Metered Market Wednesday Ratings
Another Stellar Performance for “Empire” on Fox

Wednesday 1/21/15

Household
Rating/Share
Fox 7.9/12
CBS 6.1/10
NBC 3.9/ 6
ABC 2.7/ 4
CW 1.7/ 3

-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 1/22/14:
CBS: +17, CW: +13, NBC: – 2, Fox: – 8, ABC: -40

———-

Note: The following labels are based on the household overnights and are subject to change given the availability of other pending data streams. The overnights are your first look at what to potentially expect when the other results come in. And we always take into account other benchmarks including the expected demographic ratings, potential DVR usage, the critical acclaim (or lack of) and the social media presence.

-Winners:
“American Idol” (Fox), “Empire” (Fox)

-Honorable Mention:
“The Mentalist” (CBS), “Criminal Minds” (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
“The 100” (CW)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
Week three of Fox’s now bona fide new hit drama “Empire” topped the 9 p.m. hour with a 7.6 rating/12 share in the household overnights. Comparably, this was four percent above its week two telecast (7.3/11 on Jan. 14), and that translated into 10.32 million viewers and a 4.0 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 (based on the live plus same day data). The overnight retention for “Empire” out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in “American Idol” (8.6/13) was solid at 88 percent.

Overall, “American Idol” led the 8 p.m. hour with an 8.2/13 in the overnights, which was just five percent below the 8.6/13 for a two-hour telecast on the year-ago evening. Needless to say, this will not be “Idol’s” final season.

With regularly scheduled “Survivor” on a brief hiatus, the final season of CBS’ older-skewing drama “The Mentalist” kept the time period warm with a second-place 6.2/10 from 8-9 p.m. And it led into a second-place 6.7/10 for “Criminal Minds” at 9 p.m., which will feature former “CSI: NY” star Gary Sinise as the head of the FBI’s Analysis Unit in a planned new spin-off series. The potential new crime solver will air as an episode of “Criminal Minds” later this season, with the filming set to begin next month. Sinise headlined “CSI: NY” from 2004-13 and the first spin-off from “Criminal Minds,” “Suspect Behavior,” aired for 13 episodes in early 2011.

On-the-fence “Stalker,” the only new CBS drama not to be officially renewed for season two, capped off the night for the Eye net with a dominant 5.3/ 9 at 10 p.m. But NBC’s competing “Chicago Fire” (#2: 4.3/ 7) is poised for victory among adults 18-49. And “Stalker” was 15 percent below the 6.2/10 for former time period occupant “CSI” on the year-ago evening.

Earlier on NBC was an encore telecast of “The Mysteries of Laura” at a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 from 8-9 p.m., followed by veteran “Law & Order: SVU” at a third-place 4.4/ 7 at 9 p.m. Comparably, “SVU” increased from the “Mysteries of Laura” second-run by 52 percent in the overnights.

Elsewhere, ABC populated the night with repeats of sitcoms “The Middle” (#3: 3.9/ 6), “The Goldbergs” (#3: 3.3/ 5), “Modern Family” (#4: 3.7/ 6) and “Black-ish” (#4: 2.8/ 4) into a 10 p.m. encore telecast of goofy “Galavant” (#3: 1.3/ 2). And sophomore “The 100” on The CW (#5: 1.1/ 2) did not earn its third season renewal with overnight erosion out of lead-in “Arrow” (#5: 2.2/ 3) of 50 percent.

  1. It definitely would but this show is going against all the odds so who knows?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Whoa Empire, what a beast.
2.2 is good for Arrow. I hope it got 1.1, but 1.0 would be good too ;)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Normally i would say no but this show is on some strange different level, it does not follow the rules it appears

    ReplyDelete
  4. Apparently, it does, no.

FOX has a real beast of a show here.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Empire is quite impressive. It may end up helping steady AI as its lead-in. Wouldn't that be ironic?

Has there been a single week this season where Stalker even came close to CSI's ratings from last year? Even last night, incredibly week competition with ABC punting at 10 pm. CBS should've moved all those extra episodes (3 from football pre-emptions) back to Wednesday night to pave the way for CSI: Cyber. That would've made sense considering that Stalker is done for.

    ReplyDelete
  6. a 1.1 would be awesome for arrow, but I think a 1.0 is what I am expecting. I dont expect the viewers total to be over 3 million though, seeing as the flash went below 4 million viewers this week.

    ReplyDelete
  7. LOL, but it looks like CPD grew from SVU again this week.

