Last season, The Vampire Diaries‘ Paul Wesley took a seat behind the camera for his directorial debut with “Resident Evil,” after which he let it slip that he had cut a shirtless Stefan scene. Now in season six, Wesley has returned to the director’s chair for this week’s “Woke Up With a Monster.” And although he might be more comfortable in his directorial role this time around, one thing hasn’t changed: He’s still cutting shirtless scenes.
Wesley talked to EW about his experience directing the episode, what fans can expect, and that shirtless moment we’ll never see.
EW: Did you find that directing was easier the second time around?
PAUL WESLEY: It was easier on me mentally. I’ll tell you why else it was easier: I literally had no locations. My entire episode was indoors, on the studio, so I didn’t have to worry about weather, I didn’t have to worry about the sun going down. It’s a rare, rare thing. But apart from the logistics of it, I was much more comfortable in the director chair. I really trusted the process and it was a really pleasurable experience. Not that the other one wasn’t; it just was like I felt more comfortable in my own skin, in a way.
Going into it, was there anything you knew you wanted to do differently from your first experience with directing?
I definitely let go of some control, and by that I mean you just let people do their jobs. And not that I didn’t do that on the last one—it’s just that I really wanted everything to go so well that I almost was mentally psyching myself out. [But] on this one I was like, “I know how this is going to go, I know what’s going to happen, I know what I’m going to do, and I know what everyone else is capable of, so I’m going to trust the process.” Don’t get me wrong, there’s still bumps in the road, but that comes with the job.
In this episode, we know Kai is hiding Elena. Did that mystical element present a challenge for you?
This episode in my opinion is a much more grounded episode. It’s actually not as mystical. There’s not a lot of mythology in my episode; it’s really about the more tender moments. The best and most exciting moments are the moments when we step away from all of that and we really get down to some beautiful interaction between two characters that is really intimate. What I love about my episode is that it is fast-paced, fast-paced, fast-paced, exciting, entertaining, and then it sort of slows down and there’s this moment of real tenderness, which I think is so important on our show. It’s all about the people and there’s some really beautiful moments and amazing performances. I’m excited about that interesting sort of juxtaposition.
Speaking of those moments, we know that Stefan and Caroline are headed to North Carolina. But Stefan is also secretly going to see Sarah Salvatore, so is he still being a good friend to Caroline?
Yeah, for sure. He really cares about her. He really loves her. That’s not even a question. That’s never really something that he doubts. But it’s true; in the story they go there together, but then they kind of separate. They kind of go their own ways to do their own things and investigate their own personal interests.
With Sarah coming into present day, how will seeing her affect Stefan?
I don’t really know what their relationship is like. We haven’t explored it a hell of a lot, but for me—it sounds a little weird since they look like they’re the same age—but it’s almost like his little daughter that he’s proud of. It’s like his little project. It’s almost like he’s her godfather. [He’s] like, “Okay, I’m going to look out for this kid.”

Great Interview!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the show coming back.
I love paul! I got to see him in person last weekend in newyork! Hes so beautiful and charming. One of the best days of my life 😁
ReplyDeleteIf nothing mystical will happen, then what does Kai have Elena for? Maybe he just wants someone to look at while he eats dinner. He is crazy. From this article, it looks like the CW has been hyping up too much the idea of Elena being in Kai's "clutches." Either he'll let her go after a while, someone will get her away from him, or she'll negotiate her own release. I'm interested in the "tender moments." It looks like there will be more than one, and between more than one pair of characters.
ReplyDeleteAlthough i'm not much a fan of his directorial debut last season,i'm happy for him.He definitely seems more interested being behind the camera than in front of it.Can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI didn't care for his debut last season. But since he seems more comfortable now, and seems a little bit "different excited" than his first time, I guess I'm looking forward to it. I am proud of Paul. Now I'm not going to read this whole article, but just from this here, alone, the interviewer is really annoying. What is this fixation on his damn shirtless scenes?? See I can tell they don't watch this show. First when the last time you saw Stefan Salvatore shirtless?? I mean REALLY shirtless?? Two: Paul is lazy, he hates working out, he loathed the gym. That is no secret as he's shared that over the years time and time again. Three: he also has a disorder so his weight fluctuates...leave Paul alone! He doesn't want to take his shirt off, then he doesn't have to take it off.
