The Originals - Brotherhood of the Damned - Review

This week’s episode again an episode where not much went down. Rebekah was nowhere to be seen. Finn attempted to uncover secrets of both Klaus and Elijah, and failed. Hayley and Jackson started the wedding preparations. Marcel seemed to be the main focus of this episode. He was forced to suffer through the effects of a werewolf bite and we saw flashbacks of his time fighting in WWI.

Biggest mistake: It’s no secret that I’m not excited that Hayley and Jackson are getting married. But I think her participating in this ritual is a big mistake. I trust that Hayley wouldn’t willingly give up her secret. But I don’t trust Jackson or his grandmother (something about her rubs me the wrong way). Hayley doesn’t know what that herb she and Jackson have to take will do. I get that there should be honesty between people who are about to get married but that doesn’t mean all secrets need to be revealed. Especially not ones that if revealed, puts peoples live in danger.

Best scene: Finn thought he was in control this week and could not have been more wrong. He’s been absent from the family for so long, he no longer knows his siblings. He got all his information from his mother, which proves that even though she was supposedly watching her children on the other side, she doesn’t know them at all. Finn thought Klaus was still the same person he was centuries ago, that he wouldn’t be able to forgive Elijah. Even 3 years ago, this might have been true. But Klaus has grown a lot these past years, and while taken aback at first, had no problem forgiving his brother. Elijah and Klaus are both not the same people they were a few years ago, and because of that were able to free themselves from Finn’s spell.

Missing piece: When Marcel first started hallucinating we saw one of his friends during the war, seemingly dying. So I presumed that by the conclusion to this episode, we would find out how his friends died. We did not. Marcel returned from the war alone, which makes me wonder: what happened to them. Marcel wouldn’t just turn them and let them go back to their families like that, would he? Also, I get that as vampires they were indestructible soldiers at night. But what about during the day. I doubt there just happened to be a witch close by who knew how to make daylight rings. So did they just hide the entire day? These are things that I felt needed more clarification.
Biggest disappointment: Am I the only one who found it weird that Davina’s sole focus this week seemed to be Kol. Not Marcel, who she loves like a brother. Not Josh, her best friend. But Kol, a guy she hasn’t known that long, lied to her about his identity, and has made some questionably moves lately. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against Kol (except for what he did to Rebekah) or Davina and Kol as a couple. But I just found it weird that she didn’t seem to care all that much about Marcel and Josh.

Best teamwork: I did like the scene where Marcel and his vampires braved the crowd. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t think they’d listen. But surprisingly they all pulled together and made it to Marcel’s place.

General opinion: As you can probably tell by this review, I did not like this episode very much. Which is probably why I dreaded writing this review in the first place. The pace in this episode and the last one seems very slow. I can only assume this means that the writers are trying to build up to something else (or at least I hope so). I didn’t feel this way at first after I saw the episode, but the more time I had to think about it, the more negatively I started thinking of it. Hopefully next week will be better.
Best quotes: Klaus: “Hate the war, love the hats.”
Davina: “The one time I need you.”
Klaus: “I’m fine. Thank you for your concern.”

That’s it for this week. I hope I didn’t step on anyone’s toes, this is just my opinion. Check in again next week for a new (and hopefully more positive) review. Let me know in the comments what you thought of this week’s episode.
