Keep in mind, as always, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
-Winners:
NFL Football: “AFC Championship” (CBS), “Scorpion” (CBS)
-Losers:
Everything else.

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was all about the NFL Football “AFC Championship” on CBS, of course, with the Indianapolis Colts at the New England Patriots at an estimated 25.1 rating/38 share in the household overnights for the 7-10 p.m. ET portion. The peak half-hour was a 27.4/32 at 8 p.m., and the results are estimated due to the live nature of the event. Keep in mind that the Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and Tulsa markets were excluded from the averages.
Leading out of a 20.8/31 for the 9:30 p.m. portion of the game/post-game was a special Sunday 10-11 p.m. edition of already renewed CBS freshman drama “Scorpion” at an estimated 11.0/18.
Elsewhere, only ABC was bold enough to air all original programming opposite the “AFC Championship” and it cost them. Veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” opened with a 2.9/ 5 in the overnights from 7-8 p.m., followed by recent entry “Galavant” (#3: 2.2/ 3), sophomore “Resurrection” (#2: 2.5/ 4) and “Revenge” (#2: 3.0/ 5) from 8-11 p.m.
NBC populated this night of football with repeats of “Dateline” (#3: 2.8/ 5 from 7-8 p.m.) and 2011 theatrical “Bridesmaids” (2.1/ 3 from 8-11 p.m.). And Fox burned-off another episode of sitcom “Mulaney” (#2: 3.0/ 5 at 7 p.m.) into encore telecasts of “The Simpsons” (7:30 p.m.: #4, 1.9/ 3; 8 p.m.: #3: 2.0/ 3), “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (#4: 1.6/ 2), “Family Guy” (#4: 1.7/ 2) and “Bob’s Burgers” (#4: 1.8/ 2) from 7:30-10 p.m.

I am really confused right now.
ReplyDeleteI think next year ABC should simply air movies like ABC is doing here. Use the first Sunday of the month to premiere the bachelor since it is such a positive night for broadcasters (high PUT, low competition from cable and sports) but then stop and get back in the game in march only. Maybe an occasional bachelor special, but not more than that. Movies should be able to get high 0s or even cross a 1.0 every once in a while. It's better than sacrificing the shows like this.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't seem like Revenge hit a new low. Two weeks ago it had a 3.1 overnight. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteHow much did revenge fall?
ReplyDeleteThat is what i thought as well
ReplyDeleteat least i'm hoping for a 0.9
ReplyDeleteWhat did it do last week?
ReplyDelete0.8
ReplyDeleteI mean in HH
ReplyDeletethey didn't show its HH due to ratings delays
ReplyDeleteOh okay right. How was the episode?
ReplyDeleteFANTASTIC.
ReplyDeleteit was awesome! so much action
ReplyDeleteSo great to hear. I will watch it tonight. Was it really rated tv-14?
ReplyDeleteYAY :)
ReplyDeleteyep. lots of violence
ReplyDeleteCool :)
ReplyDeleteI will have a great night of tv!!!
ReplyDeleteBut the setup for the rest of the season is dumb. I won't spoil it for you though.
ReplyDeleteThx for not spoiling it. I want to be surprised! :)
ReplyDeleteWe just have the overnights, I can never tell from those
ReplyDeleteOh yeah that's right!
ReplyDelete2.5 hh for resurrection is low
ReplyDeletetheres no room for Revenge to fall. if it falls even a tenth will seem like a lot, cause it will be down to a 0.7. fingers crossed that it will at least get a 0.9
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised it built from Galavant though maybe the game becoming a blowout around 9 helped. It was a close game until the 3rd quarter.
ReplyDeleteBoth Revenge and Resurrection are doomed, so that's not an unbearable sacrifice, after all... Galavant already had little chance of renewal, too.
ReplyDeleteSomething else I disagree with Berman on. "Only ABC was bold enough" Not bold, stupid, or arrogant. They have the common sense of inanimate objects. Not that I'm complaining, I don't like ABC.
ReplyDeleteRevenge did the best of all three last night
ReplyDeleteAgreed
ReplyDeletenot a fan of the solution either but think it is better than Malcolm black.
