Eye Candy premieres Monday, Jan. 12 on MTV at 10/9 C.
Jumping right into the action, Eye Candy starts with a kidnapping and doesn't let up the pace. Don't let the silly name or network keep you from checking it out. It breezes through the overabundance of exposition that sinks most pilots to establish the mood and intensity of the show right away. They aren't worried about telling viewers everything but aim to hook them with suspense and thrills, letting back story slide into short segments that drive the story instead of hindering it. In other words, it's my kind of show so far. Since MTV graciously posted the first 20 minutes as a preview, you can check it out here and determine if it's your kind of show too. The pilot is definitely what you see is what you get although the last 20 minutes are significantly creepier and ends on one heck of a twist. (Hint: Don't go to IMDb or you will spoil yourself like I did.) If you like the preview, chances are you'll enjoy the rest of the show. In many ways Eye Candy reminds me of Teen Wolf in a good way. They are both on MTV and saddled with unfortunate names. They are also both better than I ever expected them to be. It also helps that Eye Candy's show runner, Christian Taylor, used to be a producer on Teen Wolf. While the Eye Candy pilot didn't command my attention instantly like Teen Wolf did, it has an equal amount of action and is a strong start. I strongly urge you not to judge the show by the network. If you are into plot-driven mysteries that creep you out and raise the stakes, Eye Candy is worth trying.
Loosely based on a novel by R. L. Stine, Eye Candy revolves around Lindy, a hacker extraordinaire, who three years earlier watched as her younger sister was kidnapped from a fast food joint. Ever since then she's been on a crusade to find Sara through any means necessary, a crusade that lands her on probation for 6 months with an ankle monitor. Her ex-boyfriend Ben, an undercover cop, put her there so he volunteers to be the one to remove it after her probation period is up to Lindy's annoyance. While he tries to get her back, Lindy's best friend Sophia creates a profile for her on an online dating site called Flirtual to get her over Ben and celebrate her newfound freedom. Lindy however is not fond of either plan as she's trying to help the mother of another missing woman, who is later found dead. In the end Sophia wins by threatening to raise Lindy's rent if she doesn't go out and have fun. What Lindy gets is 3 dates and a tech-savvy stalker driven to make her life a living hell in pursuit of a perfect match. From threatening texts to using her own web camera against her, Lindy's stalker pursues her from the shadows. But this time he picked the wrong victim because Lindy is determined to fight back no matter the consequences.
Why You Should Watch -
1. The pacing - I can't stress enough how quickly this plot moves. The kidnapping takes place in 4 minutes, the first murder is done in less than eight, and the stalker contacts Lindy before the halfway mark. In fact, the ending would not be amiss in a season finale. MTV dramas get pacing in an ADHD world.
2. The twists - If I hadn't already spoiled myself, I would not have seen 1 thing coming and I was pleasantly surprised by another.
3. The thrills - If you like creepy, this show is for you. It has the same vibe as Stalker but with bigger consequences.
4. Lindy - While the show is definitely plot-driven, we learn enough about Lindy to be sympathetic to the character. Lindy is a tough, independent, no-nonsense crusader unrelenting in her quest to get answers for victims' families when the police cannot. She knows what it is like to live without knowing and instead of making her bitter, she's just that much more determined.
Issues -
1. Several of the actors are fairly new to the paid acting profession, which occasionally shows much in the same way that Stephen Amell struggled sometimes in season 1 of Arrow.
2. Because it is a plot-driven show and it's only the pilot, some of the characters feel a little flat right now, which is to be expected.
Grade: B
Audience - anyone who likes fast-paced, plot-driven shows
TV Formula: Eye Candy = Stalker - (the douchey main character, slow start, and case of the week) + Criminal Minds' atmosphere + Teen Wolf's pacing and terrible name + Sleepy Hollow's season 1 weekly cliffhangers
Best Reason to Watch - fast pace that doesn't get dragged down with much exposition for a pilot
Best Scene / Most Intense - Lindy watches her sister be taken
Best Twist - the ending
Best Life Tip - "Don't drink and date stalkers."
