Robert's Mid-Season Review: Gotham, Grey's Anatomy, Person of Interest, The 100, The Walking Dead & More

Jan 3, 2015

The second half of the season is fast approaching, and I thought this would be an ideal time to reflect on my season so far, giving my opinion on all of my shows whether they have exceeded my expectations or failed to improve from last season. I won't go into too much detail as I could be here all day talking about them; I will just give you a brief overview of what I think.

I currently watch 12 Shows, with 3 having just ended their seasons. I have also dropped two shows which I don't normally do, but I couldn't force myself through another episode anymore, those two being Elementary and Resurrection. This season there has also been a vast amount of new shows, but only 4 new ones I have stuck with all the way through.

Now let's get on with the review, I will be going in alphabetical order. I will also give each show a grade from A-D with D being the lowest.

American Horror Story
Best Episode: "Orphans"

This Season has been somewhat of a disappointment, when it got announced that the new season would take place at a freakshow I was quite excited, but after watching the first 10 episodes I have to say this is probably the shows weakest season. The show hasn't been that scary or gripping, in fact for me the best part about the season has been the clown. He at least added the sense of fear, and horror to the show, so it was a shame when they decided to kill him off. I absolutely don't care about Elsa and her singing career, and the fact that all the freaks are being killed off, and none of them bother to question Elsa is utter rubbish especially after those who did question her previously ended up dead. Also the killing of Frances Conroy and Kathy Bates characters was beyond frustrating as they portrayed two of the more interesting characters. Frances Conroy in particular portraying Gloria has been excellent, her scenes with Dandy have been the best scenes from the first half of the season, so it is a shame we won't see any more of them. Another thing I continue to dislike is the constant need to create a love life for whoever Evan Peters portrays, is it really necessary or needed?

The quality has started to pick up a little in the last two episodes (9 and 10), and has become slightly more interesting to watch, but it shouldn't take this long to get good. The ratings in recent weeks have reflected the declining quality of the show with only 3m viewers tuning into the latest instalment. The show definitely isn't the hit it used to be.

Grade C

Gotham
Best Episode: "Lovecraft"

The batman trilogy is among my favourite films of all time, so I was excited when FOX announced Gotham. The first half of the season hasn't been perfect, but it has huge potential to become an established show that can last for a couple of seasons. So far I have really enjoyed what I have seen of Gotham, and after each episode I found myself wanting to watch the next one, but there are things that they do need to change. The quality is there, and most of the time it produces some really interesting episodes, but the dozen cast members underused and the brief appearances by some make it hard to get invested into a character.

I do like the weekly cases we get as it does keep the show fresh and without the need to re-use the same ideas, and it’s also a good way to introduce new villains, but the show needs to pace itself for it to work to full effect. Introducing a new villain in a mask each episode isn't always the best idea. I would much rather have one central villain in a story arc than seeing countless one time criminals who wear a mask. The best episodes for me have actually been the ones without a case of the week, these episodes were action packed and contained an intriguing storyline that had me hooked from beginning to end. More of them please!

Another downside I have with the show is the cast, there is way too much. Gotham fails to share the screen time between the cast meaning some episodes we don't see some of the regular cast or they make pointless appearances (cat). The show has so many interesting characters that have yet to really be explored (Riddler). I would like to see more of cast we already have explored, and there stories before we get introduced to new villains or more people (Harvery Dent, Scarecrow). They should just stick with the cast that they already have for now so we can get familiar with them, I mean I don't even know what Gordon's boss is called or Barbra's ex.

Whilst there are a few low points about Gotham, there are also some highs like Jada Pinckett Smith and Robin Lord Taylor's portrayals of Fish Mooney and Penguin. They both have been exceptional in their respective roles, especially Robin. Whenever he is in a scene I know it’s going to be good.

Grade C

Gracepoint
Best Episode: "Episode 8"

It was a thrilling series with lots of twists, and some decent acting, but it failed to change itself from Broadchurch. Whilst I wasn't expecting major changes from the original I expected a decent amount of changes to happen especially since Gracepoint was 2 episodes longer than Broadchurch. I felt let down by the lack of changes made, especially given that the only notable difference was that Tom went missing in one episode. I expected better. The writing for the finale was terrible, how they rushed to a confession from Joe Miller without any build up to it, then a sudden twist about how Tom Miller was the killer. It all seemed as if the writers had no idea how they were going to change the ending. The killer shouldn't have been someone from the Miller family, it should have been someone entirely different like the priest.

After the finale I have to ask myself what the point in making Gracepoint was if Broadchurch had already aired in America, it seems like a waste of money and time. I can't imagine what FOX will do to Luther when they "remake" it. One thing is for sure I won't be watching any more American remakes.

Grade D

Grey's Anatomy
Best Episode: "Only Mama Knows"

Grey's Anatomy is the oldest show I watch, I can't believe it is in its eleventh season! Last season we saw fan favourite Christina Yang depart, and everybody knew that her leaving would leave a hole in the show. Her absence can be felt a lot in the first couple of episodes, and they just don't flow as well as when she was around. The storylines this season have been very poor, and is just another sign that the show has long past its prime. All the characters that made me love the show have either died or left (Mark, Lexi, Christina, George, Addison) with the exception of Alex, it just doesn't feel like the show it was 5 seasons ago.