ReplyDeleteHe was in NY last week?? Where the hell was I? Why was he in NY??
ReplyDeleteBut why would stefan fans would miss out on seeing him shirtless. The focus is/should be a good script,i admit but this show is also about sexy vampires. We get reminded every episode how hot ian/damon is,why not him?I remember seeing him shirtless pretty much every episode in the 1st season,he definitely didn't have any problem showing his body and the season was creatively on fire back then.Sometimes,i feel like they're not even vampires, when was the last time he showed fangs and drank blood?
ReplyDeleteIf they were real Stefan fans then they would know the details regarding this "issue" if that's what they wanna call it. This interviewer is just annoying. That was season 1, When he USED TO have the best abs out of the cast. (His words and the cast words) we're in season 6, and many fans have become very used to Paul not taking off his shirt. Besides, that was also the first season. Any actor/actress are going to be their best looking in their first season. B/c duh, "hot sexy scenes" are always written in a new show. So of course he wouldn't have a problem with it. The last time iI can even remember Paul taking off his shirt, still w/o showing his body, was when he slept with Rebekah. And that's just from the top of my head.
ReplyDeleteAs far as when Stefan drank blood last, I'd say season 4. Last time he wanted to kill/drink something was last season.
This character has become so pathetic & lame,i can't believe it sometimes.I used to have such a man-crush on stefan & now i could care less whether he gets off the show or not!So weird!
ReplyDeleteyeah he was in soho at the apple store for a Q&A for his new movie Amira and Sam. it was free so I went. :)
ReplyDeleteIT WAS FREE???!!! Wtf!!! Ughhhh!!!
ReplyDeleteDid you meet him? How was it? Lol
It happens sometimes. I never cared for Stefan (Paul I like, he's funny) but he's had his moments. I was just discussing season 7 With a friend two days ago, (contracts, etc etc). And we both said if they started the season off w/o Stefan, leaving him never to return, we wouldn't like that. We need all three leads. And since Paul has been the most reluctant, b/c he wants to explore new things, hence directing, I believe if TPTB keep making deals for him to direct episodes here and there, (and raise his paycheck) he'll have no problem signing.
ReplyDeleteTPTB?
ReplyDeleteThe Powers That Be.
ReplyDeleteI don't see it. Not when he's acting. But he's made his "disinterest" shown during a lot of events or interviews. Nina's multitasking so she's good. She's doing film as well as TVD.
ReplyDeleteAnyways I g2g.(Sorry to cut you off) The Flash is coming on in 11 min I gotta prep. Lol (Food, snacks, drink, etc).
Have fun!
ReplyDeleteI waited 2 hrs for him lol and there was a lot of young girls there. No one got to hug him but i stood in front of the stage close to him at the end.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!! Hell I would've waited that long too. Just as long as I had my headphones to tune out the young girls. Lol
ReplyDeleteI think the last time he drank blood was Season 5 when he drank from Jessie (while having memory-loss). I just watched that episode last weekend with a friend who has to catch up
ReplyDeletei know, right? He is such a cutie. I saw him in Person twice and he was so sweet both times.
ReplyDeleteI also would not be happy without the three current leads. Each of them has their strengths and weaknesses (don't we all?) but together, the sum really is greater than its parts, as the saying goes. As far as Paul being shirtless, the time I will always remember is Season 1 when he was captured by the tomb vampires and strung up shirtless with vervain soaked ropes. He was gorgeous; as one fan told him at the time, "best abs ever"!
ReplyDeleteYes he's very cute 😄
ReplyDeleteYeahhh that's right. lol nice.
