Person of Interest - Control-Alt-Delete - Advance Preview
Jan 13, 2015
BA Person of Interest ReviewsCBS isn’t making fans wait too long for the next Person of Interest, with ‘Control-Alt-Delete’ airing this Tuesday. Luckily, I got to see the episode early and am here with a preview to quench your thirst (because after that last episode, a week really is a long time).
The relatively ambiguous ending to ‘If-Then-Else’ (remember, if you don’t see someone die on tv, they aren’t necessarily dead) left fans with one question. Is Shaw actually dead? Well, I can tell you that this episode reveals that [REDACTED].
Well, unfortunately for you all it looks like the Machine redacted that information. However, what I can tell you is that Team Machine are determined to believe that Shaw is not dead, and that if they look hard enough in all the right places, they’ll find her. That is the one and only objective of the team in this episode, and they’re willing to go to great lengths to find her.
‘Control-Alt-Delete’ isn’t all about Team Machine though. As the title suggests, Control returns and plays a major role within the episode. In fact, the first half of the episode feels rather out of place, because Team Machine are scarcely mentioned. Most of Control’s storyline is related to the relevant numbers and Samaritan, and in that sense, ‘Control-Alt-Delete’ feels a little like ‘Relevance’, and I feel it works really well.
Camryn Manheim is really enjoyable to watch as Control, and she gets some really strong development. In addition, there is a Finch scene that is very interesting in terms of his character development, in which Michael Emerson is, as always, fantastic. Reese is, once again, a broken man, while Root is clearly highly emotional and angry. Imagine Root as Reese from ‘The Devil’s Share’, just with a little less tall, dark and stormy and more psychopath. Caviezel and Acker especially are excellent in their roles.
Oakes Fegley’s Gabriel returns in an intriguing way. I wouldn’t say his scenes are quite as strong as the conversation from ‘The Cold War’, but he is still great to watch. For such a young actor, he really is knocking it out of the park.
There isn’t really all that much else I can describe without giving too much away. While it doesn’t match ‘If-Then-Else’ in quality, it is a sublime episode – I’d probably consider it at ‘God Mode’ quality.
Some dialogue teasers (feel free to have a guess at who said them in the comments and I’ll add correct ones in nearer the episode):
“You don’t ask me why.”
“Sorry, were you talking to me?”
“You don’t understand.”
“Ah, memories.”
“We gave you a marvellous car. Surely you didn’t think I’d let you drive it yourselves?”
“That’s on you.”
“We need to do this off the grid.”
“Just look at your computer, Mike.”
“Nothing would please me more.”
“I’m sorry you feel that way.”
“All that violence”
“Stop it. Now.”
I’ll leave you with one final general teaser. Once again, Person of Interest finds a magnificent (instrumental) track to close out an episode. ‘Control-Alt-Delete’ airs on Tuesday 13th January at 10pm on CBS, and you really don’t want to miss this one.

Thanks for the advance preview. Sounds extremely intriguing! I loved Relevance so I'm really looking forward to this one. God Mode quality sounds great, too! I'm wondering what song will be featured at this episode's end - they have a pretty good taste in music.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing bugging me? It's not Tuesday yet. :/
Can't wait to see damanged Root - Amy Acker performed unbelievably well in 4x11, I'm still not over final scene in that episode.
Oops, I deleted my comment. Well, not quite, but now it says "Guest".
ReplyDeleteOops, lol. Oh well. Acker's emotion is really clear to see, and it's played brilliantly. Keeps up her great work from the last ep.
ReplyDeleteI was initially worried about reading spoilers, but this article was very well written. Thanks, Bradley.

