SpoilerTV Readers' 40 Best TV Moments of 2014

Jan 1, 2015

Note: The moments between 35 and 40 had exactly the same number of votes and their order is random. Also true for moments 27-34, 22-26, 17-21, 10-15, 8-9.

40. The Originals - Klaus gives Hope to Rebekah for safekeeping
"I enjoyed this scene because despite what they have been through as siblings Rebekah was the perfect choice to take the baby away to safety and raise her, especially because she's always wanted a family."

39. How I Met Your Mother - Series finale
"It has been severly critized but I think that it meant the end of an era. I think that the finale was perfect as Ted was made for Robin and the show was about their relationship, not Ted with the Mother's, althought it was impossible not to fall in love with Cristin Millioti."
"Ted & Robin's final scene - I have loved these two from the beginning, so them getting together in the end made perfect sense to me."

38. Bones - Sweets dies
"Sweets dying on Bones, no spoilers for it and it just knocked me off my feet. What a great character to lose." "Sweets' death is up there with Zack's betrayal for me."

37. Agents of SHIELD - May vs. May fight
"The best fight scene this year (and maybe the best of late years), even better than the fight scenes in Arrow this year." "Great special effects and such a big step for action on TV."
"It was an amazing and funny scene. The writers did good about this because it showed that even though everything was going to hell at the moment that they knew how to lighten it up."

36. Once Upon A Time - Belle banishes Rumpelstiltskin from Storybrooke
"A scene many thought would never happen. Finally Belle sees the darkness in Rumple and makes him pay for it. Writing Belle in a brain was a great move for the show."
"We were all waiting for Belle to find out about Rumple's lies. It was great to see her stand up to him. Very emotional scene."

35. Revenge - David Clarke's alive
"I've chosen this moment because it meant that everything we seem to know about the show was a lie and that nothing is what it seems." "Woah. Did not see that coming Revenge."

34. The Mentalist - Season 7 Renewal
"Just awesome!"

33. Once Upon A Time - Robin Hood tells Regina Mills that he chooses her
"Never in a million years would I think the Evil Queen from Snow White would fall in love. And with, of all people, the famous thief Robin Hood. She is rich, he is poor. She was evil and he is good. But I loved watching every minute of it. The contrast worked."
"Robin Hood dropping his code of honour (that's something big) to be with Regina. That is a great display of love, letting go of something of oneself to be with your true love. Also that kiss was so steamy I nearly fainted."

32. The Vampire Diaries - Damon and Elena kiss in the rain
"This is something that fans have been asking for since season 1. And we never thought it was going to happen...But it did and it was such an amazing moment."
"I loved this, it was such a purely happy moment and the fact that it was a flashback, a memory that had kept Damon going in 'hell' yet in the present, he was having to let Elena go because she'd compelled away her memories of their relationship was really heartbreaking. And that kiss was swoony."
"Because it renewed the my faith in Delena and the show itself."

31. Once Upon A Time - Snow Queen/Ingrid sacrifices herself
"I loved this entire scene, Elizabeth Mitchell's performance was spectacular all season but this was her best moment." "Perfect end for a villain and I felt sorry for her."

30. Revenge - Emily tells David the truth
"Finally, after what seemed forever, Emily confronted David and let him know she's Amanda."
"I was in shock at this moment. I did not think it would be so soon and the level of emotion was heartbreaking."

29. Supernatural - Dean becomes a demon
"Shocking and very scary. He became the thing he had been hunting all his life."
"At the time, the final shot of the season 9 finale was both shocking (to some) and exciting. One of the show's two protagonists – the one who'd never dabbled in the dark side – becoming a demon? Sharp way to end a season."

28. Once Upon A Time - Frozen arc
"It was a season finale that had everyone (including non-fans like me) talking. Because of that little Frozen teaser, OUAT's season premiere was probably one of the most-anticipated of the fall."
"It was fun to watch."

27. Sherlock - Moriarty's return
"Moriarty is apparently back? 'Did you miss me'? Sherlock season 3 was so gooood! Mary, Magnussen, the best man speech, how in the world did Sherlock fake his death..all good stuff. But Moriarty is backkkk!?!?" "What's else to say? YAY!"

