Ratings Breakdown:
Fox inched past CBS for Thursday overnight dominance, with a two-tenth of a household rating point advantage. In series-premiere news, Fox drama “Backstrom,” featuring former “The Office” star Rainn Wilson as an offensive, irascible detective who is engaged in a constant struggle with his self-destructive tendencies (is there any other kind of TV detective?), opened with a second-place 5.1/ 8 in the household overnights from 9-10 p.m. Comparably, this was 13 percent above the year-ago debut of short-lived legal drama “Rake,” with Greg Kinnear. The overnight retention for “Backstrom” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “American Idol” (7.5/12) was so-so at 68 percent. And it dropped by 13 percent in the second half-hour (5.9/ 9 to 4.8/ 8).
Assuming “Backstrom” and “Rake” have similar audience skews (translation: older), chances are the debut of “Backstrom” will be a minor improvement over the 6.95 million viewers and the 1.7 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 (based on the Live Plus Same Day data) for the launch of “Rake.” In other words, this is nothing spectacular.
Overall, “American Idol” averaged a dominant 7.3/12 from 8-9 p.m., which was a minor nine percent below the 8.0/12 for “Idol” on the year-ago evening. That said, there is still life left in the veteran singing competition.
CBS opened the evening with an encore telecast of “The Big Bang Theory” at a 7.0/12 at 8 p.m. (#2) into a 6.6/11 (#2) for “Mom” at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, “Mom” held 94 percent of the encore “Big Bang” lead-in, which was its best overnight retention to-date. And this is the episode that should result in a second Emmy Award for Allison Janney as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Next on the Eye net was soon-to-conclude “Two and a Half Men” at a 5.8/ 9 (#1) at 9 p.m., followed by a second repeat installment of “The Big Bang Theory” at a 5.5/ 9 at 9:30 p.m. (#1) and older-skewing “Elementary” at a typical 5.6/10 from 10-11 p.m.
In series-finale news, NBC 9-10 p.m. sitcoms “Bad Judge” (#4: 2.1/ 3) and “A To Z” (#4: 1.7/ 3) earned their walking papers, which led into the second-to-last episode of drama “Parenthood” at a 3.2/ 6 (#2) at 10 p.m. Earlier in the evening on NBC was “The Biggest Loser” at a 2.9/ 5 from 8-9 p.m. (#4), which was 29 percent, on average, above year-ago sitcoms “Community” (2.2/ 3) and “Parks and Recreation” (2.3/ 3).
Elsewhere, the season (or series) finale of ABC cooking competition “The Taste” went out with a whimper at a 2.5 4 from 8-10 p.m. And it led into a repeat of “How To Get Away With Murder” at a 1.8/ 3 at 10 p.m. (#3). Note to Viola Davis: you were robbed at the Golden Globe Awards.
Capping off the night was The CW’s combination of “The Vampire Diaries” at a 1.5/ 2 (#5) at 8 p.m., which dropped by 21 percent from one year earlier, and sophomore “Reign” (#5: 1.0/ 2), which slipped from “The Vampire Diaries” by 33 percent.

I have to agree with him about Viola and Allision
ReplyDeleteOkay for backstrom
Is anyone surprised that Backstrom didn't do that well? Probably looking at around a 2.0 in the demos there, which isn't great after American Idol.
ReplyDeleteParenthood finally hits a 6 share. Would be nice to see that show hit a 2.0 for its finale.
I don't think a 2 is impossible
ReplyDeleteSo my Cw shows stayed steady more or less. Looking forward for the demo numbers.
ReplyDeleteAfter this season I'll miss Two aah men so much!
So a 1.8 or 1.9 for Backstrom?
ReplyDeleteThis is not a bad start for Backstrom but also not a good start considering the competition it will face next week.
ReplyDeleteRuth Wilson was crazy good in The Affair though so I can't say she was robbed. Viola gives a more powerful performance because she has a more expressive character as opposed to Ruth which was one of the most depressing characters I remember. I probably would have preferred Viola but I can't say it was unfair. In fact, I think any of these ladies could have gotten and I wouldn't have thought of it as unfair: Claire Danes, Emily VanCamp, Julianna Margulies, Lizzy Caplan, Ruth Wilson, Tatiana Maslany and Viola Davis
ReplyDeleteThat's about where I would place it unless it somehow skews younger than the typical comedic procedural.
ReplyDeleteI expected Backstorm to start slightly ahead of Rake if only because it is not easy to be as big of a flop as Rake was, so this is in line with it. We shall see how the demos look. But the competition will kill it very soon. A new drama against Scandal and Blacklist is just too much.
ReplyDeleteMurder will be back next week. I doubt it can hit a 2.0 against it.
ReplyDeleteTrue I wanted Davis but Wilson was pretty good
ReplyDeleteProbably 0.8 for TVD and 0.4 for reign
ReplyDeleteI wonder just how far it will fall next week (if it does)?
