"I think that things will probably become clear by the end of this season, I would certainly hope. We've followed this guy for 10 episodes now. The writers are really good at introducing something that makes you retrospectively look at the rest of the actions and all of the sudden you have an ah-ha moment," he tells Zap2it at 2015 winter TV press tour. "I hope that there's going to be some kind of twist where everything makes sense and comes into focus."
That step seems to revolve around Ming-Na Wen's second "SHIELD" character, Agent 33. She and Ward have a clear connection and end the fall finale by heading off together and starting what Dalton calls "another chapter for Ward's journey."
Wen finds Agent 33 to be an exciting challenge. "I mean, how do you play a character that is brainwashed and lost and don't know really what direction to go in? She's so completely the antithesis of May, who knows so much and has all these secrets and has a real definite opinion and idea of what's right and wrong," she tells Zap2it. "To play a character like [Agent 33] is just so much fun where she's emotional and raw; she's like a child -- and a nasty scar on her face."

I still think Ward and Coulson are working together to take down Hydra and that will be revealed eventually, tbh.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm looking forward to Ward and Kara working together, becoming friends, and helping each other heal from the abuse they suffered. It should be an emotional storyline.
Meh, I'm not in to Ward being redeemed, refolded back into the team, etc.
ReplyDeleteIt'll take a while because redemption isn't supposed to be easy. It's a long, hard road and I'm going to need him to apologize to the team (and the Koenigs soon).
ReplyDeleteAnd hopefully he will realize soon - especially now that he's with Kara - that Garrett kidnapped and abused him.
Given the body count of people that Ward has left along with the conversation he and Coulson had in the episode where he was handed over to his brother I think that's clutching at straws to be honest.
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't care about the Hydra agents he killed and since it happened off screen and we saw no bodies, I'm not entirely convinced he did murder his family.
ReplyDeleteSkyeward shippers seem to be one of the most masochistic shippers out there. I know what I'm talking about. ;) I love that they don't redeem him to be a good guy "again" (so far). I love his shades of grey. He's trilling. And I think the pairing of him and "CloneMay" will be compelling.
ReplyDeleteI really do not believe in that theory. It seems so far-fetched.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your optimism! I wish you could pass it on to me ;-)
ReplyDelete*And hopefully he will realize soon - especially now that he's with Kara - that Garrett kidnapped and abused him.*
ReplyDeleteHopefully he'll realice Garrett abused him, but he didn't kidnap him. Yes he was a kid trapped in an imposible situation and when Garrett offered him a way out how could he not accept it, but it was his choice, and I'm glad that Ward himself said so, because he could've taken the easy way out and tell Skye he was brainwashed, but he was honest, and that is step in the right direction.
Good interview but some of it was a little on the nose like Ward and Agent 33 hooking up. No need to be coy about it. Its OBVIOUSLY going to happen. No big surprise there.
ReplyDeleteAs for Ward's overall arc and outcome I speculate, and this is only speculation based on observations and my understanding of the Marvel Universe of both comics and cinema, the following:
* Ward is not working with Coulson or anybody else to secretly take down Hydra. He is very much in it for himself. He's a damaged man who is trying to rebuild himself. Despite doing some horrible things to achieve his ends, his moral compass does overall point to Good instead of Evil. But that's if you accept that 55 is closer to 100 than 0.
* Despite shooting him in the mid season finale it is plain as day that Skye/Daisy is bat shit crazy, head over heels, bonkers, can't sleep at night, sweaty palms, short breath, out of her mind in love with Ward. And I've said before she absolutely, positively hates, loathes and utterly detests herself for it.
* In order to convince herself and others that she has no feelings for Ward other than revulsion, Skye will utilize her powers to put her on a more even footing with Ward. The inevitable throw down between these two will be epic of which I believe there will be many. They'll chase each other. And will likely end with them falling into each others arms. Think of Brad and Angelina in Mr & Mrs. Smith when they fought in the house and ended having sex.
* The events of Avengers Age of Ultron we know will set in motion the events of Captain America Civil War coming out in May 2016 which will feature heavily the Superhuman Registration Act. Lines will be drawn between those who support and oppose it. Skye/Daisy will be impacted because of her powers and will be forced to go against SHIELD who will officially need to support it. Ward will also oppose the registration act and Skye and Ward will find themselves working together again.
