Ratings Breakdown:
The return of the TGIT-themed programming block resulted in a Thursday overnight victory for ABC, which bested No. 2 CBS by eight percent in the household overnights. Veteran “Grey’s Anatomy” opened with a second-place 6.4 rating/10 share from 8-9 p.m., followed by “Scandal” at a first-place 7.7/12 from 9-10 p.m. The two, on average, outdelivered year-ago occupant “The Taste” (2.8/ 4 on 1/30/14) by a hefty 152 percent. And they led into freshman “How To Get Away With Murder,” featuring recent SAG Award winner Viola Davis, at a dominant 6.4/11 at 10 p.m. Consider ABC’s revamped Thursday a major success this season.

In series-finale news, NBC drama “Parenthood” concluded its five and-one half season (and 103 episode) run with a season-high 3.8/ 7 in the household overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, this bested year-ago special “Saturday Night Live Presents an SNL Sports Spectacular” (3.3/ 6 on 1/30/14) by 15 percent. And it led out of an identical 3.8/ 6 for the 9:30 p.m. portion of the two-hour season-finale of lead-in “The Biggest Loser.” Overall, “The Biggest Loser” concluded its fall edition with a 3.5/ 6 from 8-10 p.m.

Top-rated for the evening, of course, was “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS at a 10.5/17 at 8 p.m. Next was sophomore “Mom” at a 7.0/11 (#1) at 8:30 p.m., which held a respectable 67 percent of the “Big bang” audience. “Two and a Half Man” scored a 6.1/ 9 (#2) at 9 p.m., followed by on-the-fence freshman comedy “The McCarthys” at a 4.2/ 7 at 9:30 p.m. (#2). As a reminder, “Two and a Half Men” will conclude with a one-hour episode on Thursday, Feb. 19 from 9-10 p.m. ET. Leading into the finale at 8:30 p.m. will be the series debut of “The Odd Couple” reboot, featuring Matthew Perry as sloppy Oscar Madison and Thomas Lennon as neat freak Felix. One week later on Feb. 26, current Thursday 8:30 p.m. time period occupant “Mom” moves to 9:30 p.m. ET out of encore telecasts of “The Big Bang Theory” at 9 p.m.

In week two news, Fox detective dramedy “Backstrom,” starring Rainn Wilson, took a tumble at a fourth-place 3.4/ 6 from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 35 percent below the 5.2/ 8 for its debut one week earlier (which translated into 7.98 million viewers and a 1.9 rating/6 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live + Same Day data). Failed year-ago occupant “Rake” was comparable at a 3.6/ 6 on the year-ago evening. And the overnight retention for “Backstrom” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “American Idol” (6.9/11) was modest at 49 percent.

Overall, “American Idol” finished second in the 8 p.m. hour with a 6.6/11.

The CW closed the evening with deteriorating “The Vampire Diaries” (#5: 1.4/ 2), which dropped by 18 percent year-to-year, and sophomore “Reign” (#5: 0.9/ 1), which did not earn its third season renewal.

  1. Backstrom fell hard as expected.

    ReplyDelete
  2. 7.9 Scandal
    7.4 HWGAWM

    ReplyDelete
  3. I was going to ask the same thing, too lazy to check myself, lol

    ReplyDelete
  4. Who has HH numbers for the fall finales of TGIT?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Scandal looks high, but Murder seems sharply down; it will still be a winner, but those HH for Murder are a bit concerning. It can still rise over the following weeks, but I thought it would do much better

    ReplyDelete
  6. I think Marc made a mistake with HTGAWM's HH number. that number looks low.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yup,I also think it may be a typo

    ReplyDelete
  8. It was probably 7.4

    ReplyDelete
  9. I asked him on Twitter, let's see what he says.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I know, but usually lower HH means lower demo. We have to wait and see, but it doesn't look that good for Murder

    ReplyDelete
  11. I hope we get top 25 today

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm getting on the top25 train! I'm really curious to see how TGIT did

    ReplyDelete
  13. That would make MUCH more sense. 7.4 is something Murder would do upon return

    ReplyDelete
  14. As many said i think it was a typo

    ReplyDelete
  15. Murder seems low, I wonder if that's a mistake has it usually has high retention from scandal

    ReplyDelete
  16. So it looks like Grey's did the same as the winter finale. That's great, it was a brilliant episode with stellar acting!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think so too, because it is at the same level as Grey's Anatomy when in November, it was closer to Scandal

    ReplyDelete
  18. He never replies to my tweets. Let's see if he does to yours.

