CBS and Warner Bros. Television have found their Supergirl.
Glee and Whiplash breakout Melissa Benoist has been tapped to play the iconic DC Comics character, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The hourlong drama, which received a hefty series commitment, centers on Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Benoist will play Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taken in by a foster family, the Danvers, who taught her to be careful with her extraordinary powers (which she shares with her famous cousin, Superman).
Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She's still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn't know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she's even given a new moniker: Supergirl.

What? She was terrible in Glee. How could they choose her over Claire Holt?
ReplyDeleteJust sent in the TvLine article into scoop. Never watched the girl act but after Grant I got fate into the Glee kids.
ReplyDeleteTerrible choice, IMHO.
ReplyDeletethe actress or the character?
ReplyDeleteSo happy for her! She was wonderful on Glee and amazing in Whiplash!
ReplyDeleteI don't know her, but i really wanted Claire Holt though.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about this chick at all!
ReplyDeleteWell this is disappointing.
ReplyDeleteWasn't Elizabeth Lial up for the role. She was so fun in OUAT. Hopefully, she was testing out for Kara and will get cast in the show too.
AAaaaaaaand there goes my excitement
ReplyDeleteThis is a joke, quite a bad one...not so excited about the show anymore.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree
ReplyDeleteI was super excited for the show, but now i am not excited at all
Hopefully she will surprise me
Think they are going for someone older tobfill the role. But Elizabeth would be a good choice.
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed Megan Ory is in the inner ccircle For Kara
Why? She seems like a lovely person, is a decent actor and will probably do an amazing job. What's the issue?
ReplyDeleteSeems like a good choice! Her character in Glee wasn't written very well, but her acting was okay. I'm sure she'll do a great job as Kara.
ReplyDeleteAlso, she recently dyed her hair blonde (as seen on social media) so now we know why ;)
I'm expecting lots of "Why not Clarie Holt" comments. No but honestly I have no idea how this will turn out, never watched Glee.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth Lial looks older and prettier than Melissa Benoist and she was incredibly good in OUAT...I would've been happy with her or Claire Holt getting the lead...but someone who wasn't even wanted on Glee...it sucks.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen her in Whiplash which she was pretty good in. Now I'm really excited for Supergirl.
ReplyDeleteNooooooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteshame i was hoping for elizabeth lail but good luck to melissa im sure she will kill it
ReplyDeleteThe issue is that I dont want a "decent" actor, there were much better actresses the could've chosen.
ReplyDeleteNow they just have to cast Megan Ory as Alex and I'll be happy.
ReplyDeleteEw ew ew ew ew. But she is like the textbook definition of basic
ReplyDeleteIt isn't hard to look older than Melissa but think they wanted a person who looks really older. But wouldn't mind for Elizabeth to get the role.
ReplyDeleteObviously they disagree ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure she'll surprise us. Grant Gustin was also on Glee and he is a great Flash!
ReplyDeleteThe age in the casting notices was 22 to 26.
ReplyDeleteI'm willing to give her a chance. I was very skeptical about Grant Gustin because I hated him on Glee, and I love him on The Flash. She might suprise us.
ReplyDeleteShe's still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn't know it herself.
ReplyDeleteDear god shoot me now. This is ridiculous and insulting in this day and age, what a cliche. Its like ever teen movie when the 'ugly duckling' takes off her glasses and lets her hair down and is suddenly hot.
Eh.
ReplyDeleteGeorgina Haig + Meghan Ory would have been perfect
ReplyDeleteI would be so happy if they cast Meghan as Alex! Her audition was really good and she'd look great next to Melissa
ReplyDeleteOh, I wanted Claire Holt to play the part :(
ReplyDeleteThey were looking for ages 22 to 26 for the lead.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who she is but I'll give her a chance. I just hope the writing isn't a load of misogynist mess.
ReplyDeleteWho said Claire Holt was even an option?
ReplyDeleteI still dislike a lot of his performance and consider him to be a pretty lackluster actor
ReplyDeleteShe is my biggest TV star crush. I hope she does a good job...