26. Once Upon A Time - Hook and Emma get together
"Hook and Emma kiss outside of Granny’s (There’s No Place Like Home) - the whole season, and when they met it had all been leading to this moment, finally letting Hook in, and the reveal of The Jolly Roger."
"Emma finally accepting Storybrooke as her home and her feelings for Killian was everything I ever wanted to see on that show."

25. Game of Thrones - Tyrion's speech
"Tyrion's rant. Peter Dinklage has been amazing and this 2 minute speech stole the season for me."
"This scene sends shivers down my spine. The dialogue and the acting is simply brilliant."
"It was phenomenal! Filled with emotions (anger, frustration, impotence, resolve). Beautifully delivered. The strenght of the words stays with me to this day."

24. Agents of SHIELD - Skye's Transformation / Trip's death
"Skye’s transformation in the episode “What They Become” – because it was a huge step for the show to introduce Inhumans and affect the MCU and not vice versa like in the past."
"While the scene mostly focused on Skye getting her powers I will forever remember it being the one where Trip dies. The look on Skye's face when she realized what was happening was heart-wrenching."

23. Revenge - Emily puts Victoria in a mental institution
"A win for all Revengers alike, as Emily walks out down the halls of the mental institution in badass slow-motion, leaving Victoria in there to rot."
"I enjoyed this scene because after the horrible death Victoria did to Aiden, this was symmetry especially because Victoria locked Emily's mother in a mental institution."

22. The Walking Dead - Carol frees up the entire group at terminus and the survivors are reunited
"Because Carol had an amazing character development. She started as a helpless victim of her husband's abuse, and now she is a survivor and a fighter, saving everyone."
"Carol being reunited with the group on TWD: Finally, payoff after all of that wandering along the train tracks! Carol's full transformation to badass and the love among this ad hoc family. TWD can do both extremes, and that's why we love it."

21. How to Get Away with Murder - Annalise is revealed to be present on the night of Sam's murder
"There was a lot in this show that I did not like (Michaela's engagement storyline, overabundance of Connor's sex scenes, creepy relationship between Rebecca and Wes), but the murder plot is insanely good. I had no idea who killed Sam until the reveal, and I certainly did not expect Annalise to be a complicit in it."

20. Arrow - Oliver and Felicity kiss
"The culmination of two years of romantic tension and incredible chemistry between these two stars."
"Their kiss had to be one of the most romantic and sweetest kisses I've ever seen."

19. Grey's Anatomy - Christina Yang's Goodbye
"I’ve enjoyed watching Cristina over the years, and I was sad to see her leave. Her last episode was wonderful- it was all we could have asked for Dr. Yang."
"We knew Sandra Oh was leaving Grey's for the longest time, and her dance party with Meredith, and telling Meredith that Derek's not the sun, was a brilliant way for her to leave."
"Goodbye Christina Yang. You were such a fun character to watch. For once a happy goodbye - a bitter sweet departure – but a happy one."
"The departure of one of the best characters ever created, rightly played by one of the best actresses who ever graced a TV screen. Unforgettable. Thank you Sandra, and thank you Shonda."

18. Chicago Fire / Law and Order: SVU / Chicago PD - Crossover event
"I loved seeing the characters interact with each other. The acting and the storylines were great. I want more crossovers!"
"Dick Wolf was really smart doing it. The main story worked so well among them that I wouldn't mind watching another crossover in the future."
"Crossovers aren't new, but NBC may have fueled a trend in a big way this year by crossing over not just two but THREE of their shows ... and all three shows spiked in the ratings as a result."
"Wow. That was 3 hours of epicness over two nights."

17. How to Get Away with Murder - The series premiere
"I walked away not knowing what I had just watched. This show has been crazy, and I can’t wait for more!"
"What's not to like? The show show is full of scandal, sex, lies, and law. Plus Viola Davis has been killing it every single week."

16. Arrow - Moira's death
"I loved this moment because it was unexpected and heartbreaking but above all haunting, I could not get it out of my head for days to come. The look on Oliver's face stayed with me. The parallelism to a moment earlier in the season was just too beautiful."
"Moira sacrifices herself to Slade. It was her only truly selfless acts as a character."