The introduction of Maggie was nowhere near the big storyline I wanted for Meredith, it feels like they have run out of ideas, and we are starting to see the same material re-used. The one benefit though of introducing Maggie is that it gives Richard something to do, since he was side-lined the majority of season 10. Speaking of Meredith I am tired of seeing her and Derek fight, and actually also Arizona and Callie. We have seen it all before, and it is time for some new material because it gets to the point where it isn't enjoyable to watch anymore. The two other characters brought into the show this season are Dr Herman (Geena Davis) and Amelia Shepard who have been welcome additions, and are perhaps some of the only good things to happen this season.

Another problem I have had for years on Grey's is the overwhelming amount of regular cast. Some characters who have been on the show for years (Owen, Bailey) are given little to work with in terms of storylines, and only make brief appearances for a few scenes here and there. They need to get a formula that actually works like it did way back in season 5 where every cast member would get a good amount of scenes and lines per episode. The other thing that has continued to bother me is the upping of Jerika Hinton to regular. What was the point in doing that if she says about 1 word per episode?

Grade C

How to get away With Murder
Best Episode: "Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me"

It was so hard to pick a favourite episode from the first half of the season since every episode has been phenomenal. Shonda Rhimes has somehow managed to create another masterpiece; she really is the queen of television. Every episode has been perfectly written, and each time the ending would come around of an episode it would be hard for me to take my jaw of the floor, each episode always ended with a bang that would leave me hungry for more. It is an addictive show, one that has me on the edge of my seat wondering what will happen next. Viola Davis rightly deserves her golden globe nomination, she has been phenomenal, and she completely nails every scene with a passionate and emotional response to whatever is happening. If she doesn't win for best actress then something has gone wrong there.

It will be interesting to see what the show produces in its last 6 episodes; I can only imagine what they have left in store for us. If the Mid-season finale was that good I can't imagine how the first season will end. Now that the "flash forwards" have caught up with current events, I am really intrigued to see what they plan to do next, since the flash forwards have played such an effective role in the telling the story so far. I have to wonder what they have up their sleeves to maintain the quality we have seen this far. Whatever happens I'm invested into the show for the long term.

Grade A

Once Upon a Time
Best Episode: "Shattered Sight"

This is a strange one, I have to be completely honest, which is that I haven't enjoyed the frozen storyline as much as I hoped I would. I absolutely loved Season 3B with the Wicked Witch, but this storyline hasn't really caught my attention much. I have been a fan of the show from season 1, and have loved it ever since, but I think it's the new formula they have started with splitting the seasons in half that isn't working that great for me. I do like though how we get a variety of different Disney villains, and heroes appearing on our screens which is a benefit to having split seasons, but I haven’t been that invested into this storyline all the way through, I felt that it went on for a little bit too long. I loved a lot of episodes such as shattered sight, but some felt like filler episodes with nothing happening that would keep my interest all the way through.

One of the things I did like about the frozen storyline though was the snow queen. I have been huge fan of Elizabeth Mitchell's since LOST and loved her on V and Revolution, so I was eagerly awaiting her first appearance. She did not disappoint, and every scene she was in I loved, she was fantastic. The last scene we saw of her even had a few tears coming from my eyes; I think I was sadder that we wouldn't be seeing Mitchell again than the snow queen sacrificing herself.

Grade B

Person of Interest
Best Episode: "The Devil You Know"

When Person of Interest ended its third season it was anyone's guess as to what was going to happen in the new season. Whilst some people argue that the quality of the show isn't the same as it was back in season 1 I would disagree. Some episodes yes haven't been produced to the best of the shows abilities or executed perfectly, but each episode has still been enjoyable to watch.

I knew it would take time to get use to the new layout of the show with their new cover identities, but I think the change has been good for the show. They needed to move forward with the Samaritan storyline, and what better way to do that than to show us how vulnerable the team can be. The team machine have been the ones running the show, taking control of situations, putting an end to criminals for seasons now, so it has been interesting seeing a much weaker team that hasn't got much control anymore.

The writing for the show has continued to impress, and the more powerful and action packed episodes have been right on par with previous seasons. The episode “The Devil You Know” has been a particular highlight this season. It was an emotional rollercoaster for Alias, but it was needed as it really got us familiar with Dominic and his means to be “king”. I have loved how the show is slowly introducing new players into the mix that could cause serious problems for team machine. I always love how they have more than one enemy each season; it unlocks a wide range of possibilities as to which direction the show is going to take next. The new layout has even allowed a little more character development to happen, although the side storylines such as John and his shrink are really scenes that I don't think are needed, I don't really care that much about them either.

Grade A

Sleepy Hollow
Best Episode: The Akeda

Sleepy Hollow’s second season hasn’t really been as good as season 1, but I have still enjoyed it. John Noble has been an excellent addition to the cast; he has been fantastic as the villain so I am really glad he got upped to regular not just because I miss Fringe. I continue to enjoy Abby and Crane’s interactions, and when Crane continues to be puzzled by things in the 21st century it always amuses me. Their relationship this season has developed further from season 1, and they continue to get closer to one another, watching them two share a scene always puts a smile on my face. I also like the continued interactions between Abby and Jenny, and getting to know a little bit about their mother was very interesting to see, and I am glad they explored more of her backstory. I do wish we saw a little more of Jenny though as she sometimes only shows up in episodes for a brief scene.

After the finale I am curious to see what will happen next, and where the show will go in terms of story. The season so far has been enjoyable, with some episodes matching the quality of season 1, but some failing to do that, still I have managed to enjoy every episode. Sleepy Hollow has become a show I look forward to seeing each week, and I cannot wait for its return!

