CBS was the clear winner in the household overnights on this final Tuesday in January despite populating the evening with encores of “NCIS” (#1 for the night: 7.8 rating/12 share) and spin-off “NCIS: New Orleans” (7.4/11) from 8-10 p.m. ET. A 10 p.m. telecast of “CSI,” which CBS seems to be rushing off the air this season, scored a dominant 6.6/11 opposite repeats of “Chicago Fire” on NBC (2.3/ 4) and freshman “Forever” on ABC (2.0/ 3), which did not necessarily earn its full season renewal. Comparably, this was a stronger overnight performance for “CSI” than its regularly scheduled Sunday 10 p.m. time period this season.
Distant second-place ABC opened the night with an encore telecast of “Shark Tank,” which was on the map with a second-place 4.0/ 6 from 8-9 p.m. And that led into recent entry “Marvel’s Agent Carter” at an uneventful 3.1/ 5 at 9 p.m. (#2).
Over at NBC, two more episodes of soon-to-conclude “Parks and Recreations” lost steam from one week earlier with a 2.3/ 4 at 8 p.m. (#5: – 8 percent) and a 1.9/ 3 at 8:30 p.m. (#5: -10 percent). Each day (except Sunday) during the main TV Season we post the TV Ratings for the previous nights primetime shows for the major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC). Cable Network ratings will be added to the Ratings Database.
The first item that gets posted (normally around 2pm GMT) is the early overnight analysis based on the early household numbers (these are not the same as the Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers that are posted later).
Next, if available, we will post the Top 25 Market 18-49 Ratings to give you a rough idea of the ratings to following.
Later on (normally between 4pm-5pm GMT) we post the official early overnight Total Viewers and 18-49 Demo numbers in the table above (We also where possible now post the 18-34 and 25-54 Demo Numbers).
Finally, later in the evening (10pm-11pm GMT) or the following day, the final adjusted ratings numbers are released, these are then posted in the Ratings Database. The Final Adjusted numbers are what we use for all our Renew/Cancellation Tables, Full Season Tables, Ratings Scorecards etc (see below). Friday's Final Adjusted Ratings are normally available on the following Monday.

ReplyDeleteOne Big Happy was surprisingly good, I quite enjoyed the screeners NBC sent. Looking forward to more episodes. It only has a 6 episode order and production has already concluded, so even if it is successful, I don't think NBC will be able to order more episodes for this season. They'll probably replace it with Mr. Robinson (which sounds exactly like The Steve Harvey Show) and doesn't sound good at all.

ReplyDeleteWhy, ratings are very important for next season when CW decide which shows get the best airtime slots and how much money they make from advertising. If a show, even if it's already renewed gets lower and lower ratings, next season it will probably be placed in a very poor timeslot.

ReplyDeleteThe biggest loser in all this could be Person Of Interest. If I'm CBS, I'm realizing that CSI did better in viewers and equal to the demos of a typical Person Of Interest original with a repeat lead in. It is impressive for CSI.

ReplyDeleteSPN hasn't stuck to one plot in about 6-7 years. I actually think they have been fairly consistent about the main plot this season (Dean's mark), it's just the rest is uneven.

-Does very well in syndication
-Does well on Friday
This is now a very interestinf subject matter and with Elementary getting a S4 for syndication and The Good Wife doing well in a couple unreachable demos, I seriously believe now that Hawaii 5-0 and Person of Interest are fighting for a spot on the fall schedule, and one could very much be cancelled.
So to answer your question, it's a true bubble show and as such I would have to put it at the 45-55% chance range.
There is absolutely no way to judge that, seeing it had zero competition.

ReplyDeleteI actually think it's all been uneven and it's incredibly frustratung. The mark was arguably last years plot, which only returned because the writers realised that they had written themselves into a corner with Demon Dean (that about 98% of the audience and cast wish we saw more of) and up until the return from the midseason finale we had only had about 3 scenes where the mark had even been mentioned.
ReplyDeleteAs for the rest. What is Crowley's story now? Mommy issues? Really? Cas' story went from dealing with his lack of grace to babysitting a teenager whilst his grace plot reamains barely even mentioned. Sam is existing. For some bizarre reason we had the whole Cole thing for the first few episodes, what was the point of that? Don't get me started on what the hell happened to the ghosts/veil as heaven still isn't properly open and right about now there should be a plague of angry spirits wreaking havoc. The writers need to remember their plots and try and stick to them, or at least let them evolve. Sorry, that was a vent haha. But I guess you're right that at least the ratings are around the same. It's just that in the past 4/5 episodes it's been decreasing I think (last week was reported 1 here in the finals yet everywhere else reported it as 0.9).
SPN needs to retire before it drops to TVD levels.

