Troubles in Paradise for Jane and Lisbon in this week's episode of The Mentalist, The Whites of His Eyes. Jane worries for Lisbon’s safety when the team puts itself in the line of fire to protect the witness in a murder investigation from a skilled assassin.
The witness and her husband made Jane think about his relationship with Lisbon: the couple both want to protect what they love - Matthew, the husband, want to protect their kid and ask his wife Lily "Why do you want to risk your life for these people?". On the other hand, she thinks about what she witnessed it may help other people to be safe from this killer. Lily wants to do the right thing and be brave. In her job, Lisbon does the same. She fights for what's right, she joined the law enforcement to be a cop and make justice. Jane's arrived at some point in which he can't stay there and just watch her girlfriend risk her life for other people, who barely know her.
Abbott did a great job by 'threatening' Belinda Bittaker and her son's health. His sarcastic mood when he claims he's Supervisor Agent Dennis Abbott made the woman tremble.
Jane's plan to frame Lydon involves everyone, but he can sees the worries of being shot into Lisbon's eyes. Night in the airstream makes him think a lot about "Someone may get hurt", as if Lydon was Red John 2.0. Even if Lisbon reassures Jane that everything's gonna be alright, she's just faking it - she got scared by the simulation they did in the hotel. The scene in the airstream was really sweet and cute. Lisbon's singing a lullaby to Jane and they sleep cuddling in each other's arms. That's the reason why the chose to be in the airstream: the bed there is tiny so they can stay closer.
Meanwhile, Vega and Wylie keep going on with their flirty thing and they share a funny scene playing some videogames. That girl has balls!
The only one who's not happy with the results is Lisbon. She's been taken off in purpose and she can't accept this: she's an FBI agent and she thinks she can protect herself, but how far will she be safe? Jane just acted like a man concerned about the woman he loved - he's already lost his wife and he can't loose Lisbon too.

Problem is that I can REALLY understand them both... if this were a real-life-problem, I'd say there are only two solutions: leaving the FBI together or one of them switching units... because in the long run, Jane can't control his fears when he always knows exactly what Lisbon is facing at the moment. Since this is fiction, I don't know what the final solution will look like... but I hope that Lisbon will understand where Jane comes from and give him some leeway in the debate. And I hope that in the end, she agrees to leave the FBI with him- not because Jane wants it, but because she herself starts to see the risk and realizes that life might consist of more than this job. She has solely defined herself by what she DOES for so long... in my opinion, she deserves time for a little soul searching. What I definitely hope: that they DON'T make Jane and Lisbon break up, not even temporarily. I hope they're adult enough to understand that they can't ever be happy without each other- and that this is something they need to fight for!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's in the authors's intentions to build a story for 6 seasons and then make them break up after the first obstacle. It's not mature. They have a solid relationship they can work out. Both have their rights, I'm not blaming anyone, I hope this is clear :) thanks for reading, anyway.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure they won't break up after this one fight, Lisbon always over reacts, she will cool off later on this one incident. It was a bummer though as they had been going along so great solving cases as partners perfectly matched. This one was off as Jane went behind her back like in old days, breaking that trust built up over the season, a setback. As for the longer run...The last episode showed that after a tough childhood she created distance from family and her job filled the role of most important aspect of her life. So Jane asking her to leave that job is a big ask! Guess she may need a shock wake up to think it not worth it? That could be tragic so not a good omen! Some people think they'll announce family plans by end of show, which seems far fetched. Lisbon hardly seems motherly, she is totally awkward with kids. Which is fine, she is great as is for Jane! Not everyone needs kids for a happy ending, and they are sort of old??? Anyways just random thoughts! Thanks for the review always insightful, and I enjoy reader comments too!
ReplyDeleteI can understand the two of them. They will make it. Jane has to know when to back off, and Lisbon give him some break because she knows his past. And they have what a good relationship needs: communication.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading :) I think only a child can solve the situation - maybe if Lisbon finds out she's pregnant she will be thinking about it. Also, Jane needs to understand Lisbon's side: she's a cop, she's always done a job like that. I know it's not simple, but they can work things out.
ReplyDeleteCommunication is important for a couple also as trust. When Jane decided on his own that Lisbon needed to stay out of the plan, he made that choice without her. He decided for her and the excuse "I wanted to protect you" wasn't enough. They'll work things out by talking and talking about their future. They have to :)

ReplyDeleteI think that Jane needs a therapy (again), and I hope they solve the problem of his fear of death when it comes to someone he loves. If Lisbon gets pregnant before this problem is solved it's not good, as a child never brings closure or balance in a couple, it is pretty much the contrary. Working in different untis could be a solution, but won't solve the problem. What I see coming is that Abott will leave the team (maybe gets killed) or follows his wife if she is promoted, and then Lisbon will become the new boss, less exposed to danger.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Abbott gets killed. I'd be worried for Vega instead. Her hot temper is not good for her job and her team. A kid can solve Jane and Lisbon's problems but maybe it's an issue that can be showed in the finale.
ReplyDeleteI really think a kid would'nt solve Jane's problem, a kid doesn't sovle anything like such a psychological problem, it is the contrary, it would be a new reason for Jane to worry about Lisbon as a mother, and he would worry for the kid too... I hope Lisbon won't give up on her job, and that they will work it out the right way.

ReplyDeleteAbout the fact that a kid can't solve a couple's problems, I'm not the only one saying that. you can find a lot about it on internet shrinks and people who can testify by their own experience about this for exemple follow the link http://psychcentral.com/lib/what-you-need-to-consider-before-having-kids/00011272. To get a baby is more like a hardship. Like you, I really hope that Lisbon won't give up on her job because it defines her so much, she deserves to get a promotion and to be happy as a woman too.
ReplyDeleteI've been watching this show mostly out of habit at this point and because the show is in it's final season, I want to see it through. But this episode was actually good. It sort of reminded me of the time when the show used to be good. I am watching several episodes in succession, so maybe someone who has been watching the show regularly may have a different opinion, but I thought in terms of tone, this episode felt very different from what a typical episode of the show seems like now.
