Not bad. This show will never win any awards but I'd rather watch this than most of the long-running procedurals that just won't seem to die like they should.
A couple of things though: 1. The end scene in the doctor's office was unnecessary. Let's call it Backstrom overkill. 2. I normally like Kristoffer Polaha's characters but I think I hate Niedermayer as much as Backstrom does. And... 3. It's really weird seeing Dennis Haysbert playing second banana to anyone.
Ah, that explains your "OMG this is the worst pilot I've seen. I scratched my eyes out." post. I never said his racism is funny. My point was that I enjoy shows with some less than likeable characters who are very flawed- The mentalist. Elementary. Game of thrones. Hell, I love Chicago PD and I pretty much hate every character on that show. If you don't like it, don't watch. Plenty of other stuff on TV.
The comedy missed for me too. Same when I first saw the mentalist. I just don't like cop/crime related humor. But just like with the mentalist, the main character is an immature jerk who I love to hate and want to see grow and mature. Same with Gotham. I find Gordon to be incredibly boring, but love watching Bullock.
I think the difference in Chicago PD and Backstrom is while both characters could be seen as having unlikeable qualities, we know early on that Voight does it because he wants to solve the cases and he loves the city of Chicago. It's the only way he know how to get the job done and he's very effective at it. With Backstrom, he's unlikeable and offensive just to be unlikeable and offensive. Combine that with the fact that he's not particularly great at his job or cares for it and it becomes a mess in a hurry.
We all have different tastes, but I think that Backstrom really did themselves a disservice in picking a character that is unlikeable for no particular reason at all.
I liked it and will keep watching. Are the eps really going to be out of order?? Fox is known for this and is what messed up Firefly. At least is was not silly with adult men acting like teens.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Seriously it was really horrid, what is Fox and Hart Hanson thinking? Is Fox really this desperate.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like it at all. It won't go on the DVR.

The main character is unlikable and I stopped watching it after the first part. #ByeFelicia to #BackStrom
ReplyDeleteThat's the fun of it. Not every show has to have a very likeable Gary Stu type lead.
ReplyDeleteHas it occurred to you that the Fox people liked it and that's why they picked it up? Not everyone dislikes/likes the same things you do.
ReplyDeleteYou must not watch the CW very often, although those pilots can be considered last year's pilots, I suppose.
ReplyDeleteGood point, Hank Voight (the main character) from Chicago PD is not very likable either.
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything funny about racist jokes etc.

ReplyDeleteFor me, the main problem was that they tried way to hard to make the show funny and it didn't work for me.
ReplyDeleteOf all the pilots I've watched for this season, this was definitely the worst.

ReplyDeleteHe solved the case so I think he was great at his job.
ReplyDeletefirst half of the season yes, they have not announced later half.
ReplyDeleteActually loved it. I will bet that young kid that lives with him is his son. I lol Quite a few times I will continue to watch.
ReplyDeleteIt was extremely boring