Grade B

Sons of Anarchy
Best Episode: "Red Rose"

The final season of Sons of Anarchy was a strong one, especially on the acting side of things. The first 6 episodes felt like a slow burn, but the latter half of the season really picked up and produced some of the best episodes from the shows 7 year run. The final season wasn't light on action, and blood thirsty deaths; there was a lot of it. This season I am sure everyone can agree that the cast really upped their game in terms of acting, they were already good actors, but they all went above and beyond to deliver some of the finest performances in television. Katy Segal, Jimmy Smits and Charlie Hunnam were particular highlights especially in "Red Rose" and "Papa's Goods". They were emmy worthy performances, I can't believe this show didn't get any recognition from the Golden Globes. It's absolutely shocking.

I felt that the final season wrapped the show up nicely, ending things at a good time whilst also leaving nothing too notable left without a resolution. The final season also had its fair share of deaths, most of the deaths though us fans were begging Kurt Sutter to pull the plug on them characters seasons ago (Gemma, Unser), but whilst some were less surprising some of them really shocked me. The killing of Bobby in particular was absolutely shocking. He was the most decent, and level headed of them all, so it didn't feel right when they decided to kill him, he was the one person I thought was likeliest to survive. His death though did have a huge effect on Gemma and Jax, which surprisingly is when the season for me really picked up, so in a way Bobby's death helped the show to produce not only good episodes, but outstanding performances by the cast as well.

Grade B

The 100
Best Episode: "Spacewalker"

The 100 has now become one of my favourite shows, its story is compelling to watch and their constant struggle to survive always keeps me engaged. The writing for this season has been incredible; there have been some really powerful scenes especially between Clarke and Finn. Speaking of Finn his death was a complete jaw dropping moment, I was expecting him to pay, and possibly die, but for Clarke to kill him was shocking. That is another example of how good the show has become. The writers have taken season 1's material and completely moved the writing to a whole new level.

There has been much character development on the show which is always a good thing, and I really did enjoy seeing Finn’s dark transformation from someone who wanted to help people to a person who massacred a load of grounders. The show is exploring new territories I wouldn't have imagined it touching, and the high level of quality compared to season 1 is visible. They really have outdone themselves. The multiple storylines for the season have been excellent, and I honestly can’t say which one I have enjoyed more since I don't think I have disliked a single scene the entire season, it's been that good. The second half can't come quick enough.

Grade A

The Middle
Best Episode: "Thanksgiving VI"

The Middle has been my favourite comedy for a good couple years now, it is a shame it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. This season on The Middle Axel has gone to college, and whilst you would expect him to be around a lot less he isn't, The Middle manages to make it work. The characters are all growing up, and that doesn't affect the show one bit, in fact I would say the show is improving each season. Every episode this season has been jammed packed with comedic aspects built around a storyline, from taking Axel to college to Mike buying a Christmas tree.

Sue continues to be the standout amongst the characters, and if she said nothing the entire episode I would still laugh. Her presence in a scene is enough to make me pull a smile. The holiday episodes are always standout episodes for The Middle, and this season continued with that, perhaps one day they can have a normal Thanksgiving without the drama that the episodes tend to bring… probably not. The Middle is one of the shows I always look forward to, and can easily go back and watch a random episode and thoroughly enjoy it. Bring on more of the hecks!

Grade A

The Walking Dead
Best Episode: "No Sanctuary"

The Walking Dead continues to outdo its previous season year after year, and it continued with that tradition during the first half of Season 5. The writers have told another compelling chapter in the series with the Cannibals, and The Grady Memorial and the actors on the show make it even more enjoyable to watch. The actors really get invested into the material they have to work with, and deliver some emotional, yet powerful performances. Mellissa McBride continues to be the star of the show for me, week after week she continues to impress with her phenomenal acting, especially in them one on one interactions she shared with Norman Reedus's Daryl.

I need to try and remember not to get too heavily invested into a character, as it's at the stage now where anyone of them could die at any moment. I wasn't expecting Beth to die at all, when Rick arrived at the hospital and they made the exchange I thought they were all going to make it out of there, but sadly the show lost another talented actress with her characters demise. As far as the villains go for this half it really shows you how diverse the enemies are, with Dawn having a more complex background compared to Gareth being a complete lunatic.

I do like that the show is continuing with the formula used for 4B which is to break the group down into smaller ones, it allows us to get to know the characters better, and for more interactions between characters to take place, instead of all out action. The creative aspect of the show has really been upped from season 4, with them producing even more gruesome zombies, and higher quality sets. The Walking Dead is one of my favourite shows, and I look forward to seeing what they have in store for season 5B.

Grade A

Z Nation
Best Episode: "Doctor of the Dead"

After being the designated reviewer for the show I had to watch all the episodes, but it wasn't a punishment. I have actually enjoyed Z Nation for what it is, a comedic take on a zombie apocalypse. Z Nation did have a bit of a rocky start to the season in the first couple of episodes with everything out of place, and the episodes not flowing as well as they should have, but at around episode 5 things started to pick up, and the show seemed a lot better. The episodes became enjoyable once they started to make sense, and I did start to get invested into the mission and the show.

As the season progressed everything I had mentioned in my reviews that I wanted to see changed seemed to take effect, such as the toning down of Citizen Z. I hated when he would briefly make an appearance that was irrelevant to the episode, it is a either a conscience or the writers were reading my reviews. The show wasn't made to be a serious one, so if you going into an episode with a picture of The Walking Dead in mind you will leave disappointed. It is more of a wacky Zombie show that is made purely to entertain you, whilst offering a half decent story-line. This is exactly what it does.