ReplyDeleteResurrection is doomed. if abc hadn't aired Revenge in January then it would've had more chances of being renewed for a short final season
ReplyDeleteI still don't think there is need to do it this way. Also, they didn't actually know that the shows would be doomed when they planned the year like this.
ReplyDeleteTop 25 Market numbers have now been posted
ReplyDeleteGalavant just died, it seems :(. Unless it recovers next week with no NFC Championship it is certainly gone.
ReplyDeleteagreed ABC never learns
ReplyDeleteYeah, but early scheduling is meant to be modified, if it's just woth doing it. Given the earlier collapse of R&R, this was simply not the case.
ReplyDeletelooks like Revenge did about the same as last week
ReplyDeleteI guess they are testing how Scorpion would do on Sunday's?
ReplyDeleteGalavant is officially dead
The Following (2014): 4.4
ReplyDeleteHawaii Five-0 (2013): 3.5
Hawaii Five-0 (2011): 5.6
I don't actually remember what was the FOX lead out in 2012. Does anyone know?
I cannot see the top 25
ReplyDeleteThey wanted to have it sampled by the NFC audience, which is huge
ReplyDeletethey aren't testing anything...
ReplyDeleteNo, they just wanted to promote their hit new show behind the juggernaut AFC Championship,
ReplyDeleteit got a 1.0 in the top 25
ReplyDeleteI cannot see the table for some reason :/
ReplyDeleteNot as huge as it couldve been though. CBS had to be disappointed the game became a blowout.
ReplyDeleteNo way Revenge would have been renewed for a shorter final season anyway, with low 1s at best and no syndication deal so far.
ReplyDeleteIt's there, just refresh. I see 1.0 for your show.
ReplyDeleteOh that's right... The only time I watch football is the Super Bowl so didn't realize
ReplyDeleteOh okay so probably 0.8
ReplyDeleteIt surely is disappointing. Scorpion should have done at least 4s; it is a freshman, a prodecurial and a male skewing show, it had all the cards to have better retention
ReplyDeleteWasn't the game over, at 10.00? I gues that's the main reason it didn't do (even) worse.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Revenge is leading the ABC line-up. HAHAHA.
ReplyDeleteYeah i see them now :)
ReplyDeleteya but scorpion had a huge following after the game
ReplyDeleteScorpion did not as high as i had expe4
ReplyDeleteWell, kinda ahah.
ReplyDeleteI too expected Scorpion to do better.
ReplyDeleteI agree, this is disappointing. But maybe the game was a blowout? We need to see the 9h30 lead-in to judge its retention (and last night was all about retention)
ReplyDeleteMost Texas markets and Tulsa are excluded from these numbers for some reason. I wonder if that has a little to do with it? The game was a glorious blowout though and I watched every second of it.
ReplyDeleteIt was a huge blowout.
ReplyDeleteAnd maybe there will be huge adjustments too. I remember when initially it was reported that New Girl got a 7.8 after the SB and then it got adjusted up to 11.4
ReplyDeleteI don't expect such a massive adjustment, but something of the sort could happen for Scorpion. We'll have to wait and see
Two years ago Revenge hadn't collapsed and they still aired it there. Last year, I also didn't think Revenge had collapsed in the fall (though it wasn't a breakout either) but they still aired it there. They don't seem to be willing to change it.
ReplyDeleteIt had, indeed. Still, nothing comparable to the game's ratings.
ReplyDeleteIs it true that Revenge is going to be an extra episode for this season?
ReplyDeletePossible, there could be huge adjustments to come too, so these top 25 look disappointing now, but we won't know for sure until later.
ReplyDeleteBut so far, a 3.1 out of a 15.2 look awful. 20% retention from a show that looked as the perfect lead out? That's gotta sting
Scorpion got hit on a couple of fronts - 1) the 10 pm start time was blow when the Seattle/GB game went to OT and NFL pushed back start time to 6:50; 2) the game was a complete and messy blow out. The audience was definitely dropping in fourth quarter; 3) the post-game presentation started after 10, so it was pretty much a washout for Scorpion. (And it was airing live in a time zones -because it had 8 p.m. start here in MT.)