Throughout all of this Ward will remain an independent working on his own to do the right thing. He will however always remain a person of suspicion in the eyes of his former teammates.
Ward was sixteen years old. He may have agreed to go but he was a minor and could not legally consent, thus it is kidnapping.
ReplyDeleteAnd abuse is brainwashing, just a real world version of it and not the MCU version.
Same, he's better off as a villain. Whatever happened with him in his childhood and with Garrett, he killed people, and he doesn't seem to have any remorse for that. People say that he didn't kill FitzSimmons but he basically left for them to die at the bottom of the ocean and that's enough reason for me to hate him.
ReplyDeleteTruth is, he could've said no and face the consecuences. I said impossible situation, because very few people would choose to stay be tried as an adult over a new life.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, abuse is brainwashing and we as the audience know that, but Skye no longer believes he was abused, so to lie to her and tell her he was would've solved most of his problems. Instead, he didn't. He could've chosen to "scape" like he did with Garret, but he chose to face the music. That, IMO, is character development.
Although, I'll be honest, I wsa right by Skye hoping he was literally braiwashed.
Yup, it is an impossible situation and that's exactly what Garrett wanted. Ugh, I'm so glad he's dead.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping the team does learn soon about Garrett's abuse because it's relevant and extremely important. It doesn't excuse his actions, of course, but it explains a lot.
And he is taking responsibility for his actions so I'm happy for him! That's progress.
Agent Hand? Do you really think Coulson would sanction that? Or sanction ward letting the fridge prisoners out and letting hydra have all those insanely deadly weapons to kill countless innocents with?
ReplyDeleteMy opinion of the show will drop drastically if that theory is true.
ReplyDeleteExactly! I know it can be frustrating, but the fact that he's chosen to take responsability is a huge step for someone that would normaly hide under a different identity. I'm really excited to see how he continues to grow, although I hope he gives up on the notion that he and Skye can be monsters together and just focus on bringing down HYDRA, tbh that's a bit, well crazy, and stalkerish and... not right.
ReplyDeleteNo, this plan didn't form until after he was already jailed and his brother showed up.
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for some non Ward news, damn it show gimme me the goods.
ReplyDeleteUgh, I'm still pissed Raina put that "monsters together" thought in his head (and encouraged Ward to stay with his abuser when he began having doubts about Garrett. Love her but uncalled for).
ReplyDeleteThirty straight years of abuse have left him mentally ill and Ward definitely needs therapy because his love for Skye isn't healthy right now. Maybe the shooting (which I believe Skye did to stop him from following her and dying like Trip did) will wake him up a little.
Right now, Ward and the whole team are toxic for each other (and all need therapy) so it's best they have this time apart. Ward can hopefully figure himself out and start to heal with Kara.
Exactly, I couldn't care less about Ward right now.
ReplyDeleteDoubt Coulson would that after what he did to Hand, Koenig and Fitz.
ReplyDeleteI hope Ward and Agent 33 don't hook up. Too gross given the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteIndeed there are so many other characters and plots I'm interested in, Skye as superhero, Fitz ongoing recovery, whatever Mack and Bobbi are hiding, the fall out of Trip dying, the impact of the Inhumans on the MCU, May's backstory. Ward just doesn't interest me.
ReplyDeleteThe problema with what Raina said to him was that it offered him an easy way out, without him having to work on his issues. If he was a monster and so was Skye, then she would have to come to understand him. Easy answer so hi chose to grab onto it.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I think that seeing himself IN Kara, will help him realize what's wrong with him and his way of seeing the world. And helping her, will heal him too.
Two severely damaged people, that identify with one another, in close quarters... I can definitely see it happening.
ReplyDeleteAnd Garrett didn't help matters much because I'm pretty sure he sent Ward over the edge when he ordered him to kill FitzSimmons. Being forced to hurt people he loved again is what caused him to finally snap.
ReplyDeleteChloe and Clark did some interviews yesterday that should be out soon.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I hope Ming and Brett were just trolling there because no. She has no agency and is still brainwashed.
ReplyDeleteYes, having to choose between 3 people he loved, with no good option, would definiely do the trick...
ReplyDeletePersonally I think that Ward should not have a relationship with Agent 33. The show has heavily shown that Ward is bonkers for Skye so him sleeping with Agent 33 would just go against everything they have shown about his feelings for Skye!