  2. My tv season has improved a lot since last year I have pretty much the same opinion about everything in the article I think Grey's has sadly over stayed it's welcome also I thought season one of the 100 was amazing but after watching this season it makes it seem like season one sucked! Great article

  3. I agree with the review of Sleepy hollow,The 100,HTGAWM,Gracepoint & Gotham but completely disagree regarding GA,OUAT & AHS-TFS.While GA was nowhere near the quality of their earlier seasons, still they manage to pull pretty decent episodes week after week,Although i agree with your opinion about Maggie. As for OUAT,i also liked the Wicked Witch track last season but the frozen track-i absolutely loved it.Elsa, anna & snow queen-all of them were wonderful & brilliantly cast.As for AHs,i can definitely say it has improved immensely from last season.I also dropped Elementary this year,so you're not alone. As for resurrection,i'm still struggling to determine whether to watch a show whose rating went from 3.8 to 0.8 in a matter of less than one full season.
    Great review!

  4. Amazing. Saw a lot of good new dramas this year. My favorite new show was The Leftovers. Phenomenal in every aspect. Second would be True Detective. Some of the best acting in a show period. Third would be The Affair. Never would have a thought a show like The Affair would be so good.

  6. High five on AHS. Yes, yes yes. The past couple of episodes have been more interesting after the dullness of the middle episodes. I mean, those episodes did have their moments but this just hasn't been a memorable season at all. Agree with Gotham's cast, we get so little of some of them in one episode, then a fair amount in another, it's pretty inconsistant. I get chills when Fish and Penguin share a scene, you're right that both actors are just amazing. They just have an electric chemistry that's so mesmerising to watch.

I too think I'm done with American remakes unless they appear to be a lot more convincing than Gracepoint was. Yep, the acting was fantastic, but overall there was just no point. Just another blip on the radar of television. I still enjoy Grey's Anatomy but you are right about several things there. The show is in desperate need of new material as it's really just a relationship-problem-of-the-week, which is always acted brilliantly, but yeah, Season 5 is my favourite season and I would love them to go back to those days. Very right about Owen. Haha yeah Jerika Hinton needs to say more.

I had the same problem with picking my fav episode of How to Get Away With Murder so far so I'm glad you picked the same as me haha, it was so hard to choose. Totally baffled as to what could possibly happen next but I'm so excited to see this unravel. And with Once, I love Frozen, I'm a bit obsessed so I did love the inclusion, but I can see why people wouldn't have been too pleased with it, so I won't judge :P I will miss Elizabeth Mitchell, she was fantastic in the show! I cried too and some of it was because we were losing Elizabeth. Damn it. Always lose the good ones.

Let's raise a glass to John Noble on Sleepy Hollow! He is just so damn good. Glad you're not one of those people who are criticising Sleepy Hollow in its second season. People just need to sit back, relax and be entertained because that's what the show does. Wish we saw more of Jenny too, I loved the actress in Nikita so it was nice to see her more included in Season 2.

I kinda wish the group in Walking Dead would just stick together because it's like a family and I want them all to be safe forever and ever, but that doesn't make entertaining TV haha so I have loved when they've broken off and been given their own little storylines or moments away from the hustle and bustle of a big cast. But when our heroes unite, oh boy, they unite! They're an amazing team and I love them all! Definitely the best group in the show, but I am so bleep-ing devastated that they killed Beth off. SO CLOSE TO REUNITING WITH MAGGIE! Not happy. But that's what Walking Dead does best, kills off characters once we become emotionally attached just to laugh in our horrified faces. I kid, they don't laugh, but the deaths on the show do fuel storylines so I can't be too mad that they killed someone. Now we're down Bob and Beth, I just hope Season 5B won't feature a death where I will literally go out and do something drastic in retaliation because my poor little heart can't take it anymore.

Agree with Z Nation too. It's a breath of fresh air amongst the chaos of the zombie franchises of today since Walking Dead exploded onto our screens. It's been so interesting and hilarious to see what a comedic take on the zombie apocalypse is like (not counting films or Shaun of the Dead would be unbeatable). You did a great job reviewing the show and I look forward to Season 2! Woohoo!

Fantastic post Robert. Loved hearing your thoughts on the show. I bet we would have long conversations about them should we ever bump into each other.

  7. Great review Robert! I agree with The 100 and HTGAWM, these are the best shows I'm watching right now. Their returns can't come soon enough!

I was still planning to watch both Broadchurch and Gracepoint, but after having read this I might as well skip Gracepoint. Is there any reason I should watch it? Strong acting?

Also, Person of Interest is high on my watchlist and I hope I'll be able to start with the show soon.

  8. I completely agree about HTGAWM and Gotham!
HTGAWM has been superb. As you said, Robert, it always ends with something jaw-dropping. The winter finale was one of the best Winter finales on television next to Revenge and Scandal. Viola has been so amazing and also jack falahee has been pretty good as well. Great show, I am anticipating its return.

About gotham: i agree 100%. The show is good and has potential. It Has some good actors (Ozwald) and actually many creative storylines that are not developed or used correctly. The could make Cat a bit more interesting and concentrate more an the Main cast and tell us something about their past so we Start feeling sth for them. Also there are episodes where i find myself Almost falling asleep and those are mostly the procedural ones. What this show needs are more serialized stories. Serialized episodes like the Penguin's umberella and the winter finale were the best which was also seen in terms of ratings

  9. do you like David Mazouz at the least?