    ReplyDelete
  19. it really was excellent in every way

    ReplyDelete
  20. Those ratings mean nothing!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I hope that's a mistake for HTGAWM seems pretty low and backstrom drops as was expected.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah, I think so too.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOL Where's Elementary's HH rating?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Haha! Can't believe he forgot about that :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. It depends on what failsJanuary 30, 2015 at 2:39 PM

    Scandal - great
Murder - underwhelming (ok retention and older skewing, which means a bigger difference in the demos)
    Grey's - flat

At least it seems like that to me, I don't remember their typical HHs, it's been two months.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Scandal: 7.9
    HTGAWM: 7.4
    Grey's: 6.4

    Their fall finales numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Good for TGIT but also awesome for Parenthood for once.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It depends on what failsJanuary 30, 2015 at 2:41 PM

7.7 is great for Scandal, but I didn't know it was down from the fall finale.

Skewing might fool us, but most shows skew older in the winter/spring.

    ReplyDelete
  29. NBC should have ended Parenthood last week. Might have been able to get slightly higher ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Bad for CW, great night for ABC!
    Sad both couldn't do well.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It depends on what failsJanuary 30, 2015 at 2:47 PM

Murder HH is not a typo according to Marc himself

    ReplyDelete
  32. I asked Marc if the HH for HTGAWM were a typo (since it was also missing Elementary's HH) but he didn't reply to me.
    Obviously.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Maybe Parenthood took a bit away from Murder?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Enough to take a full tenth out of it? I don't see it but it could happen.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It depends on what failsJanuary 30, 2015 at 2:50 PM

  36. Shonda is a powerhouse! Glad to see that scandal seems up

    ReplyDelete
  37. FOX has had the benefit of shows being on break. Once they start getting back on schedule, I think that they are going to be in for some real surprises. They're lineup isn't nearly as strong as it's indicated the last few weeks. Both American Idol and Backstrom look to be down significantly.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sitcomsonline report that Scandal returned with a 4.0 in the top25 markets.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So roughly a 3.5 (estimate)

    ReplyDelete
  40. It depends on what failsJanuary 30, 2015 at 2:59 PM

This was true for Backstrom and for the first week of january.

Empire already faced full competition, Gotham leveled down, so it already lost all gain it got from its 2.5 winter premiere. Tuesday comedies are mostly on repeats, but everyone knows they are weak

    ReplyDelete
  41. Averaging it out, Elementary has to be at a 4.5 HH's for the hour. That's the only way to get a 6.3/10 for the night with five data points.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Doesn't Grey's usually hold the majority of its top25 markets?

    ReplyDelete
  43. It does not. Around 87%.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I admit I only have the premiere to go with and in the premiere Grey's did a 3.2 and the final number ended up being a 3.1 hence why I said that Grey's held much of the top25 markets. Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Scandal, HTGAWM, TBBT and GA are now in the table (top 25)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I will loose it. I was right on Scandal but wrong on the other two unless there are some major deviations from top25.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Top25 Markets are great for all ABC shows

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks for posting them. Although, if that's correct, then the nightly average for CBS is too low for the night than stated.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It's probably because it was a premiere and premieres are somewhat of an outliner themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  50. It looks like Empire will overthrow TBBT as highest rated scripted show

    ReplyDelete
  51. Probably. But this is also a premiere for all effects. So the numbers could be way off. I hope they are higher than my estimates honestly. Not only because I want to get spot's question but also because I want the three shows to do higher lol

    ReplyDelete
  52. In my opinion, FOX's pending renewals are going to come down to cost and how much FOX loves their pilots. Backstrom doing well or doing poorly doesn't have any bearing on that.

They've renewed enough already that they could fill up their schedule with new pilots and still be cohesive.

    ReplyDelete
  53. By the way, have you seen TGIT's return?

    ReplyDelete
  54. God, I hope not. My poor Reign :'(

    ReplyDelete
  55. maybe the 0.4 sticks, perhaps its already to to low to any further down (sorry thats not enouraging)

    ReplyDelete
  56. It did a 0.3 already but that was, like, a 0.34 so it was really close to being a 0.4.

    I hope it didn't do a .3, though.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I wonder if it will drop/gain any or keep the 1.4?

    ReplyDelete
  58. other than sitcome online on sundays? i know the futon critic did report them in their daily final broadcast numbers but they seem to have stopped
