'Kali Yuga' Recap and Review

Maybe I'm Crazy?

At the tavern, the one last thing Ichabod has left to do in the twenty-first century is karaoke. Abbie actually sounds great singing 'Crazy' and it's not a song I thought she'd sing. Jenny has noticed Abbie and Ichabod have been spending less time together as there has been some tension. One of the themes of this season has been the test of their friendship and the Angel fiasco a couple of episodes back really strained that. When Ichabod is looking at the songs to pick for karaoke, Ichabod mentions "Oops, I Did It Again" and is it just me or would we all absolutely love to see Ichabod get his Britney Spears on? Hawley has to go and we get a nice moment between him and Jenny. I actually really dig their little romance. It's really great to see the girls happy. So of course that will not last long.

Hawley arrives at a scrapyard where he meets Carmilla. It's Jaime Murray of Defiance whom I absolutely love! She's the woman who raised Nick and we get some backstory of why he's been a fly on the wall for the past decade. Carmilla needs his help with robbing Theodore Knox's estate. Fort Knox. It's life or death for Carmilla and she reveals she is now a monster! Hawley owes her. Jaime Murray still looks great with black eyes and pointy teeth. Back at the Tavern, it's Ichabod's turn on the karaoke. "Not exactly Billboard Top 100" Jenny says, and she's totally right. It's not exactly the riveting karaoke experience I was hoping for. I really wanted to see Ichabod let loose on some Nicki Minaj or something. Abbie and Jenny talk about Katrina, who Abbie admits was right about the Angel stuff. I do feel pretty sorry for Katrina. She gets so much stick from the Sleepy Hollow community but I quite like her. I understand partly why people dislike her but it's also hard to see the dislike coming from some of the characters in the show.
"Perhaps I should have done the one about the bass. About the bass." - Ichabod Crane
Hawley is a no-show which worries Jenny and they're about to investigate but there's a breach at the Archives. I had a feeling it would be Hawley anyway so they rush there. Everything is a mess and a movement has Jenny chase someone into the tunnels. It is Hawley which confuses Jenny and she still chases him even though he tells her not to. She runs into Carmilla who, after being shot by Ichabod and Abbie, turns full-on monster. Okay, so maybe she's not as attractive in monster mode. I love the costume, it's really freaky. She runs off leaving behind the arrow she was shot with and some very strange-looking luminescent residue. Looks pretty actually.

Can I just take a moment here too to say how much I love the opening credits of Sleepy Hollow. The score, the effects, what happens in it when it begins with Katrina lifting her arms up. So good!

Supercalifragalistic-SleepyHollow-docious

At a court hearing, Irving is being represented by his wife. The judge says the State isn't persuing any charges and with new evidence, Irving will be exonerated. That was really easy. Too easy. Something isn't right there. His wife is really happy until Irving says about going home with her and Macey. It seems to throw her off, and with good reason. At the Archives, Abbie, Ichabod and Jenny discuss the residue where Abbie already had it analysed without them knowing. It can burn through anything, like acid. Ichabod realises Carmilla is a Vetala, an undead human being of Hindu lore that serves the Goddess of death and regeneration. She's crazy fast, inhuman strength and is immortal. There's a small moment between Ichabod and Abbie where they seem to clash over what to do, but it's brushed under the rug. It's going to fester though.

Abbie and Jenny visit McKenna's place. Jenny has picked up on the tension again and calls Abbie out on it but she doesn't think there's a problem. "It's not going to stay small forever Abbie." McKenna comes and they ask him who paid him to set up Hawley. He won't talk, so sisterly love wins out and Jenny makes him talk by smashing his head into a glass display. I love this exchange between Abbie and Jenny, they are a fantastic team of sisters. McKenna blabs that it was Carmilla Pines who Jenny knows as a treasure hunter much more dangerous than Hawley. At the Archives, Ichabod is telling Katrina about Mary Poppins, which is a funny little exchange also. "Miss Poppins seems quite fulfilled." Ichabod says. I would love to see Katrina watch it and get her reactions. In fact, I want to see both Ichabod and Katrina watch every movie I love and see what they think about them. Ichabod sees the charm that the Angel gave Abbie a few episodes back which Katrina reveals that it calls an Angel. Another secret Abbie kept from Ichabod, further distancing the couple.