15. Revenge - Daniel's death
"This was such a powerful scene between Emily and Daniel and was acted out perfectly. The suspense had been building right up until the moment that he was shot, and died in Emily's arms."
"The death of Daniel and the events leading up to it were incredible. I never wanted him to die, but they made his death so good I actually am glad they killed him off. I like how they showed the journey of his life. How he was always a good, moral, and honest man and how the influences of his family and name clouded his judgement."
"Who knew I'd be sad about this? But it was a truly well written story line for Daniel, and the writers did a great job of actually making us like him and rooting for him before his death."

14. The Big Bang Theory - Sheldon tells Amy he loves her
"Poor Amy has been so patient with Sheldon, having him admit feeling was such a sweet moment."
"We could only take Sheldon's aloofness for so long, and I was starting to lose interest in the show because each of the romantic relationships has become kind of one-note. Overall it's just not as good as it used to be, but that was a great moment."

13. Arrow - Oliver tells Felicity he loves her
"I loved this moment. While we’re still waiting for this “will-they-won’t-they” couple to get together, this was a step in the right direction. I love these two!"
"Such a great moment, such a great couple, such an amazing development for a guy who swore he'd forever be alone in his fight against evil in Starling City."
"It was a whole mix of emotions. It was worth the wait but when Oliver died, the whole Arrow world died with him!"

12. Game of Thrones - The Mountain vs. The Viper
"I loved Oberyn Martell so to see him that that way after an exhilarating duel which he had practically won was horrendous. It was cruel in a way only Game of thrones can be."
"“You raped her, You murdered her, you killed her children!” This scene will be forever etched in my memory. Oberyn fighting the Mountain to save Tyrion and to also avenge his sister’s death was incredible."
"Pedro Pascal nailed it as Oberyn Martell. The fight was so well choreographed and his death was just sad and brutal."

11. The Good Wife - Will's death
"Also one of the saddest TV moments for me, but the scenes leading up to and after the event were so brilliantly executed that it reminded me of why this is one of the best shows in television."
"I think that the writers did an amazing job with the two episodes as they made me cry. Will Gardner was one of the most important characters and we will miss him."
"Will's death and its aftermath. Perfection on all levels, and one of several gems for a masterpiece of a season."

10. Supernatural - 200th episode
"Few shows reach 200 episodes, and even fewer with the ratings history and tumultuous scheduling Supernatural has faced. An impressive milestone for "the little show that could.""
"I've never watched the show religiously but what an accomplishment. The show doesn't get nearly as much press as it deserves so congrats to the boys of the show."
"Supernatural's 200th episode because it really was a love letter to the fans in the best way possible. They told inside jokes the fandom understands and gave out the message that you can do anything with your Supernatural."

9. The Flash - Barry tells Iris he loves her
"It was cathartic for Barry. Also never expected it this soon. Everything from the writing, acting and music was perfection. I teared up and I'm definitely still not over it."
"Both actors brought so much heart to the scene. Grant was so sincere, vulnerable and brave laying it all on the line. Candice hardly spoke but I felt her shock and confusion at this game-changing information. It was an amazing moment of TV."

8. The 100 - Bellamy and Clarke's reunion
"Bellamy and Clarke had such a great dynamic and chemistry together in season 1. It was great to see them reunite, to see how much they need each other."
"I love Bellarke and all their scenes, they have such great chemistry."

7. Game of Thrones - The Purple Wedding
"I know this was earlier in the year but was a huge moment for GOT. I think we all celebrated and both mourned this loss. He was a very sick villain no one can disagree with that. But I will say this is one of many big moments for the show."
"I've never seen so many people being happy about character's death. Including me."
"GoT knows how to give a wedding party!"

6. Agents of SHIELD - Ward is Hydra
"The way Skye found out combined with him killing Victoria Hand and sending FitzSimmons in a crate to die, was easily the most shocking yet bold of moves done on the show to this day."
"This reveal made no 1 for me. It really hit home and actually hurt. I went through a rollercoaster of emotions. My denial lasted for several episodes. Accomplishing that without the death of a main character (not counting the ones Ward killed) – wow."
"In addition to being shocking and unexpected, it also helped push the crossover story with Winter Soldier forward."

