Chicago PD - We Don't Work Together Anymore - Review
17 Jan 2015
Chicago PD MR ReviewsIt’s Lindsay’s first day on the new job and she’s clearly nervous. “That’s what, your fourth mag?” asks Halstead at the shooting range. I just can’t get enough of these two! Stay tuned…
When Voight tells Olinsky that Erin’s spot in Intelligence has been offered to Burgess, he responds with, “Big shoes to fill.” Well, that’s an understatement. I’m still unhappy with Voight’s offer. My opinion of Burgess aside, I just don’t think she and Ruzek can handle a romantic relationship while working together. It’s a high-risk job, and for two cops who are still relatively new to the job, throwing in the whole being in love thing just won’t work.
Damien Mendoza is a big-deal drug smuggler in a major Chicago cartel. Lindsay’s first case on the task force is to take him down. Lindsay bonds quickly with Kylie, Damien’s girlfriend-turned-informant. Erin tends to get close to the victims and families involved in cases, and for all the toughness we see from her, it’s always nice to see her softer, affectionate side.
But then there’s the Marlboro Man (Lindsay’s boss), and he’s a Class A jerk. You can just tell, even before he does anything. Oh I’ll just come out and say it: I HATE the task force. And you know what? I’m not alone. It’s clearly not what Lindsay hoped it would be. And if the tension with her new boss is any indication, Lindsay won’t be there long.
Of course, the mission to grab Damien goes awry and a team that knows Chicago – who could have insight into where Damien could be hiding – is needed. I wonder who they should call?! I’ll give you one guess. Lindsay brings in the Intelligence unit and while I can’t entirely object to seeing this team in action (the chemistry just doesn’t get any better), it would have been nice to see Erin stand on her own for her first case.
Intelligence will focus on Damien’s three lieutenants and throughout the search, the Marlboro Man and Voight clash. It’s clear they don’t like each other, and I feel like they should put on armor, stick Lindsay in a dress and a fancy chair, and duel it out with swords or something.
Anyway, Antonio and Halstead go to investigate Cassie, one of the lieutenant’s girlfriends who has thirty-four cars registered in her name for the cartel. Thirty-four cars! Until Lindsay comes back (which, let’s be honest, is inevitable), I’d like to see Halstead partner up with Antonio. I forget that Antonio brought Halstead into Intelligence and that these two have a bit of a history. They work well together and I wouldn’t mind seeing it.
Olinsky and Ruzek target one of the lieutenants, Amelio, at a convenient store. I’ve said it before; I know it’s tough to give each character adequate time each week when the cast is this large. But, I cherish the Ruzek/Olinsky moments we do get, because they are wonderful. This is a great partnership!
Lindsay is back at the district for the interrogation and can’t help but visit her old desk. Of course, Halstead walks in and gets all flirty.
“We no longer work together. So a lot of the old rules and regulations, they don’t apply anymore.”
Lindsay nods, Halstead leans in, and…the Marlboro Man ruins it. Jerk.
Well of course, one thing leads to a few others and the team catches Mendoza and Kylie is found – she’s fine. The case really took its toll on Lindsay, and not because of the case itself, but because of the Marlboro Man. She doesn’t like him, it’s blatantly obvious. And while I don’t see her as a quitter, I also don’t see her working with the task force much longer.
Elsewhere…
It’s Burgess’ first day back on the job. Instead of getting back out on the streets with Roman, Platt designates Burgess to desk duty while – wait for it – Platt heads for the streets! I can’t wait to see this. Platt is a fantastic character and while I would love to argue that she’s underused, I think it’s her infrequent, hilarious one-liners that help give this show that stability at the secondary cast level. That being said, it’s great to see her step out from behind the desk. She kicks some serious butt.
Best comedic line of the night (from Platt, of course): “Uneasy lieth the head that weareth the crown upon the top of thine head.”
“What does that even mean?” asks Roman.
“She knows,” Platt quickly retorts, looking at Burgess.
In her sarcastic, wonderful way, Platt give Roman advice for moving forward, and basically tells him to let go of what happened with Burgess.
Well Burgess and Ruzek are out in the open, and it’s weird. I just don’t get it, guys. This isn’t even my dislike for her (which has lessened this season, by the way). It’s that there just isn’t any chemistry! But thankfully, we won’t have to see that in Intelligence because as I suspected, Burgess turns the offer down.
Look, I’ll give her this, she’s a great cop. But I don’t think she should be in Intelligence with Ruzek. Should she be there one day? Probably. But for now, I am happy that we will see her with Roman. They have a great partnership and there’s still a lot of story there to explore.
While she didn’t do much more than just stand in the background, it was great to see Nadia again too. I was skeptical of her character at first, but I hope they utilize her more and more and hey, how about series-regular status? Seeing her come back from an addiction and possibly becoming a cop will be a compelling story, I’m ready to see it!
