Glee, “The Hurt Locker, Part 2” was also written by Ian Brennan who wrote Part 1. However, this episode was directed by Barbara Brown. This is Brown’s first time directing though she has been script supervisor on the show since the “Pilot.” She does a fantastic job, and you’d never suspect this was her first time! In fact, I enjoyed the second half of this episode much more than I did the first half.
The episode picks up right where we left off – the end of Vocal Adrenaline’s terrific performance. Of course, Sue (Jane Lynch) has some surprises for the show choirs, including changing the rules. There’s a terrific scene in which we see Walter (Harry Hamlin) get the best of Sue. I actually liked Walter a lot better the second time around too.
The episode contains another terrific Game of Thrones reference. There’s also a super-creepy Saw sequence. It’s both creepy and hilarious. The New Directions get a secret weapon, and they gain two more members – leaving them just six shy of the 12 they need to actually compete. Rachel also makes a promise to someone that she may not be able to keep. The Invitational is definitely going to have some fallout for a few people.
We get to see the Warblers and New Directions perform. The Warblers nail both their songs. Once again, both their songs are personal favorites of mine. The Warblers also have a fantastic routine – as they always do! I wasn’t nearly as sold on the New Directions songs. Noah Guthrie is going to be a breakout star from this show – I loved his song!
I’ll leave you with two quotes from the episode – but no context or who says them.
“A good nemesis only makes you better.”
“What we accomplished in this week makes it feel like two weeks!”