5. Castle - Castle and Beckett get married "It was long waited and it did not disapoint."
"I believe I speak for everybody when I say about damn time! The scene was sweet and endearing, and was 100% them."
"It was shorter than I'd like but at least it happened. And their vows were perfect."

4. The 100 - Finn's death
"I was expecting him to die but it was just done so brilliantly, another scene that had me in tears."
"I expected Finn to die in this episode giving heavy foreshadowing, but not for once did I think that Clarke will be the one to kill him. It is such a strong scene when she begs grounders to take her instead, but then resolves to stabbing Finn to give him a merciful death. This moment will haunt Clarke for a long time, not to mention the drift it will cause between her and Raven. The 100 continues to be an incredible show that defies my expectations."
"Again, it was dark but so beautifully done. It is not something you'll see other shows try on network TV and The 100 doesn't get enough credit for that. "
"So dark and haunting. I love that the show went there and didn't find a way to miraculously save Finn at the last minute."

3. Arrow - Oliver's death
"It felt like he really died. I knew he'd lose the battle, but still it shocked me."
"The twist itself was not that big but it looked so definite and that made it shocking. I mean we know he will come back – and still it is unsettling and the fear what it will do to Oliver and the fear of how the heck are they going to make sense of Oliver coming back!?!?!"
"What a scene! Even though you know in your mind he's not really dead, that scene still packed a punch!"
"So shocking. I'd never thought the writers could do that to their main character."

2. Arrow and The Flash Crossover
"One of the best two hours of television in 2014. Having this crossover felt so natural, filled with action and humor. Arrow and The Flash battle scene was superb."
"It’s hard to come up with one specific scene, but there was so much great chemistry between the characters on both shows that they just brought out the best in everyone. I loved seeing the brotherly dynamics between Oliver and Barry, and their friendly rivalry at the end."
"One word: Amazing. As a fan of both shows I'm hoping for more crossovers in the future."
"Now that is how you do a major television crossover."

1. The Mentalist - Jane and Lisbon get together
"The most exciting, intense TV moment of the year happened in the last seconds of The Mentalist season 6 finale when Patrick Jane and Teresa Lisbon finally kissed after professing their love. It was the most long-awaited, romantic, genuine and moving moment I ever saw on TV. Made my heart melt."
"I chose this moment because I, as an audience member, have been waiting for Jane to break past his strong emotional barrier and finally admit to something true/real. It was a relief as a viewer to see that he was actually capable of that. Both actors played it beautifully; they hit all the right notes and subtlety for me." "After six years of waiting - finally!"

  14. Glad to see The 100 on there and I loved both those scenes!

Love that OUAT scene with Belle and Rumple but what is that nonsense about her using her brain for once? The girl has always done so and she's stood up to Rumple before this. I think people forget that she didn't know what we knew. She didn't know he swaped daggers and she didn't know about his plan with SB and leaving. As SOON as she found out she told him off.

  19. agreed. i'm now only limiting myself to only 1 or 2 comments a thread. otherwise, it has turned into a such a hateful site, where its forbidden to root for a low rated show.

  24. Happy New Year!
Great work Justyna! And thank you!
Ha from my initial list all scenes are on there, considering they were only from Aos, Arrow and The 100. But to get more variety on my list I cramped a few together like naming The 100 my new favorite new show. Just saw Gotham mid season finale yesterday, so actually the Bruce Selina development would have made it on my top ten.
No 1 is such a great surprise and well deserved, I am not up to speed with The Mentalist but I know what I will be watching tomorrow (second half of S6), it probably would have made it on my list.

  25. Love revenge but hardly comment there either. Frohes neues.

  26. Such wonderful moments! Most of my top moments made this list. The only ones I would have liked to have seen were the Hawaii 5-0 100th episode (which was on the spoilertv list) and Shay's death on Chicago Fire. Overall a fantastic list. Can't wait for 2015.