Best Character - Lindy, which is odd for me since I tend to like secondary characters best
Least Developed Character - Connor, who seems to only be there to snark at Lindy and look bored
Worst Person to Create a Nickname - Sophia chose Eye Candy as Lindy's username. Nothing more needs to be said.
Coolest Entrance - the way into the club
Best Quotes -
"I'm living my life and a man doesn't define it."
"The internet, God's gift to psychopaths."
"It'll take just one to show you the way."
"Too 'love me, stalk me, kill me'?" "Not helping."
"We are so doomed as a generation."
"What I'm about to show you is not exactly legal?" "Are you telling us so we won't be mad or so you won't go to jail?"
"You bail and I increase your rent as penalty for living with a depressingly melancholy roommate."
"You're with a stalker. You date stalkers now?" Eye Candy premieres Monday, Jan. 12 on MTV at 10/9 C.
Those who know me have already heard my Teen Wolf saga. How I avoided it even though it got recommended to me time and again because it had the misfortune of being on MTV and I am much too old for that network. Once I did watch it though, I was wowed. If you have never seen that pilot, you don't know what you're missing because it is one of the fastest moving pilots I have ever seen. This pilot is done in much the same vein. Things that would take many shows until midseason break happen in this pilot, making it exciting and never dull. It's not going to win any awards but it sure is a lot of fun so far. Try it out!
ReplyDeleteThe show looks like Stalker with bad acting.
ReplyDeleteIt is better paced than Stalker, for sure. It took me a long time to really get into Stalker and I almost dropped it a few times. Eye Candy is also more serialized, although they have a similar atmosphere and they both rely on some standard horror movie thrills. I do agree that Eye Candy's acting can be a little rough sometimes, but I put it on par with Amell's acting in the first season of Arrow.
ReplyDeleteMTV wanted this show to be their "CSI", and I just saw a tweet from the TCA that not every episode will be horror/killer themed....pretty sure the series is going to have some case of the week episodes.
ReplyDeleteThat is actually good news for me. Sometimes the serialization of things makes the main arc drawn out far too long. It is not at all like CSI though from what I've seen.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely watch this now! Great review! Also i really like Victoria justice
ReplyDeleteI honestly only know who Victoria Justice is because I used to teach middle school. I've never seen her in anything else. However I think she does a decent job here and the plotting is definitely swift enough to overcome some of the show's less stellar moments.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the review, I will be watching every single episode this season. I am so excited for the plot, the characters, the twists, as well as the Lindy and Jake relationship.
ReplyDeleteUh oh. I hope the plot stays as swiftly paced then. I can't vouch for the whole season. Just the pilot. I'm glad that you are excited about the show. I can't wait to see where it leads either.
ReplyDeleteGood to know.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Stalker, so I may check Eye Candy out.
I sometimes saw her on the nickelodeon show Victorious. So i know her from there. I Would Not have checked out this show if i had not read your review
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy Stalker too. It just took me a little while to really appreciate it. You're not going to get Maggie Q level acting but the main character is engaging and like I said, the pacing is super quick.
ReplyDeleteI've watched the first 2 episodes and I was just wondering... Don't you think it's gonna be another Pretty Little Liars and we'll "never" know who this killer is? I mean after the end of episode 2 I don't know what to think.
ReplyDeleteGreat preview!!
Let me know what you think of it. I'd love to hear your take.
ReplyDeleteI prefer serialized shows, but I would love to see someone break the formula with procedurals by solving the crime in two episodes instead of one. Think of something like Luther where they had a serialized character arc for the 4 episodes of season 3 but he solves a crime in the first two episodes and than a second crime in the last two episodes.
ReplyDeleteThe EP did not want to give that away in the yahootv preview that was linked here....
ReplyDeletehttp://www.spoilertv.com/2015/01/yahoo-tv-winter-preview-new-shows.html
Yes i will definitely let you know!
ReplyDeleteThey still haven't figured out that ************** is A on Pretty Little Liars? They must not be following the books then. :-P
ReplyDeleteI have high hopes that we will either learn who the stalker is or learn why the sister was kidnapped by the end of this season. Then have whichever one isn't solved by the end of the season 2. Althought the second episode was slower, I hope that they will let Teen Wolf be their guide and wrap up storylines pretty quickly so they can start new ones in the next season. Thee's no reason to not wrap it up now that the lead is more involved in the case.