ReplyDeleteI REALLY hope they don't go there, but love is not sex, so with him knowing that he may love Skye but he can't have her, sleeping with somebody else to release tenssion, or whatever, is not that far fetched. Although I really wish they'd stir clear of all and any "relationship" of that sort.
ReplyDeleteHis obsession with Skye is really creepy.
ReplyDeleteI hope so too. I could see it happening, unfortunately. A friendship between them could be interesting though.
ReplyDeleteAs a SkyeWard shipper, I have to say that I agree, not because of his feelings for her, but because he continues to fixate on them being monsters together. Once he realizes that's not going to happen and get's over it, it will be... less creepy. I still ship them though, lol.
ReplyDeleteI feel just about the same way. Ward was so boring when he was "good". Once he started killing everyone, I oddly enough started to like him more. But, I only started to actually hate Ward once I saw the effects it had on Fitz. Fitz became cognitively impaired, and still is to a degree, I just thought it was cruel...but a very interesting storyline for Fitz. So when Skye shot him 3 times, I felt a great amount of joy. For me, Ward either stays gray and goes his own way...or he somehow ingratiates himself with Skye and still remains a gray character (not sure how that would be possible, since 3 shots to the chest seems like a definite 'no' to me). Otherwise, I wouldn't want to have another type of Ward and I'd be happier seeing him die in a very creative way (just my opinion). Sure, Ward was abused in the past, but that was the past. He could have made something of himself after it...but he didn't. Believing he is still working for Coulson after everything he did...that sounds crazy to me.
ReplyDeleteFrom that point of view i totally agree, but to me it would still just be wrong!
ReplyDeleteThere is different degrees of creepy and I have to admit that he has crossed a line but not sofar that he cannot come back from it!
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you said, and I would be on board for him dying in a creative way. Possibly sacrificing himself or something. I think that would please everyone.
ReplyDeleteOf course they're going to hook up. Its inevitable. It will factor into Ward's long journey and introspection. They will be both go into it with their eyes open but also knowing its broken. Agent 33 and Ward will enter a codependent relationship but they will each ultimately know its not real and doomed to fail.
ReplyDeleteOh yea, I'm really interested about what Bobbi is hiding. Plus make her a regular already, please.
ReplyDeleteMy theory is she is reporting back to Hill or Fury but I'm not sure. Yeah I hope if/when AOS S3 her and Mack are upped to regulars..
ReplyDeleteI don't have any theories about what Ward is playing at or where his character will go from here. All I know is that my opinion of Ward as a character remains unchanged:
ReplyDeleteWard is much much more interesting now than he was in season one. Keep up the good work, SHIELD.
Apparently Lee thinks highly of the show despite it's low ratings and i believe S3 is a go lol
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see her and Ward together. Minga seems to be having fun with this role
ReplyDeleteIkr. I honestly think Bobbi had a child with the guy and never told him. But I might've thought that just because that night I found out that Oliver Queen had a child
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say that Ward is between good and evil so much as batsh*t crazy and broken and extremely talented and clever, which makes him somewhat unpredictable. I love that about villain Ward, and I don't want it to change. But as far as his redemption is concerned, unless something drastic happens in the near future, I don't feel it. And it comes down to a simple reason - beyond the whole traitor/murderer thing, but this is TV, so it wouldn't be the first time that a character got past that - he's trying to make things up with Skye and Coulson, aka the girl he has a crush on and his new father figure. He can barely face the people he's really hurt, most namely Fitz. What's he doing to make Fitz's life better, exactly? The one person who defended him no matter what that he gave the gift of brain damage. Fitz is getting to meet long lost parents or getting bad guys as presents. And until Ward focuses on the real damage he's done, from using May to the damage he did to Fitz and Simmons to, you know, all those people he killed, he's not actually looking to be a better person. He's looking for forgiveness from the people he wants to like him. That's not the same.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank goodness, because while I'd watch a redemption arc if they did it well enough and took the time to really put Ward through the wringer, I don't really want to. I love Ward as he is - completely and wonderfully insane and unpredictable. It's fun to watch, it adds a great third dynamic to the SHIELD/HYDRA conflict, and it looks Dalton is having a blast playing him these days.
yeah you could it in her eyes when she asked Ward if he was brainwashed
ReplyDeletedid it surprise you when he said it
ReplyDeletethe Faustus is reversible so why is Kara no reversing like Gill did?
