  1. OMG Gideon .....such a touching episode I loved Ben Savage they choice a great younger Gideon........My Issue Can No one ever be happy on Criminal Minds can they never be happy? Do they always have to lose loved ones?

  2. Welp, that ending had me sobbing.
How did this, of all reasons for the flashback episode about Gideon, not occur to me? When I first saw the car I thought it'd be a flashback to that night in 2007...until I saw Reid's face. Then it was just a stream of "Oh, no, oh, no, oh, no...". God. Poor, poor Reid. He friggin' broke my heart this episode. So did Rossi.
Incredibly sad as it was, though, it was a good episode. Ben did a great job playing young Gideon, and I loved the moments between him and young Rossi, and the nods to their respective families (nice to see Steven (Stephen?), too). Creepy case as well. All the stuff with the birds. Ewwwwwwwwww.
So yeah. Well done. Heartbreaking as hell, but well done.

Ben Savage was a great Gideon! It is a shame they killed Gideon off.

  4. It was a creepy case so sad about Gideon and Reid being so loss about his death I like how everyone cares so much about each other it was nice seeing pass Gideon and Rossi

    These are my thoughts.

  6. I just hope Reid doesn't return to drugs. He's had such a lonely life. The writers of this show must really hate Reid's character to cause him such grief.

  7. But it made no sense that an unsophisticated dumb creep like that was able to take out Gideon, who had taken on and beaten much stronger adversaries.
I did question that, too, yeah-look at how he handled the Footpath Killer. But then again, they did say that he purposefully put himself out there as a target for this guy, so...maybe he was willing to take any risk? Gideon was crazy enough to do anything possible to try and solve a case, after all.

  8. This is very true. Great point. Yeah, he'd likely have found some sort of trap or trick to make the guy think he was going after him, while he safely hid away somewhere.
I dunno. I'd blame it on his age getting to him and slowing his thinking (don't know how old Gideon would be at this point, but he'd be getting up there in years, for sure), but that wouldn't explain him being smart enough to figure out how to draw this guy out. Depression? Suicide by unsub? I honestly don't know.

  9. Agreed. Gideon was pretty crazy. But I felt that if you purposely put yourself out there to draw him to you, you take precautions to not make it so dang easy for him to kill you, especially when you are ultra crafty, not ultra stupid . With his experience he would have to be nuts to leave himself so exposed as to walk around in a lit room visible through an unshuttered window.

  10. Out of the blue we get an end to the legend of Gideon - I was very surprised they did it and at how well it was done. Very sad throughout. But it made no sense that an unsophisticated dumb creep like that was able to take out Gideon, who had taken on and beaten much stronger adversaries.

  11. Agreed. Considering the way Mandy talked about the show when he left and after he left, it would've been so easy for the writers to retaliate with some nasty setup for him at any point over the years since then.
But just as I really appreciate that they let his character leave the show in a dignified, graceful manner back in 2007, I also admire them for giving him a sweet, moving, touching send-off here, too. Whatever issues the show might have with the actor, they didn't let that carry over to the portrayal of the character, and they kept in mind the good connections he had with the rest of the team, and showed just how much of an impact he had on their lives. So good on the show. I really respect them for that.
Also, I'd be all for Kirsten doing some more episode writing. She did a really nice job tonight.

  12. Agreed.
And I wouldn't worry too much about him relapsing. If he hasn't done it despite all the other stuff he went through over the years (he came close after everything with Emily, but never followed through), then I think he'll be able to work through this. It was comforting to see him just dive right into the case and work with Rossi and the rest of the team, a way of allowing him to start working through his grief.
I really do feel for the poor guy, though. He seriously needs a break. That scene with him crying at the morgue...I just wanted to give him the biggest hug.

  13. Angela, I couldn't agree more about the way they wrote him off in 2007. The episode where Reid finds the letter still makes me cry whenever I catch the rerun. And you hit the nail on the head about how even though Mandy said what he did after he left CM didn't stoop down to a childish level and so the character dishonor in anyway. And I also feel that they should let Kirsten write more too because she hit it out of the park with Nelson's Sparrow.