Abbie and Jenny arrive and reveal the name of Carmilla. Ichabod believes they will be going after Fort Knox as Hawley now has the blueprints. There's a vault filled with supernatural objects. Hawley and Carmilla discuss getting into the vault. Carmilla asks about the people in the tunnels but Hawley dismisses it. Hawley asks what happened to her and a bit more backstory is revealed. Hawley ran when he saw Carmilla kill someone and she went after him, she ended up in Mumbai where a death cult turned her into the Vetala. Fort Knox has an artefact that will return her to being a human. She begs Hawley to help her one last time. "One and done."

If You Like Pina Vetalas, and Getting Locked In a Vault

Ichabod is driving a really fast sports car with Abbie and Jenny. It's Hawley's and they're on the way to Fort Knox. There's going to be an event there so it's a perfect distraction while Carmilla can break in with Hawley. "At all costs, we must stay together" Ichabod says. Will they though? I'm sensing more storm in the friendship horizon. Irving is getting into bed with Cynthia when she voices her concerns, that he was dead. She needs to know if Irving is really there, to be sure that Irving is actually back. Cynthia suggests Katrina could help. Carmilla and Hawley are in Fort Knox when Abbie, Jenny and Ichabod arrive. They see Hawley and Carmilla but Hawley goes inside the house so Jenny follows while Ichabod and Abbie stay with Carmilla.

Unfortunately, a problem arises when Knox notices the bow that Ichabod has and begins to talk about it. Abbie needs him to come but he can't so Abbie goes on without him. Bad move Abbie. Hawley goes inside a room with a very tricky looking puzzle. It begins to open the door to the vault and it's actually really cool. Carmilla is now inside the vault, meaning our band of heroes failed to stop it. Jenny catches up with Hawley and they argue about fighting Carmilla. Hawley agrees to fight her but tricks Jenny and locks her in a room. Hawley says it's for her own good but she's going to be pissed.

Abbie catches up with Carmilla and stays back, watching as Carmilla looks around the vault. She gets a statue and Abbie shoots and misses. Nice reflexes Jaime Murray! She uses her superhuman speed to lift Abbie up by the throat. Ichabod arrives but the situation is dire. Hawley comes and tries to diffuse the situation by negotiating a deal. Hawley says he will stay with Carmilla if he leaves them alone and suggests locking them in the vault. Hawley says he will tell Knox they're in there but they need to get out quick. Ichabod recognises the statue and it doesn't turn her human, it's for a ceremony to turn humans into Vetalas. DUN DUN DUN!!!

Big Brother

Ichabod and Abbie argue over what the plan was, which they seem to have different ideas about. Ichabod is right though, they were supposed to stick together. Being locked in a confined space with someone really does make everything come out in the wash and secrets start coming out, like Abbie's failure to mention the Angel charm. Hawley and Carmilla toast over a victory and Hawley starts saying things like he shouldn't have left and he knows better now. Something is off with that, right? His eyes appear a little scared so he might just be saying that to appease her. We find out straight away actually as Carmilla doesn't believe him. She does something to make him faint and he realises it was a con.

Trying to get out of the vault, Ichabod notices a Liberty Tree on the door. A set of buttons appear that control the hinges. Each knob has a symbol and if they choose wrong, well, we all know what will happen. Thinking they could die, they decide to reveal they were each wrong and forgive each other. It's a nice moment and I hope this will be the last time they will have to "forgive" each other. They better make sure their bond stays intact by being honest with each other. Ichabod has a moment and uses history to press a button, thinking the answer to be iron. It's wrong. Uh, oh!

