CBS led this first Monday in January, besting No. 2 ABC by 30 percent in the household overnights with its line-up of “2 Broke Girls” (6.1 rating/9 share), compatible “Mike & Molly” (6.2/ 9), freshman hit “Scorpion” (7.7/12) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (7.1/12), which was 122 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Hostages” (3.2/ 5 on 1/06/14). Each of the four Eye net series finished first in their time periods.
But the more interesting story, actually, was the season-premiere of “The Bachelor” on ABC versus the time period premiere of “Celebrity Apprentice” (two episodes) on NBC. Head-to-head, “The Bachelor” had the overnight advantage, with a 5.4/ 8 from 8-10 p.m. (and a 5.4/ 8 as well for this expanded edition from 8-11 p.m.). Comparably, however, that was only eight percent above the 5.0/ 8 for the two episodes, on average, for “Celebrity Apprentice.” And “Celebrity Apprentice” built by eight percent from its 4.7/ 7 return this past Sunday, and that translated into a very sufficient 6.79 million viewers and 2.4 rating/7 share among adults 18-49 (based on the fast affiliate data).
While still certainly an option, “The Bachelor” slipped by 10 percent from the 6.0/10 in the overnights for the year-ago season-opener (which translated into 8.65 million viewers and a 2.7 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, based on the live plus same day data). Stay tuned for the demographic results, which should result in a close race between the two.
Despite the solid lead-in support, NBC’s freshman “State of Affairs” dipped to a distant third-place 3.1/ 5 from 10-11 p.m., which held only 60 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of “Celebrity Apprentice” (5.2/ 8). Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.
Elsewhere, Fox’s demo friendly “Gotham” scored a typical 4.7/ 7 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (#4), which was 12 percent above failed year-ago occupant “Almost Human” (4.2/ 6 on 1/06/14). But “Sleepy Hollow,” which is suffering from a sophomore slump, sunk to a 2.7/ 4 at 9 p.m. (#4).

Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

CBS looks great! Scorpion grew quite a bit from Mike and Molly, and that might be one of the best HH ratings the show has had. Also, is that a season high HH for NCIS: LA?

I fully expected CBS to hit highs last night and based on the HH they did so, let's see what happens. No analysis on NBC or ABC from the HH, I can't really read them. Ditto for FOX.

I am sure not even NBC expected it to do this well. The Bachelor did amazing as well but that was to be expected. CBS as expected appears to have had a good night.

ReplyDeleteGotham tends to retain around 84% of its top25 markets. So this should translate into a 2.4-2.5. I say that's pretty good for the show!
ReplyDeleteSeason to date, out of the 88 shows I currently have numbers for the skew, there are only 15 shows with a more male skewing than Sleepy Hollow. Although you could argue a lot of that is a result of being Gotham's lead-out, I am pretty sure the show skews more male than average even accounting for that.

Yeah Scorpion usually either stays the same, drops 0.1 or 0.2 from the top 25 markets. CSI LA was airing at 9.59 also. Mighty deflate Scorpion's numbers a little also. Great demo rating for Gotham! Benefitting from no football I think.

ReplyDeleteCBS Mondays always bounces back big time during January. The Voice is what basically killed it two years ago when NBC started it as a regular season stapler and there is no voice during the winter. In addition, the older skewing DWTS is fiercer competition for older skewing CBS than the higher rated but less compatible bachelor. And there is also the high viewing levels, from which CBS is the best positioned to benefit since they air mostly comedies and procedurals that casuals can jump into as opposed to serials.

ReplyDeleteBut starting time and the game itself will be more important, CBS is hoping for Brady vs Manning again (and not Baltimore vs Indianapolis) so it can get raings close to the 5s.
Sampling is tricky; this is a show that strikes me as broad so it could happen since those who see it after the game may get interest, but after seeing New Girl hitting 11.4 after the SB and then sink to a 1.6... I have grown reluctant of the lasting effects of sampling

ReplyDeleteCompletely agree; there is so fun along the way but they are missing a lot of opportunities with Katrina and Jenny, who have been very sidelined. The Abbie and Crane stuff is always reliable, but it will get old soon if they don't give it a twist or something
ReplyDeleteThat's because New Girl was a low rated female skewing comedy on its third season at the time and nobody cared for it. I think Scorpion can hit at least 4.0's after the Championship and stay in the mid-high 2's. That's also why I think The Blacklist will do better than expected, cause its a procedural in its sophomore season ready to explode, especially if it starts at the right time after the Super Bowl.

ReplyDeleteIts a procedural in its second season so its the best time, plus Netflix, one of the biggest DVR'd shows of all time, and James Spader is also gonna be in the highly anticipated movie Avengers 2.

ReplyDeleteSHIELD has a bigger link between the Marvel and it has benefited NOTHING from it. Why do you think Spader being in Avengers 2 is going to help?

It still may get the early renewal, but I wouldn't call it a sure thing.

ReplyDeleteThat's because the first 15 episodes of Shield were boring as hell to mostly everybody, and everybody that didn't like it didn't bother coming back. That's why it didn't benefit.

2 story lines that are incredibly easy to follow for those that haven't followed the show.
ReplyDeleteAll of the more complex story lines ended though.
And it's very unlikely the Super Bowl contributed anything to that factor since the episode after the SB's lead out did a 4.7. It pulled a number in that vicinity, at least, eight times before the Super Bowl itself and it quickly dropped to a 3.3 afterwards.
ReplyDeletePeople stopped watching SHIELD before the Captain America tie in. The only people that geeked out over the tie in were the few people still watching SHIELD.

ReplyDeleteSleepy Hollow hasn't been the fantastic show it was last season.
The drop in quality is just stunning.
I thought at first it is because of expansion in the episode order because the season 2 premiere was great even the critics are raving it (100% in rottentomatoes). But as the story goes on, like you said, secondary characters are underutilized. They missed the good addition of Corbin's son. Also, the Moloch thing was kinda rush. There are still two horsemen. They destroyed the momentum.

ReplyDeleteI think it´s tied season high for NCIS:LA, if I´m not mistaken it got 1.9 for ep.1; maybe I´m wrong, but I believe this climb is a combination of no new Castle and people being anxious for new TV after the holidays ending:)

ReplyDeleteAgain only the most dedicated fans stuck with the show. The average viewer could care less about the tie in. Also the first Captain America wasn't a well received movie so a tie in with a show that was also not well received obviously wasn't going to cause a viewership spike.
ReplyDeleteAvengers 2 is definitely gonna be promoting The Blacklist in theaters during the previews before the actual movie comes on, especially since Spader is the big bad in the movie. And they'll probably be telling people to catch up on Netflix and on demand since Avengers 2 comes out in May.

Me too! What did you think of Sunday's episode of Revenge btw? I just caught up and thought it was so good. This season has redeemed itself for me and I think it surpasses season 2 for sure, probably the majority of 3 too (the last few episodes were great). I actually am now going to write reviews for shows, and since I watch Revenge I started with that. If you want to read it I put it in my bio. :) You could discuss the show there without getting criticized haha.

ReplyDeleteBecause it was at the end of the season. If you'd already given up, there was no way to come back/catch up. Shield only just hit Netflix and started getting buzz again for being worth it (which started with the WS tie-in). But knowledge of a tie-in with a less than massive hit movie sequel wasn't going to change much--all the other tie-ins were like hey look a vaguely memorable movie star, not holy crap that just blew up the underlying premise of the entire show and changed everything, now we know why they've been treading water. This one was a total shock. But even after that massive change, the tie-in wasn't going to interest people who had no idea what was happening in a story--it's not a procedural that you can just jump into whenever.
