Next All-New BROOKLYN NINE-NINE Airs Sunday, January 25, on FOX
FOX has ordered a third season of the award-winning comedy BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, it was announced today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs, Fox Television Group.
Season-to-date, BROOKLYN NINE-NINE is averaging a 2.7/7 in Viewers 18-49, up +17% in the key demographic versus last season, and generating the largest year-to-year gains of any sophomore series. Additionally, the series’ Jan. 4 broadcast delivered a Live +3 rating of 3.6/9 in Adults 18-49, the show’s highest Live +3 rating of the season.
In “Defense Rests,” the next all-new episode of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, airing Sunday, Jan. 25 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, Sophia’s (guest star Eva Longoria) job gets in the way of her relationship with Jake (Andy Samberg), so Jake tries to smooth things over with her boss (guest star Chris Parnell, “Archer”). Meanwhile, Wuntch (guest star Kyra Sedgwick) needs Holt’s (Andre Braugher) help for a job recommendation.
Created and written by Dan Goor (“Parks and Recreation”) and Michael Schur (“Parks and Recreation,” “The Office”), BROOKLYN NINE-NINE stars Andy Samberg as a talented, but carefree, detective and Andre Braugher as his by-the-book precinct captain.

FOX has renewed hit drama series EMPIRE for a second season, it was announced today by Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs, Fox Television Group.
In the next all-new episode of EMPIRE, “The Devil Quotes Scripture,” airing Wednesday, Jan. 21 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, the Lyons head to Philadelphia for Bunkie’s funeral and get a taste of what their life could have been if Lucious (Terrence Howard) hadn’t made it big. Then, Lucious promotes Hakeem’s (Bryshere Gray) new relationship with hip-hop star Tianna (guest star Serayah), but tensions rise when another woman tries to catch Hakeem’s eye. Supermodel Naomi Campbell, Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. (“Jerry Maguire”) and music legend Gladys Knight guest-star.
Averaging a 5.3 rating in Nielsen’s Most Current measure, EMPIRE has emerged as the No. 1 new series of the season. Following its second episode, it is the only new broadcast drama this season to grow from week one to week two.
From Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels (“Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” “Precious”), Emmy Award winner Danny Strong (“Game Change,” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”) and Academy Award- and Emmy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer (“A Beautiful Mind,” “24”), comes EMPIRE, a drama about a family dynasty, set within a world of music, glamour, danger and power.

In the next all-new episode of GOTHAM, “What The Little Bird Told Him,” airing Monday, Jan. 19 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX, in an attempt to get his job back, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) seeks to capture Jack Gruber (guest star Christopher Heyerdahl), a deranged electrical genius who escapes Arkham Asylum. Meanwhile, Falcone (John Doman) struggles to hold onto his empire after Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) makes her next move.
Averaging a 4.2 rating in Adults 18-49 and 10.6 million viewers, GOTHAM is this season’s No. 1 broadcast drama overall among Men 18-49 and Men 18-34. ReplyDeleteIt has dropped a lot from Gotham. So I can see why they would want more data. As I wrote before, there has to be a contract issue or cost issue here in which even though the ratings are OK, they aren't high enough to justify continuing immediately.

Aww crap. I only care about Sleepy Hollow, if they get renewed I know TPTB will work on WHAT NOT TO DO for the third season. Also hoping they renew New Girl. Bones, idk, that's a question mark. They could get renewed, but I'd probably be okay with it if it ended. As for Gotham, It depends how the rest of th season goes, if iI decide to watch season 2.

ReplyDeleteIt has, and when you compare it to season 1 the ratings have dropped a lot. Hopefully these new changes they are making will help bring the ratings up.
ReplyDeleteSleepy is a self starter (it gets ghe same ratings even when it has repeats for a lead-in) so I don't think its rentention from Gotham should be an issue.

ReplyDeleteIsn't the whole point of Sleepy Hollow to be camp and serial in approach? Turning it into a straight procedural would ruin the tone completely. If that is FOX's only option to potentially renew, I think that it's best to move on and let the actors go to another project.

ReplyDeleteI don't get when people say that shows can only work as 13 episode series. The producers can just say "sure we will do 22 episode seasons" and then simply do two 11 episode season within one like OUAT is doing. That is by far the best model. You still get the show to syndication without escalating costs and you still get the benefits of no fillers/ keeping the tone. It's simply two seasons within one.

But I would feel better if the show started doing what I said, if only because it would get a higher episode count sooner rather than later, hence improving its renewal chances.

I think 22 episodes would be the death of Sleepy Hollow. They are already having trouble filling the episodes they've got. Hence we get the same conversation in every single episode.

ReplyDeleteThey need to just go for broke and make Katrina Team Evil. It would release Crane from the marriage, which drags him down, and maybe let him go a little darker. I say this not as a shipper, because I don't want him to hook up with Abbie any time soon. I just like his character more without the coupledom. And i'd prefer Katrina go evil. I love when a "good" character goes bad. (Angel on Buffy was a great example of this.)