ReplyDeleteshe screentested for the role
ReplyDeleteHmm. Not jumping on the 'preemptive judging' bandwagon. Let's see how she fares and then decide.
ReplyDeleteI loved Melissa on Glee and Whiplash i think she will do an Amazing Job.
ReplyDeleteIt's been confirmed she was in the running for the role.
ReplyDeleteYes, she was the first actress they tested.
ReplyDeleteWell to be honest, aren't most superheroes like this? Clark Kent (Kara's cousin) does the same thing.
ReplyDeleteThought it was late 20ties and early 30ties. My bad.
ReplyDeleteWell, this is an, um... interesting choice. Nothing against the actress or her talents but I don't see it. It's going to take a lot to convince me she's right for this role.
ReplyDeleteStill Nooooooooooooooo !!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind the hiding themselves bit its the whole she's still pretty but doesn't know it! Like come onnnnn its 2015 we need to move away from it.
ReplyDeleteThey say, they can still hear the nos to this day. ;) :)
ReplyDeleteWell, everyone has their own opinion :)
ReplyDeleteLet's see how she fares and then decide what we think of her. Maybe she'll surpise us.
It's just odd how DC shows appear to go to Glee stars for lead roles as of late
ReplyDeleteMade me roll my eyes, that line. Sounded like a Taylor Swift song visual put into writing.
ReplyDeletewait, this is on CBS, what?! How is that going to work, and where will they even air it? I'm guessing Scorpion's Mon at 9 slot (altho I hope not) cos I can't see where else it might fit?
ReplyDeleteHuh. Never seen this actress in anything. Claire Holt would have been a good choice, but I guess we'll see how this girl does.
ReplyDeleteBut all that aside, at the end of the day, I still just cannot picture this show on CBS.
This just sounds like a bad idea i doubt she will make a good supergirl but you will never know until the show airs but i just don't see it working without the superman element. That would be cool if the did another superman show to combine with Arrow and Flash on the cw but smallville was so good. I dont een know if they could pull that off. But if this show airs ill give it a shoot.
ReplyDeleteThursday at 10 for Scorpion? Elementary moves to Fridays or Sundays.
ReplyDeleteShe was in Whiplash?
ReplyDeleteI'm SO happy it isn't Claire Holt. I think she is an awful actress.
ReplyDeleteClaire Holt would've been better...
ReplyDeleteShe was good on Glee but nothing outstanding , lets see how she does this.
I'm starting to suspect this show was written ten years ago.
ReplyDeleteScorpion is not a 10pm show tho, altho I could see them doing that. Unless they wait until BBT moves to Thurs and only have a 2 hour comedy block?
ReplyDeleteWhen TVD was going down the drain..(in terms of female characters) Claire Holt's Rebekah was the saving grace. I still remember her introductory episode 3 years back, Amazing screen-presence.
ReplyDeleteI don't really know her, but definitely i'm disappointed with the choice.
ReplyDeleteAt least, maybe its just a terrible description and the finished product will be better...
ReplyDeleteFellow poster I can't put down just how "disappointed" I am that Claire Holt will not be Super Girl. (Now that this piece of CBS nonsense is out of the way Aquarius is next and then we get Claire Holt and "The Original Reunion"...........DAMMIT, I didn't mean to post this part) fellow readers just ignore everything after "disappointed". Nobody 4 MUCH LATER!!!
ReplyDeleteMeghan Ory wasn't in the running. She auditioned to play Kara's sister.
ReplyDeleteWhat city is this show based in? I hope that it isn't Metropolis. Is there another fake famous DC(?) city?
ReplyDeleteNot sure about cbs or the casting. But idk I might watch if it's mostly the 31st century storyline.
ReplyDeleteMeh.
ReplyDelete:-)
ReplyDeleteHey guys, can you hold the negativity untill the series its picked up for at least 13 episodes? This way the series will sink like Wonder Woman, it will be the pilot and that's it. Let's give Melissa the chance to play the character and then we can complain.