  10. My time season has been extremly good. Shows are getting better and better and i am anticipating their return, Especially revenge this sunday. Cannot wait!!!

  11. Yeah, however, I think they are actually going in the right direction with his storyline

  12. Well I disagree on Grey's, I think it's being one of the best seasons so far since maybe season 8 (season 9 was ugh, and season 10 only got better with Cristina's storyline). I'm really enjoying the new characters (Maggie and Amelia) and the episodes more focused on one or two characters at a time.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Pretty good actually and about to get better as most of my favourite shows air at the beginning of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  14. You watch revenge, right?

  15. Glad to hear it! I have a few shows returning from hiatus, as well as some beginning their new seasons as well. There is also a few new ones I plan to check out.

  16. How to get away with murder is the show I am most looking forward to it's return, it has been one of the best new shows to premiere for a long time. I am also so tempted to start watching Scandal especially since I love her other two shows, I just need to find some time.

As for Gotham I am glad you agree! I completely agree with you about the serialized episodes over procedural episodes. I look forward to the show each week, but it has on two occasions nearly made me turn my TV off, one of them episodes being Spirit of the goat which was really poor.

If the writers take a look at the ratings they can see which episodes are catching on with viewers, and they should take into account what the viewers like, as seeing another boring case of the week doesn't help the ratings or help get people invested into the show especially if that case is a dull one that ends the same as the others.

  17. He is a great actor, and portrays a good character. I love Bruce and Alfred's interactions this season, they have been great.

  18. Out of your list I watch Hannibal, The Strain, The Following, Game of Thrones, Helix and Fargo. I was actually going to mention them in this, but decided to keep it just for shows that started from September on wards.

Sons of Anarchy and Game of Thrones as your top 2 are great choices, I would definitely have both shows in my top 4.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If I am really honest I just miss Christina on the show, she was one of the reasons why I always look forward to seeing Grey's each week. The focusing on a few people can be good, but when we don't see some of the regular cast for 2 or 3 episodes in a row is just bizarre. (April, Jackson).

I like the new characters too! I like Maggie, and have enjoyed her scenes, I just don't like the storyline about her being Meredith's sister.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Glad to hear it!
Grey's Anatomy I don't think it will ever get back to being as great as it was a couple seasons ago, but all I ask for is interesting storylines that we haven't seen before.

I completely agree about The 100 has really taken itself to another level in terms of quality, acting, wring, in fact just about everything. Season 1 feels like a different show when compared with this season.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks! The wait for The 100 and HTGAWM's return is killing me! Like you they are the two best shows that I am watching, there seasons have been incredible.

As you haven't watched either Broadchurch or Gracepoint I would go for Broadchurch, nothing beats the original. The acting on that is much stronger than what it is on Gracepoint, and also the ending is much better.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ok but i'm confused with your response do you like the direction they're going with or...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Nice article. I think Gotham has been really poor. Robin Lord Taylor's Penguin is the only reason I'm still watching the show. The Bruce Wayne story is uninteresting and Bruce is just plain annoying. I'm still yet to figure out what purpose Fish serves on the show, other than being an annoying character. I can see that they're trying to improve things but as yet it's failing to come off.

Agree with what you say about HTGAWM and POI. POI has been amazing in season 4 so far.

Also agree with what you say about The 100 and TWD. Though I'd say about TWD that the final two episodes of 5A were weak. Beth's death was handled terribly. But the previous 6 episodes were fantastic, and it's easily the best half-season to date.

    ReplyDelete
  24. There have been some good episode's this season on Grey's, but I don't find the show as consistent as it was a few seasons ago where I would love every single episode. They could have still brought Maggie in, just not have her revealed to be Meredith's sister.

Whilst AHS Coven wasn't great at all, it at least was a bit scary, and half-decent to watch. This season hasn't been that enjoyable, and I feel that the show has been going downwards ever since Asylum. I am hoping in the last few episodes it improves a lot, but as even though it has been renewed I fear that people might not return for the next season given were down to below 3m now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Glad you agree with so many of my points! I think AHS has been going downwards ever since Asylum, they just haven't been as good as that or season 1. I don't find it that scary anymore either, well not like it use to be. The show has picked up a little in the last few episodes, and I am hoping the last few of the season are going to blow my mind. (probably not).

I still love Grey's I just find this season to be inconsistent, some episodes would be really good, where as others not so much. I think the absence of Christina is the main problem for me, she was the heart and sole of Grey's and without her it just doesn't feel the same. One episode Jerika Hinton said "Got it" and that was it. lol.

The main reason I chose the mid-season finale over the other HTGAWM's episode is because we finally found out who killed Sam, which is what I had been looking forward to ever since we found out he got killed, but the way they showed us, with Keating sitting at her desk will stick with me for a long time.

As for Once Upon a Time, I don't really know why I didn't enjoy it as much. I got a little bored when watching a few episodes which hasn't happened before with the show. So it came as a surprise to myself. Some episodes have been amazing that have left me speechless, whilst others didn't impress me at all. I am too sad Elizabeth Mitchel is leaving, I really hope she gets another show as she is a fantastic actress.

The Walking Dead always continues to improve upon it's previous season which is just incredible since when it produces episode like "The Grove" you wouldn't think they could top that, but they do. I have lost so many favorite characters on the show that it's at the point where I need to try and not get invested into a character, which is really hard as the show gives you so many reasons to. The most devastating death for me was Hershel. I loved the character, and was so mad when he died.
The sad thing is we can expect another 1 or 2 deaths in the second half as it has been described as the shows "most brutal season" by producers. I too hope that it won't be anyone that I really like. Carol is my favorite on the show so if she dies I will literally throw my remote at my TV. I don't think I could handle another favorite character dying.