The wall on the far side reveals spikes and starts to close in on them. They actually look pretty far apart, they could have contorted their bodies to fit between the spikes. Abbie and Ichabod have a Star Wars moment - "they had a robot!" - as they try to figure out how to get out of the mess. Ichabod lists things that Knox loved and concludes with gold and pushes the right button just in time. Phew. I had no idea if they would make it out alive or not (that was a little sarcastic) but it was nice to see Abbie and Ichabod work together under duress to get out of it. Well done my friends, big pat on the back.

Ichabod is NOT going back to Yoga Class!

Outside, Abbie and Ichabod meet with Jenny and they conclude to track Jenny's cellphone which Hawley still has. They arrive at a building and Jenny leaves to patrol the perimeter, leaving Ichabod and Abbie to work together again. "Thank you yoga class." "I'm still not going back." Haha, amazing. The figure out that they can kill the "immortal" Vetala with iron and fire. Inside, Carmilla is performing the ceremony to turn Hawley and another person. Just an observation, Hawley's chest is so hairy! She starts to cut his flesh, which is very traumatic. It appears Abbie and Ichabod are taking forever to get there and save him. Ichabod fights with other Vetalas and Abbie goes in to help. It's a good fight sequence.

Ichabod lights an iron arrow that kills one of the Vetalas. Jenny saves Hawley by fighting with Carmilla but it appears Carmilla is winning until Hawley stabs her. He's about to finish her off but Carmilla dashes away. She may come back at a later point in the show which would be cool but it's a temporary victory for the gang. At the archives, Hawley visits Jenny. Jenny says he has a family in Sleepy Hollow which Hawley appreciates, but he's still leaving. He betrayed her trust and put her in danger so he's going to hunt Carmilla down. This might be the last kiss they ever have, or ever see each other again, so I thought I'd put the photo here for everybody to see.

I knew their happiness would be short-lived.

We end the episode in the Tavern with Abbie and Ichabod as they mend their fences and move forward. They start this new slate with a duet. Hells yeah! They're going to do Proud Mary, which is a good song. "That makes no sense". This is a fantastic moment. I absolutely love it and it's a much better song for Ichabod than the one he sung before. I can now tick the karaoke duet off my "list of things I want to see Ichabod do in the twenty-first century" list. I'd love to see the full thing, but we cut to Katrina and Irving doing that supernatural test. Cynthia is there too and Katrina warns her to stay back. Katrina asks Irving where Henry is as she believes him to still be alive but Irving is clueless. Katrina begins the test by having Irving drink something. Irving has flashes of things he did since signing his soul to Henry. Katrina reveals the magic that bound him to the Horseman is gone. Henry now has no influence on Irving's soul. But when Irving hugs his wife and looks through the window, he has no reflection.

Episode Verdict

It was another good episode of Sleepy Hollow though to me, it wasn't one of my favourites. I was glad to get some backstory on Hawley but since he has now gone (probably not permanently but most likely for the rest of the season) I think there may not have been any point to finding out about him at all. It could have been more interesting and nothing really took me by surprise. I'm confused about the whole Irving being alive thing which I'm hoping we get some clarification on by season's end. With the absence of his reflection, it means that something supernatural is going on, it's just something unrelated to Henry. I'd suggest vampire but he's been out in the sun, so he could be some ghost-like creature or something. Either way, I'm very keen to learn about what happened with him after he died. I enjoyed the several dynamics in this episode, including Abbie and Jenny which we don't see that much, and Abbie and Ichabod which we have seen tested in the past but I think we are now moving forward there since most of their secrets are now exposed and forgiven. I always love the exposure of modern ways to Ichabod and how he deals with them so the karaoke aspect of this episode, while it was predictable, it was such a joy to watch. I'm one of those people who enjoy Sleepy Hollow for what it is, an enjoyable entertaining show filled with the supernatural, so I don't really have any complaints about season two as a whole. I'm still loving this show and I look forward to more.

Irving isn't human any more, right? Do you think we'll see Hawley again? What did you guys think of 'Kali Yuga'? Let me know in the comments and be sure to watch the next new episode of Sleepy Hollow on February 2nd on FOX!

