Thanks to Alex S for the heads up
NBC is giving "Grimm" an earlier bedtime.
Network sources have confirmed to the site the series will go on a month-long hiatus following its February 13 episode before returning for the back half of its 22-episode season on Friday, March 20 at the earlier time of 8:00/7:00c.
Filling the void on those Fridays will be an encore of the "Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special" on February 20 while the new season of "The Night Shift" will get weekly rebroadcasts in the Friday, 8:00/7:00c hour for its first three weeks back (February 27 through March 13).
The network's mainstay "Dateline NBC" will also expand to two hours beginning February 27.

Is this good or bad?
ReplyDeleteIs that official, I don't see any other sources.
ReplyDeleteI hope this move doesn't hurt the show.
ReplyDeleteThis is a little risky
ReplyDeleteEchoing others, is this good or bad? I am concerned because Constantine fell even further when they shifted it to 8.
ReplyDeleteIt's better than 10 I think, which would be the other option (since there's 2 hours of Dateline).
ReplyDeleteI wish they would've left it at 9PM, either way I think a fifth season is guaranteed.
ReplyDeleteIt changes nothing for me and show is in rather safe position, so I'm not going to debate about ratings change two months ahead.
ReplyDeleteI'm more concerned about the month long hiatus to be honest. Ratings always drop off after late March.
ReplyDeleteI don't see any other sources reporting it, so until I see NBC report it I think its just a rumor.
ReplyDeleteWhen does the hiatus start?
ReplyDeleteread the article
ReplyDeleteOuch, NBC has nothing. When's the SNL special airing?
ReplyDeleteim guessing they have already taken that into account.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing that now that Grimm is in syndication on TNT it doesn't matter.
ReplyDeleteThis smells like cancellation scheduling to me.
ReplyDeleteI hope NBC at least has the decency to give Grimm a final season.
Silly me. I've just whipped through it and skipped the most important part.
ReplyDeleteFeb. 13 so in the middle of sweeps.
ReplyDeleteThe only show that could really benefit from this is The Messengers. So I'm all in! ^_^
ReplyDeleteim guessing they're already aken into account this problem
ReplyDeleteThis smells like a tryout for next season.
ReplyDeleteFebruary 15th at 8pm.
ReplyDeleteWow. That makes no sense especially since it's after DST. Why not run Dateline from 8-10 and put Grimm at 10? Why have Dateline Part 2 overlap with 20/20. Oh, NBC crazy.
ReplyDeleteMost likely.
ReplyDeleteNext season 2 hours of Dateline OJ fridays could be a permanent fixture.
Grimm is safe plus it's on syndacation.
ReplyDeleteI really think 7:00 is too early if the little kids are still up. They'll be scared by the Wesen. I guess parents will just have to DVD it.
ReplyDeleteThat was my take also. Grimm is doing terrible in syndication on TNT, so NBC is cutting its loses now, instead of later. There isn't any benefit to keep it going as TNT is going to do a write off. It's no different than when NBC moved Constantine to Fridays, they are quietly completing the order and looking to the future.
ReplyDeleteThe scheduling move signifies that NBC is moving on from genre Friday and that they feel two hours of Dateline would do better than anything genre that they could schedule on that night.
I've mentioned it before, but Law and Order: SVU is likely the next candidate to end up on Friday to fill a Friday timeslot. Unlike Grimm, it is doing well in syndication, so it can support a Friday move.
If I'm predicting a schedule from this move, I think two hours of Dateline and Law and Order: SVU on Fridays. Maybe midseason a third crime oriented drama will join them.
ReplyDeleteOverall it looks like NBC has given up on Fridays.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that 2hrs of Dateline will get better ratings from 9-11pm than anything scripted NBC could try there.
Do you think it would be Dateline 8-10pm, and then SVU at 10pm?
ReplyDeleteI think that in the future, NBC would hope that some sort of procedural or crime block could take shape, influenced by Dateline. By in the fall, I think that they will focus on Wednesday and Thursday and really get that cemented.
ReplyDeleteI think that is exactly what NBC will do. NBC is using the 8 PM hour to complete the orders for the genre block. In the summer, Hannibal will likely fill 10 PM while Dateline airs 8 to 10 PM. And in the fall, Law and Order: SVU will take over the 10 PM timeslot.
ReplyDeletewhy the hell are the times backwards? you don't go from 8 to 7 pm you go from 7 to 8pm.
