With seven days until TVD‘s glorious return, TVLine caught up with executive producer Julie Plec for seven teases about what’s to come. Think of this interview as your personal vampire-themed Advent calendar — or you can just read all the answers in one sitting. This is America.
TVLINE | Kai seems to be the only obstacle standing between Damon and Elena at the moment. Will any additional problems arise?
There are a lot of emotional obstacles, the little details. Can Elena get right with her feelings for him? Is she falling in love with him all over again? As they fight the bad guys, deal with loss and grief, character exits, that kind of thing … do they stay strong, or do they drift apart? I’d really like to see them make it and be happy for a little while.
TVLINE | We’re loving Kai. How long will he stick around?
That’s the problem when you have an actor who’s so great and who the audience responds to as a villain. You have to take stock: Is there more that I can do with this character outside of his run as this year’s villain? If so, you have to come up with the right way to do it, and if not, you have to let the heroes get the win over the villain. Every day, we talk about Kai, and we debate it. It’s an ongoing conversation.
TVLINE | Who has a better chance of surviving: Sheriff Forbes or Steroline?
[Laughs] I think that both of them have some pretty extreme hurdles to cross. Both story lines are going to be incredibly emotional, no matter how much you look at it.
TVLINE | We know Stefan will be helping Caroline save her mom. Will that bring them closer together?
At first, it’s going to sure up their friendship and bring up more of those romantic questions. But I can’t guarantee there won’t be a stumbling block or two that prevents them from seeing things clearly.
TVLINE | Do you have a time frame for Bonnie’s return from 1994? What will her biggest adjustments be?
We can expect it by the end of the run of this next chapter, which is approximately Episodes 11 to 15. It changes her forever. She’s been to hell and back, so to speak, and she’s had to do a lot of it on her own. Anyone who goes through an experience that isolating and that lonely isn’t going to come back ready to dive back into their old life. We’ll see her try to find her way and heal herself. We’ll see if her friendship with Damon is true, and if he’s someone who can help her heal.

They really need to kill off Kai at the end of the season.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe they're going to kill off a major character - they never do that on this show.
It could always be Jeremy since he's leaving. But yeh death means nothing ecept a temporary reprieve on this show. On another note, as I prefer Kai to Enzo. They should not add anyone else to the cast because they can't seem to write well for everyone so they become useless. I doub't they would remove half the cast for that reason, but still...
ReplyDeleteTVD has a bad habit of letting villains overstay their welcome so I wholeheartedly agree. When this season is done Kai should be done too.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to wonder if Jeremy is really going to art school. That detail might have changed. JP said she'd like to see Delena together and happy "for a little while." I'm fine with any time limit. I don't care about the Steroline stuff. It's sad, I would have been glad to see them together if I wasn't already tired of hearing about it.

ReplyDeleteLovely teases overall. Kai and Enzo need to go by seasons end, Kai cause they would ruin him by keeping him and Enzo cause they ruined him already by staying. Tgey are bad bad boys and their repetitive stories aren't favoring them. And no they aren't redeemable.
Steroline will be quite the heartbreaker along the way. It'll be tough to let the Sheriff go.

ReplyDeleteI hope so. It would be very amusing to me to see Ric get jealous that his BFF status with Damon may be challenged by Bonnie... but that's not the way TVD rolls so that won't happen.
Delena storyline-Couldn't care less.

Kai-They are still contemplating,that doesn't sound good at all!I hope he doesn't overstay his welcome!No matter how much i'm enjoying his character,i still want him gone/killed by the end of this season.
Steroline-Yes for deeper friendship,a big NO for romance.It WILL end badly for them if they go there & i know they will.
Enzo-Needs better storyline,what was the point in making him a series regular again?I personally feel bad for michael malarkey.Great actor,minimal role.
My death wish list by the season end-Kai,Tyler,Matt(not happening),Jo,Luke,Elena.
When they brought back Enzo & Alaric at the end of Season 5 the actors signed a two-year contract so I think Enzo & Alaric will both be sicking around for Season 7.