  27. What about Kensi and Deeks getting together? Sure the rest of the season has stunk but it desevrs a mention

  28. What about Jackson and April getting married on Grey's? Not getting this at all!

  33. Well, I was going to mention the "Sleepy Hollow" season 1 finale, but that's on the other list, so that takes care of that :D. No argument with the "How to Get Away with Murder" mention, either.
Another favorite scene for me on TV this year was Garcia saving Reid's life in the season 9 finale. Heck, I enjoyed all the scenes between them in general-they have a nice friendship, and it was great to see some focus on that. Troy leaving "Community" and Pierce's death would also qualify on my personal list as well.
And speaking of "Community", if we're adding renewals to our "best moments" list, how about Yahoo! saving the show and giving it an opportunity for another season?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Happy new year to everyone already celebrating elsewhere in the world. Can't wait for us in the U.S. to join you in a few hours :D.

  35. Glad Klaus giving Hope to Rebekah, The Flash/Arrow crossover, Oliver's death, The May vs. May fight, and Ward is with Hydra reveal were on the list. Those were my favorites found on the list. I have others. What order they'd go in, I'm not sure.

  36. Happy New Year everyone! It's 4am over here, I've just come from a party, and I'm happy!. :D Five of my picks made it to the list! And two of my comments! Yeah! It was really a great year with lots of great moments! It was so hard to choose... Justyna, thank you for putting this list together. ^^

  37. Where do you live if i may ask?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree.
While the finale had SOME great moments in it, the last 2 minutes of it was so horribly disastrous, like I am talking Dexter as a lumberjack level of disastrous, that the finale itself is 1 of the worst episodes of 2014...because of the last 2 minutes.
It should not be even mentioned as, let alone in, any "Best of 2014" list.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It is amazing to me how many of these are either shipping or death. That pretty much sums up TV these days. I agree that May vs. May is one of the best fight scenes of the year. Demon Dean was quite a surprise too.

    ReplyDelete
  40. It is funny seeing how this list compares to the list from SpoilerTV crew. Thanks for doing this and thanks also for separating them. It is quite eye-opening.

  41. Pretty cool to see this compared to Spoiler Team's list. Thanks Justyna for all of your hard work (and sorry I have been missing in action, been getting over a bad cold).

Happy New Year's Everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Happy TV-Viewing Along with Good Health for 2015!!XD

  42. It's more sad, than amazing. I've hade it up to here with ships.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Justyna thank you very much for quoting me twice #24 #37. Good job! Thank you! :)

And Happy New Year everyone !

    ReplyDelete
  44. I agree great list and happy to see Mentalist at #1 that was my favorite too!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I disagree; there's a lot more to TV these days, but none of the shows I would have mentioned are listed on here. It's because ships and deaths are the unifying topics for fans, and it's the moments that might feel like big payoff for some.

Some moments I would have mentioned:
True Detective - The six minute long tracking shot
Hannibal - Dr Lecter leaving behind a bloodbath in the finale (ok, that might be death ;))
Person Of Interest - Collier's "trial of the US government" or the Root vs Martine scene
Homeland - Saul almost committing suicide before Carrie betrays him/saves his life
The Leftovers - Nora hugs Holy Wayne (finally coming to terms with the loss of her family)
Bates Motel - Norman attacks his Uncle or Norman and his mother kiss in the finale (that's SO not a shipping moment, ugh!)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Of course, I am from Serbia. :)

  47. Castle was Better!!!

  51. I guess I should have clarified. It feels like every show is being pushed to have shipping, even right from the start, or to kill someone off like that's the only way to provide good drama. It's getting very old and feels like TV is stuck in a rut these days. There are of course many great TV scenes/moments that don't revolve around these 2 things, but it feels like they do not get the proper acknowledgement, at least online. Oh and by the way, I am very happy that a mother-son kiss is not shipping. If incest becomes the norm, I might have to go off TV altogether.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah for The Mentalist \o/ Happy New Year everyone : )

    ReplyDelete
  53. They were a big reason why I never got past the pilot of Game of Thrones.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's unconformable, but I can wrap my head around it. It just is something that was once (and probably somewhere still is) culturally acceptable at certain times and places. In world/reality like GOT, I can see why siblings/ culture family beliefs may/would gravitate towards each other in that way. Beyond that, it really is a great complicated show. I wish you would give it another chance.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was going to put the Psych series finale on here, but it probably wouldn't have made it.
    Great year for TV! :D

    ReplyDelete
  56. Amazing article, amazing scenes, last year had some great TV, here's to this one keeping it up.

