Empire - Episode 1.04 - False Imposition (28-Jan-2015)
Lucious reveals to Anika he has ALS. With Empire's reputation being threatened by the Creedmore label, he makes poaching their star rapper Titan his priority, despite Titan sitting in jail on an attempted murder charge. Meanwhile, Jamal and Michael move into a tiny apartment to begin their life together outside of Lucious' payroll. Discovering that the media is lit up over the romance between Hakeem and Tiana, Lucious books them to perform a duet on the Teen Choice Awards nominations show at Leviticus, and orders them into the studio to record. Seeking to lure Titan over to Empire, Lucious and Anika meet with his managers and get caught in a drive-by shooting. Separately, Cookie appeals to Titan's strict Muslim family, who reveal the shooting Titan was involved in was in retaliation for the torching of a community center. The police question Lucious about his whereabouts the night of Bunkie's murder, and Andre lies to provide an alibi for him. When word gets out that Anika approached Titan in jail, Creedmore label head Billy Beretti confronts Lucious and tells him he'll never get the rapper; a flashback reveals Beretti ripping off Lucious of millions. Tension rises between Anika and Cookie about her intervention into the duet between Hakeem and Tiana, but Lucious backs his ex-wife up. When Hakeem is late for dinner, Tiana goes to his apartment to discover him with Camilla. They perform their duet anyway, to rapturous response. During the show, Lucious visits Titan in jail and convinces him to join Empire, telling him he’ll rebuild the community center that burned. Lucious later thanks Cookie for her help in signing the star, but when she seeks validation from Hakeem as well, he refuses to acknowledge her role in either his career or family.
Empire - Episode 1.05 - Dangerous Bonds (04-Feb-2015)
Lucious surprises Anika with a ring, though he warns her to be cautious announcing the news to their families. Meanwhile, Jamal spends what money he has for a day to record at an impoverished studio. Agent Carter orders Cookie to testify in a seventeen year old criminal case; when she does, she realizes she has been tricked into fingering a hugely powerful gangster, and her life is potentially in danger. Hakeem proposes an elaborate music video for his new song that Andre balks at, but Lucious green lights the project, emboldened by Hakeem’s confidence. When Andre asks Cookie if Tiana can appear in Hakeem’s video, Cookie agrees only if she can have a seat on the company board. He makes the deal, knowing that her felony conviction will eliminate her from the seat when the company goes public. Andre seeks to sabotage Hakeem’s video by posting a picture online of Tiana with her secret female lover, which throws the shoot into chaos and sends an enraged Hakeem storming off the set. Elsewhere, Jamal’s session is interrupted when a group of thugs rush the studio looking to rip him off, but Jamal stands up to them and the session is able to finish on a triumphant note. After Cookie finds a rose on her doorstep, she believes hit man Teddy McNally is coming for her and hires an old friend to kill him. Back at the Empire offices, Lucious asks Anika’s father, Dr. Calhoun, to sign a document saying he is in good health to secure Empire going public. Working together to put the music video shoot back on track, Cookie advises Tiana to seize the moment, while Lucious convinces Hakeem to resume work. Later, Jamal confronts Hakeem, thinking he sent the thugs to the studio, and the brothers come to blows. That evening, Cookie learns that the rose she found was left by Lucious - meaning the hit she called in was for naught.
