon yet?!", as though they broke some promise to them or something, like their pairings becoming canon is something they're entitled to. And from what I've heard about the more problematic ships out there, I too am a little curious as to why they hold such appeal. My favorite pairings involve guys who are gentlemen, and respectful towards women. I much prefer the good guys. *Shrugs*

ReplyDeleteNew spoilers for the Super Bowl episode say that there are going to be "great answers" regarding Liz parents, the fire and how Liz is connected to Red. I think that pretty much squashes any remaining theories that he is the father.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do ship some pretty bad guys/girls with others the majority of people I ship are good people and I prefer the good people. So I don't understand the draw to evil/bad guy/girl character ships either. It does happen, but it's not a rule.

And yeah, bad boys may be "exciting", but there IS a reason they're called bad boys. I know the redemption factor can play a role, too, the whole, "Oh, I can change them!" mindset...and in fiction, that can work, 'cause it's fiction and the rules can change. But at the same time, so often fans want to take away what makes the villain a villain in the process and then it warps things even more. Add to that that going into a relationship hoping to change the person you're with rarely ever works in the best of circumstances, when it comes to a bad guy, it's going to be next to impossible. Not to mention the fact that changing someone completely invalidates what made you like them in the first place.
And, like you said, murder isn't sexy. Rape isn't sexy. Obviously, I know it's fiction, of course, and I know that what people like in fiction doesn't always reflect their own real life tastes and viewpoints (I'd certainly HOPE it wouldn't, anyway!). But still, it is strange that good guys are considered "boring" while murderers, rapists, and abusers are considered "hot".

ReplyDeleteI'm a long time OUAT fan & I've never really seen the appeal these two have. Maybe it's cause Emma had a new 'potential' bf every bloody half season for the first 3 seasons. And how convenient of you to forget how everybody was raving about Emma & the Sheriff just a short while ago, how they were their OTP & how much they wish he was back to romance up Emma!
ReplyDeleteHe was only in about 7 episodes of season 1 like 4 years ago. Who was just meant to be in for that amount of episodes even before the show started. Also Graham was a hope, a hope that she felt with him, and then felt with Hook. Which has been said so many times. Emma's ONLY love interest came in season 2 which was build upon, as we know Hook was ALWAYS wanted. :)

I've noticed tons of fans are both Olicity and Linstead shippers and I wonder why. Maybe it's that they both pair a hot badass hero with a relatable smart kickass woman.
