Criminal Minds Spinoff - Gary Sinise gets Lead Role

TVLine has learned that Gary Sinise, who for nine seasons led CBS’ CSI: NY as Detective Mac Taylor, has been cast on the planted Criminal Minds spinoff.

Specifically, Sinise will play Jack Garrett, a 20-year veteran of the FBI who heads up an elite BAU team that handles cases involving Americans abroad.

The potential spinoff, penned by Criminal Minds showrunner Erica Messer, will be filmed in February as an episode of the original series to air this spring.

    I like this idea a lot. I just hope they don't make every case happen in a tropical paradise. Abroad could be so many places. I like the thought of them in London one week, Prague the next. I wonder who will fill out the team. There are a lot of actors I'd like to see back on prime time.

    I'm usually totally for spin-offs, gives a well developed character a chance to tell his side of the story. However I`m never a fan of introducing characters specifically intended to be spun off (worked with Barry Allen though) and not a fan of spin-offs soley created to tell more and more procedural one-off episodes that have been done to death.


    CSI -> CSI:Miamai -> CSI:New York -> CSI: Cyber


    JAG -> NCIS -> NCIS: LA -> NCIS: NO


    Law&Order -> L&O: SVU -> L&O: Criminal Intent -> L&O: Trial by Jury -> L&O: LA -> L&O: UK -> Deadline -> Crime&Punishment -> Conviction

    "Okay, let's take that guy from that failed spin-off and put him in a retooling of a different failed spin-off."

    "Sir, that's a horrible idea."

    "Goddammit, Jefferson, just give me more crime procedural spin-offs with all the same actors. Circle jerk them as hard as you can!"

    I would hardly call NY "failed". It ran for 9 seasons.

    I agree with almost all of these. I like NCIS better than Jag though. Also S1/2 of the original CSI and never watched the others. All of the L&O's played out in the first season for me.
    I think Buffy/Angel and Arrow/Flash may be the only two I actually love.

    If this does come to fruition, I'll only watch because of Gary Sinise. Unless of course, they bring in more former CSI NY/Miami actors. xD Then I'll put it on the top of my list.

    Agreed. I always imagined the GS might 'transfer' from NY to Vegas to take over CSI. He would've worked well. Actually, I'm surprised that none of the other characters from any of the spin-offs didn't end up on mothership after cancelled. Several characters would have fit right in.

    Well, that too... As far as I'm aware, the ratings plummeted about halfway through the run -- seemingly making its longevity a ride on apparent prestige from the flagship CSI.

    9 Seasons. Ratings can't have plummeted that much. Even when it got moved to Friday, it did an above average job.

    That's exactly the problem with this casting. He's so tied to one character that it's going to be hard to see him play another character on another franchise. Criminal Minds might have done them a huge disservice.


    If he wanted to return to a CBS series, why not put the same character on CSI Cyber?

    I love GS and CM is one of my favorite shows so this is great news for me. Even better - Emily is in London so Paget can guest on two shows if this goes to series.

    Why not ? GS is a great actor and could make us forget Mac Taylor ; I'd like too watch a cross-over with the actual team cause I love Mantegna and Sinise :)

    See, I never saw "CSI: NY", so that's not an issue for me. Only thing I ever saw him in, actually, was 'Of Mice and Men', and that was years ago.
    I liked him in that film, though, so I'm curious to see how he'll do here.