  1. Hope my first Sleepy Hollow review was okay! Apologies for the lateness but next week's will be on time 😄

  2. Your first Sleepy Hollow review was lots of fun. Well done. And I agree with you totally on many points , among them - I love the opening credits of SH too ( you are the first person I have seen mention them) and I also do not think all this year's criticism is completely justified because it is a show built to entertain as a fantasy with great humorous moments and thrills. It plays its role as such with panache. Folks have gone overboard with all the heavy Katrina this, Katrina that, etc. And I can never get enough of Ichabod vs. the 21st century.

  3. Thanks very much for your comment! Really appreciated! I'm relieved you agree with some of my points. More shows need great opening credits like Sleepy Hollow, and I agree with you completely on the criticism for the season not being completely justified. I think people are trying to take the show too seriously which they probably shouldn't do as it's really a fun roller-coaster ride filled with fantasy. Poor Katrina, I hope the writers can give her something that will make the criticism of her slow down. Haters gonna hate hate hate, right? Haha yeah, that should be a show in its own right - Ichabod vs. the 21st Century. I'm sure it would be a hit :D

  4. It's a good job I'm usually not on Twitter when the show airs then. I have said I do understand that her character has went a little downhill in Season 2, that the writers haven't given her much to work with and when they do, it's not always the best reflection of her character.

I get the whole trying to save Abraham thing was annoying, and it got annoying for me too when it was episode after episode, but I can understand where she was coming from. She is his mother and she wanted to save him by any means. It worked though as Abraham ended up doing the right thing and stopped the apocalypse. Kinda proved Katrina was right all along, right? Unless I watched it wrong? It's my take on it anyway.

I do like the whole villain idea though. Her powers are being wasted and she could be so powerful and bad-ass if she wanted to.

  5. I think you had a mini mind blip for a second there-- Henry/Jeremy is the son and Abraham is the Headless One

  6. Nice review!

Personally I really enjoyed the treasure hunter angle of the episode, it reminded me of ABC's "Veritas: The Quest" so I found episodes of those and have been rewatching. :) Also makes me think the show could have a spin-off centered around treasure hunting, it already has established a world of badass magic and monsters, all of which could work as well in various treasure hunting scenarios as it does in an apocalyptic one.

As an aside: I really liked Carmilla, hope she comes back eventually, after having murdered Hawley elsewhere, perhaps.

  7. I have never seen ABC's 'Veritas: The Quest', but sounds interesting. I did like the episode but I guess I wasn't so invested in Hawley's backstory. I like him as a character but I'm not invested in him so I wasn't really captivated by it. I did enjoy the vault scene though and other aspects of the episode. I would love more about the treasure hunting stuff though, can you imagine the possibilities of what adventures would await?

I like your idea about Carmilla coming back and having a big reveal of having murdered Hawley, that would be such a shocker for Jenny and would be so good to watch. Thanks for reading and commenting!

  8. You should see Twitter the night Sleepy Hollow airs, it explodes with criticism aimed at Katrina.

I liked her in Season 1, but I think her character has been completely ruined this season with the whole saving Abraham nonsense, me and a lot of fellow Sleepy Hollow fans (who I discuss the eps with) think that she should become the new big bad villain along with Abraham. That would at least give the character something better to do than to either be a damsel in distress or try to save a soul of a man who has tried to kill them on countless occasions.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh god, you're right! I had a stupid Gavin moment there, happens all the time! Thanks for correcting me. Now I understand it better! Yes, that does annoy me too actually, especially since the Headless Horseman is THE VILLAIN that should be fought and killed eventually. It could have happened by now. Having said that, I'm not really hating on Katrina for it. It was her fault he's not dead by now but I guess her only flaw is that she sees the good in people and she saw it in Abraham. I do feel pretty sorry for Katia Winter though, especially since she has to get a lot of flack from fans on Twitter and it's not really her fault. I guess my flaw is that I see the good in characters too and always look at it from different points of view and I can see it in Katrina's point of view.