  14. Glad to be in agreement :). Yeah, I liked the idea of him going off to try and find his happiness, get his head on straight again. It was fitting for him, after all he'd been through. That end scene with Reid finding the letter is very emotional.
If I recall rightly, I'd heard Mandy had no bad things to say about his castmates back then or in the years following. He just took issue with the nature of the show itself. So I think that probably helped, if he still held fond thoughts of the people he worked alongside. And since one of those former coworkers wrote tonight's episode, well...
Yeah. It's fun to see the cast showing off their talents beyond their acting abilities-directing, writing, drawing (in the case of Gubler especially)-helps add an extra touch of enjoyment to the show.

  15. Yes, I also recall that his bad feelings were toward the content of the show and not the cast. Just curious, when you were watching that opening scene and you saw them put the sheet over Gideon and then the camera panned over toward his gun on the ground did you think he killed himself?

  16. I would hate for Reid to have a relapse because of this. But Gideon's death should have some effect on him in future episodes. Otherwise, it would seem like it never happened.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yep. Absolutely. Either that or he had a heart attack (before they showed the gun, that is).

Then they said he was murdered and I was like: *Record scratch* "...whaaaaaaaaaaat?!"

  18. This was such an amazing episode from start to finish. From what I read, Kirsten was the brains behind this whole story but Erica Messier did help her out. The beginning completely threw me for a loop..Reid in the car and walking into the cabin I was like, wtf? I mean the previews didn't spoil anything about Gideon being murdered. There was so much emotion and for Gideon's character being written off in such a tragic but beautifully thoughtful way is amazing considering Mandy

Patinkin completely dissed CM after he left. This episode definitely proves that CM still has it and the casting of Ben Savage was beyond brilliant.

  19. The kicker for me was the chess board and Reid lingering by it at the end of the episode and when he recited part of Gideon's letter.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I honestly thought he was going to say something while at that chess board, like, "Checkmate" or something, as a nod to all the times Gideon said that to him. But just having him quietly stand there was quite poignant in and of itself.

Loved him reciting part of that letter. And when he hugged Gideon's son...yeah, that whole ending scene had me grabbing a handful of Kleenex and crying my eyes out.

  21. Girl, I went through a box of Kleenex ;(

  22. That beginning was exceptional because, as you said, the previews gave nothing away. Agreed that it was smart casting of Ben Savage. And though Patinkin did not deserve such a tributary sendoff, the show rose above that and gave the character a fitting goodbye.

  23. At the diner they described Gideon as a guy in his sixties to the waitress. Maybe we are supposed to think he had been in in depression since the sickening murder of his girlfriend by the serial killer that the team was chasing which caused him to resign from the team. ( In actuality Mandy P. just had another of his infamous snits of artistic temper and abruptly left the show - the second show on which he had done that disappearing act out of the blue. Notorious cranky pants. ) Anyway, in spite of his being dispatched so easily by a not very bright unsub making no sense, I thought the episode was well done and had some very good moments. The actor may not have deserved such a good sendoff but the character and what he meant to the team was nicely portrayed.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agreed. I get the feeling he wasn't totally acting there-that reaction seemed quite genuine to me.

  25. In my opinion, that was the saddest scene. MGG can sure turn on the tears. It was heartbreaking.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I honestly wondered for a moment if they'd go that route. On the one hand, I too would've liked to see that happen-after having lost so many people he cares about, you've just gotta think there's a part of him that wants to finally fight back and actively take down someone who took away a person close to him. And it'd certainly make for an interesting aspect to his grief, and how he deals with it, from here on out, too.

But on the other hand, thinking back to Gideon and Reid's discussion after he killed Dowd all those years ago, and Reid's guilt over killing someone...maybe for his own sanity's/sense of justice's sake it's better he didn't do that.