ReplyDeleteYes they will be having a clip show hyprid
ReplyDeleteya but that extra episode is just going to be a clip
ReplyDeleteYep, it is confirmed. It is said to be a clip episode hybrid
ReplyDeleteSo it's not a real episode?
ReplyDeleteNope
ReplyDeleteIt will be counted as one
ReplyDeleteI usually watch Scorpion on Mondays...I didn't even know it was on last night. Likely a lot of other Scorpion fans didn't know either. As for Galavant, I love that show...I wish it was doing better. :(
ReplyDeleteI was referring to this year only, of course you might be right, and this could be just lazyness by the network, but trying AC and Galavant in January is something new, at least.
ReplyDeletet's sad how ABC killed Galavant,. How can the expect the show to do good if ater the premiere goes agains an award show and then a big game.... And Revenge im used to those ratings at this point. Last year was teh same, going agains everything there was in january
ReplyDeleteABC killed Galavant because they saw the final product. There's a reason why the doubled-up the episodes to clear it out as soon as possible. Plus, networks DO have to air something. Can't go dark because other network has something big. Better Galavant than OUAT, I believe most fans would say.
ReplyDeleteYeah you are right. What was The Following's preliminary from last year?
ReplyDeleteApparently so.
ReplyDeleteThat's bad for Scorpian, right, considering the leadin?
ReplyDeleteWell it is far from being bad but it should have done better
ReplyDeleteThe lead-in is misleading in this case. We need to see the 9h30 half hour numbers, not the average for the entire game.
ReplyDeleteThe game was _supposed_ to be over at 10 - didn't actually get off the air until 10:30. If I hadn't had to review Scorpion before the next new episode tonight, I would NOT have waited...
ReplyDeleteBoy, did they pick the wrong episode to do that!
ReplyDeleteWhy did they Order it to a series If they wanted it cancelled anyway
ReplyDeleteWe really shouldn't use the retention metric like that in these events. Two reasons:
ReplyDelete1) Retention is a very tricky metric in these instances since there is always bound to exist a huge degree of rejection from people that only turn on the TV to watch the game
2) If we still want retention in spite of this, we need to see the numbers from the game in the last half hour (ideally ta 9h59 actually) because those tend to make a huuuge difference. If the game is a blow out like it apparently was, the greater number will be on the first part of the game, whereas the later portion will be much lower - the overall average does not show that picture.
The game was a blowout and Scorpion started really late.
ReplyDeleteAll things considered it got a decent sampling, which was the entire point of the special poat-football episode.
Because it didn't even start until 10:30 - I wouldn't have waited for it if I hadn't had to get the review up before the next new episode tonight. Honestly, if stupid football is always going to run late, why not just deal with it and run a 1/2 hour comedy after it? It always baffles me.
ReplyDelete4.4, I think?
ReplyDeleteRight. It started around 10;20-10:25 here. I watched the entire game, post game and Scorpion. I was absolutely glued to my TV last night. Loved it!
ReplyDeleteYeah Scorpion must have started and ended really late on the east coast because it was still on past 11pm here in the Midwest.
ReplyDeleteShame Scorpion not higher but def a victim of the NFC game being so good and OT causing a delay to the AFL game, and then the AFL game being an utter blowout, and then not airing Scorpion until 10.30, 30 mins after the game ended. Then again it did get the good slot so shouldn't complain too much, lol
ReplyDeleteat this point i don't think that we could really tell until they make the adjustments
ReplyDeleteThat was the final. Were there no adjustments? Doesn't matter much anyway ;)
ReplyDeleteSo it went from about 10:30-11:30 then? I wasn't paying attention because I was at a bar and after the game the bartender switched the channel to ESPN.
ReplyDeleteLots of factors caused Scorpion to be lower than the Following was last year, but all in all I think it got a decent sampling.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2014/01/ratings-news-20th-january-2014.html
ReplyDeleteSeems the prelims were a 4.4 as well. Half-hours were 6.7/3.6.
It ended around 11:20 here.
ReplyDeleteI looked it up; it seems FOX didn't have a lead out in 2012, the game just ran longer.
