New Girl - Review - "Coming Out"
New Girl last night was a by-the-books episode featuring some funny moments (Schmidt swaddling), but overall, it didn't have much character development or standout moments that have been spread throughout this season. Let's dive into tonight's episode, "Coming Out." The main arc of the episode focused on Jess, Ryan, Coach, and the school faculty bickering over field trip proposals and Jess's fallout from telling the faculty Ryan and her were dating. It was great to see Coach step up as a friend and search "The Hall of Documents" to find a loophole for Jess to date Ryan at school, but the immediate backlash of Jess choosing Ryan's awesome field trip proposal ("Mission to Mars") was inevitable. Jess eventually caved and settled for looking at follage* (foliage), according to the biology teacher. "You're putting on a real creepy, murdery vibe today." Poor Coach, sometimes you swing and miss. It turns out the foliage trip was just Lorenzo, the biology teacher's way of having the kids do yard work. In addition, they happened to stir a wasp's nest adding more insult to injury.
"You'd be like, in the conference room, meeting adjourned...except for you Sheila." Coach and Cece end up having a discussion with Jess that she doesn't need to be liked at work, she just needs to be listened to and respected. A quick lesson to the work environment is that your coworkers may be your friends, but the job and business always come first and you won't always be cared for or considered safe at a job if lay-offs are coming. All you can do is your best job and worry about the little things later. Jess admits that her relationship may have compromised her job, but she explains that she loves her job and will listen to the faculty while making decisions that may upset them. Also, she told Ryan she loved him! I thought it was sweet and sincere; it didn't feel forced and Ryan's reaction with "I love you, too" was perfect.
Meanwhile, Schmidt was doubling over in pain from an ulcer leading to an intervention from Nick and Kai swaddling Schmidt to keep him from leaving the loft. Schmidt wanted the red potatoes account at his new job, just like his previous sponge account. I thought the bathroom scenario with the Word Processor was a nice touch, along with Nick and Schmidt discussing their issues with one another. Schmidt accused Nick of not doing anything with his life that is worth doing while Nick accused Schmidt of caving to corporate life and losing a part of his humanity from college. By the end of the episode, both Nick and Schmidt had epiphanies that neither of them want to be a slave to corporate America or worry about what is going to happen in the future; they just want to work together and be friends again.
Finally, poor Winston and Cece. Winston was delegated third-string this episode featuring a crystal necklace the other patrol officers in the LAPD gave to him as an act of hazing. Little did they know Winston would use this to his advantage to hit on women at the bar. I'm pretty sure we only saw Cece for that one minute recap for Jess to compose herself at the bar. Overall, a decent episode that just felt like filler besides Jess's declaration of love for Ryan. I hope next week can balance all of the characters while offering up some funny moments that don't rely on low bro comedy like bee stings. Until then, comment below and check out an all-new New Girl next week at 9PM on Fox.