ReplyDeleteI think a month for now, if it is still on the air, it will be lucky to crack a 1.0.:
ReplyDelete- next week: Scandal returns
- the week after: The Blacklist returns
- two weeks after: Two and a Half Men one hour series finale
Meanwhile: usual post premiere depreciation + weakening Idol.
I think it will probably follow in Rake's shoes.. ratings fall, then gets moved to Friday or off the schedule. Just can't see it lasting long.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine Bones coming back earlier than expected (was that hiatus necessary?) and actually getting Idol on Thursdays to lead-in to it considering Backstrom had terrible WOM and it has FIERCE COMPETITION.
ReplyDeleteAccording to TVMediaInsights, Backstrom fell 13% at the half. Since some unique viewers tend to catch a new show while in progress to sample it, any loss for a premiere over 10% at the half is concerning. It sets up what could be huge second week loses for a new series.
ReplyDeleteCan believe to many people showed to see Backstrom.
ReplyDeleteNote to Viola Davis...
ReplyDeleteLike she is going to be reading this, lol
Lmao
ReplyDeletePlease A Series High For Mom...This Show Is So Awesome!
ReplyDeleteI think it was because of Rain Wilson. Many of the viewers won't be returning next week.
ReplyDeleteBackstrom = Rake 2.0
ReplyDeleteExpect another character driven show next year on FOX as well, because FOX never learns.
Character driven procedurals can make a lot of syndication money if it hits with an audience. FOX is well aware of that and is trying to compete in that market.
ReplyDeleteAll of these sci fi shows and high concept serials are great and FOX will always have a few on schedule, but they don't pay the bills in terms of a syndication market.
Overall, I think the overall idea of scheduling more character procedurals is solid, but the shows that they picked were just the wrong concepts within that character procedural genre.
House - Rake - Backstrom - Luther
ReplyDeleteIt makes sense
Luther could actually work if they find the right creative process/team behind it. The issue that I have is that I don't have any confidence in FOX finding those right people.
ReplyDeleteWow, I'm surprised Backstrom got average ratings last night. Ratings will drop dramatically with the second episode and it will be cancelled.
ReplyDeleteEva Green, also. She's tremendous in Penny Dreadful.
ReplyDeleteBut agreed with your overall point about the depth of the category.
I would love for it to hit a 2 but it will be very very tough with HTGAWM back next week. :(
ReplyDeleteI don't watch Penny Dreadful so I can't comment on her actually, but I accept your opinion!
ReplyDeleteBe that may, but FOX has tried the "the main character is an ass and unlikable" two years in a row now. I have never watched Luther, but I assume it will be little different, but US remakes haven't been working out lately as well.
ReplyDeleteI think Backstrom got a 1.9/2.0
ReplyDeleteTVD 0.8
ReplyDeleteReign 0.5 I think.
Amazing for Mom.
ReplyDeleteWas it a special episode of Elementary so CBS decided to give it a better lead-in and pre-empted The McCarthys at the last minute?
0.7 for TVD is ok-ish. Thought it would do better though. I expected 0.4 for Reign
ReplyDeleteAwesome for Mom.. increase versus last week
ReplyDeleteWinners: Mom, American Idol
ReplyDeleteHonorable Mention: Parenthood, Two and a Half Men, Backstorm
Losers: The Vampire Diaries, Reign, Bad Judge, A to Z, The Taste
The CW had a horrible night. Both shows should have done much better sans TGIT. They had no major competition to justify the lows and both ended up the fall on a relatively high note so this is really bad. Mom did amazing, I am glad for the show. As for Backstorm, it did about what I expected (I said 1.8/1.9) but this still isn't enough to make it sustainable for when the competition arrives I think
Definitely seems like American Idol and Empire is a good combo, so much so that American Idol on Wednesdays are significantly more watched than that on Thursdays. Empire is really doing great for FOX.
ReplyDeletepretty low for the vampire diaries isn't it
ReplyDeleteMom truly is a breakout hit this year.
ReplyDeleteNot having The McCarthys on the schedules seems to have helped Elementary.
ReplyDeleteCBS is doing right by the show. It treated Mom very well during summer with a lot of repeats to increase exposure and it has gotten it a nice scheduling to prop it up. The only mistake I feel they've made was the horrible idea of airing it on Thanksgiving night, but well. However, I think the show is even stronger than last year, it's hitting all the right notes creatively so that counts as well.
ReplyDeleteIdol always did better on Wed than Thurs.
ReplyDeleteReign as always 3 points bellow TVD. Whatever it has been renewed already. So im happy
ReplyDeleteI adore Viola Davis to death and I would have preferred to have her win but have you actually watched the Affair? Ruth Wilson was mind blowing good in a much more subtle and contained yet incredible performance. I can't actually say her win was unfair in any way. It comes down to preferences, purely.
ReplyDeleteI feel like HTGAWM has been on repeats for so long they probably have repeated every single one of the episodes
ReplyDeleteDamn it TVD,you should have done 0.8 at least without any major competition.