ReplyDeleteThe overall situation for the show is bleak. The only way I can see it getting a full season renewal is if SVU's negotiations fall apart. At a minimum I hope that the show can receive a short final season though.
ReplyDeleteAs far as everything else, NBC's recent moves and announcements have made it even more difficult to guess what to expect for next season.
I do find it interesting that NBC will be repeating the Night Shift Friday at 8pm. NBC definitely wants to make the show work by giving it as much exposure as possible.
Same here. Plus it just had a month-long hiatus. I hate when shows do this.
ReplyDelete8/7 C doesn't mean when it begins and ends. It's talking about east vs midwest time periods. Grimm airs at 8 pm on the east coast, which means that it is on at 7 pm in the Midwest because of the time zone change.
ReplyDeleteToo many long breaks do tend to kill shows. Grimm is safe for next year, but the scheduling isn't doing it any favors.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I'd be surprised if it didn't get a full season 5. Grimm's ratings aren't great but it is still performing better than most of the scripted NBC shows
ReplyDeleteIt is confusing if you're not used to it. I remember the first time someone put the date before the month here and I was just baffled. Plus time zones are confusing enough in their own right. This site is housed in the UK and trying to figure out when to schedule an article has been driving me nuts. I keep forgetting to change the date because it is the wee hours of the morning for you guys, so I'm continually scheduling posts for times that have already passed.
ReplyDeleteah. thanks for the clarity. i know the US does dates with month, date then year as opposed to date, month and year so it looked like you guys want to do everything backwards. glad to be wrong. it was driving me crazy lol.
ReplyDeleteAs a note to all the doomsayers out there: Just because Grimm is moving to an earlier timeslot after a hiatus it doesn't necessarily spell a cancellation. If anything it looks more likely that Constantine is the show facing cancellation. Considering that Grimm is still NBC's top performer for Friday nights it doesn't really make sense to move it to an earlier timeslot but maybe it can still benefit from the move. Although I don't really like this news, I still believe that Grimm has a good chance of renewal, especially after reaching syndication.
ReplyDeleteIt's not as bad as one might think but it still doesn't sound like a tremendous vote of confidence in the show. What this is saying is that NBC considers this a placeholder show. It doesn't believe it can do well at 10pm or well enough so its going to place it at 8pm in order to make room for a full 2 hour Dateline which NBC believes can do better in a 2 hour slot. The hiatus is the key here because its NBC deciding to take a long hard look at its development pipeline and looking to see if anything shines brighter than Grimm. Ultimately I think Grimm will be OK but it only takes it sliding just a little bit with pilot show popping just enough for NBC to decide if a new show might do better with a 2 hour Dateline instead of Grimm. Constantine is a goner. There's not much more to be said there, and the fact that Grimm is in syndication doesn't work for it: it works against it. It's already marketable in syndication 'as is'. NBC can shut it down and still sell it. No, these are delicate times for the show. Fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteyou know , it think viewers get angry, when film breaks 1 mount in Jan, we were around watching Grimm 20 ,after Jan we become 6 and now i think it is getting less.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great analysis to help explain to confused fans why Grimm moved and why syndication isn't advantageous at this point. Dateline should perform 0.2 to 0.5 demos better airing in a higher watched timeslot than the latest ratings of Grimm at a fraction of the production cost. The reality is that it they go with a 2 hour Dateline, it makes more sense to find something that will match Dateline better in both tone and ratings. Constantine and Grimm are not that show. NBC made the decision to shift their Fridays away from genre after Constantine's performance and Grimm not doing well in syndication.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually a very logical decision that NBC made. NBC needs something needs to fill in 8 PM after Constantine wraps up and NBC believes that two hours of Dateline will earn higher viewership, and thus ad rates, than two hours of Grimm. Considering that Dateline regularly performs better than Grimm in the demos at 8 PM and 10 PM, it should do better on a generally higher watched hour. This move is a vote of confidence for Dateline more than Grimm. Grimm is at 8 PM because since they have the episodes ordered, the might as well air them somewhere. Then they can fill that third hour with something else in the fall with the two hours of Dateline already cemented on schedule.
ReplyDeleteI'm more inclined to think of this move as good. Grimm's second half of its third season had 2 breaks from January to May with only 4 consecutive weeks of new episodes airing in between.
ReplyDeleteAt least with this move this season, we may be getting a continues 7 week run all the way to May 1st, unless NBC decides to skip a week in mid/late April.