For me it depends on the arc. If it moves pretty quickly and there is continuous development toward a resolution, then I tend to like them. If they are only there to draw out a story I usually pass. Sometimes it flip flops midseason. For instance, I did not care for the pilot of State of Affairs but I really liked the procedural elements of the next 2 cases. Now I am more into its serial elements as we are closing out the season. The Blacklist is another example of when I tend to like the case of the week more because it takes them forever to get anywhere on the characters arcs and storylines.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked the pilot! I can't wait to check this out - assuming MTV's streaming player doesn't still hate me like it did this summer for TW, I'll be watching the day after airing.
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the MTV player woes. Here's hoping they are fixed in time for you to join in the Teen Wolf conversation this summer. I have a feeling there will be a lot to talk about. No More Lacrosse!!!
ReplyDeleteI did like the pilot. It moved quickly and dumped most of the exposition to the second episode. That one is unfortunately a little slower, but I have high hopes that the third picks it up again.
Watch the preview. Go to IMDb. You'll know exactly what's going to happen at the end. One caveat though - I have not seen any spoilers for this show, nor did I follow any social media on it. Perhaps it will nto be as big a deal for those who have because they already expect it. I didn't.
ReplyDeleteI saw the preview when it was first posted and I read the plot summary on IMDb is that not the section you were talking about? Maye they changed it?
ReplyDeleteI feel like the answer will come in S2 the latest. If we don't get it by the end of S2, I will stop watching until they reveal it.
ReplyDeleteI am right there with you. That would be dragging it out too long.
ReplyDeleteLast year that player was killing me and I had to wait three weeks for it to post on Hulu! Can't do that again this year....if anything can tempt me to buy a TV so I can watch live, it'll be Teen Wolf :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the exposition is minimal in the pilot - second episode is fine but they really need that pilot to grab people's attention...between the name and the station it airs on, there is little room for dilly dally.
I have only seen the 20 min preview as well, but I am pretty sure what it is based on Dahne's hint. Do you really want to know?
ReplyDeleteSorry. I can't say anything else on here because I don't want to spoil anyone who doesn't know. Good news is you probably already know and won't think it's a big deal.
ReplyDeleteYes I do, because at this point I feel dense for not seeing it.
ReplyDeleteWell if you do, I'd love to have you join the live tweet. I am hoping the long break gave the writing staff time to recharge and come up with something awesome. I totally agree with pilots needing to grab people's attention quickly. There is just so much TV out there nowadays that if you don't get people interested in the first half hour, you may have lost them for good. All pilots need to make a splash.
ReplyDeleteE-mail me at dahne@spoilertv.com and I will tell you but this is not the place for spoilers.
ReplyDeleteYou can't say it here because this is the preview. MTV allowed me to see the screener but I don't think they would be very happy if we made things too public.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, based on your review...don't really want to read this article I want to watch cold...I will definitely watch. Still a little taken aback by the subject matter/RL Stine connection. But I am taking your recommendation to heart.
ReplyDeleteNice preview, Dahne.
ReplyDeleteIf I hadn't gotten screeners for this show, I probably never would have checked it out, but now that I have seen the first 2 episodes, I'm kinda hooked.
Ben dies in the pilot doesn't he because he looks like he's just a guest star right?
ReplyDeleteand i'm guessing a Pretty Little Liars too right?
ReplyDeleteso a season Big Bad instead of series?
ReplyDeletewhere's the twist in IMDb?
ReplyDeleteis the twist the same as in the book?
ReplyDeleteI'll give it a try but it doesn't get me. I even watched the first 20 minutes of the plot but I can't say I like it. Victoria Justice is good at acting I like her a lot but I don't know. I'll watch the first 3 eps and see...
ReplyDeletei thought they put Lacrosse back, yeah i mean The Assassins tried to kill Brett with the Lacrosse stick
ReplyDeleteI've just found out about this show thanks to your review. I will definitely watch the pilot and probably the rest of the season :)
ReplyDeleteThe RL Stine thing through me too. However once you got beyond his Gossebumps series, his young adult series had some good books in it. I'd say watch the preview. It will tell you right away whether this is going to be for you or not.
