Black Sails - IX - Advance Preview

Premiering January 24th at 9pm; Black Sails returns for its second season. The show starts exactly at the same point where the show finished at in the season finale with Flint and Silver overlooking the Urca smashed up and trashed on the shore after being taken out by a storm.

Before the show resumed at the point where it finished last season, there was a quick introduction to a new character known as Captain Lowe. If you thought Vane was a nasty piece of work wait until you see this one in action. He cares little for anyone or anything, and will take no prisoners...literally.

Flint's power struggle continues over to this season with all of his crew wanting his head. He knows he needs to earn back there trust somehow; luckily Dufrene has something in mind. He offers Flint a pardon for his crimes if he comes up with a plan to retrieve the gold from the Urca, which was their original objective. The problem though is that it's heavily guarded by men, and a warship just offshore, and there just aren’t enough of them to go in all guns blazing. Flint wonders if it’s worth the risk so makes a decision that puts his life in jeopardy. During the episode you will see Flint question everything he has done, and there are some interesting flashbacks which are shown to when Flint was in London, before he became a pirate.

Elsewhere, you will see what life is like for Jack after he has been disowned by his captain, and cast out by just about everyone. Nobody wants anything to do with him which is not something he can take sitting down. His former captain Vane on the other hand is continuing to enjoy his recent gain off power in Nassau, much to Eleanor’s continued displeasure. As for Eleanor she is continuing to try to keep the peace in Nassau by trying her utmost best to continue trade, but certain problems arise during the episode that could potentially destroy everything she has worked so hard to keep.

The episode introduced us to a few new storylines, but ultimately it continued on with the already existing ones. The acting on the show is as good as ever, and the overall quality that season one had has carried over into this one. The episode also wasn't light on action/drama, there was a lot of it to accompany the storytelling. Overall it was a thrilling season première, that shows again why this show is one of the best on cable television.

That's all I'm going to give you as I don't watch to spoil anything, but below are a few dialogue teasers for you all!

"If your friends aren't capable of protecting themselves, I argue that they aren't worth protecting"

"Civilization needs it's monsters"

"Jesus Christ, what's become of my name"

"Might you consider for a fucking moment, that your distrust in me is unwarrented"

"Between you and I, which of us should bare the cost of that"

As always, thank you for reading! You can catch "IX" this Saturday 9pm on Starz.