I'm sure the writers have learned from their mistakes and we will get a better, more fully-rounded Katrina in the episodes to come and hopefully season 3 if the show is renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Abraham. If she became the new "big bad" she would get to use her magic a lot more.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Glad I am not in the Twitter-verse . I do wish they would show Katrina using her magic more, though. Did you mean Abraham the Headless Horseman or Henry/Jeremy the son , or both .

    ReplyDelete
  12. We ALL have those mind blips, not to worry. I feel sorry for Katia Winter too as she is just performing her scripts. She and Tom Mison are incredible looking together even if people do not like her character. I just hope she gets to use her witch magic more. Have we ever had a backstory on how she discovered her powers? I don't remember it being referenced.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don't think we have, but I agree with you about her and Tom Mison being incredible looking together. The episode before where they have their date night, wow, they both looked like the perfect couple. I would love to see more of her magic and use it in a way that saves the day more often.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Haha yeah sorry I am so bad with names sometimes. Totally got the wrong end of the stick there. I think Ichabod started to crack though too didn't he when he saved Abraham from the Angel, hoping there may be some good in him still as they were friends once. But I really hope they don't go there because he has done unforgivable things and he needs to return to being a serious villain. I hope you're right then, that Katrina will then stop taking a backseat and be more involved with the cases.

I guess Katrina doesn't have to turn bad but now you mentioned it, I kinda really wanna see that happen now haha. Doesn't have to be permanent and they can get her back to good (kinda like Dark Willow in Buffy). I really think FOX and the writers have realised they messed up with Katrina this season so if we get a season 3, things will be better.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I keep forgetting that it was Abraham who "killed" Ichabod on the battlefield before Katrina put the spell on him that resurrected him in our time.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I was wondering why in the other comment you mentioned Abraham when you were talking about Katrina's son Henry :)

She does see the good in Abraham when no one else does, but after all he has put them through it's quite frustrating to see her not willing to let him go, especially since Ichabod and others want him gone.

Katrina might not even have to turn bad for her character to get to do something interesting, if they just got rid of Abraham then she could go back to helping the team as recently she has taken more of a backseat role in the new "case" of the week.

I also feel sorry for Katia Winter, like you said its not her fault. She is a good actress, but deserves better material to work with.

Forgot to mention earlier, great review!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am terrible with names myself so don't worry about it.

A death is coming up this season that is permanent unlike Irvin's, so I have a feeling that the death could well be Katrina just to please the fans. That is part of the reason I want her to turn bad, as if she is the one to die why not let her go out in some style.

However if she sticks around then hopefully the writers can fix/listen to some fans to try to find a way to get her character back to the one that we all loved in Season 1 (preferably seeing her use more magic).

I am not sure when the death is,but the news was all over twitter a week or so ago, and its meant to be a major character death.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I didn't know about the permanent death so now I am worried it will be Katrina. I really hope not as that would be a very lazy way of fixing a problem and it's something that peed me off in The Walking Dead. If she is to die, then I'm with you on turning bad, she has to go out with a bang! At this point I am really seeing this death be Katrina as it would really only be between her or Jenny and I think Katrina's death would fuel the narrative more than it would if Jenny died as we'd have to see how Ichabod would move forward after all they had been through.

If it's Katrina, it would have to be in the finale as Katia Winter posted Instagram photos of the wrap-up of season 2 so she's definitely in the finale. Let's wait and find out but now I'm dreading and looking forward to it at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree It would be very lazy of the writers to kill her off, and they would certainly lose my respect if they did that.

It could well end up being Henry since I class him as a major character, since he is a series regular, but I'm hoping its not as I absolutely love John Noble.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh yeah, I guess I would class him one too though we haven't seen him so far since the mid-season finale. I think he's in the next episode though. I'm going to watch the screener for it tomorrow (Sunday) and do my preview and then I'll know for sure. But I guess it could be him, and I love John Noble too, ever since his role as Walter on Fringe. What a man!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes! I loved Noble on Fringe, Walter was my favorite character. I even selected him during last years SpoilerTV best character cup as part of my two nomination choices. He is one of my favorite TV characters ever.