ReplyDeleteA once upon a time show that rules the CW now reduced to trash, not even sure how it got a season 7.Reign is a superb show ,I wish more people watched it.
ReplyDeleteI'm really fascinated Reign got renewed with this numbers, very lucky i guess!
ReplyDeleteIt got season 7 coz the ratings are still higher than network avg and still profitable for the network.
ReplyDeleteSo, Elementary gets about a point higher lead-in and barely moves up. Last year, Crazy Ones and 2.5 Men were blamed for Elementary's slide. This year, The McCarthys. Maybe, just maybe, people have given up on the show.
ReplyDeleteOK for Backstrom. Amazing for Mom
ReplyDeleteWhich is ironic, considering that Elementary barely improved.
ReplyDeleteThe storylines still suck .What happened to the premise of the show ?Thats why the true viewers have jumped the shark. No storylines, retcons, fair to poor acting .
ReplyDeleteI agree on the quality part.
ReplyDeleteThere is a mistake in the ratings of the second TBBT rerun.
ReplyDeleteThe second TBBT rerun actually did a 1.9. Doing a 1.5 out of that at 10pm is actually acceptable.
ReplyDeleteAdded to that It is said that Season 7 will not have the same cast.So...Im thinking maybe only 13 episodes.
ReplyDeleteIt's strange that they did that for the show last night when there was no competition instead of last week when Murder premieres and Parenthood has its series finale.
ReplyDeleteI just find it ironic that Julie Plec's twitter bio says "taking Mon/Thurs nights to a whole new level" I don't think lower ratings is what she meant.
ReplyDeleteThanks, will fix.
ReplyDeleteNBC's primetime lineup was delayed in Portland and Oregon due to college basketball coverage
ReplyDeleteThe CW often does WTF renewals. I loved Nikita, but the forth season renewal was totally not justified by the numbers but at least had syndication as a reason. Then there is BATB which keeps getting renewed in spite of horrendous ratings but with a really involved fan base.
ReplyDeleteElementary was the first of a two-parter. But it seems strange that they'd pre-empt The McCarthys at the last minute rather than not scheduling a new ep there in the first place.
ReplyDeleteNo problem!
ReplyDeleteSomehow i doubt that.I'm seeing final 22 episodes.Let's see.
ReplyDelete'm slightly surprised that Backstrom got a 2.0, but I wonder if it will adjust down, given its half hours?
ReplyDeleteMore TVD, please :D
ReplyDeleteRake started off decent too but look what happened.
ReplyDeleteBackstrom actually did better than i thought it would.... but i'd still rather have The Finder.
ReplyDeleteI saw the pilot, and I could barely get through it (the show shouldn't take it personally, I haven't found any drama I like on HBO). But your comment is in line with my point. If it was a close call, I think the network was a factor. It really is such an award show thing to do. Between the popular (3.0+) show on a broadcast network or a premium cable network show that has a hard time hitting a .3, they chose the more obscure. Same goes for Oscars. American Sniper made 100 Million over MLK weekend and suddenly has made almost as much as the rest of the nominees combined.
ReplyDeletegood TVD & Elementary thou I don't know if a syndication will get us a s4 hurry up & tell me because I want to start it
ReplyDeleteReally quite surprised Backstrom did that well. If it continues to hold up (which I really doubt) I'll watch it.
ReplyDeleteYep all of them except A to Z and Parenthood were preempted.
ReplyDeleteBut The Affair airs on Showtime.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I meant. Premium channels in general
ReplyDeleteIt's because it's a CBS show. They're required to have at least 2 of those in the lineup every season.
ReplyDeleteNext season will be it's last.
ReplyDeleteMakes sense. That's the reason BatB got renewed last year?
ReplyDeleteThat's not true.Half or more of CWs shows are joint CzbS/WB productions so it dosent matter who owns/produces aa show, both sides split production costs & profits a show makes
ReplyDeleteNo.BatB made money online, has deccent DVD sales & great international sales( selling to over 30 countries & one report I saw said it sold to over 200 countries). It was making money ipdespite it's awful ratings.
ReplyDeleteNo.BatB sold for three seasons internationally reportedly and sold very well internationally & makes money in digitally/online viewing plus deccent DVD sales
ReplyDeleteIn season one BatB was the fourth to fifth highest rated, not " horrendous" enough to be an automatic renewal
ReplyDeleteBatB sold for three seasons overseas reportedly and sold to over 30 countries & I saw a article saying it sold to 200 counties,It has deccent sales and makes digitally/online.The show made money despite its awful ratings
ReplyDeleteOk.I had no idea! Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteI'll give you season one being a tossup for renewal as to ratings. It wasn't an awful choice, but last season the demographic was .29 average. There is no way to call that anything other than horrendous. HOD had similarly bad ratings with an average of .35, but it was in season three and had the syndication gods on its side. For your sake I hope BATB goes up when it comes back this summer, but that doesn't change the fact that ratings tanked last year.
ReplyDelete