ReplyDeleteHere is the post I found on TVBTN
http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/01/24/sunday-final-ratings-undercover-boss-adjusted-up-pan-am-adusted-down-giants49ers/117320/
Been looking for them, but haven't found any preliminaries; it seems once released, The Following had its finals already
ReplyDeletehttp://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/01/20/tv-ratings-sunday-the-following-returns-up-revenge-betrayal-down-as-nfc-championship-wins-big/230454/
You'll learn never to doubt a fellow mate ;)
ReplyDeleteFootball wrecked everything
ReplyDeleteThanks. I found out that FOX ordered the fast adjusted nationals for that night, hence the 4.4 we got right away. But those halves are preliminary I think. I don't have last year's final halves, but for instance two years ago, H50 had a 5.4 -> 2.7 in the prelims and became a much less drastic 4.4 (10:16-10:30) -> 3.2 (10:30-11:00) in finals.
ReplyDeleteI"ve never hoped for Netflix to save a show before, but I'm hoping for it to save Galavant now. Futile I know, but I just don't want to say goodbye to it now.
ReplyDeletehopefully with the competition being over Revenge will at least get a 1.0 next week
ReplyDeleteScorpion: 3.0
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
ReplyDeleteGalavant: 0.9
ReplyDeleteResurrection: 0.7
Revenge: 0.9
Resurrection is poison.
Mulaney: 1.5
ReplyDelete(?)
NFL postgame (leading into Scorpion) got a 5.6
ReplyDeleteI am one of the rare people still watching Resurrection and it is actually a shame that the show that it is now didn't turn up right from the beginning. I've found this season, especially the later portion, infinitely better than season 1. I was never blown away with it last year like everyone was and almost stopped watching but for some strange reason I kept going and I am actually glad I did. It is not of my favorite shows but I ended up liking it quite a lot, I will miss it.
ReplyDeletethe game before it overran ending at around 6:40. There might have been post game coverage hence the gain.
ReplyDeleteHm? Lol
ReplyDeleteI agree, season 2 is much better, shame people already gave up on it
ReplyDeleteMulaney pull that rabbit of the hat that number. Surprised me as well.
ReplyDeleteMichelle Fairley character helped a lot I feel. She brings something new to the show and makes everything seem more tight and with a purpose.
ReplyDeleteWas never a show that interested me so...
ReplyDeleteBetter for revenge than I expected :) over 4 million again! :)
ReplyDeleteI think it had great potential, but the slow pace didn't help it
ReplyDeleteMy favorite character, by far
ReplyDeleteFull Ratings are now in the post.
ReplyDeleteNow that makes more sense
ReplyDeleteya i expected it to get like a 0.7-0.8. but i think with it being a 0.9 it will have a better chance next without all of the competition to get at least a 1.0
ReplyDeleteI wish it had hit at least 1, but hey! I'll take anything at this point
ReplyDeleteI agree with that and I've criticized the show a lot for it. But I feel it has improved. They've started having multiple storylines going per episode which means that even one storyline is more on slow pace mode, there is stuff happening on another one. And the story has really been evolving with revelations and stuff. It will never be a high paced show a la Scandal or Revenge, but it has improved on the pace I feel.
ReplyDeleteThe blowout really didn't help Scorpion but I'm ok with those numbers coming out of the post game.
ReplyDeleteIt will hit a 1.1 next week i am guessing but i never guessed it to rise against football
ReplyDeleteNo problem :)
ReplyDelete"yeah" for Revenge, up from last week
ReplyDeleteat least it will have a better chance in going above a 1 next week
ReplyDeleteNot even a series high for Scorpion? I expected at least that.
ReplyDeleteYes and i cannot wait to see what people on TVBTN will say since they wanted it to Hit a 0.7
ReplyDeleteIf it hits a 1.1 I'll be truly happy because that means there is a chance for it to bounce back up, even more with Secrets and Lies coming up in March, so here's hoping it actually helps Revenge snatch that final season renewal!
ReplyDeleteHope has somehow started returning :)
Same here, I'm actually surprised it didn't do better
ReplyDeleteFor me as well and revenge actually did the best of all three last night on abc
ReplyDeleteIt should adjust up in the finals when time zone adjusted ratings come in but still will be below The Following.