ReplyDeleteCan't imagine SH going anywhere. Ratings are still up there for Fox (better on average than Bones) plus Fox OWNS it, right? It's the closest drama they've got to the magic syndication mark too. I just can't picture it not getting another season. But I absolutely would like it to rely less on the serialized stuff. I enjoyed a lot of the standalones last year. Those also tend to be lighter and offer a great excuse to watch the magic of crane and Abbie solving mysteries, which is the best part of the show for me.
ReplyDeleteThe 22 episode TV season works for procedurals and comedies but I dont think it works for serialized shows. The split season with two storylines was a clever idea but the writers still have to come up with two major story arcs per season times 7 seasons....eventually they are going to run out of ideas or just repeat themselves.

ReplyDeleteI like your reasoning behind why you'd want Katrina to go dark side, particularly the idea of Ichabod going a bit darker as a result, but at the same time, while you're not looking at it through shipping goggles, I'm afraid doing that would encourage the shippers out there even further. I kind of prefer the idea of either leaving her ambiguous, sort of a double agent of sorts, or working with the team, and becoming the big, powerful witch who can use her manipulative abilities for good.

I think that's a big issue, too, yes. I like that we live in a technological age where people who work on shows and their fans can connect and express appreciation and so forth, but yes, some fans get way too demanding and too many writers, on many shows, let them dictate how to run the series, forgetting it's not the fans writing the show, it's, well, the show writers.

ReplyDeleteThe thing with 13 vs 22 episodes has to do with time; how much time do you have to write the episodes? Having 13 per seasons give more time to plan out carefully how the arc is going to be developed, but having 22 means that you have less time and more work to do to prepare the arcs and the storylines. Having split seasons like OUAT is huge work, as you have to, essentially, plan two seasons in the span of one season; in essense, it is the best model, but it depends on the writers ability to handle that job, otherwise you may end up with weak scripts due to lack of time and the pressure of finishing them in time to make the episodes on schedule

Empire's ratings for both eps were just so HUGE though. For a network in such trouble, it makes sense to try and promote the success and try to get more people to check it out, now that they know it's sticking around. I wasn't going to watch at first, but I'm so glad I did!

ReplyDeleteThey are having problems because they are shitty writers/producers who chose to focus on the wrong things not because of the number of episodes. There were so many things they could've touched on such as the effects of purgatory on Abbie and Katrina, Irving and his family dealing with him being locked up first in jail and then the psych ward instead we got cfd, whiny villains, fan favorite charaters sidelined and misogynist writing.

ReplyDeleteIf the show wants to bring some of the humor back, I think there could be some great humor in seeing her mess with Abraham (I almost said "mess with Abraham's head" :p). I totally understand her sympathy for Henry, 'cause he's her son, and I think that conflict of feelings is an interesting thing to explore further, show the complexities of.
ReplyDeleteBut I'd get a real kick out of seeing Abraham thinking things are going right between him and Katrina only to find out she meant absolutely none of it. It might also make him that much more dangerous a foe, too.
And Abbie and Jenny's tough natures are much more apparent-Katrina could be the opposite of that. Use her quiet, unassuming nature to lure people in, make them think she's trustworthy and good...and then bam, she lets loose.

ReplyDelete100% agree. That is the #1 problem in a whole slew of problems. They forgot that their story is about a resurrected guy chasing a headless guy on zombie George Washington's orders. The only way something that absurd works is if everybody goes in acknowledging how absurd it is and having a whole lot of fun with it. The humor, the action, and the twists are what made this show. Now we have...um....er, yeah I've got nothing but soap opera relationships and emoangsting.

ReplyDeleteThe demon pregnancy is a trope for most genre TV and it's not like having Ichabod pregnant would be anything but comedy in what they were taking very seriously. Katrina being part of a love triangle is annoying but not because of misogyny. It's annoying because love triangles are so overdone. I think you can make a case for a lot against Sleepy Hollow this season, but not for misogyny. It has some of the most kick butt women of TV and while the writing has been crummy this season, it has been universally crummy. It isn't a gender thing. Abbie Mills is still a good, nuanced and proactive character. Jenny is even better. A misogynistic TV show would not have done such a great job with these characters.
ReplyDeleteI think people throw out the word misogyny to mean any time they don't like how a female character is being written and thus it decreases the power of the word. So far I have heard that word used against dozens of shows and most of them do not apply at all. I hate the way they are using Katrina in this show as well. She's a great character that seems to be saddled with lame writing, but looking at how all women are portrayed in this series shows that misogyny is not the problem. There is no hatred of women here and the fact that Abbie saves Ichabod as much as Ichabod saves her is actually one of the best things about the show right now. It's one of the few things in balance.
So because a show has two good female characters then it can't have a misogynist writing? That has to be the most basic thinking and justification and is up there with I can't be racist because I have a black friend. And demon pregnancy being a genre trope doesn't mean it can't be misogynistic also.