ReplyDeleteLmaoooo
ReplyDelete"What city is this show based in?"
ReplyDeleteNational City (which is "halfway across the country" from Metropolis).
Yeah, i remember the a lot of people criticized Grant when they announced him as The Flash. And look right now. Grant is doing a amazing job. Same with Stephen, who just keep growing more and more. I think they saw something special on her for the part, so i will just wait and hope that she will surprise me, the same way the Grant did. I think this show has lots of potential!
ReplyDeleteI liked her in Whiplash, but she was meh on Glee.
ReplyDeleteI was rooting for Claire too..but maybe Melissa will surprise me.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't stand her character on Glee.
ReplyDeleteI like the choice, maybe in this she have a chance to bring her game, because the script of Glee never give her a real chance to shine.
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's one of the reasons. I think she can be good with the proper material.
ReplyDeleteExactly, I think Melissa could do a good job, people even see her in the role yet and all make judgement like they are some kind president of quality TV.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right,I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt before throwing stones.
ReplyDeleteHm, I'll give her a chance. I mean, I stopped watching Glee around the time she came on but that was due to the god-awful writing. So, we'll see. Not going to judge until I see her in "action"
ReplyDeleteHaven't really seen her in anything, but I'm quite "meh" about the whole show, so I dunno...
ReplyDeleteI wanted Clare Holt :(
ReplyDeleteThanks for the response.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, that name sounds really lame. At least Metropolis sounds good even Star(ling) city sounds OK.
Wasn't interested in this from the start... this casting doesn't make me any more interested. I guess i'll give it a chance because it may be on the Flarrow universe, but it being a female SUperman show instead of a SUpergirl show and it being a procedural, that just turn me off.
ReplyDeleteI agree. The comments when it was announced that Grant was going to be The Flash were also very negative and he's terrific in the show. I can't imagine anyone else doing it. I'd love to know how many of those negative nellies are now watching the show.
ReplyDeleteDidn't CBS already give it a series commitment?
ReplyDeleteTo each their own. I happen to like the name.
ReplyDeleteman Elizabeth Lail was such a delight in this season of OUAT, I really liked her. It would of been great if she was super girl.
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what they were looking for.
ReplyDeleteDon't like it. Smh. What a shame.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait for the show. DC has some really good shows
ReplyDeletehuh
ReplyDeleteI don't mind. It's a surprising casting choice but the fact that I don't know how well she'll do in the role is part of the fun for me. I've been surprised a lot recently by casting choices turning out to be great when I thought they wouldn't be. I'll see how she does in the role and THEN I'll judge it, not before.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Melissa is quite a petite woman. Not sure how she'll pass as supergirl. I guess we'll see.
Agreed. Between bad casting (nobody in their right mind would ever pass over Claire Holt!) and the line about Kara basically being a 90s teen romance movie character, I just can't look forward to this.
ReplyDeleteGood to see Melissa Benoist getting a strong role, she was fine on Glee. However, I'm still not at all interested in the conceit of teenage/young adult superhero origin/prequel stories, especially not on network tv. I doubt I'll tune in.
ReplyDeletebut if she's her Lex it'll be hard to see her evil, but her getting a major role WOULD be awesome
ReplyDeleteNot at all who I pictured in the role, but I said the same thing about Grant Gustin, and even Stephen Amell, and they have both proven great in their roles. So good luck to her. My only issue, I really can't picture her as a blonde. At all.
ReplyDeleteamazing? Gustin and Amell? Ummm..I have to disagree with that big time. The only characteristic that makes Barry are his CG-superpowers, personality wise he's absolutely underwhelming thanks to Gustins overly hammy performance. And Amell...sure he grows into it and is giving it his best, however...it's by no means a good performance. While Gustin hams it up Amell is like shallow ice-cream. No taste. (There's good ham like John Barrowmans style, then there's just obnoxious overacting like Gustin suffers from).
ReplyDeleteThis isn't an 'origin story', though. She's going to BE Supergirl from the start of the series.