John Noble is always terrific in whatever he does, I am just hoping he is on-board with the show for more than one season.

P.S As I am writing this Karen David (Galavant) just followed me which is amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Agree!! Spirit of the Goat also Made me Almost turn off the TV. Also, Balloonman was very Poor and terrible written. Let us hope it gets better.

    ReplyDelete
  27. With bruce, yes. The "however" did not fit in my sentence

    ReplyDelete
  28. I actually really like Fish mainly because of the scenes she has shared with Penguin, which have been fantastic. The most annoying character on the show for me has to be Barbra, I really hate seeing her make a pointless appearance each episode declaring her love for Gordon constantly.

It is a shame more people are not tuning into POI as it really is one of the best shows around at the minute. As for TWD episode 7 "Crossed" I thought was the weakest episode of the season, but the finale I thought was excellent, and played out just the way I had imagined (Minus Beth dying). It really surprises me how the show continues to improve, I can't imagine what they have in store for us in season 5b.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If the show builds upon it's finale then I am sure it will keep getting better. With Gordon now working at the asylum it will be interesting to see what happens with the cases of the week, as I think seeing just Bullock handle a case wouldn't be that interesting. Funny enough Balloonman was the other episode I didn't like, and I agree it was terribly written.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Agreed again :) the asylum storyline will be very interesting and i think they are going in the right direction with bruce. Nice to see that we agree on Balloonman as well. The mid season finale was IMO pretty good though so i hope thr finale will as well

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah, her scenes with Penguin have been good, but other than that she isn't a great character. But at least we agree on Barbara being a pointless character.

Yep, POI is the best show on tv currently. Yeah, Crossed was weak, but as a midseason finale set-up I wasn't expecting much else. 5B should be good.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Whatever the show decides to do I will continue to watch, since I loved the Batman movies, but they better produce some more creative episodes than the likes of "The Balloonman".

    ReplyDelete
  33. I hope we don't have to see Barbara again or her annoying ex girlfriend, but we probably will since they both are series regulars.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I do, though I'm a casual viewer really, its never top of my list to watch though I tend to enjoy it most weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sorry, but I completely disagree with you about Grey's. I think this is the best season since season 8, and I love the new characters. Interestingly, I prefer today's Grey's to the first seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like all the new characters including Maggie, I just don't like the storyline they have given her and Meredith, as I have seen it all before with Lexi. I loved Season 8 a lot, and half of season 9 was good. I don't dislike the season as a whole, I just think that it has been inconsistent, some episodes I found to be really good, whilst others failed to keep me interested all the way through which is a shame since I have been a fan of the show for ages now.

That is interesting you would say that, is there a particular reason why you prefer Grey's now compared to earlier seasons?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think I will have to try Revenge one day since I see you everywhere speaking highly of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I still haven't got round to watching The Affair, saw the first episode and thought it was excellent, but had so many shows returning it didn't become a priority. I will probably catch up with that sometime this month.

    ReplyDelete
  39. A huge fan of Liz too, I watched OUAT because of her and as you said, she didn't desappoint us, as always! Shattered Sight and Snow Queen were my favorite episodes, Snow Queen was such a special villain on Once:) btw, her last name is Mitchell, double "l" ^___^

Besides I also watch Gotham and How to get away with murder. I think Gotham is actually getting better and better so I'm still looking forwards to see what's gonna happen next. Totally agree with your review of HTGAWM, it's the best new show in 2014 imo, just brilliant!!n

    ReplyDelete
  40. That Would be great :) oh yes i love that show!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. good list. I gave up on Bates Motel after a few episodes into season 2 and The Strain after 1 episode. Does Bates Motel get better as season 2 progresses? I'm tempted to give it a second try.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Person of Interest should definitely be a top priority. Best show on TV.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I have added the extra l, writing this at around 12am probably did help with remembering the correct spelling of names ;) I will really miss Elizabeth, she has been the shows best villain. I really hope to see her in something else in the near future.

Gotham is slowly improving from it's early episodes, and I am too looking forward to see what they have planned for the second half of the season. The promo for the episode looks great, so I am hoping it will be!

HTGAWM has completely won me over, from the original trailer I didn't think I would like it, but I was completely wrong. It has blown me away with how good the writing, and acting is. It is definitely the best new show of 2014 by a long mile.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The show ended for me season 9 really with all my favorite characters being dead it really brought down the show!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Barbara's ex is Detective Renee Montoya. She's in the comics (though not as Barbara's ex). She's worn the superhero mantle of The Question. She was one of the usual detectives in Batman: The Animated Series too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I thought so. I tend to think a show gets really good in season 2 and I'm really looking forward to season 3 since they added Ryan Hurst to the cast this year.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I know I technically included a comedic game show with @Midnight but I don't laugh harder during any other show and I felt like it deserves recognition. Same goes with Last Week Tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  48. GA has a special spot because it is one of the first series i watched so many years ago and has been the longest so far. By far my favorite season of GA is S5. Nothing has top that season finale, that final Meredith Speech, those last 5 minutes. not the shooting, not even Yang leaving.

This season has been a little bit off, it's true they are doing the sister thing again but Maggie brings something good to the equation of the show.

My favorite thing about this season is having Amelia there. "Can We Start Again, Please?" for me, it's the best of the season so far.