ReplyDeleteBonnie and Damon's friendship, along with Kai is the best thing to happen to TVD this season. I really really hope their friendship proves to be strong. With Jeremy leaving, Elena and Caroline not caring enough for Bonnie, she needs a true friend on her side.
Besides this Sarah Salvatore storyline got me really interested. Don't care about Enzo's snooping, but Damon needs to find out asap...It's been a long time since we got a Salvatore-related storyline that doesn't revolve around a love interest and I want both Salvatores dealing with it.
God, JP makes me mad sometimes. I mean really. Let Elena kiss Damon so she can get her freaking memories back already! This is so annoying. And they better not kill Kai off too quickly. I'll be highly upset, he's the second person I'm enjoying since this season started. I'd like him to remain the "big bad" for the whole season.
ReplyDeleteSteroline! Stefan will be there for her as a friend, for as long as she needs, and once she's ready, they can talk about it. I'm so glad that Liz's situation will bring them closer together, and they can make up as friends. I loved their arguing, but god do I miss their cute friendly moments! WHEN they finally get together it'll be soooo cuteeeee. I'm hoping Liz can give Care some words of wisdom..Stefan too. I can't wait to see their flashbacks as kids, it'll be adorable. Ohhhh!!! I just had a thought, i can't believe i didn't think about this before. WHAT IF.....Caroline gave Liz a dream??? Omg! I would love that. If Stefan taught her how to do it, and she gave her mom a final happy dream. Omg i would totally cry.
Bonnie- As long as she gets to break up with Jeremy before he leaves I'm good. And I'd like her to have more scenes with Kai.

ReplyDeleteI love how a really good actor can take a role in his teeth and run with it, surprising everybody who had certain ideas about how his character would play out. Of all the characters who have been on TVD, Kai is the one who has scared me - REALLY scared me - the most. He's not just a "bad boy", he's a true sociopath who has no problem with torturing and killing and that baby face just adds to his scariness. Yet at the same time, I love watching him. What great casting! I don't think it would be true to Kai's warped character to have him somehow redeemed, even though there have been hints of emotional hurt in his past that probably played some part in making him the person he is. But that's the problem right there - now he is who and what he is, and he's a danger to everyone around him. I know there have been questionable (i.e. unbelievable) character manipulations on TVD in the past and I've chosen to roll with them, but making Kai less of a villain is one I would not be able to swallow. I'm a devoted fan of TVD but I can only suspend my disbelief so far! Bravo Kai, but I think you have to go away - far away.
ReplyDeleteI really hope the friendship between Damon and Bonnie is 'real' as JP put it, that is what I like to see: Damon helping Bonnie. Hope it is as entertaining as when Elena shut out her emotion, ''show a little restraint', those were some funny moments.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't care less about Kai, don't get the hype. My other favorite is Enzo, could listen to him all day, so I hope he gets over his hate for Stefan soon. He needs a new BFF though, as Damon has his hands full, my choice would be Caroline but I guess I am alone with his opinion.
Idk, there's soo many options. I would probably like it to be where it was a time the Forbes family was happiest. Bill, Liz, and Caroline. That's it. Maybe at the beach or something, idk. But that could be a nice picture. Overstay his welcome? You mean like Enzo, Silas, Katherine, Professor Shane, Dr. Wes, Liv? pish posh...whatever would make you think that? Haha....Kai will "overstay his welcome" if he stays longer than this season.

ReplyDeleteIt might be amusing, but the two friendships should be entirely different therefore not a cause for jealousy on Ric's part. At least I hope not; I would hate to see Ric be that insecure and petty. I'm so looking forward to seeing how Bonnie and Damon will relate to each other in the present. Each of them has wanted to - and tried - to kill each other in the past. Although one of Damon's finest moments was helping Bonnie survive when she was going to sacrifice herself to kill Ric/Klaus. To see a new and better relationship starting to happen between these two because of their shared experiences in 1994 has been one of the highlights of this season for me.
ReplyDeleteI believe you've really over-thought this scenario. If the show were to address this it would be purely for laughs. It would be nothing more than a few punchlines and a few amusing observations over the course of an episode and nothing more. It would never be meant to be taken seriously by the audience or the characters.