ReplyDeleteIt should have done better.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch the show but I thought it will double its usual ratings
ReplyDeleteSoon ABC will be airing originals up against the Super Bowl -_-
ReplyDeletedon't give them ideas :(
ReplyDelete"Abducted" has been my favorite episode since the season 3 finale, so now I truly believe there is a good reinvention for it coming up and that the show can hit some truly great beats so it can end amazing in season 5 - should that happen.
ReplyDeletewell its still a bad rating, but i think people at TVBTN are going to be like "no excuses for revenge cause it didn't exactly compete against the game"
ReplyDeleteThose people are crazy. You really should stop reading what they say.
ReplyDeleteWow everything is really low except Football and Scorpion.
ReplyDeleteSame as me
ReplyDeleteIts lead-in was a 5.6 post-game show (probably even lower at the end of the half-hour).
ReplyDeleteYes but revenge, resurrection and Galavant will all not be airing then anymore :)
ReplyDeleteWell Fox and NBC aired Repeats, so no surprise there.
ReplyDeleteAgree; aside from going there to look what puns they make with the cancellation bear each week there's not much of a reason to return there
ReplyDeleteme too, even though a 0.9 is an awful rating. i'm still happy that it will have a better chance of rising above a 1 and hopefully with secrets and lies as a lead in, it will bounce back to its low ones again
ReplyDeleteYeah. If it manages to be above 1, and even get to 1.2-1.3, the final season renewal may be still upon as.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, 0.9 is an awful rating, only good on The CW, but in this week in particular it gives some hope for a comeback!
So frustrated by Galavant. Not that I watch the show or begrudge those who do, but it feels like this is the show that helped expedite the cancellation of The Neighbors, which I feel was unjust. ABC gave up on the possibility of a small syndication deal and a show with a small but loyal audience for a big budget, polarizing burn off that has no shot of making any money or getting to syndication. And it's not like Galavant was ever going to sell a lot of songs a'la Empire or Nashville, so what, did they do all of this to get one Emmy nomination that they're not even guaranteed right now? So stupid.
ReplyDeleteScorpion:3.0 is an awesome number for Sunday night (total viewer is 10m, not match its rating imo), guess people are expecting more than this. And probably adjust down in final ratings.
ReplyDeleteThat was about its TBBT premiere lead in, so it could have done a couple of tenths higher. Not to mention that I assume some of those were strangers to Scorpion and could have watched it after with its core audicence, so I'm still a bit surprised it is only low 3s, but it does make MUCH more sense than when it looked like it was doing a 3.1 out of a 15.2
ReplyDeletethis weeks episode was sooooo good. its one of the best this season, so i definitely expect a rise after this episode
ReplyDeleteThere was a lead out in 2012: an episode of American Idol which I think did high 7's if I recall correctly. But yes, it aired past 11 PM EST...
ReplyDeleteIt did a 3.0 out if a 5.6 post game show. At 10:20. So I'm not to heavily disappointed. If it had done a 3.0 at 10pm following a close game where the ratings for the game didn't drop in the last hour, it would be a different story.
ReplyDeleteThe information I have is that it was an 30 minutes show.
ReplyDeleteLast year the Following got a 4.4...
ReplyDeleteMaybe that's why I haven't found any info on that, it aired after Prime Time. I'll check on that
ReplyDeleteGalavant tanked even worse, Ressurection sunk to the bottom and Revenge is still below 1.0, terrible night for ABC.
ReplyDeleteLow for Scorpion given the lead-in.
I like to participate in the scheduling discussions that happen there, but that's about it.
ReplyDeleteI think that would be Cristela. It was a failed pilot that airs when the Neighbors did and was a last second pickup as in a bundle with FOTB.
ReplyDeleteYep, we know as per the table :)
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, The Following's lead in was a 21.0 in the laft half our
ReplyDeleteOkay....
ReplyDeleteI find Revenge to be on top of its game creatively right now. It's just firing in all the right cylinders. This is a personal opinion and I know Season 4 hasn't worked for a lot of people but it just pains me to see the ratings like this. It is still one of my favorite hours of television, for sure.
ReplyDeleteReally? Wow, that's terrible!
ReplyDeletePlease do. I can only go by fuzzy memory lol.