And i agree with you I hate what they are doing with Bailey, she hadnt had a good plot line since i dunno how many seasons. Last season she had the bacteria ont he gloves thing but that didnt last long and since then well.....

AHS: I go into every season of AHS not having a lot expectations on the "horror" part of the show

I think that since Murder House the show hasnt been that "scary" but i have enjoyed each season. This one is more about the WTF part of it than anything that will make you pee your pants in fact my favorite episode is "Orphans" and may be as well one of the best of the whole series.

I agree as well on OUaT. I was excited for the frozen storyline but after a couple of episodes. it wasnt what i was expecting and i just wanted it to end. Elizabeth Mitchel add was good i liked the role she played but sadly it wasnt as good as the wicked witch.

They have the same problem as GA. there are too many characters and not all get the chance to do anything just one or two lines and then they are gone.

It has been a great year for tv there are too many great shows but i cant watch them all.
The 100 is having a great season i was expecting Finn to be saved and seeing him being killed by Clarke was a good and great surprise.
HTGAWM: it's was surprise after another. This first part of the season was insane and deserves all the praise it's getting.
This was a great review! i hope you have a haoppy new year (tho it's Jan 2) it still counts :p

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is one of the reasons I haven't enjoyed this season as much as the previous ones.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I didn't know that at all, so thanks for sharing that with me! At least her character can develop a lot if they use the source material then.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thank you, glad we agree on so many things!

I have been a big fan of the show for ages now, and I too loved season 5. I do like Maggie, and she is a good addition to the show its just I wish they didn't introduce her as Meredith's sister. I would much rather her come into the show with either having no relation to anyone or being related to someone other than Meredith.

Bailey doesn't have much to do these days, and even when she does it is usually a minor storyline like her trying to exercise this season, and the bacteria one last season. Things that we don't really care that much about. It is a shame as she played such a huge role in the first 6 seasons, and you would think the writers would give her some better material to work with.

With AHS, I got into the show based around horror, which is what made it great for me as it was something different from other shows. So I have really been disappointed by the last two seasons of the show, but hopefully next season will bring back the horror aspect of the show.

Glad we agree on OUAT! I have loved the show since season 1, but just couldn't get invested into the frozen storyline enough for me to want to watch the next episode each week, in fact I found myself behind on a few episodes at one point. The Wicked Witch was more evil than the snow queen, but Elizabeth brought a much better performance to the show with her character. Every scene she was in was powerful, and filled with emotions. (I think at least) That is a really good point about OUAT, now I think about it both it and Grey's share the same problem. I can't remember the last decent storyline the charming's have got, and we have hardly seen anything of Will.

HTGAWM and The 100 have both had excellent first halves, and I can't wait for each of them to return. They are two of the best shows currently on air.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, to be honest, I can't really explain, and I really think that I am the minority here, because everyone likes the earlier seasons more. I didn't particularly mean this season, but Grey's from S6. I think it's because I love serious shows more, that are dramatic with life-lessons. I also loved the lighthearted, funny seasons of the show, and I wouldn't mind if it had a bit more humor today, but I prefer the dramatic Grey's over the "sitcomish" one. :) Also, I don't know if anybody else sees it this way, but I really like how the show has evolved. At first, the characters were "students" and it was all fun and laughter (like childhood and school years in life), than as the characters (and the show) got older, things became more and more serious, like when you become an adult. :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. The Middle, #HeckYeah!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  54. You are not alone, I have also enjoyed seeing these characters grow up on the show, and evolving; going from Intern to a resident. It was one of the reasons I have gotten so heavily invested into the show, as I wanted to see them make it into residency. If the show would have started at the point where they were all residents it wouldn't have been as good.

    ReplyDelete
  55. What new show should I watch this season in 2015? I watch any genre as long as it is great TV.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I see the Shonda Rhimes Channel (SHC) coming to cable lol

    ReplyDelete
  57. -I agree in Gotham some characters just don't get a good amount of screentime and Jada and Robin act phenomenal on the show.
-HTGAWM is amazing. Its my favorite show. Its written well and is always jaw dropping.
-The 100 is also one of my favorites. I watched S1 on Netflix at 12am and has to force myself to go to to sleep at 4am. It was just so compelling. And S2 is really good as well. Finns death wasn't surprising tho. Its was a great death.
-The Walking dead is another favorite. Anyone could die. But I don't like how the group keeps separting. It just means we only get to see certain characters in certain episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  58. New coming in 2015, or new for you but already airing?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Out of new shows I would recommended Man Seeking Woman, it is entertaining from beginning to end, Jay Baruchel is hilarious as Josh Greenberg and I think it can definitely become a new hit comedy.

Out of shows already airing I would strongly recommended How to get away with murder.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I hope it is something the writers of Gotham change for the second half, as I really want to see more of The Riddler, as the scenes so far with him have been really good.

HTGAWM, The 100 and The Walking have had excellent season's, The 100 in particular has completely outdone itself this year when compared to last season from the writing to the acting everything has been taken up a notch, and is slowly becoming my one of my favorite shows.