This is a great trend for the show and I'm hoping NBC is taking note.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Revenge and OUAT22 January 2015 at 14:17

    I am guessing arrow (1.1) and the 100 (0.5-0.6)
I am so excited to watch both of them tonight

    ReplyDelete
  9. It does look like it grew again, which is great for NBC.

Chicago PD keeps getting better creatively, so as more viewers find it, who knows how much it can grow.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Marc, if JtV earned its renewal stripe with lower numbers than The 100, then The 100 definetely did earn its renewal strip. I hate this guy!

On another note: it seems Arrow will break 1s and The 100 could hit 0.6, which I'm happy with.

    ReplyDelete
  11. They got a 2.1 HH rating for midseason finale and it translated to a 1.1 and 3 mil viewers in the finals.

    ReplyDelete
  12. And Empire left me speechless again, what a monster

Definitelly the biggest surprise of the season, both ratings wise and quality wise

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yep, especially since Arrow doesn't lift The 100 that much, the show can muster 0.5/0.6 on its own, which says more about it than most shows, but Marc just likes to throw trash to most genre related stuff, The 100 included. He has always been reluctant of labeling shows like Arrow, SPN and others as winners, even when they clearly are (SPN at a 1.7 in HH is a winner for The CW, wherever Marc likes it or not)

    ReplyDelete
  14. I wonder how much can it increase? Could it hit 5s? And then, could it reach 6s?
As of right now, if it increases another 2 tenths or more I'm going to say it's going to reach 5s eventually. And if the growth continues next season, then we are seeing the broadcast version of The Walking Dead

    ReplyDelete
  15. What did the 100 get for its midseason finale?

    ReplyDelete
  16. 0.5 and 1.4 million viewers, with no Arrow lead in to help ;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I keep hearing good things about it and i like most of the promos i see. I am a bit affraid of adding another procedural but i have decided to give it a try in the summer

    ReplyDelete
  18. There's a great possibility that Empire will increase next week. The episode 3 is much better than episode 2!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I haven't been eager to watch it because I'm not a hip hop fan, so I ask: is there something for me in the show even when I'm not a fan of the music genre it most heavily portrays?

    ReplyDelete
  20. The 100 got 1.0 in HH ratings and 0.5 demo.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would calm down. I mean even with the crazy trend i doubt the broadcasters are able to produce another twd. Or cable for the matter. In the last 15 years or so i have never sern anything like twd, so i would be surprised if suddenly we would get two

    ReplyDelete
  22. I was asking about the hh but thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'd ask this question for myself as well.

    ReplyDelete
  24. What does it mean to The 100 ? Hope 0.6

    ReplyDelete
  25. I mean, Taraji is enough of a reason for me to watch but I want to know what I'm in for and if there's something else in the show to lure me in.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It's just that, aside from TWD, I haven't seen a show that already premieres high and then keeps growing on week 3. Growth on week 2? Sure, I have seen that, but this is pretty unprecedented for me, so I'm nearly shocked that Empire keeps growing.

Also, I'm talking about "if"s, if the show stays on the 4s is going to be a huge hit, but not TWD level, obviously, but if next week grows again I wonder when it will stop.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The best comparison that I can give is Chicago PD is trying to morph into NBC's new version of Southland. It's case focused, but it's darker tinted and while most times while they find the culprit, there's a sense that there's more out there that isn't solved. It's not so cut and dry as most procedurals.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Probably a 0.6. It could be a 0.5, but it looks like a 0.6.
Should we be lucky, it'll be a 0.7, but that's unlikely

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good for Arrow. The 100 is so good,i wish more people watched it live!

    ReplyDelete
  30. EMPIRE is a monster hit!

    ReplyDelete
  31. How is that 5.3 for Stalker? Good, decent or bad?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Thanks! I will give it a try over the summer. Do i need to watch fire first or can i just jump in?

    ReplyDelete
  33. He'd do well at PR for the networks. I don't get why he tries to put down shows he doesn't watch though, it's odd.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm just glad that Empire didn't destroy it

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's an increase from last week.

    ReplyDelete
  36. There's some serial elements, but it's very easy to figure out if you haven't seen an episode of the series. I think that you can just jump right in as the characters explain themselves enough that you wouldn't get lost.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I say its childish; I think he simply doesn't like genre shows and if he has a chance to put them down, he will

    ReplyDelete
  38. Mark feels too insecure in his love affair with the virgin so he has to talk down the competition and keep spinnig and spinning the virgin

    ReplyDelete
  39. The show is more about African American culture than it is about hip hop.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Empire is killing it. So glad.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Same here. I was quite afraid for it.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It is also crazy how biased he is for cbs. He comments on the shows, gives schedule changes recaps, talks about pilots, its crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  43. EMPIRE!!!
    http://media.giphy.com/media/kR0S22SGVDm4o/giphy.gif

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am not fan of hip hop music either, but the songs in first 2 episodes were actually nice (i will watch Ep 3 today), actors are phenomenal, characters are all amazing as well, interesting storylines, by the end of Ep 2 i guess mafia or something like that might be part of it too

    ReplyDelete
  45. That may be worth a try, I'd be really interested in learning more about African American culture, which to be honest I don't know anything about. Thanks for the quick reply :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. Too bad The 100 doesn't follow TWD's pattern of increasing in audience every season.

