AKA Jessica Jones - David Tennant Cast

A Time Lord is coming to the Marvel universe. The studio has cast David Tennant as the major villain in its upcoming Netflix series A.K.A. Jessica Jones. The Doctor Who and Gracepoint star will play Zebediah Killgrave (aka The Purple Man).

The official series description: “After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23) is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City. An enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past, Kilgrave’s reappearance will send shockwaves through the former super hero’s world.”

In the comics, Kilgrave can produce pheromones which give him the power to control people’s minds as long as he’s physically nearby. He also can recover from severe injuries very quickly and is, quite literally, purple. But it’s not clear yet how closely Marvel’s series will stick to the comic version of the character. “I’m so honored and excited by the prospect of David inhabiting this multifaceted character,” said Melissa Rosenberg. “He can deliver the most heart-wrenching moment to the driest of lines, and all points in between. He’ll make Kilgrave a truly original villain.”

  1. Oh shit, the villain that kidnapped Jessica and psychologically tortured her for eight months and was the reason behind making her retire from being a superhero the first time. This is gonna hurt but yay Tennant! Not a bad casting choice at all.

  5. Is it wrong that my initial reaction was 'Simmons would be happy' and 'now I really want a Simmons cameo on the show'?

  6. Wanted him at DC... Not a fan of Marvel... I want my Tennant! :(

  7. Hopefully he won't actually be purple. xDD But I'm happy to see David Tennant in Marvel.

  8. Damn, I can't stand him.

  9. Eeek David is going to be freaky as Purple Man, one of the most disturbing Marvel villains..

  10. Ugh, Tennant's been pretty bad in everything that I've seen him in. This casting kills a great deal of my excitement for the show.

He also sounds like an extremely overpowered villain.

  11. They're accumulating a good cast for this show. I hope they have the writing and the production to match it.

  12. Please don't make him purple.

  13. I doubt they will. Wouldn't want to create any confusion with Thanos being purple. I think what they'll do is dress him in shades of purple as a nod to the original comic character.

  14. Tumblr crowd is going to implode if Marvel/Netflix doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of the character.

  15. Purple Man is SUCH a twisted character that made for a disturbing story line, so this should be very interesting. Tennant is a great choice.

  16. Christopher Eccleston already beat him to it. He was Malekith in Thor: The Dark World.

  17. I was pretty much on the fence about this show but was willing to watch because I loved Rysten Ritter in Don't Trust the B-. But now with David Tennant added, Im definitely gonna check it out.

  20. It will be quite weird for me to see David Tennant (an actor I really like) portray such a terrible and disturbing character. I am sure he'll do a fine job though!

  21. Hah probably, I hope they don't shy away, its part of what makes him such a chilling villain.

  22. I remember 'Mr Purple' having a fun arc in the Daredevil comics a few yrs ago. Imagine if they have a crossover with Daredevil!

  23. In the comics he definitely was all purple. Even his scenes were tinged with purple.

  24. Happy about the Doctor arriving on the MCU (Even though Eccleston has already been there), since Simmons is a certified Doctor Who fan in canon, I believe is what they meant.

  25. He debuted in a Daredevil comic, being one of his very first villains, so a confrontation with DD would be a nice nod.

  26. If I wasn't looking forward to the show (and I was) this news would definitely have me changing my tune.