ReplyDeleteIt would make a lot of sense. I don't know if they will do that or not, but at the end of the second episode, they have positioned the main character perfectly so that they would not need to keep the serial killer past season 1 to keep her in an interesting position.
ReplyDeleteThey did and it was a mistake. I don't ever need another lacrosse game on TW again. Everything lacrosse sucked and dragged down the show last season.
ReplyDeleteI had planned to check it out just because I watch all pilots but I was surprised by how much I liked it too. The pacing and action and general atmosphere were far better than I hoped.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest if you didn't like the 20 minute preview, then you won't like the premiere. It pretty much continues in the same vein. You might want to skip it.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are giving it a try. Try the preview. If you like it, you'll like the first two episodes. If not, then it won't be for you.
ReplyDeleteyeah i wonder what goes through a writer's or creator's mind when they write statutory rape
ReplyDeletecool and where's the twist in imdb?
ReplyDeleteI will not post spoilers on this preview thread. However, feel free to e-mail me at dahne@spoilertv.com and I will answer you privately. I will not ruin things for another reader, especially when MTV was nice enough to let me see the screener.
ReplyDeleteIt's frustrating because the plotting of the book could have been so good but incest and pedophilia are instant dealbreakers for me.
ReplyDeletethere's incest in Liars?
ReplyDeleteno just tell me where to look or is that too much of a spoiler already?
ReplyDeletethanks
ReplyDeleteNo, it's just the other thing that makes me stop watching a show instantly.
ReplyDeleteI've said everything I am going to say on the spoiler front. No more hints here. The stalker's voice creeps me out too and yes there is murder in the pilot.
ReplyDeleteis the death and mayhem Teen Wolf level? LOL
ReplyDeleteah, so i'm guessing you don't watch GoT?
ReplyDeletethe whole e-mail thing is confusing with the HTTP thing i don't know what to put
ReplyDeleteWas not planning to watch this, but since I love TW and most of the things you recommend am going to give it a shot..programing my hopper as soon as I hit post. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review, I will definitely watch it. I loved fast paced shows.
ReplyDeleteI'm difinetely not an Ezria fan but calling them statutory rape is a bit harsh. Ezra never took advantage of her and they didn't have sex for a very long time. Again not liking them in any way calling what they have statutory rape is a slap in the face of the ones who have really been a victim of that.
ReplyDeleteIf Aria really is 15 when she makes out with Ezra for the first time and if they have sex together, it is statutory rape by legal definition. No one of his age has any right to be having sex with a minor for any reason. It is rape pure and simple, and all rape is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI stopped watching after the incest in the pilot.
ReplyDeletenice response
ReplyDeleteFirst of all she was not 15.
ReplyDeleteSecond every personewho was ever raped and who is aware of that PLL storyline would be majorly offended by this post and has every right to.
Rape is a terrible violent act to someone who cannpt defend themselves. Even remotely comparing the Ezria storyline to this terrible crimes is a vast humiliation to the people who have been te victims of real crimes of that sort. So I kindly ask you to please think about your choice of vocabulary.
You don't like it? Fine. You think it's wrong for someone to have a consent relationship with someone a few years younger? That is also fine with me. But please think about the words you are choosing when you are talking about this sensitive topic.
Statutory rape is an American legal term defined as "sexual activity in which at least one person is below the age required to legally consent to the behavior." The definition fits.
ReplyDeleteand this guy has actually done it twice on the show, so this guy needs the needle
ReplyDeleteI just watch the first episode! It was amazing! Thanks for your preview. If it wasn't for it I wouldn't even know about this show! Now it's time for second episode :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you checked it out and even more that you liked it. It was a surprise to me how quickly I got into the pilot and that's always a good sign in my book.
ReplyDeleteCan you tell me what is happening in the end of the book?
ReplyDeleteI never read the book. Sorry. I do know that the book and the TV show are only loosely connected though so they won't end the same.
ReplyDelete