    ReplyDelete
  47. No need to watch Chicago Fire. CPD is a standalone show for the most part. If you want to binge watch only CPD just skip the crossover episodes and you won't really miss much.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's not about African-American culture.

It's a show about a dysfunctional family that used to be poor and now have a major empire.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Logic says that at some point the growth has to stall because American Idol can provide only so much of a lead in, but who knows. It really is a case study with Empire right now.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Add in all the praise he gives CBS shows and JTV it seems like a lot of unnecessary extra work. I wonder if he gets any comments calling him out on it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sounds like I should check it out! After all, worst case scenario it just isn't my cup of tea, but I heard so many great things about it that I think its worth the risk; if I come to enjoy that much it would be great (not to mention that it is always nice to watch a show regularly without worrying about its renewal chances).
    Thanks for the reply :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. I wish it did, but hey, at least the show is stable. That's something

    ReplyDelete
  53. There are more overarching elements of the show that go far beyond the family dynamics of the Lyons.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Pablo,

It is not about African-American culture. It is about a dysfunctional family that deals with issues of abandonment, lost love, death, race, and homophobia.

It just happens to star African-Americans and some racial components that are a part of it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Is it comparable Nashville? I've tired the first two episodes of Nashville and wasn't my cup of tea.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks for the clarification!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'll take a look over the pilot at the weekend; people describe in some many ways that it seems the only real way to know for sure what it is about is to go watch the show

    ReplyDelete
  58. What's drawing so many people to Empire? I really loved the pilot but dropped it after the 2nd episode because it bored me half to death. I was going to give episode 3 a try but didn't bother, I have enough shows to watch.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Great for Arrow! Hoping for a 1.1 or maybe even a 1.2! Let's hope for The 100 to keep doing 0.5/0.6s and to not drop!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Grey's Anatomy had its already very impressive series premiere as its actual series low up until later in its 4th season! That was insane back then. Also, Scandal has been growing every single season and it is already its 4th year. House M.D. grew systematically until its third season when it peaked (raw numbers wise). There are more examples actually, these are just on top of my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'm so glad Marc Berman's opinions differ from mine. If I had the same mindset as him, I would retire to a deserted island and spend my days talking to cracked coconuts.
He is an example of why no one should ever let someone else's opinions validate their own,

    ReplyDelete
  62. I think there is probably some sort of snow ball effect in place. It's such an outright hit that many people want to see what the fuss is all about.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Then go to his Twitter page and complain to him directly. It makes no sense to me why people complain about him on here when he obviously won't see it. Go to where he'll see it like I've done in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I feel like the only thing they have in common is that they include music. Well, and they are both dramas. Characters are very different and so are the storylines

    ReplyDelete
  65. But to say that it is "about African-American culture" is problematic. Yes, they are African-American, and that is part of their characters. However, the show is not "about" African-American culture.

    ReplyDelete
  66. He is absolutely the only thing I do not like about the ratings here. He is so biased and patronizing.

    ReplyDelete
  67. But the trends were different; Scandal didn't actually grow until episode 8 of season 2, when Fitz was shot.
House started low and started growing over the second half of its first season. And Grey's, though a huge hit since the beginning, had a more scattered pattern of growth.

So far Empire is trending steadily upwards, and that is very rare

    ReplyDelete
  68. Episode 3 is way better than Episode 2. :)

    ReplyDelete
  69. That's what I thought when I saw it go up for the 2nd episode but if it's up again that's really surprising! Really good for FOX too, I wonder how long it will last though.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Oh, believe me, I do complain in his twitter, I just share the sentiment here as well because I know it bothers not only me, but a lot of people

    ReplyDelete
  71. Not like it matters because its a rerun, but Modern Family aired at 10:30 and isn't in the table.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Can't help you here.. I love Hip Hop music and have been a fan of Timbaland since If Your Girl Only Knew. As soon as the news about him joining Empire, I was on board.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Revenge and OUAT22 January 2015 at 14:46

in terms of quality the 100 Is so much better than arrow

    ReplyDelete
  74. Because we can comment on anything and everything here.
I've tweeted him once. He is not unaware that he is a cracked editor and half-assed writer.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Gotta disagree.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Agree; Arrow is great, it has a lot of action, good drama and well built tension over its episodes, especially during its splendid second season.