ReplyDeleteCas' story is about facing his past and choices. Cole was about Dean facing his past. Claire was an example of what Dean is/was/could be (based on his past and present and his father issues). Crowley's story is also about his past. There's no real reason for Crowley to still be there (and at this point I may say the same about Cas), so I'm not surprised if it seems more like filler. I think the Claire story was a good idea, I just think the writing was mediocre/weak.
ReplyDeleteTo me the mark was always going to last more than just one season, so it doesn't feel like a retread. It's showing Dean's descent and identity issues before he can be built back up. I think the writing for this has been pretty solid (and I think it was mentioned or implied in every episode after he was cured), even as the rest of the season has been a malaise, but I can see where one might find it dull.
I agree about Demon Dean, I wish they'd stretched it out a little longer, but I also think fans are romanticizing that part of the character and would have gotten sick of it. I do think it should have lasted at least one or two more episodes.
The main problem with SPN is a lot of the scriptwriters are average and the show is suffocating in the format of only having the brothers and killing off everyone else.
The ratings have been around .09 most of the season. I'd guess they will slip further, and I'm not going to say that isn't down to quality, because I'm sure part of it is, but I also think it's fairly natural for the timeslot competition, the time of year and for the show's lifespan.
But it did a lot worse than a new Chicago Fire actually does, so I just wonder if some of that audience drifted over to CSI. Maybe not. But CF usually does a lot better (1.5? 1.6?) when it's an original, as opposed to this 0.8. No way to know until it's original vs. original though, I guess.

ReplyDeleteThe good news is in the spring Supernatural is moving to Wednesday. The bad news is iZombie is taking its place. I am still trying to decide if that's going to be bad for iZombie or AOS but I'm leaning towards iZombie. I believe the CW underestimated the amount of Flash viewers that switch over to ABC for AOS.

Say what you will about seasons 1–8, but the lack of Sera Gamble and Ben Edlund on the writing team (and even Carver as a writer rather than the showrunner) has definitely hurt the show. To their credit, the writers seemed to have realized this and are trying to compensate by giving Cas, Crowley and other supporting characters their own plotlines now. This season alone, they've spent a good deal of screen time on characters like Hannah, Claire and Rowena, and even Jody and Donna. Unfortunately, it's not working. Supporting characters work best when their stories intertwine with the brothers' story. Killing off all the supporting characters was one bad end of the spectrum, but taking the focus of the show away from the Winchesters in favor of supporting characters is the other bad end of the spectrum.
To be fair, it's gotta be hard to write for a 10-year-old show with two main characters. Look at the other aging shows out there – they all have ensemble casts and at least 3–4 characters who are in every single episode. SPN's original premise was far from optimal for a long-running show; that the writers have struggled with how to make it work year after year is not surprising. That the show has lasted this long anyway is impressive.

ReplyDeleteA lot of shows fluctuate a tenth or two some weeks. It's no cause for concern. When you start to see it continuously go down and down, then you should worry.
ReplyDeleteI watch every week, regardless of who is prominent in the promo's. I have since S1. I do watch it while I'm on the PC now, so I can tune out what I don't like. (Claire/Cas/Hannah/Metatron Soap Opera Fail)
ReplyDeleteSad for Agent Carter. Such a great little show, and given how much ABC skews female and tends to succeed with shows that have female leads, I'd have thought it would do better. I guess a lot of people feel they got burnt by Marvel's previous show, which even has "Agent(s)" in its title too. The irony of course is that said show is AMAZING now, but not too many viewers are left to see it.

Exactly! You hit it on the head. On this show, supporting characters need to do just that: support the leads, not carry their own stories no one cares about.

ReplyDeleteWell thankfully, we have AKA Jessica Jones coming on Netflix and the Captain Marvel movie in 2018. But yeah, AC succeeding would've encpuraged Marvel and others to put more action heroines on both the big and small screen, so too bad.
ReplyDeleteI think there was a decent amount of promotion for AC, if not as much as AoS got before it first premiered, obviously. What puzzles me is that only was the initial sampling of AC small, but even that initial audience has decreased a lot. The first 2 episodes got 2.0 and 1.8, the third got 1.5, now the fourth has gotten a 1.3. So even among the viewers who DID give it a chance, quite a few didn't like it. It's odd because while it's widely agreed that AoS lost viewers because of its crappy start, AC started much better, with a focus and definitive tone that early AoS lacked.
DD could have been a great story, but they greatly limited what DD did and cut the story short.
ReplyDeleteThe MOC is the only story w/potential, but they refuse to take any chances w/Dean so the story is somewhat boring . . . at least to me. The Dean Metatron described in the last episode is the Dean I wish we were seeing consistently on screen. Oh well.
Unlike AoS where I criticized every character except May in the initial days I loved each and every character on AC. The show found its groove from the get go. Love Jarvis and Peggy. Love the SSA office and politics there. Also the boarding house. Its really a shame people are not giving this a chance. I get a feeling ABC is not the place to show comic book shows. They skew mostly into soapy goodness. Marvel needs to start its own tv channel.

ReplyDeleteIt's gonna be a while until we get the Netflix shows. Daredevil will be released on April 10, and the other 3 don't have a date yet.
ReplyDeleteBut since it is on Netflix we will have all the episodes together right? We don't have to go through the agony of waiting week after week.
ReplyDeleteDaredevil is in April. Jessica Jones wont be till late 2015 (filming begins next month so it probably wont be released till August/September or so).
ReplyDeleteMarvel will probably take over Disney XD eventually. They have 3 shows on there currently with a 4th soon to begin. Supposedly they have another 2 in development as well. At this rate half the new shows they air will be Marvel.

ReplyDeleteTo be fair, it's gotta be hard to write for a 10-year-old show with two main characters. Look at the other aging shows out there – they all have ensemble casts and at least 3–4 characters who are in every single episode.
ReplyDeleteBut couldn’t they start writing for Sam again? That would be something new. He has pretty much fallen by the wayside. Or is no one truly interested in that character anymore?