ReplyDeletehow do you mean, as a civilian ally?
ReplyDeleteyou think it's plot and not Bobbi having had Hunter's child?
ReplyDeleteLOL when i saw Chloe and Clark i thought of Smallville
ReplyDeleteyou mean as an anti-hero?
ReplyDeleteHE IS NOT A VILLAIN! , he's not out to kill them is he? so how in the world is he a villain
ReplyDeleteI mean as a character in general. He's complicated, damaged, and somewhat unpredictable. I'm so glad his entire season-one personality was just a ruse.
ReplyDeleteWARD HAS TO BE REDEEMED!!!!!!!! and he and Skye WILL get together not Kara
ReplyDeleteWell he's just out to kill pretty much everybody else, he is the consummate definition of an anti-hero with some villain tendencies, i hope he is not redeemed, as he is more interesting this way
ReplyDeleteI miss Bill Paxton. I really do.
ReplyDeleteStill doesn't mean it's not a possibility.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to try to kill people to be a villain.
ReplyDeletePlease calm down with the cap lock yelling. I feel like you do it every time I say something you disagree with, and I don't enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteAnd Ward was a part of Hydra, killed lots of people, left Fitz and Simmons at the bottom of the ocean, escaped custody - possibly killing a bunch of policeman on the way out, although I will admit they weren't clear on that; he definitely shot someone anyway - and then lead HYDRA to SHIELD, took the person they wanted (Raina), and while he may have told them not to kill everyone by blowing up the plane, being HYDRA, they tried to anyway. They're rotten little scamps like that. Which he knows, seeing as he worked for them, and he gave them the bus's location anyway.
Ward may not explicitly being playing against SHIELD anymore, but he hasn't really been all that helpful. He made a promise to help Skye meet her dad, but if you notice, she didn't really ask for his help. And in his single-minded desire to fulfill that promise, he put SHIELD and who knows how many other people at risk by helping HYDRA with their plans, and by putting Raina and Skye in HYDRA's hands, the latter against her will, he helped set off the chain of events that led to Tripp's death. I will grant that he's not a villain in the same sense as HYDRA, in that he hasn't been actively trying to hurt SHIELD or innocent people lately, but he seems to hurt them anyway, and it's by doing things that can hardly be labeled as "good." He almost got Skye killed by taking her - if SHIELD hadn't come when they did, Whitehall would have started experimenting, and that never ends well. And again, Tripp ended up dying anyway, so while Ward might not be TRYING to kill SHIELD agents, he might as well be at this point.
Plus, post-Skye shooting him, we'll see how pro-SHIELD he is. I'm guessing he won't be as fond. It should be interesting.
Yeah, I don't see AOS going there with secret babies. Bobbi and Mack seemed to be talking about something professional rather than personal.
ReplyDeleteI don't see that at all with Bobbi, its much more likely to be some secret spy thing.
ReplyDeleteWell I think S3 is likely but not because of Paul Lee's enthusiasm because he 'loves' everything and still cancels shows!
ReplyDeleteWhilst that May be true many characters have transitioned from being bad or evil to good well , Xena primary example when she was evil she killed a lot of people but did not kill women and children but still people.
ReplyDeleteAnyone can change at this point , but trust is something Ward will have to probably spend his entire life gaining , l could see Fitz forgiving him because hes was more emotionally connected to Ward but Gemma not , or at least both guys never trusting him but accepting working with him.
Ward and Fitz's scene was heart breaking , Ward kind of left his surrogate little brother and sister to die , he could not kill them him self and chose the easy way out.
Ward left them to die which is pretty bad and it will be really tough for the show to redeem him , Skye who was his love interest hated his guts enough to shoot him.
Ward will change being shot by the girl he cares about changed that , it his wake up call.If the writers want to redeem him thats what they will do.
Black widows past if they go there is pretty bad.
According to the other article he calls AOS great and powerful for the network and likes it despite the poor ratings.
ReplyDeletelittle brother ans sister aw but are they really younger than Ward how old are they anyway LOL
ReplyDeleteheh
ReplyDeletewell not the having feelings for the team that wasn't a ruse
ReplyDelete