But The 100 does all that and does it better, and it is way more thought provoking than Arrow is

    ReplyDelete
  77. I'm glad there wasn't a HH release on Monday, he would have talked non stop about its golden globe win. Then again, we can expect that for next Monday

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yeah I get your point about Scandal and House .Grey's was exactly like this though. Grey's was always growing.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Anyone know where / when the ratings for stuff like Comedy Central comes out? I'd be interested to see how Workaholics is doing, though I don't really know what's good / not so good for a network like that.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Revenge and OUAT22 January 2015 at 14:54

Very true! Arrow is harder to write of the two but the 100 has really good writing!!! Arrow has fantastic fighting scenes and so does the 100. There are many times where arrow has been cringeworthy. Also, I have Mixed feelings about Oliver being killed (well not really) . I still have to watch "left behind" tonight and will see how that goes.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Revenge and OUAT22 January 2015 at 14:54

Could you give a reason? Just out of curiosity

    ReplyDelete
  82. Wasn't Desperate Housewives always growing on its first season too?

Regardless, Grey's own innate growth is what allowed it to truly benefit from the Super Bowl's exposure, IMHO. And that's why, I think, The Blacklist won't benefit from it either

    ReplyDelete
  83. I said that the show was more about African American culture than it is about hip hop. Not necessarily that it was ALL about African American culture.

But even within the Lyon family many scenarios are pictures of overall African American culture. A big example of that being Lucious's homophobia, and there are a lot of smaller examples that can be seen throughout the series so far.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Arrow is my current favorite show and one of my most favorite among with Once, Buffy, Angel, etc. The 100 has never gripped me the same way and though I watch it, it's not one of my favs.

    ReplyDelete
  85. thanks, I forgot about that.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I agree, I liked Arrow in season 1 then dropped it in season 2 but I never loved it as much as I do The 100. The writing and acting in The 100 is much much better imo, and so is the CGI.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Showbuzz is probably the best place for cable ratings

    http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/tag/cable

    ReplyDelete
  88. It depends on what fails22 January 2015 at 15:04

    Empire is unstoppable.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Homophobia is rampant in white Southern American culture, too, especially in the Bible Belt. It's not a characteristic that defines African-Americans.

    ReplyDelete
  90. It depends on what fails22 January 2015 at 15:06

So is Empire network TV's Walking Dead?

    ReplyDelete
  91. I can't actually choose. The first season of the 100 was vastly superior to the first season of Arrow and I feel like Arrow tends to be more hit or miss than the 100 which is always good, but Arrow has sometimes in which it is mind blowing good. I love both.

    ReplyDelete
  92. r we getting ratings a hour late than last year???
    just curious.
    if it is why?

    ReplyDelete
  93. http://www.spottedratings.com/2011/10/spotvault-desperate-housewives-abc-2004.html

DH didn't grow in week 2 but was indeed growing in a pretty consistent way the following weeks, yes.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Camon Arrow 1.3/1.4 please

    ReplyDelete
  95. Fantastic for Empire.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I heard that finals will be back on track starting today. Is this true? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  97. Why does Marc Berman keep insulting shows he doesn't like instead of just reporting the facts? It's very misleading imo.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Just checked; it turned out that you were right, it did constantly grow, even hitting regular 10s at some time, which was really surprising!

Well, if Empire ends up following the Grey's Anatomy trend then that's already a HUGE accomplishment for the show.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I've not heard any official announcement from Nielsen about the Finals yet. Where did you hear that?

    ReplyDelete
  100. They should be but Nielsen has been off since the holidays.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I agree. Grey's Anatomy is one of the biggest television hits in history I think so anything compared to that show is huge .

    ReplyDelete
  102. Showbuzzdaily. They could be wrong though I would trust Nielsen more...

    ReplyDelete
  103. Let's not act like homophobia isn't present in the African-American community, though, or in the hip hop/r&b world. Just because something disgusting happens in one community doesn't mean the same disgusting thing happening in your own backyard is less disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Thanks. Showbuzz are normally very reliable. So lets hope they are right ;)

    ReplyDelete
  105. I'm not saying that homophobia is not an issue outside of the black community. The show itself highlights the fact that homophobia is a problem in the black community.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Remember his number 1 mission this year: spin his damn virgin and badmouth every other show on its path.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Because it's his column and website! He can champion what he wants! It's not completely fact reporting on TVMI

    ReplyDelete
  108. What does camon mean?