I think Henry is indeed back next episode, I wonder what he plans to do now.

I look forward to reading your preview on it!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gavin! I haven't read one of your reviews in a while! Nice recap. This was a good episode with some fun light moments and a nice Hawley-centric subplot, I liked the Mary Poppins bit too. Ichabod using Mary Poppins to illustrate how a modern day witch might find fulfilment was adorable, although I had to agree with Katrina's skepticism. I love that he’s trying to find motivational stories about witches in order to inspire his currently unemployed wife. ……too bad they cancelled Witches of East End! Hmpphh! The karaoke part was fun, although an "All about that Base" duet would have been epic! I don't think Ichabod will ever be ready for Nicki Minaj, but thanks to you, I can't get this image of Ichabod serenading Katrina with "My Chick Bad" out of my head! Abby/Ichabod and Abby/Jenny
moments are always fun, especially when there is no angsting. And what's up with Irving? Is it really Irving, or is it Henry or Moloch in Irving’s body? Is Irving going to be the next big bad? I’ve noticed that it’s really hard to keep anyone dead in Sleepy Hollow and I’m not sure how I feel about that!

This episode was great, but it reminded me of how much I miss the lighhearted moments that were more prevalent in the first season. I think that if you ignore the extreme shippers and haters, some of the criticisms are valid. I’ve always found the Abbie/Ichabod dynamic to be one of the best things about the show (although I don’t ship them romantically. However, I also don’t think that the show can be sustained by focussing only on those two characters, and as much as I enjoy Ichabod, I think
that the writers rely too much on his character for all of the lighthearted moments. If they capitalized more on Abby’s great chemistry with characters like Jenny and Hawley (and stopped making Abby appear disgruntled whenever Ichabod worked with Katrina), then the shift in character dynamics wouldn’t be an issue for most (reasonable) people. .

I do feel bad for Katrina. While she doesn’t deserve the hate, I also think that some of the criticisms are valid. But that’s more a fault of the writing. It certainly doesn’t help that her character has been linked to some of the most depressing environments for the better part of the series and now that
she’s free, the writers seem to have a hard time incorporating her into the cast. It also doesn’t help that her only significant interaction outside of her marriage is with a creepy headless ex-boyfriend (who is a frenemy at best). It’s not a story that I find very interesting, and my guess that even if Mr. Headless were to encounter salvation, he’d still be dull (some things can’t be cured!). They could
also focus more on her adjustment to the 21st century as you mentioned, instead of having her appear completely unfazed by her new surrounding (why should Ichabod have all the fun?). I also think that they have yet to explore the full extent of her witchcraft. The bottom line is that if her increased screentime came with a more interesting story and better character development, then most viewers would embrace her character. Haters will just have to deal. I do think that there are extreme fans on both sides, though.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You're right, absolutely! I adore Abbie and I'd hope that people can just enjoy seeing these characters develop on the screen rather than hate on them and ruin their own experience of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gah, still not over Witches of East End haha. Sit Katrina down to watch that, I'm sure she'd love it! Haha, Ichabod serenading Katrina with that song would be epic! Never would have thought of that!
Agree one-hundred percent with you there about the episode and criticisms. I always love some serious drama but what I loved about season one too was how light-hearted it was too. Abbie/Ichabod is the best thing about this show and without it, it wouldn't be the show I love anymore. With Katrina, I never truly understood the criticisms until I posted my preview of the next episode haha. That was a revelation, but it's made me understand more and you're right, some of it is completely valid. She definitely needs more experiences like Ichabod with the 21st century, and fortunately the next episode, Spellcaster, explores her witchcraft and makes her so much more relevant to the cast. I just don't want people hating on the episode before they give it a chance just because they hate Katrina. It's a great episode.
But thanks so much for posting on my review and always nice to talk with you :D Miss your comments!

  25. Ha ha! I just read the next thread and I got so irritated with all the hate discussion that I've thrown all reason out the window! LOL. I can't stand these kind of fan wars, but I think that some people just relish in them!