  57. That was one of my favorite moments too.

The best Supernatural!!! :D Demon!Dean and 200th episodes! Arrow: Olicity kiss, Moira's death, ''I love you'' and ''Oliver's death''. Game of Thrones: Tyrion!! Once Upon a Time: Hook and Emma together :D

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ugh, David being alive was predictable since season 1. Always knew they'd bring him back as a "twist". When he "died" in prison I knew it for sure. I wish they hadn't brought him back. Hate that storyline. I never cared much one way or another for Daniel up until recently. Started FINALLY shipping him and Emily with the elevator scene...and then he freaking dies! Go figure...

Don't even get me started on the horrible HIMYM finale...

Rumple and Belle are my OTP of OTPs...but I am glad for that scene. It needed to happen. I'm hoping Rumple will now realize he needs to treat her better and eventually chooser her over power.

Damon/Elena scenes all make me gag. And the Ingrid's death...meh...I wasn't so impressed with that scene. Came off as kind of fake and cheesy (not the good kind of cheesy)

Am loving Emma and Hook and their cute casual couple scenes (since I know that cute stuff won't last forever on a TV show). Olicity's kiss was perfect and about time (same with him telling her he loved her). Sheldon telling Amy he loves her was adorable. Barry telling Iris he loved her seemed a bit too soon since it's only the first season...but I did love the scene. Flash vs Arrow was great.

Finn's death was sad :( Joffrey's was epic! The Mountain Versus the Viper was great as far as action and story goes....but so hard to watch (though Brienne vs Sandor was even harder for me to watch...had to keep pausing that one because it was more than my fangirl heart could take). Moira's death was harsh but an exciting scene.

Supernatural's 200th was amazing as was demon Dean! Though the scene that really got me...and shocked me into literal fangirl screams, was Gabriel's return (even though it kind of ended with wtf is going on?). Hope we will see him back again (he's my fave) :)

  60. I agree with the Mentalist #1 - my favorite show and that was the best moment of the series! Hooray!

  61. Nice list, with a lot of my favorite shows and moments from the Mentlaist, Good Wife, GOT, TBBT Revenge, HTGAWM and I'm completely on board with The Flash/Arrow Crossover, Arrow and The Mentalist ranking in the top 3. I also loved those scenes with Belle banishing Rumple and the collage of scenes in the finale that included Emma and Hook kissing outside the diner. However, I was a little bored by the entire Frozen story even though I loved the movie and the Regina and Robin Hood romance was actually the biggest low point of the season. The circumstances leading to their romance and the individuals who were hurt at their expense just seemed wrong and watching Robin care so little about his comatose wife (and mother of his child), made me truly dislike the character, especially when chose Regina. I hope Regina finds someone else and that he doesn't come back! .

To me, the Jeremy/Henry Parish reveal at the end of the first season was one of the biggest television surprises (I'm surprised it only made the spoilertv staff list). I was also surprised that the Damon Elena kiss was picked as the best TVD moment this season, It wasn't like it was their first kiss...they just kissed in the rain (was I missing something?) I thought the scene where Jo mets her twin siblings and we learned the whole story behind Kai's banishment was one of the biggest moments. I also thought that the most touching moment was seeing Damon finally expresses how much he had grown to care for Bonnie and acknowledging how much she had sacrificed for all of them. Other shows with great moments for me, were The Americans (last season's finale) amd Grimm and Orphan black (the last episode with all of the clones together).

    Christina leaving Grey's moment
How to get away with murder moments
And my fave - Emma/Hook kiss.... as it said everything that had been leading to that season 3 finale moment and reveal of the jolly roger