HTGAWM has had a phenomenal season so far, the writing for the show has been amazing, and Viola Davis has nailed every single scene with a powerful, and emotional response. It is my favorite new show, and something I can see lasting for loads of seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I agree with everything. There's only one minor thing I don't like about the walking dead. Its how sometimes the peoples blood look like light red fast moving syrup. Thats just how it looks to me

    ReplyDelete
  62. I'm gonna check out The Whispers, Secrets & Lies, Eye Candy, iZombie, The Messengers, Galavant, Fresh off the Boat, American Crime and Allegiance.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Galavant. I just saw the first episode of it, and it was much better than I thought it would be. Also Fargo and Hannibal both quality pieces of television.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Galavant is very good, I am sure you will love it!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I don't really pay too much attention to the blood, so I haven't really noticed that, but I will keep my eyes open for it next time someone dies.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh I agree on the lack of Japril this season, they are my favourite couple on the show! Nice talking with you!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Nice talking with you too!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I respect your opinion, but I feel like freak show is 2nd best out of the 4 so far, with asylum topping it. I don't think AHS is on a downward spiral at all. The best season, asylum, was the lowest rated. Coven, and also murder house, are more appealing to teens, and hence higher demo ratings, freak show isn't going for that audience.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Its really minor and doesnt effect my opinion on the show and its not all the time so I'm fine with it

    ReplyDelete
  70. I wasn't really a regular viewer of Bates Motel during Season 2, but now Ryan Hurst and Tracy Spiridakos will be in it I defiantly will be. They both were my favorites on each of their previous shows.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I can understand where you are coming from, but I still think that Murder House was better than this, yes this season isn't really about the horror aspect of the show, but season 1 is what got me into the show. Then the show had a really strong season 2, and then we got Coven. Which was really bad for the majority of episodes, with the exception of a few.

This season I have enjoyed the great acting by some of the cast, but I haven't at all been that interested in what has been going on (storywise). I would like to see a bit more about Paul the Illustrated Seal , Amazon Eve and all the others instead and their backgrounds instead of it just focusing heavily on Elsa and her character's background. Which is why I said the show isn't really improving much.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I agree with a lot of your opinions!

For Gotham - I'm actually really loving this show, (I love anything DC related though, so I may be biased), and I've loved seeing Jada and Robin play their characters. In fact, I love most of the cast's acting. I really love Camren's portrayal of Selina/Catwoman, reminds me of Michelle Pfeiffer. I think they need to flesh out their characters more equally though, as you kinda said. But other than that, I'm loving it!

For HTGAWM - What an amazing show! Viola's performance is just phenomenal, and deserves a few awards for her skills. The plot is always intriguing, however I'm concerned with how they're going to continue the show at such good quality now that some mysteries have been shown.

For Once Upon A Time - I actually stopped watching this half of the season. I know what's happened on the episodes, so I'll be able to watch the next half of the series and know what's going on. But I really didn't like the Frozen addition, it was obviously a money grab and i think that showed through the quality of the first half of the season. I feel there needs to be more attention to the main characters too. There were some episodes, like the one with Hook's evil hand? That I found completely unnecessary, and that it could have been used for the main characters more. Also, I thought some of the character development has been a little off. Hopefully with the evil trio joining the show it can pick back up again.

For The 100 - What an amazing show! It just gets better and better, there's not really anymore to say on that. I too was shocked that it was Clarke that killed Finn, but I understand the reasons. It's truly gripping and i'm looking forward to it returning.

For The Walking Dead - I've actually really enjoyed this season, however I'd love to have some more Rick Grimes. This season truly lacked our 'officer friendly' and also Michonne, who are my two favourite characters. But I've loved nearly each episode. And, this will be an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed the mid season finale too, I think it was because I wasn't completely attached to Beth as well, but none the less I thought it was good. I'm becoming more and more concerned for Glenn however, I feel like he's going to be going soon sadly.

I'm yet to watch POI, but I've been told many times that I should watch that, breaking bad and true detective. So I'll watch that when I have the time. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. I do like Gotham, and do look forward to it each week, but I really get frustrated when some characters only get about 2 minutes screentime per episode, mainly the Riddler, but that has started to change a bit in the last few. It especially annoys me that Barbara takes a lot of screentime, and doesn't really add anything to the episode she is just always there to ask how Gordon's days been. I think some of her scenes are not needed.

I am in agreement with you about HTGAWM. I am not sure what they plan to do know especially since the flash-wards played such a huge role in the storytelling of the events that happened. It will be interesting to see if the quality of the show takes a dip or if they manage to keep it the same without the flash-forwards.

I skipped 2 episodes this season one being the "Hook and Emma date" episode. I just couldn't get into the frozen storyline. I also haven't liked how main characters such as Henry, David and Mary Margaret have all had nothing to do so far this season. It seemed to be centered on the frozen characters, which is what was meant to happen I suppose, but I would have preferred to see David etc involved a bit more in the episodes.

I wasn't heavily shocked they killed Beth of especially as there was a Beth centric episode, which ultimately means that character is going to die. As Merle and Hershel both had an episode based around them before they died. I did like the finale though, but I think most people didn't like it because Beth died. I mean there is now a petition to bring a dead character back...

I did a death prediction for this show after the first episode had aired, and predicted Maggie or Glenn will die this season especially after the burning of the picture last season.

Person of Interest is very good, my fourth favorite behind Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and The Middle.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I agree with Freak Show. I liked Coven a zillion times better even! I'm interested to see how the rest of the season plays out, but ugggggggg. All of the characters I did like are now gone, especially Twisty!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Grey´s Anatomy: I want the final since season 8 but this season "watchable".
How to get away with murder: SO addictive and great
    The Walking Dead: Excellent
Gotham: The last episodes were awesome

This are the show I watch from the list

  76. Great. I loved HTGAWM and Hindsight so far.I started watching HIMYM. Continue to watch TWD, Helix, Mom, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Helix has been good, I really enjoyed the latest episode. The Walking Dead continues to impress me with how much it builds in quality each season.