And for the final scene of the night (yes, it gets in own section)…
Jay is sitting at home, watching Erin’s press conference (that she wasn’t a part of). There’s a knock at the door, and it’s Erin! Yes. Here we go. Jay gets that lovey look in his eyes and asks if she wants to talk about her day. She’s says no and…drumroll…they get right to it. The clothes come off and Linstead has never been stronger…or has it?
Don’t get me wrong, I love that it happened! But, I’m more interested in what it means moving forward. Lindsay has never really been in the right emotional state for a relationship, at least not a serious one. And while she is attracted to Halstead, I don’t know that she has feelings for him…yet. While she might have gone to his apartment that night to see what’s between them, I’m more convinced that she went because she knew exactly what Halstead wanted, when she just wanted to forget her horrible day.
On the flipside, I think it’s all about feelings for Jay. From the very beginning, he’s always shown more legitimate interest than she has. You can just tell by the way he looks at her, there’s some serious feelings there. So while I loved the scene, I think it meant a lot more to Jay than it did to Erin, which could cause problems moving forward, especially since Lindsay is not long for the task force world – she’ll be back in Intelligence soon enough.
What did you think of the episode? Are you excited to see more of Burgess and Roman? What happens now that Jay and Erin have crossed a line there’s no coming back from?

You hit the episode on the the head 100%!! You said EVERYTHING, literally everything I've been thinking of the episode. Especially Linstead. I felt as though Erin wanted a way to forget her day, so she showed up at Jay's apartment knowing exactly what she'd get. My biggest question for next week, and I'm hoping we get some answers, is where do they go now, and what happens when Lindsay comes back to Intelligence. As much as I loved that we finally got some action, I'm worried for both their emotional states.
ReplyDeleteI agree that I would love to see more Antonio/Halstead moments, and I do really like Ruzek and Olinsky. This show has done a great job of developing friendships and partnerships.
ReplyDeleteRoman grew on me in this episode, and while I do want Burgess in Intelligence, I'm glad she's giving Roman another chance. And we all know that Lindsay's going to take her spot back.
The only thing I disagree with is your opinion about Burgess and Ruzek. I see tons of chemistry there and so do a lot of fans. But I know everyone has their opinions!
@new york Dylan. I can see what your saying... Samuel`s article is really great... on saturday I got a new Buick from earning $8113 this-past/five weeks and just a little over $10 thousand lass month. no-doubt about it, this really is the nicest-job Ive ever had. Well thank you! I'm glad some people agree!
ReplyDeleteI definitely think the big question is where do they go from here. I'm more worried about Jay, because I feel like he will be more attached and she might not make it into anything, which could really affect their partnership. But, I'll take it! We all know this is going to be an ongoing relationship for the duration of the series, and this is just the beginning. We have a long road ahead.
We can definitely agree to disagree, that's what's great about talking through these shows! You know, I used to see chemistry between Ruzek and Burgess, before they were together. But now, it almost doesn't make sense. Maybe it would if we saw them together more.
ReplyDeleteI don't want Burgess in Intelligence...yet. They set it up to be this prestigious unit that everyone wanted to be in, but made it seem difficult to get in to. They've got to keep that prestige about it. Burgess needs to pay her dues. Atwater shouldn't be in the unit at all.
I do think it was weird that he hardly ever saw Burgess and Ruzek together at the beginning of the season, and now it's a big thing again. I'm happy about though.
ReplyDeleteWe're completely in agreement about Atwater. Does he actually do anything?
Yeah, I'm definitely more worried about Jay as well. Erin has that loyalty to Voight, and I can see her putting the walls back up with Jay to keep that loyalty. That said, there was a vulnerability to Erin when she was at Jay's apartment, so hopefully that's also taken into consideration. She can be totally stripped back and naked (no puns) with him and hopefully that means something to where they go from here as well.
ReplyDeleteAnd I can't help but thinking that Erin finally let Jay drive ;)
I agree, your review nailed it again! What happens next with Lindstead is the important question. Because of her past Lindsay has trouble expressing her feelings and trusting anybody, so there is hope, that she actually feels the same as Jay imo. I think it is too early to tell, if she really feels less than Jay. My interpretation is that she went to the person the trusts most after Voight and because she is not the person to talk about her feelings, she went straight for Jay's offer. If she will ever allow herself admitting her feelings to Jay, is a different question. Erin is so afraid to get hurt again because of her past, that I think she will rather joke about it than being open about it. This is were the writing comes in, and I hope they do it right.
ReplyDeleteErin and Voights relationship is one example, that she is not putting her affection on her sleeve, even tough she cares deeply for him. And being abandoned and disappointed by her mother, will not ever turn her in a affectionness person like Ruzek. So I hope she does't return to Intelligence right away, which would give her an excuse to actually get into a real relationship with Jay. I seriously hope it is not just a one night stand.
Loved Platt and Roman, last episode Voight looked out for him and this time Platt. Roman is climbing the ladder to one of my favorite people. Good choice of Burgess, she is more mature than Ruzek will ever be.
Agreed!!
ReplyDeleteI think because Jay and Erin are "that relationship" of the show (because let's get real, it's not Ruzek and Burgess), it's not going to be a smooth, easy relationship. We'll definitely have our share of ups and downs.