    ReplyDelete
  109. Pretty obvious really. C'mon

    ReplyDelete
  110. Gangsta Paradise22 January 2015 at 15:33

    Top 25 ??

    ReplyDelete
  111. He's asking if we're getting them today. lol

    ReplyDelete
  112. Gangsta Paradise22 January 2015 at 15:34

    Where are they ?

    ReplyDelete
  113. If they are not in the table, then it means we don't have any yet.

    ReplyDelete
  114. They are not always released, they are post if DarkUFO gets them; this season in particular we've been having a lot of them, which is incredible, but they won't be posted every day necessarily.
Still, they could be on their way, so it's a matter of patience

    ReplyDelete
  115. Except he is not championing anything, he's being insulting and condescending. Since he is an "editor" of a TV news site, during pieces such as these, he should just state facts and save his opinions for editorial pieces. That's what professionals do.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Marc has been trashing shows with bad retention for years.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I like Chicago PD more than most procedurals. You actually get to know the characters, and the show has done a really good job of building relationships. Some of the characters have been on Fire and sometimes the shows crossover, but you don't really need to watch it to understand PD. Antonio Dawson is the brother of Gabriella Dawson, a paramedic/firefighter. Sgt. Voight was on Fire and some people think he's a dirty cop. That's pretty much what you need to know. You should give it a try!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Good for The Mentalist in his last season. The rate increase on households for The Mentalist from 5.7 / 9 to a home rate is 6.2 / 10. A good increase pending the hearing and the rate on 18-49ans! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  119. ITA - that's a primarly reason I stopped visiting his site.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Damn!!! Empire is a beast.

  122. I loved Taraji in Person of Interest so it was my main reason for first checking out the show. Cookie's the reason I am sticking with it. :)

  123. Personal taste is completely fine; some people just like some things better and sometimes it is just more about a gut feeling than an objective reason, but I would encourage you to say what makes Arrow a better show.

  124. The 100 fans whining about Marc-he uses Retrntion & if a show improved its timeslot over what was there before. The 100 has poor Retrntion, barely half of Arrows audience( 0.6 of 1.4,0.5 of 1.1,0.6,of 1.1)-yet people bash Reigns retention.Arrow is Czws second or third highest rated show, depending on SPN that week. The 100 should be doing better flowing such a high rated leadin.Second,The 100 is getting 0.5s that got TTP banished to Mon,it's not improving the timeslot.I don't think The 100 will or should get a third shot behind Arrow next season.

  125. TTP got banished to Monday after pulling a 0.4 out of Arrow. The 100 usually does 0.6
It looks like a small difference, but in The CW world that is a huge gap

  126. I believe Marc meant Chicago PD not Chicago Fire....

Glad that Fox finally has a monster hit on their hands...

  127. Already answered above. The 100 never gripped me enough and never clicked for me the way other shows do. Your opinion is too as subjective as mine :) and we each have our own grip about a certain show's quality, writing, characters and such.
There are specific moments that made me hooked to certain shows such as the first polar bear at Lost, the moment Oliver brought Diggle in on Arrow, etc., and I've yet to find such moment on The 100, so I watch it on marathons every few months and not on a weekly basis.

  128. Facts:
    - GG win: doesn't make money for the CW
    - great reviews: doesn't make money for the CW
    - great critical acclaim: doesn't make money for the CW
    - great retention out of TO: doesn't make money for the CW and both the Virgin and the 100 have shown to be lead-in independents anyway when aired out of Hart of Dixie and Arrow repeats, respectively, so it is irrelevant
    - it is improving its timeslot: the bar was set ridiculously low by Beauty and the Beast. The Tomorrow People was far more competent, so it really isn't a fair comparison. In addition, shows improve timeslots all the time and are still failures (see: Forever on ABC).
    - "Even HoD managed to get a 0.5 in its first half hour on Fri with no high rated leadin": that is what the virgin gets as well...

  129. Why does Marc feel the need to insult a show in every analysis? Except Jane The Virgin of course.

  130. Brandy tries to put down The 100 like Marc does, I wouldn't bother trying to reason with them :P

  131. Yeah, Gotham was only going to get them so far, so Empire is their true hope for suviving

  132. And Empire grows some more:
    4.3

  133. The 100 usually gets 0.5,it's only got three 0.6since mid to late season one.P,us,it's a tv show!!!Why be so butthurt over what someone you guys don't knows says/thinks ?TTzp was announced as moving to Mon after a few 0.5s,even before the one 0.4
