MOVIES: Suicide Squad - Tom Hardy Exits; Jake Gyllenhaal Eyed to Replace

Tom Hardy has dropped out of Suicide Squad, Warner Bros.’s all-star comic book movie being directed by David Ayer.

Hardy was to have played Rick Flagg, the leader of the group that consisted of Batman villains Deadshot (Smith), Joker (Leto), and Harley Quinn (Harley Quinn), plus Boomerang (Courtney) and Enchantress (Delevigne).

Reasons for Hardy’s exit weren’t immediately known although scheduling could be a factor, according to sources. The actor is currently shooting The Revenant, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s frontier drama that also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, and that shoot is now looking to go longer than initially planned.

Jake Gyllenhaal may not have received an Oscar nomination for “Nightcrawler” on Thursday but he could still end the day with a win, as David Ayer is courting his “End of Watch” star to replace Tom Hardy as Rick Flag in “Suicide Squad,” an individual familiar with the comic book project has told TheWrap.

Warner Bros. had no comment, while a representative for Gyllenhaal didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hardy was forced to exit the project because Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “The Revenant” is going over schedule into mid-March, after which Hardy will be needed to promote WB’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

  1. Please no Jack! He isn't cut out for the role, at least not in my opinion. Someone more masculine!

  2. I hate this. I am not a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal. I hope they look elsewhere but I'm not going to be excited about anybody now that Tom is leaving.

  3. Sad we'll be losing Tom but Jake is a pretty damn good replacement, especially after seeing Nightcrawler. I'm all for this and I'm sure he'll do great as Rick Flag. Hopefully this will become official soon.

  4. Someone more masculine? Ummm, Chris Pratt and Paul Rudd weren't exactly masculine before they became superheroes and look what happened.

  5. I agree, I think he's a masculine enough, he can act and he's well known. I just don't care for him personally and my heart was set on Tom Hardy anyway.

  6. Jake Gyllenhaal is an amazing actor and he's a really good replacement.

  7. I wanted Jake to join Marvel, I need a on screen Zodiac reunion!

  8. Me too (Tom is obviously the better choice here) but the article says that he's also working on another movie and can't do Suicide Squad at the moment.

  9. Paul Rudd I can give you, but Chris Pratt was masculine before just ripped his body recently. He was quite handsome in Everwood.
That is just my personal perception of him, he could surprise me but my first reaction to hearing this is Please No!

  10. I am excited for The Revenant but I really wanted Tom to be a part of this. It's ok, I know Jake will do a great job.

  11. Odd i'd actually be okay with that choice. Still not a fan of the cast anyway, Will Smith hasn't delivered a performance I enjoyed ever since MIB2, Jai Courtney ruined every movie I've seen him in (no seriously, if Bruce Willis and Aaron Eckhart outact you in a movie that is STILL written like crap you got to rething your career man) and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex....need I say more?

Leto as the Joker is the only casting decision I'm actually fine with. Gyllenhaal is a fine actor, so that'd be a good choice in my book

I'm still waiting for the announcement that Jaden and Willow Smith are cast in some major role

  12. Those twerps can't get close to this movie! I hope you jinxed them with this statement.
Please no. I look so much forward to these DC movies coming up and they can't ruin it for me. I even consider going to the cinema and watch it.

  13. I'm relieved. I'm not a Tom Hardy fan, and I'll take anyone but him. I've surprisingly never seen a movie with Jake Gyllenhaal, so I have no expectations.

  14. Oh what, I really wanted to see Tom Hardy in this kind of Movie and especially as Rick Flagg...

  15. If their dad's in it he'll manage to shoehorn them in somehow. Especially in a franchise so filled with characters.

Have you seen After Earth? Truly attrocious, I went in ignoring all the hollywood nepotism complaints and oh boy...suddenly all the complaints made sense.

  16. Could see them appear in a movie soon, but they should skip this movie. I heard it's going to be terrible. ;-)

Didn't watch After Earth, I intended to but really couldn't force me to. I didn't even watch Karate Kid, even though I'm a fan of the franchise and Jackie Chan but the kid is a complete turn off. He is so so bland.

  17. Jake Gyllenhaal's a superb actor -- one of the best working today. However, I really don't want him in Suicide Squad. His acting style just doesn't mesh with the superhero-type tone. His performances are always lousy when he's in a role beneath him. Plus, being a part of DC canon would probably block him off from pursuing other projects. I can't see Gyllenhaal even musing accepting this offer.

  18. Harley Quinn is portrayed by Harley Quinn, uhu. Jake's latest performance in Nightcrawler was most definitely one of his best performances ever, so I'm okay with him replacing Tom Hardy, even though I was also looking forward to that.

  19. Meh.. I preferred Hardy for this role.

  20. Ehh, I like Jake so I don't mind. We'll see how it goes.