ReplyDeleteI'm usually willing to give actors a chance, however DC has REALLY dropped the balls big time.
ReplyDeleteWhile I can name you dozens of miscasts for DC heroes I can only give you a few names that were cast well. DC is good with casting villains though.
I'm really starting to wish that DC would just copy Marvel at this point. Wich is sad because I liked how DC wanted to pull a different approach but it really doesen't work for me. Man of Steel was gorgeous but for Superman too moody. I would have rather had a completely dumb 80 minute long Superman feature in the style of Iron Man than that.
Casting charismatic actors seems to be Marvels strength.
She may be surprising. I was surprised that Adrianne Palicki pulled off Wonder Woman (the unaired pilot was around for a while). Melissa was okay on Glee, she can definitely do the shy wallflower thing for Kara and maybe she has unknown athleticism that makes her good for Supergirl too.
ReplyDeleteAli Adler who is running this show came up under Ryan Murphy's wing (with stints on Glee and The New Normal) so it wouldn't hurt if Melissa got Ryan's stamp of approval and that was passed along to Ali.
Looks like Melissa's nude hacking pics have helped her instead of hurt it.
A lot of people are jumping the gun here. This is now the second Glee alumn who is starring in a series based on a comic book. When I first heard that Grant Gustin was starring on The Flash I had my doubts. I didn't think that he would be able to carry his own show. Although I don't watch it I didn't hear anything negative about his performance. Maybe some people will be surprised by Melissa's performance.
ReplyDeleteDo a google search for Melissa Benoist blonde. You'll see her new blonde hairdo. She looks great.
ReplyDeleteSupergirl the Musical next on CBS

oh no. I was on for Claire Holt. She was epic in Smallville as Kara... Hope Benoist will be good at least
ReplyDeleteshe was Kara in Smallville at least
ReplyDeleteSeriously Melissa Benoist??? She is so young and she did not impress me in Glee :(
ReplyDeleteYess I really wanted her to play the part and I'm sure she will do great
ReplyDeleteLaura Vaderwoot or something was Kara in Msallville.
ReplyDeleteI really like Mellissa Benoist. Marley's a bit boring, but I think Melissa's going to do great with a character like Kara. Besides, impossible to judge any actor based on their Glee roles! Such a crazy show.
ReplyDelete:O I'm a total idiot sorry I mixed up the actresses
ReplyDeleteShe is 26!!! I don't know somehow she was not the picture I had of the character. May be she will wow me. I will keep my mouth shit till then :)
ReplyDeleteIt's one step away from an origin story. She's aware of her powers, but hasn't yet carved out a public image and will probably deal greatly with a struggle concerning when it's okay to use powers. Call it a narrative midquel if you will. It's not quite yet the meat of the characters' heroics and due to her still unforged public image, I can't imagine much of a villainous mythology existing yet. The show will have to set up the basics -- hardly any different from an origin story.
ReplyDeleteIt's just a different angle from the same thing as CW's Arrow and The Flash, both of which I'm already completely uninterested in.
The 22 to 26 age range was for Kara, not for Alex. Here's Alex's official character description:
ReplyDeleteThe other lead role currently being cast is that of 26-year-old Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, Kara’s gorgeous, brilliant, science-minded foster sister. Growing up, Alex was partly jealous of her sibling yet also fascinated by her abilities, prompting Alex to learn as much as she could about alien anthropology, sociology and culture. Today, Alex works for a secret government organization and, alongside her heroic sis, will face many challenges, both mundane and super.
No age range is specified, but given that they've cast the 26-year-old Benoist as the 24-year-old Supergirl, it seems a given at this point that they'll cast somebody older, particularly since we know that the 32-year-old Ory went out for the role.
Done. She looks good, didn't doubt she would, just couldn't picture it.
ReplyDeletebecause Melissa is better then Holt, and she didn't abandon the roles like Claire did
ReplyDeleteClaire is awful actress, she make Rebekah look like a sl*t
ReplyDeletehappy it isn't Claire Holt, she is an awful actress.
ReplyDeletelol
ReplyDelete