Right? I think I could be more on board with Ruzek and Burgess if we ever actually saw them together. I was pulling for them last season, because the chemistry was obvious. But now, I just don't see it.
ReplyDeleteAtwater does nothing! How did he even get into Intelligence?
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI agree, I think she trusts Jay more than anyone except Voight. And, I would argue that the trust she has in Halstead is growing - not that hers in Voight is declining, but it seems she may be "growing up" for lack of a better term.
I hope they do it right too! I definitely think she has some feelings for Jay, it's her own self who is holding back. But, I definitely think Jay's feelings are further along.
I'm so happy you love Roman too! He's been an excellent addition to the cast this year, he's really climbing up my list of favorites too. I say give Roman more screen time and dump Atwater.
I think you are right. There is definitely more than just one night for these two since they are so complex characters. And yes I think that Jay is the person she trusts the most after Voigh but Erin is not a simple character with her past and all. But she is not an open person about her feelings so I can hardly wait to see what the writers have prepared for us. I remember that Voigh said once in the early episodes that he is not protective about Erin but he is worried about Halstead - when there was a hint about their relationship. Anyway things are looking great with the two of them at least now since I really love these characters.
ReplyDeleteI am with you all the way, I think Voight meant with that comment that Erin was never in any relationship because she always dumped them before they could get too close to her. She is avoiding getting hurt at all costs, even if that means she pushes people away who are worth keeping except for Voight. I certainly hope she gives Jay a real chance, and doesn't take the easy way out and follows Voights rule once she is back in Intelligence.
ReplyDeleteI just rewatched Season 1, and I miss Sheldon! The team could use a tech guy, the writing regarding Atwater is just weak.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Jay seems to be more into her, but we don't know for sure ..maybe he is more of a womanizer than we have actually seen (which I hope is not the case..). And Erin is justified to hold back, but I also think it is her past which holds her character back the most to get close to anybody except Voight. I hope the writers don't let her screw it up right away...
Antonio's partner died, and the IA chick (sorry forgot her name) came in. And when Voight dumped her, Atwater was filling the spot because Burgess was in a relationship with Ruzek.
ReplyDeleteIt's always been Linstead, right from the first episode, - Burzek is just a ring in, hah (much preferred them apart then together).
ReplyDeleteI was just re watching some episodes, and I think Erin is becoming more aware of her feelings to Jay, and Jay's feeling to her. It'll be interesting to see them on this coming week's episode. Chicago PD twitter page tweeted that we're in for more Linstead next week, so fingers crossed!
Platt is like the mother figure and comic relief on the show. In sometimes a very dark episodes.
ReplyDeleteHa! I forget her name too, but I liked her. She's much better than Atwater.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he's a womanizer. Everything we know of him says he's one of the best guys there is. It's definitely Erin's past that holds her back.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I hope the writers handle this with extra care.
You know, I really miss Shay. But I will say, there isn't another death that could happen on that show that could change it in the way it did, so I don't hate the writers for it. It was bold, and it worked.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to see this unfold! I usually hate it too, but in this case, I think this is just a very early chapter in the will they/won't they saga.
Agreed. And I love it.
ReplyDeleteAs always your review is right on the money! I have to admit, I'm a bit worried for Linstead after your reading your review. Wasn't Erin & Severide working towards a serious relationship until Shay died? I recall her telling Jay they were taking things slow. I took them as being sort of serious. Maybe that was just me. I would love to hear everyone else thoughts on that. I'm hoping we get good and some of the bad with them building their relationship but none of the break up dramatics going forward. It will be interesting to see how they handle their relationship once Erin returns to intelligence which she will within the next few episodes.
ReplyDeleteTask force, I don't feel it's for Erin. Everything that Erin is about is not what the task force is about. Lindsay is not about the press conference and lying to informants. Kylie put her life and child out there on the line and for the FEDS to not award her the informant money is just plain wrong. Lang is a prick and I see no chemistry between him and Erin as partners or co-workers. Did anyone notice how he looked Halstead up & down when he interrupted them at CPD? Erin wanting to reach out to Voight was a touching scene to me. Voight is starting to show more of a softer side. That proud father side and I'm liking it....
Enjoyed seeing Antonio and Halstead working together and Alvin & Ruzek. I want to see more of Antonio and Halstead bonding. I know Antonio is going through somethings right now that Jay wouldn't understand but I like their chemistry and bond.
Hopefully the task force thing is ending soon. IDK maybe another episode with them and they not being jerks would get me to like the task force. I rather see the Chicago Med team than the task force. I want to like Lang but IDK right now.
I'm hoping it's not a one night stand between them as well. And not a back and forth between them. I think pulling this move this early on, the writers will make it more than a one nighter. Even if it's a secret relationship which Ruzek/Burgess suppose to have been. Ruzek & Burgess were rookies and not detectives so everyone pretty much knew of their relationship. Allow Lindsay and Halstead to show these detectives how it is to date in secret. (or not... doesn't matter)