ReplyDeleteAha didn't know that, thank you! But CBS only tried promoting Scorpion so rating doesn't matter to them:)
ReplyDeleteDisappointed by Scorpion's ratings.
ReplyDeleteGalavant is so getting cancelled.
It makes it look pretty bad in comparison
ReplyDeleteusually the first season is the most important season when it comes to show. cause the first season is when a show is supposed to find its audience. its unfortunate that it had slow pace storytelling in its first season, which is why the audience left that fast.
ReplyDeleteIs it that good now?
ReplyDeleteThat's why it's no surprise the Following hit a 1.4 last season.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny. Well, we can say Revenge is ABC's number 1 show on Sunday for this week.
ReplyDeleteme too. but lets hope that it will go back to its low ones in spring after secrets and lies
ReplyDeleteI'm watching the episode and it's like the writers heard some of our prayers
ReplyDeletethese last few episodes in particular have been intense a lot of action. The pace has been really quick this season
ReplyDeleteThe NFC Championship ended after 6:45 PM/5:45 in the east coast/central time zone, probably some people stayed 15 minutes on fox and tuned in for Mulolney.
ReplyDeleteBiggest if that no one cares abot of the year: will FOX burn ir off against the super bowl?
Put it against the Blacklist. It will totally destroy it.
ReplyDeletehalf hours? :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like it is true. American Idol did air an episode January 22 on 2012, which was a Sunday night. It scored a 7.9
ReplyDeleteThanks for noticing it! Now I was able to find it :D
Revenge: 0.9/0.8
ReplyDeletecrap! hope it stays at that 0.9, it's not great but still an improvement from the last episode
ReplyDeleteNot really when I just read above that The Following had a 4.4 out of a 21.0 lead in. As opposed to Scorpion with a 5.6 lead in and late start.
ReplyDeleteIt was recently pointed out to mee that something aired after the game in 2012, American Idol, which got a 7.9. I had a hard time finding the number because it aired after prime time, but here it is
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spottedratings.com/2012/01/spotted-ratings-sunday-12212-nielsen.html
I am not convinced Secrets and Lies itself will work but let's hope for the best.
ReplyDeletereally hope it keeps that 0.9 in the finals
ReplyDeleteOh I remember now! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI agree
ReplyDelete"Abducted" was perfection for me and I was a big season 4 doubter! I think the show really found the way to reinvigorate itself again. Now I believe Paul Lee when he says there are ways to reinvent it: the episode got me excited as I hasn't been for a long time!
ReplyDeleteHappy about that Scorpion rating. I know people probably expected higher, but given how the Patriots completely demolished the Colts, most people probably changed the channel sometime in the 3rd/4th quarter(like me). Considering that, a 3.0 is pretty solid.
ReplyDeleteIt will not adjust down. When it hit a 1.5 its half hours were 1.5/1.4
ReplyDeleteThe problem with the March argument is that (1) I have a lot of doubts about Secrets and Lies really finding an audience and (2) It will probably be too late by then for the writers to change the plan for the finale, whether it is a series or season one. My pet idea is actually that they renew it for an 8 episode final season to be used as TGIT bridge. But that's a long shot I think.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I am quite happy that you are liking the season more, I know you had your doubts, it's great to have you passionate about revenge again.

The 1/2 hr's have no bearing on adjustments.
ReplyDeleteI had a similar idea to have Revenge renewed to be used as a bridge, only with 11 episodes to get it to 100 - maybe do a 2 hour season premiere and a 2 hour series finale? -, anyway, I know it's a long shot. Right now I think the writers should do something that serves both as a series finale and as a season finale, just like Chuck did every season.
ReplyDeleteAnd no one's more happy than me to regain my passion about the show than me! I really missed that feeling of intense excitement that I had every time I finished an episode; last week's episode got close, but this week got me to truly feel it once again, and boy, was that awesome!
That blowout caused a massive drop in numbers for the AFC. A 13.6 in the first half hour to a 9.3 in the last half hour to a 5.6 post game. I'm even more ok with Scorpion's numbers now. I still watched Brady, Blount and company til the end.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I'm not ecstatic about them but I'm not hugely disappointed. I didn't change the channel though. I kept watching.