Awesome. I wasn't expecting another top-tier episode after one of the series' best, but I'll take an episode of God Mode-like quality any day.
This is the last episode until February, right? I think the show took a break during the last week of January in 2014, and I know it's going to be on hiatus for January 20th as the State of the Union speech will be broadcast on that night. It kind of stinks to have to wait three weeks yet again after just episodes post-holiday/post-New Year's.
Thanks for the preview! I really enjoyed the episode, I thought it was a nice follow up to the previous one. I especially enjoyed seeing a lot of Control, since the show hasn't explored her as much as they have with other "enemies" such as Greer it was really enjoyable to finally have a near Control centric episode.
ReplyDeleteThanks very much.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe this is the last episode until February. But you could always rewatch the trilogy several times over (which I may do)
Cheers Rob. Yeah, Control needed development and she finally got it, and it was great to see.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, very, very jealous of all those who got to see it already.
ReplyDeleteSecond - not reading the advance preview at all. Want to go in blind, to experience in full, the awesomeness that is surely about to come.
Finally - why is Tuesday taking so long to come?
Blu-rays of the first three seasons and school work shall keep me busy. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I loved this episode. I was amazed at how different it was compared to typical episodes despite what happened last week. Michael Emerson absolutely owned his scenes and the way his character is used shows Finch in a new light. It's a very special hour. You guys are going to love it!
ReplyDeleteSo we don't actually know for certain what happened with Shaw?
ReplyDeleteEverything nice ... I can not wait to see this episode but also .... Please leave a door open for the return of Shaw ...
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to wait and see ;)
ReplyDeleteOn a scale of 1 to 10, how good is the episode in terms of setting up the second half of the season (or are any hints dropped about it at all)?
ReplyDeleteThere's a couple of hints where Team Machine and Control's story may go, but nothing really in terms of setting up the final 10 as a whole, I wouldn't say.
ReplyDeleteOnly meant about a general direction, like last year's 12th episode kickstarted Decima's attempts to bring Samaritan online. But if they're looking to space things out, that's fine.
ReplyDeleteBut on a scale of 1-10 in general, how much would you & Jimmy (who's also seen it), rate it?
Yeah. I think I know where they're gonna take the season from here, but there are no definitive hints that say that is the route they'll take.
ReplyDeleteI'd give it a 9.5. As I say in the preview, I'd put it level with 'God Mode' in terms of quality.
Neat, thanks! Cool that they're leaving it ambiguous.
ReplyDeleteThe cinematography in the trailer looked... much darker in tone. Reminded me of The Devil's Share.
The second half of the episode has a reasonably dark tone to it. Not so much with the first half.
ReplyDeleteI see. Guess I could wait for another 3.5 days...
ReplyDeleteSarah Shahi said in an interview that if Shaw returns she will not be the Shaw we knew. Is it explained in the episode what she meant by that?
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to wait and see ;)
ReplyDelete[REDACTED]!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait.
ReplyDeleteSoooooooooo lucky to of already seen it
ReplyDeleteThanks for the preview. It sounds exciting, can't wait!! Wonder why it's redacted though; I'm guessing it does leave the door open for Sarah to return after her pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteRoot and Reese are my favourite characters, so I never liked her calling him "Lurch", "monkey helper", "big lug" and so on, as I never liked him treating her with coldness and disdain, as he always said that everybody deserves a second chance.
ReplyDeleteSo I am asking you, now that they have to team up in search of Shaw, are they, in this episode, coming to friendlier terms?
Thanks
Yep, they are on better terms in the episode.

ReplyDeleteNot sure why Michael Gaston wasn't credited in the press release.
ReplyDeleteDo they directly reveal if Shaw is alive or indirectly?
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteI did thanks :) It was an excellent episode.
ReplyDeleteYou folks continue to give me confidence. This thing blows, it's on all of you!
ReplyDeleteJK, I'm not one of those (sock puppet) trolls from the "What did you think of Person of Interest's Wingman" page. :D
Ha :)
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you that ;)
ReplyDeleteIs Fusco in the episode? I have not seen him in the promos and I wonder what role he will have in this episode.
ReplyDeletewill it be answered at the final of the episode.
ReplyDeleteThe promotional photos have him. So, yes.
ReplyDeleteYep, he is in the episode.
ReplyDeleteYou have to wait to find out ;)
